The Pastor’s Letter Pastor Greg Magruder

P A G E 2

Parkview Baptist Church is enjoying its 50 year celebration. We have had a great Homecoming reunion in April and went through 50 Days of Jubilee in May. We hired Shane Johnson who started in June and we ended that month with one of the best Vacation Bible Schools we have had in years. The men of the church have started meeting the fourth Sunday of each month for a fellowship breakfast and a Search Team has been mobilized to look for a new Minister of Music. We have had many new people visit and stay in the last several weeks. There is a spirit of renewal and awakening among us. We are excited about what God is going to do in the days ahead. Hiring Shane Johnson as our Minister of Children, Youth and Families was a strategic move to prepare our church for growth. Our VBS outreach resulted in nine decisions for Christ. We are following up on each of these decisions so that we are certain that the children understood the commitment they made. But we are also pleased with the number of prospects and new families that VBS produced. These new families will be the nucleus of the children’s ministry in the future. Some of these families are now attending our church. Others have indicated a desire to attend our church once the children’s programs are in place. Shane and I have been brainstorming about the best way to reach these children and families and the schedule that would help us to best use our resources and personnel. If we are to be strategic in our outreach and programming, then we will have to make some changes in our schedules. At the end of August we will shift our discipleship and children’s programs to Wednesday nights. We plan to restore the Wednesday Night Family Supper. Children and youth programs will be offered following the meal. Wednesday nights will be devoted to Discipleship Training, Prayer and Choir for adults. The whole family will be able to be fed a good meal and fed spiritually on Wednesday nights. Shane and I shared this information at the quarterly business meeting. The new schedule is provided in this newsletter. These changes will require an adjustment on the part of every church member. Parents of children will need to adjust their Wednesday schedules to the new church schedule. Wednesday nights will be the primary discipleship training for your child. Wednesday nights will be where your child learns about missions, memorizes Scripture and works on Bible projects.

7:00 PM Tuesday Evenings

August 4 GROW “G” & “R” 18 GROW “O” & “W”

Wednesday nights will be where all adults will be able to choose discipleship classes that will help them grow in their Christian walk. It also is the day where volunteers can use their spiritual gifts to train and teach children, youth and adults. We are looking for workers and leaders to step up and serve. We aim to make Wednesday the spiritual boost day rather than midweek slump day. What about Sunday? Sunday will continue to be the day of spiritual rest and worship. We will continue to have Bible Study for all ages and Morning Worship. The children will continue to have Children’s Worship for kids ages 5 to 4th grade. Sunday evening, however, will change from a discipleship night to a night with no regularly scheduled meetings. Right now very few people attend Sunday evening services. Few people attend our discipleship classes and there are no programs for children and youth. People have voted with their feet already. Sundays are for rest and most people stay home. Sunday night will be used for CLASS 101, etc. and for other teacher training classes or committee meetings. It will be used for special events like concerts and for our quarterly business session. We will be able to use Sunday nights for planning and training and committees without having to pull people away from their homes on another week night. I personally see this change as an opportunity to have more time to train the newcomers and workers in our church. I may even be able to have time to visit my neighbors or lead a neighborhood Bible Study. When King David called his soldiers to battle, the sons of Issachar responded. The commentary on this tribal group speaks volumes: “And the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their kinsmen were at their command” (1 Chronicles 12:32). We are at a point in our church ministry where we need to understand the times and respond to the needs of our community. The focus of discipleship ministry on Wednesday nights rather than Sundays fits the family patterns of our church family and the trends of the culture. Let’s embrace the changes around us and respond to the people where they are. Let’s commit ourselves to discipleship on Wednesday and worship and rest on Sunday.
