CLASSICIMPRESSIONISM
— S A L L Y W I L S O N
& J O H N K E L S E Y —
The Classic Movement saw painters experimenting with brush strokes to achieve new expressions of “realism.” Sally and John also experimented when creating their glass tile installation. “The mosaic was designed on a computer and assembled robotically,” John explains while detailing their desire to infuse a traditional space with contemporary technique.
This serene bathroom features the beautiful Lowell Freestanding Soaking Tub, an oval homage to the room’s shape. Hidden doors conceal an edgy water closet where padded sculptural wall tiles echo the mosaic. A waterfall-like showering experience culminates in a floor tile design that flows forward to form an undulating pond around the tub. Sally sums it up: “To be here, you’re really living inside art.”
Although impressionism seemsvery traditional today, at its time
it was avant-garde.

The Golden Era Movement ushered in abstract art as a new way to explore reality.
“It was the contemporary art of its time,” explains Alan. Here, he lays a foundation of restful tones that makes a bold architectural statement without compromising serenity. The Fitzgerald Freestanding Soaking Tub is artfully centered, then edged in diaphanous drapery, to create yet another quiet homage to geometry.
Even Alan’s mix of product selections— from the Randall Faucet Collection to the Pop Rectangle Vessel Lavatory—echo how past and present can work together to create novel artistic expressions. In the end, this orchestrated dance of soft and bold, old and new, offers cool respite before a morning at the café, an afternoon at the museum or an evening at the opera.
The couple that lives here is looking in these grand mirrors, looking out the window and pinching themselves like,
“This is heaven.”

The Modern Movement toyed with the idea that “anything can be art,” says Jonathan. He takes it a step further and demonstrates how art can be anywhere, too. By incorporating a living wall of ivy and water pools into his bathing pavilion, Jonathan creates a fresh, airy and open feeling within an enclosed space, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors, between art and the everyday.
A vanity becomes a floating display space thanks to the restrained design of an under counter lavatory from the Pop Collection. Jonathan employed the Percy Collection throughout the room because “it’s beautiful without being bossy,” an ideal minimalist trait. “My design philosophy is definitely to live with what you love,” he states. And what’s not to love in this garden of delights?
I wanted to create a gallery that someone can live in. A functional
gallery that’s beautiful yet casual, not uptight and stuffy.

CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY
— L A U R A M U L L E R —
The Contemporary Movement is always reinventing itself according to Laura, which allows her to feel both “out of control and in complete command.” From this healthy balance, she created a warm bathroom inspired by one photographer’s play of light and shadow upon a strong architectural canvas.
Intimate and sensual, Laura designed this space to respond artfully as the natural light moves gracefully from morning to afternoon to twilight to moonlight. Reclaimed teak flooring—beautiful, sustainable and ideal for wet rooms—unites this shadow-shifting room.
“The DXV Modulus Freestanding Soaking Tub is one of the most beautiful tubs I’ve seen in a very long time,” claims Laura. “Perfect for a meditative space, especially when gazing out the window at the beach.”
There’s a lot of freedom in contemporary because we’re writing
our own story as we’re in it. We’re creating our contemporary right now.

Florence Taking its cues from the curvaceous lines of the St. George Freestanding Soaking Tub, this oval-shaped library offers a uniquely relaxing respite, placing both books and bathing accessories within easy reach.
“Although the tub is the center of gravity for this room,” notes Corey, “the other areas hold their own, much like an orchestra.”
Corey looked to Florentine architecture for inspiration, incorporating classic Corinthian columns, a dome ceiling and even an intricate church window. Then he added vibrant lacquered paint, bright and abstract artwork and a toile wallpaper replete with unexpected whimsy. The result is classic yet fashion forward, a celebration of the past with a vivid nod to the now.
It’s timeless, it’s classic, it has no expiration date.
I don’t want to have any expiration dates on what I do.

Casablanca The Golden Era was a time when the handcrafted blended with the modern.
“Moroccan culture is also focused on craft and doing things in a time-honored way,” explains Kati, “but at the same time adapting that into modern life.” Appropriately, her room is based upon a hammam, an ancient bathing tradition that continues to this day.
Designing a room inspired by Casablanca has the potential of being busy and overwhelming. But Kati created a truly serene space. She kept the color palette fairly muted and selected faucets from the Keefe Collection in a matte black finish. As she says, “There’s an inherent beauty in the faucets themselves—solid and architectural. They really pop against the tile.”
It’s the contrast that I love—the glamour and the grit,
the old and the new, the rough and the refined.

Copenhagen Suggesting life on a houseboat, this bathroom brings the city of Copenhagen indoors with its use of natural materials like hewn beams, water-inspired colors and a living moss wall. But the purpose is beyond a nod to nature. “In the hygge modern bathroom, the sensorial design elevates the everyday,” explains Michele.
To achieve a sense of Nordic coziness, Michele balanced light-colored materials with the occasional geometric pattern and pop of color. The design flexibility of the DXV Modulus Collection was a natural fit, including its looks. “It’s a combination of angles and organicism, a perfect match,” says Michele. Finally, she added a hint of luxe with a built-in towel warming drawer and coffee bar—just right for achieving hygge.
I love clean lines but overlay them with bold graphics, texture,
pattern, so there’s fusion between the clean and the tactile.

Toronto A city that never looks back. Which is also a great definition for contemporary design. Even so, this elegant bathroom is sure to garner multiple looks. The rounded shower and dark tile work creates a gracious cocoon that is designed to perform double duty. “For relaxing in the evening, there’s the double rain head shower system,” explains Alison. “For rejuvenation in the morning, I included the Percy Personal Shower Set with Hand Shower.”
Alison added a few luxurious touches like a floating vanity, then introduced custom ombre fabric, strategic lighting and soft colors like blush to add warmth and quiet drama to the room’s clean lines. By incorporating two different sizes of under counter lavatories from the Pop Collection, she increased usability without threatening the room’s minimalistic origins. All that’s necessary, with nothing that’s not.
In the future, I think we’re going to see a softer, more feminine style—curvaceous
design, no sharp corners, everything is very sensuous.

Charleston This bathroom represents the Classic Movement in Charleston, 1890 to 1920, when things went from fussy and overdone to modern convenience. And that relates perfectly to what Susan did in this space, taking classical architectural elements from some of Charleston’s historic homes and pairing them with modern fixtures. A mix of old and new. Yesterday and tomorrow.
“That’s why I chose to pair the more modern Pop Round Under Counter Lavatories with classic Carrara marble,” explains Susan.
“And I placed the Fitzgerald Freestanding Soaking Tub, with its clean lines, right under the more historic Palladian spiderweb window.” Finally, a whimsical pop of green upholstery makes a bold graphic statement amongst the black-and
-white Georgian floor and grisaille wallpaper.
It was typical of this movement to bring ideas and motifs
from the old country to America and recreate them.

About Richard Recognized as a luxury kitchen design authority, Richard T. Anuszkiewicz is the Creative Director of Richar Living Lifestyle Brand. His award winning and nationally published work has lead to him to keynote speaking nationally on forward-thinking design.
New York This city in the 1920s was the Art Deco celebration of glamour and lifestyle with simplified geometries. You’ll see it in the custom mullion grid on the refrigerator, which was inspired by the top of the Chrysler Building as well as the DXV logo.
Both the Swarovski light fixtures and the La Cornue range are new takes on classic archetypes, embracing DXV’s idea of reinventing the classics. “I selected the Fresno Culinary Kitchen Faucet for the butler’s pantry because of its tall, utilitarian presence,” Richard says. “For the primary cooking center, the Fresno Single Lever Kitchen Faucet offers a beautiful sense of tailored refinement.” Together, they underscore the timeless relationship between yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s the living room
where everyone hangs out.

About Beth and Carolina Beth Dotolo and Carolina Gentry, cofounders and co-owners of Pulp Design Studios, based in Seattle and Dallas, are recognized for their modern and livable approach to design, which is infused with personality and a flair for the unexpected.
Palm Springs “Mid-century was probably the peak of Palm Springs glamour. But we wanted someone to come in and envision themselves in it today as well,” they clarify. So Beth and Carolina incorporated design elements that were modern, fresh and unique, and paired them with glamorous touches throughout.
The angular lines of the Cossu Freestanding Soaking Tub made it a dynamic focal point for their design. Behind it lies the tropical indoor/outdoor shower, a refreshing expression of desert modernism. Bright whites, bursts of colors and organic patterns are all set off by a few rich hits of quirky fun, setting the tone for a true sense of leisure that’s as timeless today as it was yesterday.
Our motto is that it’s not just about a beautiful home, it’s how you live in it. That’s our “splendid living” approach.

About Genevieve Genevieve Ghaleb, owner of XY Contemporary, a boutique interior design firm based in Montreal, has quickly become well known for her signature, custom-tailored approach to timeless contemporary interiors.
Miami Genevieve was inspired by the present-day Contemporary Movement in Miami to create this room for a busy gentleman in need of intentional daily luxury. A lot of the elements feature simple, clean lines. According to her,
“The Percy Collection Faucets capture this perfectly—their proportion is like no other I’ve seen.” So refined, they just sit back unobtrusively in this contemporary space.
“It so happens that the Equility Freestanding Soaking Tub is by far my favorite tub on the market,” she states. “It’s very curvaceous and sexy.” Genevieve likes that it is ageless, working well with the contemporary designs of today and tomorrow, yet flexible enough for historic rooms influenced by yesterday.
I have a strong appreciation for all things that are simple.
And this is not to be misunderstood for something that is boring.

ANNAKARENINA
— R E G I N A S T U R R O C K —
About Regina Since 1996, Regina’s firm has grown to include an ever-broadening international clientele who seek its classically grounded and uniquely tailored signature. Her firm, Regina Sturrock Design, has been celebrated at the prestigious SBID International Design Awards for design excellence in the field.
“When I walked into the set, they had the ‘Anna Karenina’ music playing,” says Regina. “All the classical elements, the moodiness. It actually made me cry.” Regina started at the ground level, with mid-19th-century styling. Laser-cut marble in blue and black creates a dark, dramatic atmosphere.
Then the palette gets lighter and lighter as the eye moves up. From damask velvet walls to a brilliant, theatrically lit ceiling. All of this is accented by the Landfair Bridge Lavatory Faucet, with its clean lines and cross handles, and a deep, spacious St. George Freestanding Soaking Tub.
The set was inspired by Anna Karenina, who was like a bird in a cage.
She was beautiful and glamorous. But only when she fell in love with
Vronsky did she become free.

— L I S A M E N D E —
About Lisa Born and raised in the South, Lisa Mende practices in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lisa’s designs are always about hospitality, rooted in tradition, yet with a sense of humor, a bit of drama or an element of quirkiness.
“This is a story about being from simple circumstances but hungering for money,” Lisa explains. She used the rough-hewn floors and brick walls that are part of the New York loft atmosphere, then blended them with metals and a funky zebra print on the cabinets.
She combined this with the Pop Square Vessel Lavatory and Rem Vessel Faucet, to add a modern feel. The final touches? Soft pink flowers, Michael Smith mirrors and mod sconces. “It’s about taking a bit of mid-century chic—with the lighting and the atmosphere—and combining it with classic, high-society elements. I’m striving for a unique, eclectic mode: chic and sophisticated but with a little whimsy mixed in, reminiscent of Holly Golightly herself.”
I was inspired by Holly Golightly, probably one of the first iconic
American women represented on film. I wanted to portray her life.

About Tami & Krista Krista Nye Nicholas and Tami Ramsay are the partners and principal interior designers of CLOTH & KIND, a full-service boutique design studio, showroom and shop, with locations in Michigan and Georgia, and projects nationwide. The pair is renowned for creating spaces with history and heart, story and substance.
“There was a bit of ‘tramp’ style going on in the book,” says Tami. So that’s where the partners started: with matte finishes and beautiful pieces that looked worn and old. They got textiles from a small artisanal designer in Istanbul, and worked with Paper Mills to find the rich, flocked-looking wallpaper.
The satin brass finish of the DXV Oak Hill Collection fit the tone of the story and the style of the room. “We found vintage light fixtures that illuminate and just fit with the golden hue of the space,” says Krista. “But then we had to funk it up, so we brought in our tattooed lady and hung her up with a kimono and some other artsy things.”

A ROOM WITHA VIEW
— J U S T I N S H A U L I S —
About Justin Justin Shaulis, based in New York City, has over 15 years of experience in architecture and interior design. He has worked with notable interior designers, architects and leading furniture manufacturers to create industry showcases.
“I was feeling inspired by the main character Lucy and her struggles with the two men in her life,” says Justin. “There’s the one she’s supposed to marry, versus the one who’d give her a bigger life. That’s where I started and what led me to create two vignettes.”
For the English vignette, Justin focused on the character of Cecil, who lives a prim, proper, 19th-century life. So he used this deep soaking tub and a very masculine scene. “In the light-filled Italian vignette of Lucy’s life, I used contemporary fixtures from the Equility Collection, including a trough sink,” Justin explains. “And the Percy Faucet, which has these simple ring handles, calls to mind a wedding.”
“A Room with a View” is about a woman who’s discovering her life.
I used two different vignettes to show how big and different
the world can be.

“It’s a story of unrequited love and romance,” says Rebecca. “There’s romance, sadness, anger, incredible passion. It’s also from a time when women didn’t have choices.”
To convey all of this, Rebecca and Lori had to think of every element from a richly creative and emotional point of view. They took a few unconventional liberties with design, such as the tower of three rose-strewn Pop Round Vessel Lavatories that became an exquisite, bejeweled wedding cake. The Pop Rectangle Vessel Bathroom Sink is repurposed for the kitchen and offers bold geometry with fresh appeal, plus fire clay construction and a center drain.
“Like Water for Chocolate” depicts a family whose entire history
revolves around their kitchen. Sadness, anger, passion.
We wanted to capture all of that.

“I wanted my DXV bathroom to be opulent without being ostentatious,” says Meredith. Drawing fixtures and fittings from the Golden Era Movement’s Fitzgerald and Wyatt Collections, she combined the best of Art Deco with the more modern bathroom conveniences.
“The space is both decadent and luxurious, but shows restraint—a hallmark of its contemporary sensibility. In our daily lives, we’re all trying to maximize our time, our productivity. Why wouldn’t we want that for our personal space? You want to start and end your day with a sanctuary. It’s a maximal luxury for someone who works really hard, but wants to enjoy things to the fullest.”
My inspiration was Modern Gatsby; I designed the room for Daisy.
She can create her own life and her own space. The space is for her.

Corey’s bathroom for DXV reflects both his technical design expertise and fine arts training—a blend of practicality and aesthetics that characterizes all his work.
“My industrial-chic bathroom is part late-1800s West Coast-Vancouver and part contemporary New York City loft,” Corey says.
“The Landfair Collection Faucet, from the Classic Movement, was the jumping-off point—to me it’s a fitting that evokes both 19th century and steam punk aesthetics. Inspired by the hexagon pattern of the faucet, I repeated that shape with the tile pattern on the back wall. Everything flowed from the one faucet.”
The type of design work I do really well is asymmetry. I find there
is a beautiful balance in that positive and negative space. I used this concept
in designing my bathroom space.

Marilyn’s DXV bathroom, which includes natural wood-look tile with one orange wall, began with her selection of the Contemporary Movement’s Percy Collection Faucet.
“It’s so beautiful, and its circular loop handle was the driving force behind the rest of the design, including the tile, the layout and furniture handles. I also love the soaking tub. It is huge. The straight lines fit perfectly in the industrial design. The shower head and the robe hooks all just flow together. The fixtures are not over the top. They are nice and clean.”
Industrial design is not only masculine, it can also be feminine.
I wanted to get across that you could make it a balanced design
just by using colors and textures.

Cheryl allowed the sophistication of the Golden Era Movement’s Fitzgerald Collection to lead her in a slightly new design direction: “It’s a more glamorous bathroom than my usual style,” she says.
“DXV is a very luxe brand, so I used more layers and details—luxury fabrics, wallpapered ceiling, platinum-nickel finish fittings—than in most of my projects. The design aesthetic harkens back to the ’20s or ’30s, when life was a little more glamorous. This bathroom is a place to go and unwind. If it were my bathroom, I would walk in there every single day and simply love it.”
Design isn’t pretty pictures. Design is taking the elements and really bringing them to life. Execution is just as
important—if not more important— than the design itself.

“Scandinavian design is my personal aesthetic favorite,” admits Susan, who is a first-generation Danish-American.
“I admire its modern elegance and warmth, and the simplicity of its forms, which are inspired by nature.”
Naturally, Susan’s DXV kitchen reflects that heritage, using the Classic Movement’s Hillside Apron Kitchen Sink, with its blend of country charm and uptown style, as a focal point. “The Contemporary Pot Filler,” says Susan, “is nothing less than a piece of sculpture. The sink is simple, kind of earthy. It’s a strong element.”
My inspiration was a modern cottage. It’s flexible. You can nudge it many different ways, toward
very modern or rustic or traditional.

FLIRTING WITH TRADITION
— M A R Y D O U G L A S D R Y S D A L E —
About Mary Mary Douglas Drysdale founded her own well-regarded firm in 1990. Her early exposure to American classicism, together with formal studies and a Grand Tour of Europe, left Mary with a deep understanding of the classical principles for organizing mass and space.
“The bath is the most important private room of the house. This bathroom is based on a classical plan built around the beautifully silhouetted St. George Freestanding Soaking Tub. The viewing of the tub, which is placed in front of a room-sized mirror, is intended to express glamour and bounce the natural light shining in from the nearby French doors,” says Mary.
“On the architecturally mirrored wall is a starburst mirror that is centered over the tub to add glamour and emphasis to the bathing area. Access to the shower and water closet is on axis with the French doors and is framed by architectural trim and panels. Note that the water closet area is also a library.”
What I think of when designing a bath is to create useful beauty.
That was my goal in making this bathroom for DXV.
