Electric-powered trucks are a go for General Motors. GM’s CEO Mary Barra, in a Nov. 21 announcement at ab in- vestor conference in New York, said that GM will be introducing an EV pickup truck in the fall of 2021. “General Motors understands truck buyers and . . . people who are new coming into the truck market,” Barra said. “It will be a very capable truck, I’m pretty ex- cited about it.” Reuters reported last month that GM plans to build a new family of premium electric pick- up trucks and sport-utility vehi- cles at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant beginning in late 2021, pos- sibly reviving the imposing Hum- mer brand on some of them. The Nov. 21 announcement was the latest made by Barra about GM’s Ev future. In 2018, Barra spoke at the CERAWeek en- ergy conference in Houston, where she said that GM was on a path to an all-electric future. “We’re moving fast,” Barra said. “Last year in the U.S., our own groundbreaking Chevrolet Bolt EV, Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, and Cadillac CT6 Plug-in accounted for nearly a quarter of industry EV and plug-in sales. And in China, where plug-in elec- tric sales are rising, we intro- duced the Buick Velite 5 and Bao- jun e100 along with the CT6 Plug- in. “And this is just the beginning. We are well on our way to bring- ing at least 20 new all-electric models to market by 2023 – our next step toward a zero-emis- sions world.” During that same speech, Barra said that executives at GM know how the company’s customers love their pickups and that the lat- est Chevrolets and GMCs are lighter and more fuel-efficient. Dodge is celebrating its musclememory.

The “golden age” of musclecars is now and Dodge is cele-brating the golden anniversary ofits iconic Challenger with thenew limited-production 50th An-niversary Edition, shown for thefirst time last week at 2019 Auto-Mobility LA, said FCA spokes-woman Kristin Starnes.

When the Dodge Challengerfirst entered in the muscle carranks of Detroit’s Big Three 50years ago, it arrived, saidStarnes, with something its com-petitors didn’t have: the greatestrange of powertrain choices inthe industry, from the small butdurable 225-cubic-inch “SlantSix” to the fearsome “ElephantMotor” – the 426 Hemi.

A half-century later, the DodgeChallenger still leads the pack,Starnes said. It is able to do thatbecause it has the most powerfulmuscle car powertrains in the in-dustry, ranging from the Pentas-tar V6 engine to the fastest, mostpowerful muscle car, the 797-horsepower Dodge ChallengerSRT Hellcat Redeye.

“2020 marks the 50th Anniver-sary of the Dodge Challenger,one of the most storied musclecars in history,” said Tim Ku-niskis, global head of Alfa Romeoand head of Passenger Cars –Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat,FCA – North America.

Detroit, plans to begin produc-tion in the second half of 2020 onan electric pickup that starts at$69,000 and has a battery rangeof 400-plus miles.The EV truck announcements

came the same week that Fordannounced it was going to buildan EV Mustang SUV.That vehicle will be the first

all-electric SUV, marking thestart of an avalanche of battery-powered vehicles coming frommainstream and luxury automak-ers during the next two yearsthat industry analysts say willboost electric vehicle sales.AP reported that analysts ex-

pect the number of electric vehi-cles for sale in the U.S. to growfrom 16 currently to as many as80 by 2022. They say the in-creased selection and longerrange of the new vehicles willmake them more popular.Ford’s Mustang Mach E SUV

will go 230 miles between 300miles per charge. It will start at$44,000, not including a $7,500federal tax credit.

New Trailblazer Seeks to Conquer the Small SUV Market

American Axle & Manufactur-ing Holdings, Inc. has reportedits financial results for the thirdquarter 2019 and updated its fullyear financial outlook, said com-pany spokesman ChristopherSon.

Third quarter 2019 resultsshowed sales of $1.68 billionwith net cash provided by oper-ating activities of $241.7 million;Adjusted free cash flow of $160.5million.

AAM’s third quarter financialresults were hurt by a work stop-page at the company’s largestcustomer (GM work stoppage)that began on Sept. 15, Son said.

“AAM’s financial results in thethird quarter of 2019 reflect solidoperating performance despitelower than expected productionvolumes resulting from the GMwork stoppage,” said AAM’sCEO, David C. Dauch. “Thestrong free cash flow generatedduring the quarter, along withthe announced sale of our U.S.iron casting operations, positionus to continue to deliver on ourcommitment to reduce debt andstrengthen our financial profile.”

AAM’s sales in the third quar-ter of 2019 were $1.68 billion ascompared to $1.82 billion in thethird quarter of 2018 because itssales in the third quarter werehurt by the GM work stoppageby approximately $57 million.

AAM’s net loss in the thirdquarter of 2019 was $124.2 mil-lion, or $1.10 per share, as com-pared to net income of $63.8 mil-lion, or $0.55 per share in thethird quarter of 2018.

AAM has revised its 2019 fi-nancial targets to reflect the ex-pected impact of the GM workstoppage on our full year sales,which we estimate to be approxi-mately $250 million, Son said.

These targets also reflect theimpact of lower metal marketpassthroughs and foreign cur-rency translation of approxi-mately $50 million and assume afull year of financial results fromits U.S. iron casting operations.

PHOENIX (AP) – Google spinoffWaymo is trying to educate emer-gency responders on how to dealwith its autonomous vehicles.

Waymo released a trainingvideo on YouTube Nov. 22 gearedtoward guiding public safety offi-cials responding to incidents in-volving their self-driving cars.

The 14-minute instructionalvideo advises emergency respon-ders on how they can put a carin manual mode and what pre-cautions firefighters should takeif they should ever have to putout a fire in an autonomous vehi-cle.

video was done in conjunctionwith Waymo engineers and sub-urban Phoenix police and fire-fighters.

Waymo is among several com-panies that has been testing au-tonomous vehicle programs inArizona.

The video comes two days af-ter the National TransportationSafety Board found a distractedhuman safety driver caused a fa-tal crash of an autonomous Ubercar.

The NTSB also condemned alack of state and federal regula-tion on testing autonomous vehi-cles on public roads.

The November light vehiclemarket is not expected to be aturkey, according to a Cox Auto-motive sales forecast releasedtoday, but it isn’t expected to flyeither, said Cox spokesman MarkSchirmer.The seasonally adjusted annu-

al rate (SAAR) is forecast to fin-ish near 16.9 million, up fromlast month’s strike-impacted 16.5million level, but down slightlyfrom the current 2019 year-to-date pace near 17.0 million. Totalsales through October 2019 aredown 1.4 percent compared tolast year, and this trend is ex-pected to continue. Sales vol-ume, supported by an extra sell-ing day, is expected to finishdown 0.4 percent compared toNovember 2018. Sales, however,will be up nearly 4 percent fromlast month.One key factor will be incen-

tives, which generally rise at theend of the year as OEMs try topush old inventory to make wayfor new products.Black Friday and year-end

sales promotions have becomean important part of the sell-down strategy and are evenmore important in a downwardmoving retail market.Another key factor for Novem-

ber’s results will be the recoveryof GM sales in the wake of thelong strike. Cox Automotive Sen-ior Economist Charlie Ches-brough said GM fleet activity,and likely some retail, was signif-icantly lower in October by tensof thousands of units as a strikedisrupted deliveries. The ques-tion for the market this month iswhether these sales were simplydelayed, replaced or canceled.The all-time sales record for

Demand for diesel-poweredpickup trucks is good news foremployees at GM’s Brookville,Ohio, plant.Due to the growing strength of

GM’s new 2020 Chevrolet Silvera-do and GMC Sierra heavy-dutypickups, General Motors andIsuzu are making a $175 millioninvestment through their DMAXjoint venture to build a new,diesel engine components plantin Brookville, said GMspokesman Dan Flores.The new 251,000-square-foot

facility would expand the pro-duction of critical engine compo-nents for the company’s currentDMAX diesel engine manufactur-ing operation in Moraine, Ohio.DMAX is a joint venture, 60

percent owned by GM, 40 per-cent owned by Isuzu Diesel Serv-ices of America, Inc.The new investment will create

more than 100 new manufactur-ing jobs at the Brookville site,Flores said.Preliminary work has already

begun at the site, with construc-tion expected to be completedby the end of 2020. When thenew Brookville site is up and run-ning, it will operate concurrentlywith the current DMAX opera-tions in Moraine.“Strong demand for GM’s all-

new family of Chevrolet and GMCheavy- and medium-duty pickupsis driving us to find ways to buildmore Duramax diesel engines,”said Gerald Johnson, GM’s execu-tive vice president of Global Man-ufacturing. “The Brookville in-vestment will enable us to ma-chine more engine blocks andheads and ultimately enable ourDMAX engine plant in Moraine tobuild more 6.6-liter diesel en-gines for our Flint truck assemblyplant.”Heavy-duty trucks make up
