Great wine doesnt need to cost a bunch.

Making wine differently.

In 1925, Yankel Hirsh Segal and his family emigrated to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv. Brothers Elhanan and Yehezkel established Israels first distillery in the German colony Sharona in Tel Aviv. Their experience and reputation led them, in the 1930s, to be asked by the French rulers to set up distilleries in Beirut and Damascus. In 1954, the family decided to concentrate on wine production. The winery moved to Ramla, and was called the Zvi Vineyard. The name was later changed to Segal Wines. All the winerys bottles bear the Segal wine logo, reproduced in Zvi Hirshs own handwriting.

Jewish history lacks little in the Tears Department. Witness Megillas Eicho, called (in English) Lamentations and the fact that, for insiders, the expression bearing the date of national mourning, tisha be-av, the ninth of Av, stands for just about any sorrowful occasion.

Crying (also called sobbing, weeping, wailing, whimpering, bawling, or blubber-ing) is the shedding of tears in response to an emotional state in humans.

We all know that crying can help

release negative, stressful or sad feelings, but did you know that having a good cry can have some other health benefits as well? Check out these little known tear-jerk reactions and turn on the water works.

1. Crying can actually be good at helping you reduce stress by getting rid of certain chemicals and hormones that have been building up from too much stress.

2. Shedding a tear can balance your mood. In much the same way as it helps reduce stress, crying plays on your endocrine system, triggering a release of endorphins (the feel good hormones).

12 reasons babies cry and how to soothe them

So how are parents supposed to know what their baby is trying to tell them? It can be tricky to interpret your childs cries, especially at first.

Here we list a professionals most common reasons ba-bies cry. If your little one is wailing and you dont know why, work your way down the list. Chances are youll find something that helps.

1. Hunger

This is probably the first thing you think of when your baby cries.

Learning to recognize the signs of hunger will help you start your babys feed-ings before the crying stage. Some signs to watch for in newborns: fussing, smacking of lips, rooting (a newborn reflex that causes babies to turn their head toward your hand when you stroke their cheek), and putting their hands to their mouth.

2. A dirty diaper

Some babies let you know right away when they need to be changed. Others can tolerate a dirty diaper for quite a while.

Either way, this one is easy to check and simple to remedy.

3. Needs sleep

Arent babies lucky? When theyre tired they can simply go to sleep anytime, anywhere. Or so adults like to think.

In reality, its harder for them than you might think. Instead of nodding off, babies may fuss and cry, especially if theyre overly tired.

4. Wants to be held

Babies need a lot of cuddling. They like to see their parents faces, hear their

voices, and listen to their heartbeats, and can even detect their

unique smell. Crying can be their way of asking to be held close.

You may wonder if youll

spoil your baby by holding him

so much, but during the first few

months of life that isnt possible. To give

your arms some relief, try wearing your baby in a

front carrier or sling.

5. Tummy troubles (gas, colic, and more)

Tummy troubles associated with gas or colic can lead to lots of crying. In fact, the rather mysterious condition called colic is defined as inconsolable crying for at least three hours a day, at least three days a week, at least three weeks in a row.

If your baby often fusses and cries right after being fed, he may be feeling some sort of tummy pain. Many parents swear by over-the-counter anti-gas drops for babies. Get your doctors okay before using.

Even if your baby isnt colicky and has never been fussy after

eating, an occasional bout of gas pain can make him miserable until he works it out. If you suspect gas, try something simple to eliminate it such as putting him on his back, holding his feet, and moving his legs in a gentle bicycling motion.

6. Needs to burp

Burping isnt mandatory. But if your baby cries after a feeding, a good burp may be all he needs.

Babies swallow air when they feed or suck from a bottle, and if the air isnt released it may cause some discomfort. Some babies are intensely bothered by having air in their tummy, while others dont seem to burp or need to be burped much at all.

7. Too cold or too hot

When your baby feels chilly, such as when you remove his clothes to change a diaper or clean his bottom with a cold wipe, he may protest by crying.

Newborns like to be bundled up and kept warm but not too warm. As a rule, theyre comfortable wearing one more layer than you need to be comfortable. Babies are less likely to complain about being too warm

than about being too cold, and they wont cry about it as vigorously.

8. Something small

Babies can be troubled by something as hard to spot as a hair wrapped tightly around a tiny toe or finger, cutting off circulation. (Doctors call this painful situa-tion a hair tourniquet, and its one of the first things they look for if a baby seems to be crying for no reason.)

Some babies are extra sensitive to things like scratchy clothing tags or fabric. And they can be very picky about subtleties ranging from the position theyre held in to the bottle you offer.

9. Teething

Teething can be painful as each new tooth pushes through tender young gums. Some babies suffer more than others, but all are likely to be fussy and tearful at some point along the way.

Your baby seems to be in pain and youre not sure why? Try feeling his gums with your finger. You may be surprised to discover the hard nub of a baby tooth on its way in.

On average, the first tooth breaks through between 4 and 7 months, but it can happen earlier.

10. Wants less stimulation

Babies learn from the stimula-tion of the world around them,

but sometimes they have a hard time processing it all the lights, the noise, being passed from hand to hand.

Crying can be a babys way of saying, Ive had enough.

about Babies Crying

There are people who dont mind hearing babies cry. They ignore a baby in distress, wont pick the baby up so as not to spoil him, think nothing of leaving babies crying alone for hours in a dark room. We know these people exist because we read articles about them all time. But seriously, who are they? Did you ever encounter a parent like this? Most of us normal folks never did.

The Yiddishe parents and caregivers we know and have known are of a very different ilk 180 degrees different, in

fact. Were jolted by our babys slightest expression of discomfort or dismay. Our instinct is to do anything in our power to stop a baby from crying. When our babys cries arent easily abated were

unnerved, frustrated, feel like complete failures. One sound from the baby, and the pressure we feel is enormous. Make the crying stop so I can breathe again.

Perhaps we shush, rock, jiggle, use electric swings, washing machines, paci-fiers, drive all over the neighborhood, and feed babies for hours on end, afraid to stop even while they sleep lest they wake up and cry. Our own discomfort is better than bearing even a moment of our babys.

We do our best to discern the differ-ent cries and respond appropriately, but doubts and comparisons loom Appar-ently, tribal babies dont cry, so whats the matter with us?

A demanding baby may be outgoing and eager to see the world.

And often the only way to stop the crying and fussing is to stay active. This can be exhausting for you!

Plan plenty of activities. Hang out with other parents with babies. Go on regular outings.

12. Not feeling well

If youve met your babys basic needs and comforted him and hes still crying, he could be coming down with something. You may want to check his temperature to rule out a fever and be alert for other signs of illness.

The cry of a sick baby tends to be distinct from one caused by hunger or frustration. If your babys crying just doesnt sound right, trust your instincts and call or see a doctor.

What to do if your babys still crying

Full tummy? Check. Clean diaper? Check. Fever-free? Check.

So why is your baby crying? Babies have their own good reasons. But even the wisest parents cant read their babies mind and babies dont have the words to tell us whats wrong.

Fortunately, you can offer comfort without knowing the cause of distress. Youll find lots of tried-and-true methods in our article on what to do when your baby cries for no reason.

Later, when we have to say no to our toddlers, they object to our decision and end up crying. This

also feels innately wrong. So we either find ways to distract our child or just give in and please him instead, which then causes our children to make increasingly unreasonable demandsbecause they desperately need our no and their cry.

Thankfully there are some intelligent, insightful, compassionate voices of reason out there. They help us understand that an infants cries are not only okay, they serve an important purpose. When babies cry, our job is to tune in, provide help, love and support as needed, but not necessarily stop the crying.

To follow the advice, do not let your baby cry, is practically impossible. At times the harder a mother or father tries to stop the babys crying, the more anxious everyone becomes.

1. When we calm ourselves, were able to listen and respond to the true need

When we follow our impulse to quickly stop the crying, we arent taking the time to listen to and understand our babys cues and less likely to validate the babys communication by giving her what she really needs.

2. Crying is natural, healthy healing

Fortunately, babies come equipped with a repair kit, and can overcome the ef-fects of stress through the natural healing mechanism of crying. Research has shown that people of all ages benefit from a good cry, and tears help to restore the bodys chemical balance following stress.

3. Passing down our discomfort

Its painful to listen to a crying baby. Grown-ups tend to overreact to a childs cry. Why? Because crying often stirs up

painful memories of our own childhood, churning up issues of abandonment and fear.

4. Calm breeds calm

There is no one more sensitive than an infant and the people he is most sensitive to are his parents. Every interac-tion we have is an educational experience. Babies want what all of us want when we cry to be heard, understood, and helped if possible.

5. We bond through gentle, calm listening and observing, honesty and acceptance.

What can parents do? First of all, it is important to check for immediate needs and discomforts, such as hunger or coldness. But if your baby is still fussy after you have filled her basic needs, it is quite appropriate simply to hold her lovingly and allow her to continue crying. L
