Come along as Tidbits brings you some interesting facts about these ominous vents in the earth’s crust, that spew forth molten rock, steam, toxic gases and heavy ash on anything and everything for miles around! Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe, and the only one to have erupted within the last 100 years. Nearby, but apart from the European mainland, is the island of Sicily, home to Mount Etna. The Etna volcano is considerably more active, having experienced a series of major eruptions within the past decade. Vesuvius is a strato volcano, so named because it has explosive eruptions as well as pyroclastic flows. This means it emits a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock that can reach vertical speeds upward of 450 mph and reach temperatures of 1,800 degrees F. Vesuvius was formed from the movement of two tectonic plates. Volcanoes are usually found where plates are either drifting away from each other or, as in the case of Vesuvius, colliding under immense pressure and heat. • The most lava ever recorded in an eruption from Vesuvius was in 1906. Italy was preparing for the 1908 Summer Olympics when the disaster occurred, causing extensive damage to the city of Naples and killing more than 100 people. Because SOME EXPLOSIVE FACTS ABOUT MT. We’ve seen him as an alien hunter, a Civil War General, astronaut, a reverend, a villain, and loving father. Here is a glance at the 50+-year acting career of this famous Canadian, and a look at the real Donald Sutherland. • Born in Saint John, NewBrunswick, Donald

Edward McNichol Sutherland was a sicklychild, struggling with rheumatic fever, hepatitis, and polio myelitis. He spent many of hisyoungeryearsinNovaScotia,withhisfirstpart-time job there as a news correspondent for a local radio station at age 14. While in high school, Sutherland appeared in a few stage productions, carrying this interest on at the University of Toronto. He graduated with a double major, engineering and drama, with intentions of a career as an engineer. He changed his mind however, and headed for London in 1957 to attend the city’s Academy of MusicandDramaticArt.

• Sutherlandhadhisfirst role in a1963Britishfilm, and after several other small parts, helanded a major role in 1967. After another actor had dropped out of the filming of The Dirty Dozen, he was offered the part in the popular filmwhichwas thefifthhighestgrossingfilmof the year. Two years later, he was once again a soldier in both the smash hit M*A*S*H* (as Hawkeye Pierce) and Kelly’s Heroes, along with Clint Eastwood. His career received another boost in 1971 with his role as a private detectiveoppositeJaneFondain Klute, and as a grieving father in the Oscar-winning Ordinary People in 1980.

• A stream of steady roles has continued fordecades for Sutherland, including Cold Mountain, Pride & Prejudice, and The Italian Job. Although he is nearing 80, his popularity remains, as evidenced most recently by his appearance in The Hunger Games films asPresident Snow.

• Sutherlandhasfrequentlybeencastintheroleof a villain. At one point, when being considered for a great role, he was told by the producers, “Sorry, you’re the best actor, but this part calls for a guy-next-door type. You don’t look as if you’ve ever lived next door to anyone.”

She waited for them to sit down, and then began. “Question One:Which tire on the car was flat?”

Italy did not have the funds or the time needed to rebuild Naples and prepare for the events, the Olympics had to be moved to London.

• MostfolksknowthatthecataclysmicerruptionofMountVesuviusin79A.D.destroyedthecityof Pompeii and caused a death toll estimated of at least 16,000. The violent burst of volcanic ash billowed to heights of 12 miles and more, andtheflowofmoltenrockandpumicespewedforth at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second!

• Therapidfalloutmadeitimpossibletobreathe, with millions of tons of the hot, thick and powdery ash burying the city and filling thelungs of every living creature. The suddenness of the event caught the entire population unaware, resulting in a well-preserved “frozen” scene of the ancient city in the act of its routine daily life. Strangely enough, the ash hardened around the victims’ bodies before they decayed over the centuries. The remaining pockets of air enabled excavators to carefully pour plaster through holes into the mold-like forms to make casts of the bodies, which remained in the exact positions as they were at death.

• ThePompeiiruinswerediscoveredin1748bya surveying engineer during the digging of a water line. Excavation on the ruins soon began, with eager archaeologists discovering paved streets, homes, buildings, public squares, jarsof fruit preserves still intact, and even a loaf of bread with the thumb print impression of the baker before his hasty departure. The massive project has continued for more than 260 years, making it the longest continuously excavated site in the world.

• Now,some250yearsintoPompeii’sexcavation,some 1,050 casts have been created from the impressions of found bodies. It is believed that nearly one-third of the city still lies buried. In1980,300morebodieswerediscovered innearby Herculaneum.

• One eyewitness account survived from the79 A.D. Vesuvius eruption is that of Pliny the Younger, who observed the tragedy from across the Bay of Naples. Pliny, a Romanstatesman, documented the details of the death of his uncle, who was attempting to rescue people during the early stages of the eruption. Pliny later interviewed survivors and recorded the information in letters to a friend who was an historian. Those who study volcanoes use the term “Plinian” to refer to large volcanic eruptions in which streams of gas and ash are violently spewed to a height of several miles.

• There have been many Vesuvius eruptionssince the annihilation of Pompeii, at least one every century, although none has been as large as the Plinian eruption of 79 A.D. Vesuvius erupted at least six times in the 12th and 18th centuries, and eight times during the 1800s. The 20th century experienced three eruptions with the most recent in 1944, when a two-week-long event occurred. American airmen werestationedat thePompeiiAirfieldduringWorld War II, a few miles from the base of thevolcano.Themenfledwhen theeruptionbegan, leaving behind 88 aircraft, all of which were a total loss. Twelve lives were lost as a result of this eruption.

•TodaytheslopesofVesuviusarecoveredwithheavy vegetation and shrubs, and vineyards have been planted. Although its current activity seems to produce nothing but occasional steam from vents at the bottom of the crater, geologists who study the mountain maintain that it is a very dangerous volcano that will definitely erupt again.Because it is themostdensely-populated volcanic region in the world, withmorethan3millionpeoplelivingwithin20 miles of the crater, a major eruption today will be far more devastating than any previous ones. While the 79 A.D. eruption destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, many larger cities would now be buried, including Naples, which is Europe’s 9th most populated urban area and Italy’s 4th largest urban economy.

• In 1995, the Italian government officiallydeclared the area around the volcano a national park, thereby prohibiting further building

in an attempt to reduce the population in the danger zone. They have demolished illegally constructedbuildingsandevenofferedfinancialincentives to citizens for moving away.

• Touristsareallowedvehicleaccessbyroadto660 feet (200 m) below the Vesuvius summit. A walkway circling around the mountain leads up from there to the edge of the crater.

• Scientistsconsideravolcanotobeactive if ithas erupted within the last 10,000 years. There are about 1,500 volcanoes worldwide that meetthiscriteria,withmostalongthePacificRingofFire.About50erupteachyear.Morethan160volcanoes in theUnitedStatesfit inthe active category, the majority of those in the Cascade Range, stretching from southernBritish Columbia to northern California.

Finding Extra Money When you need a little extra money, chanc-es are you can find some if you know where to look. Even a small change in your habits can leave more money in your wallet. Here are a few suggestions: ● If you have a collection or a hobby, sell off your duplicates, such as stamps, postcards or coins (don’t be tempted to buy new pieces with the money you get, lest you defeat the purpose). ● Check banks and credit unions to see if you can find a better interest rate than you have now. ● Go generic at the grocery store for one month. Buy the cheaper store brands. Some of those, in fact, are the same quality and in some cases even better than the more popular brands. ● If you’re gone all day, consider whether the expense of a programmable thermostat will save on your energy and fuel bills. In summer, they can be set to a warmer temperature while you’re gone during the day, and then cool down to wel-come you when you arrive home. They operate the same way with your furnace in the cold winter months. Hint: Start looking now for the heat-saving clear plastic window coverings, before you find they’re all gone. ● Pay attention to the credit-card ads that come in the mail. If you find one that says, for ex-ample, zero interest for 18 months if you do a bal-ance transfer, that’s worth paying attention to. Even if you only transfer one high-interest card, you’ll save money. But beware the interest rate that takes effect on that new card after that period expires. Al-ways read the small print first. ● Make a list of your bartering talents. You might know more than you think you do (sewing, bi-cycle repair, oil change, house painting) and those skills have value to someone else. Check the bar-ter section of Craigslist.org for ideas. Also scroll through the “Wanted” list to see what you might have that someone else will buy. Your old albums and 45s, musical instruments, books and vintage computer games might fetch a few dollars - and free up some space for you. ● Cancel your gym membership. Seriously,

if you haven’t used it more than twice since Janu-ary, do you really think you’re going to start up again? ● Are you reading all those magazines that arrive each month? Would you really miss them if they quit coming? If not, cancel them out now and get your money back on the balance of the sub-scription. ● Put your loose change in a jar on your dresser when you empty your pockets each day. You won’t miss it -- and don’t take any out until the jar is full. Start a new savings account just for these deposits -- and let it build. You’ll be amazed at how fast and how much it grows. It’s like free money! ● Do an hourly comparison: Before you make an unnecessary purchase, calculate how many hours you’d have to work to pay for it. ● Before you fill up the tank, check www.gasbuddy.com to compare prices in your area. Best bet: Before making any purchase, con-sider whether you’d feel better with the item in hand -- or with the money still in your wallet.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to [email protected].

● It was ancient Greek philosopher Plato who made the following sage observa-tion: “Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.”

● How would you like to brush your teeth with salt, chalk or ground brick? The first tooth powders that were used with tooth-brushes were made of just such materials.

● When you think of hibernating bears, you typically imagine some cozy cave in the woods, right? Well, the next time you’re out for a winter hike, you’d bet-ter pay close attention to exactly where you’re going; some bears spend the cold season curled up on the ground in large nests made of branches.

● Greyhounds have better vision than any other breed of dog.

● Every May, horse lovers flock to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, to see the world’s finest thoroughbreds race in the Kentucky Derby. While there, spectators will collectively consume more than 1,800 gallons of mint juleps.

● If you’re a cat lover, you might not be surprised to learn that a group of felines can be referred to as a glaring, a pounce, a clutter or a clowder. Feral cats en mass-es are known as a destruction of cats.

● People who sustain brain injuries can suffer from a variety of maladies. One of the stranger ones is anosognosia. The victim suffers from some sort of disabil-ity, such as losing the ability to move a limb, but that’s not unusual; what makes anosognosia so fascinating is that the person suffering from the limitation seems completely unable to believe that any limitation exists, despite voluminous evi-dence to the contrary. ***Thought for the Day: “The only differ-ence between me and a madman is that I am not mad.” -- Salvador Dali

“We care deeplyabout you andthe results youwish to achieve”

Working out is hard. Really hard. And that’s true whether you’re into building up your biceps or whittling down your waistline.

So, if you’re going to put so much energy into something, you want the maximum re-sults. Which is why many people turn to a personal trainer. “Most people get a trainer because they’re frustrated,” says Colt Thomp-son, founder and CEO of Cutting Edge Trainers (760-984-9691). “They work out a lot, they use all the latest, greatest equipment, but they don’t get the results they want.” The problem, of course, is knowledge. In order to get the best results, you not only have to work yourself into a nice juicy sweat, you have to do it in the right way. Thompson prides himself on the results he gets for clients; so much so that he offers something unheard of in the personal training field - a 100% money back guarantee if you’re not happy with the new you in three months time. And it doesn’t matter if you look like Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger and have lost 20% body fat; if you don’t feel better, Thompson writes you a check. But how is he so sure he can whip you back

to your college waistline and have you feeling like you could climb Everest? “It all goes back to our knowledge base,” he says. “Our staff of trainers are all degreed in exercise science and CPR qualified,

and required to do a minimum of five hours a week of study to stay current.” Their role, as far as you’re concerned, is to: One, prevent injury; two, attain desired results in the shortest possible time. Thompson doesn’t take that task lightly; he sees too many trainers work-ing the gyms in a “pump ‘em up, pump “em out” mode, which is not only less efficient for the client, he says, but po-

tentially dangerous. “That approach doesn’t take each individual’s specific needs into account,” says Thompson. Since each body is different, Thompson takes vital signs on every client and has retained the services of a cardiologist, cardiac care nurses and nutritionists to consult for any unique concerns. As a former graduate of the United States Army Academy of Health Sciences and a Special Forces paramedic, you can rest assured you’re in capable hands. And don’t think you’ll get away with slacking off, either.

Q: Do you have any news about “Vi-kings”? -- Bob L. in Minnesota

A: I do have some casting news: History announced that for season three of the hit histori-cal drama, Lothaire Bluteau will portray Emperor Charles of France, a powerful man who views bat-tling the Vikings as spiritual and earthly; Kevin Durand will play the Wanderer, a mysterious man who is not what he seems; Morgane Polanski has been cast as Princess Gisla, the elegant, self-possessed daughter of Emperor Charles; and Ben Robson will play Kalf, Lagertha’s (Katheryn Winnick) trusted second in command.

Q: I can’t seem to get enough of “Fall-ing Skies”! Can you tell me if it will be back next summer? -- Dean P., via email * * *

A: “Falling Skies” will indeed return to TNT next summer to wrap up its epic story during its fifth (and final) season. Ten new episodes in sum-mer 2015 will tie a pretty (or not-so-pretty) bow on the hit sci-fi drama, and I’m hoping that all of our

questions will be answered. But, now that I think about it, I kind of hope all of our questions WON’T be answered so there will be a reason for a future big-screen version of the series (like “Star Trek” and “The X-Files”). And speaking of hit dramas, TNT also has re-newed two more of its chart-topping summer series: Freshman drama “The Last Ship” will be back for a 13-episode season two (up from a 10-episode first season). Courtroom/crime drama “Major Crimes” also has been renewed for a fourth season, with a 15-episode order. ***

Q: My mom told me that she heard my favorite book, “The Red Tent,” is being made into a movie. Is that true? If so, can you tell me what you know about it? -- Jessica G., Reno, Nevada

A: Production began in May in Morocco on Lifetime’s major two-night miniseries “The Red Tent,” which is based on the best-selling novel by Anita Diamant. For those unfamiliar with the book, “The Red Tent” is the sweeping tale of Dinah, the daughter of Leah and Jacob, who was seen only in small glimpses in the Old Testament. The minise-ries will air later this year, and stars Minnie Driver, Morena Baccarin, Rebecca Ferguson (as Dinah), Iain Glen, Will Tudor and Debra Winger. The miniseries begins with Dinah’s happy childhood spent inside the red tent, where only the

Told through Dinah’s eyes, the film recounts the sto-ry of her mothers Leah (Minnie), Rachel (Morena), Zilpah and Bilhah -- the four wives of Jacob (Iain) -- and Jacob’s courtship of them. The saga continues as Dinah matures and experiences an intense love that subsequently leads to a devastating loss, chang-ing her and her family’s lives forever. When the Ship is Sinking, Get Everyone in the Lifeboat Dear Mary: My wife and I made a terrible mistake and bought a house that I don’t think we can afford. We dumped all of our money from the sale of our last home into it and now we have run out of money. It is not even close to being done. My wife is a stay-at-home mother of three and I work full time. I bring home about $5,500 per month with a house payment of $2,230. We have a $442 car payment and credit card minimum payments of about $250. My wife has student loans of around $26,000 with pay-ments of $293 per month. We have moved my oldest son to six differ-ent homes in eight years, but he has remained in the same school. My wife says we cannot sell this house under any circumstance because of fear of damaging him. Also, she is embarrassed and does not want anyone to know that we got in over our heads. She has always dreamed of having a big beautiful home, and I want to give this to her because she deserves it. I need help. I have never been so scared. On one hand I feel this is unsustainable, and on the other I am scared of losing my family if I tell them we can’t afford to live here. -- Jeff S.

Mystery Illness Killing Vets What IS this mysterious illness that’s killing veterans? Story 1: In Kentucky, an Army veteran died in 2013 at the Department of Veterans Affairs hos-pital. According to his mother’s Facebook page, the death certificate said, “The ultimate etiology of his illness that led to his passing is still unknown.” It seems like doctors would have given this obviously ill veteran special care. As usual, the devil is in the details. On her Facebook page, the mother talks of medical staff forcing her bedridden son to “sign a contract” agreeing to do whatever staff said ... under threat of withholding progressive treat-ment. She talks of being told he was only “taking up space.” She tells of care meetings being canceled, nurses ignoring emergency alarms, and open, hand-size wounds on his back. He weighed 72 pounds when he died. He left a wife and two young sons. Story 2: In Alabama, a veteran is desperate not to starve to death. After three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he knew he had PTSD and went to the VA with symptoms that include extreme nausea and vomiting. He eventually lost his job and his fiancee over it. VA doctors couldn’t put a name on his illness. Their solution: Cut a hole in his stomach so he can feed himself Boost milkshakes with a stomach pump as his only nutrition. VA officials then said it’s not their problem, so they wouldn’t pay for his stomach pump or sup-plies anymore because it’s past the “authorized ser-vice period.” Now that the veteran has shrunk from 267 pounds down to 130, they’re going to do some more tests. The VA has a page that describes these unex-plained illnesses, saying they’re presumptive for ser-vice connection. Undiagnosed illness with abnormal weight loss is listed. Why can’t they figure out what this is?

Dear Jeff: You are right. Devoting 60 percent of your net income to debt is unsustainable. Your ship is about to capsize. You have a choice to go down with this sinking ship along with all of your passen-gers or move quickly to get everyone into a lifeboat and safely to shore. Find someone to take care of the kids for a few hours and get your wife out of the house. Go to a quiet place where you can talk uninterrupted. Put your emotions aside and lay it all out. You cannot afford this house. You must sell it. Each day you delay brings you one day closer to foreclosure and bankruptcy. Your wife is not your little princess; you are not her sugar daddy. She is your financial partner. Together, you made one colossal mistake. You went absolutely house crazy. You let someone else (Realtor? lender?) tell you on how much house you could afford. Jeff, you cannot continue to live in fear -- fear of your wife being embarrassed, fear of not giving her the home she’s always dreamed of, fear that you’ll ruin an 8-year-old forever if he has to move again, fear that if you tell the truth you will lose your family. Put your emotions aside and face facts. Trust your wisdom, step up and take a leadership role in this family. Eventually they will respect you for it. * * * Dear Mary: I have two credit card debts $15,989 at 9.24 percent and $12,619 at 9.00 per-cent. I received a check from an inheritance for $12,370. Should I pay some on both accounts or lump the whole amount on one? I currently am able to pay $400 a month towards each balance. We have $650,000 in retirement accounts and both of us contribute 15 percent to our 401k plans. Thanks! -- Sandy

Dear Sandy: Pay off that smaller balance. Come up with the additional $300 or so from somewhere and get it paid in full. Start making $800 monthly payments to the remaining balance.

You’ll be debt-free in about 20 months. Put those cards away and do not add another nickel in new purchases. Happy for this windfall, sorry it has to go to pay debt.

A Trend that Needs To End In Shakespeare’s day, something was rot-ten in the state of Denmark. Nowadays, something’s rotten in the United States. That something in two words: disposable animals. One of the saddest aspects of our citizenry is this sticky notion that animals are disposable. One of the ways that plays out is in the ongoing practice of dumping dogs of a certain age at the local shelter. For most of us, this is unimaginable. But for too many others, it’s ridiculously justifiable: He’s sick, and I can’t afford to take him to the vet. He’s high-maintenance. He’s not as fast, not as much fun. He’s not as cute as he was as a puppy. And on and on. Forgive the pun, but that dog don’t hunt. Older dogs make fantastic companion ani-mals. They are typically more relaxed, more content, less rambunctious and far less inclined to cause trou-ble than their puppy counterparts. For many, this calm, cool and collected older dog is the reward of enduring puppyhood, with its housebreaking, teeth-ing, nipping and chewing challenges. No one is more aware of this fact than shel-ter workers. And I happen to reside in a county that hosts some of the best. The citizens of El Dorado (Calif.) County are blessed with an outstanding animal welfare organiza-tion: PAWED. People for Animal Welfare in El Do-rado (of which my wife and I are members) is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of companion animals. Boy, do they see it all. In addition to senior dumping, they see peo-ple go on vacation and leave their dog alone in the yard. Many of these dogs try to escape (who could blame them?), and when they do, PAWED picks them up and houses and cares for them. They witness the consequences of “breed trends.” Paris Hilton gets a Chihuahua; everyone wants a Chihuahua. Puppy mills and breeders start pumping out Chihuahuas. Next thing you know, shelters are full of unwanted Chihuahuas. The thing

about trends is they always come to an end. Who pays the price? The animals, organiza-tions like PAWED and the people who want to adopt from them. When a shelter is operating at beyond ca-pacity -- and almost all are these days -- it is forced to raise adoption fees to cover costs. Higher fees, in turn, keep people from adopting. It’s a sickening cycle that demonstrates the high cost of careless be-havior. One way to stop or at least slow the cycle is for animal lovers who want to support the good work of their local shelters to make a donation to that shel-ter to subsidize adoption fees. Low adoption fees are key to keeping shelters an attractive alternative to buying from breeders, brokers and pet stores. This year more than any other, I’d encourage

The Dark Side ofNiacin We can add one more item to the list of things we thought were good for us ... and now know probably aren’t. The culprit this time is our old friend niacin, aka vitamin B-3. Many of us with troublesome cholesterol levels have been on statins to reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack. Niacin has been added to our list of go-to drugs for many years because when combined with statins, it is known to reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol and raise the level of the good (HDL) cholesterol. So far, so good. However, new research reported in The New England Journal of Medicine has determined that: 1) statins alone do a good job of prevent-ing strokes and heart attacks, and 2) just because niacin has helped folks achieve better LDL and HDL numbers doesn’t automatically mean that it helps to prevent strokes and heart attacks. Turns out it doesn’t. Even worse, niacin can have its own set of side effects. Some are merely annoying (flushing, which can be offset by pairing niacin with laropip-rant), while others are downright serious (gastroin-testinal problems, bleeding, rashes and ulcers). Those in the study who took niacin were 32 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabe-tes. One-third of participants dropped out be-cause of problems caused by the niacin. An earlier clinical study was actually stopped when research-ers found there was no difference between the ni-acin and a placebo, and discovered they produced the same side effects. If you’ve been prescribed niacin to go along with your statins for heart-attack or stroke prevention, talk to your doctor about whether you should continue to use it. At the same time, don’t make any deci-sions on your own! Get medical advice before either starting or stopping therapeutic doses of niacin.

Understanding the Trustee’s Report Every year about this time, the Social Secu-rity and Medicare board of trustees release their an-nual report on the status of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds. And every year about this time, political hacks and pundits twist the data in those reports to serve their own agendas. I will use today’s column to help my readers understand the issues. It will be best to start with some background. I’m going to primarily stick to the Social Security trust fund report because this is, after all, a column about Social Security. There are two Social Security trust funds. One is the Old Age and Survivors Insur-ance fund. It is funded by a major portion of the Social Security payroll tax. Social Security retirement and survivor benefits are paid for out of the OASI fund. A much smaller portion of that tax is funneled into the Disability Insurance trust fund. And of course that fund is used to pay monthly Social Security disability benefits. I must point out here (for about the thou-sandth time in this column) that the DI trust fund is NOT used to pay for Supplemental Security In-come disability benefits. Almost everyone confuses SSI disability with Social Security disability. They are two entirely separate government programs. SSI benefits are paid for out of the general funds of the government, NOT out of Social Security trust funds. Both the Social Security and Medicare trust funds are made up exclusively of U.S. government treasury bonds. The way Social Security and Medicare are financed has led to many arguments over the years in this column. I don’t have the time or space to get into those issues today. Anyone who wants to learn more about the funds and how they work can go to the actuarial portion of the websites of the oversight agencies. You can find Social Security actuarial data at www.socialsecurirty.gov. Social Security is man-aged by the Social Security Administration. And you can find Medicare actuarial data at www.cms.gov. CMS stands for the Centers for Medicare and Med-icaid Services, the agency that runs the Medicare program. The law requires that the Social Security and Medicare trust funds be overseen by a six-member board of trustees. Four serve by virtue of their posi-tions within the federal government: the secretary of the treasury; the commissioner of social security; the secretary of health and human services; and the secretary of labor. There are also two public trust-ees who are appointed by the president for six year terms. And although some pundits try to label the trust fund reports as little more than propaganda spun by political hacks (the aforementioned digni-taries acting on behalf of the Administration), the reports are actually generated by boring old bean counters -- Social Security and Medicare actuaries. And I mean that in the best sense of the term. I used

to work right down the hall from SSA’s actuaries, and these folks are dedicated public servants who do a superb job of analyzing data and presenting the country with the facts about the status of the funds and projections for the future of the funds. They are not at all influenced by the political party in power at the time. For proof, all you have to do is look at past reports issued when conservative Republicans sat in the White House and when liberal Democrats sat in the White House. The reports are always es-sentially the same, simply updated annually based on economic variables. This year’s report shows essentially no change in the projections for the Social Security funds from last year. The combined OASI and DI trust funds will keep the system solvent through 2033. But a more important date is 2020. That is the date when the system will begin to pay out more in benefits than it collects in taxes. That means the system will have to begin redeeming large chunks of its reserve funds to keep the checks going out each month. And since those reserve funds are entirely government IOUs, guess who would have to cough up more money to keep the system in the black? (The answer is all of us.) As I’ve pointed out many times in this col-umn, we will never reach that crisis point. There will be major reforms to Social Security before 2020. My best guess as to reforms: a long range increase in the retirement age; a possible cut in COLAs; and a slight increase in the payroll tax or wage base). And those reforms will keep us from ever reaching those trust fund crunch points. I know there are many skeptics out there who think Congress will never get its act together to reform Social Security. But all they have to do is look at history. The last time major reforms were enacted, in the early 1980s, we were only five years away from the Social Security doomsday clock. So we’ve still got some wiggle room before things get desperate and Congress is finally forced to act. A more urgent issue is if you consider the disability trust fund on its own. By itself, the DI fund is scheduled to be depleted in just two short years -- by 2016. (Disability claims are on a rather alarm-ing rise because of the large number of aging baby boomers whose bodies are breaking down before they hit their retirement years.) We’ve been down this road before too (for different reasons). The last time the disability fund was near insolvency, they simply borrowed money from the OASI fund. Of course, today that would be like robbing a poverty-stricken Peter to pay an almost destitute Paul. What

Congress should do is enact a very slight increase in the Social Security payroll tax to be earmarked for the disability fund. But they won’t. At least, not any time soon -- because no one wants to increase any-one’s tax. So once again, in the next year or two, we will see another short term borrowing binge (from OASI to DI), which of course will just exacerbate the retirement trust fund shortfall .

M.D.

Heart Risk: Like Father, Like Son DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 69. Two years ago, I had a heart attack followed by double bypass surgery; two vessels on the back of my heart were blocked. I had no symptoms. My doctor, family, friends and I were stunned. I was too healthy to have been struck by a heart attack. I was at risk due to my male family members having heart issues. My father died of his third heart attack at age 60. I followed a heart-healthy lifestyle: low body fat, healthy weight, no smoking, no drinking, no red meat, lots of exercise indoors and out. My choles-terol readings had always been in the good range. I am now on simvastatin and losartan daily. I regularly take my blood pressure read-ings. Since my heart attack and my surgery, I have followed the therapy lifestyle diet in an American Heart Association publication. A year after my heart attack and surgery, I had a treadmill stress test, and all was well. I see my cardiologist every six months and my primary doctor quarterly. What preys on my mind the most is

whether or not plaque is building up in any of my blood vessels, leading to a killer heart at-tack. I wish there was a noninvasive means to at least annually determine the health of my blood vessels. I do not want to wait for symp-toms to occur. I want early detection to prevent another heart attack. -- M.S.

ANSWER: Your letter underscores that heart disease can happen even when you do ev-erything right, that a family history is a significant risk factor, and that heart attacks happen even in people with good blood cholesterol. Your question is about a screening test for heart disease, to see whether there are blockages that need treatment before any symptoms devel-op. There are two kinds of tests: those that look at the anatomy of the heart, such as an angiogram or CT angiogram, and those that look at its function, such as a stress test. The problem with pictures of the blood vessels is that it’s likely you have some blockages. However, small blockages actually may be more likely to cause a heart attack than big ones, since the smaller ones can rupture and cause a blood clot, which starts the heart attack. A stress test, such as the treadmill ECHO you did, is better at showing if the heart is getting all the blood it needs

during exercise. My colleagues in cardiology and I recom-mend a good diet and exercise regimen, a statin, blood pressure treatment such as what you are getting, daily low-dose aspirin and a periodic stress test. An angiogram would be considered with any new symptoms. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they are avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and ad-dress. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

● On Aug. 16, 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman is struck in the temple by a ball pitched by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. He died 12 hours later. After Chapman’s injury, it was man-dated that scuffed or discolored balls be replaced with new white ones, making them easier to see.

● On Aug. 17, 1933, New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,308th consecutive game, breaking for-mer Yankee Everett Scott’s record for con-secutive games played. Gehrig would go on to play in 2,130 games in a row, setting a record that would stand for over half a century.

● On Aug. 13, 1948, U.S. and British planes airlift a record amount of supplies into sections of Berlin under American and British control. Despite terrible weather, crowded airspace and exhaustion of the pilots and crews, more than 700 British and American planes brought in nearly 5,000 tons of supplies.

● On Aug. 12, 1953, less than a year after the United States tested its first hydrogen bomb, the Soviets detonate a 400-kiloton device in Kazakhstan. Known as the “Lay-er Cake,” the bomb was fueled by layers of uranium and lithium deuteride, a hydrogen isotope.

● On Aug. 15, 1969, the Woodstock Mu-sic Festival opens on a patch of farmland in White Lake, New York. By the time the gates opened, more than 400,000 people were clamoring to get in. Those without tickets simply walked through gaps in the fences, and the organizers were eventual-ly forced to make the event free of charge.

● On Aug. 11, 1973, “American Graffiti,” a nostalgic coming-of-age tale steeped in the car-centric culture of suburban Califor-nia, is released in theaters. The film went on to become a sleeper hit.

● On Aug. 14, 1985, Michael Jackson purchases the publishing rights to the vast majority of the Beatles’ catalog for $47 mil-lion, outbidding even Paul McCartney. In later years, the catalog -- now estimated to be worth in excess of $1 billion -- allowed Jackson to remain solvent by serving as collateral for several enormous personal loans.

911 Ambulance Calls Can Cost as Much as a Cruise! Q: A few of us at our clubhouse got into a discussion about what happens when some-one calls 911 for help. One of them asked how much ambulance service costs, which raised our curiosity since we all could face that situa-tion some day. Can you shed any light on this? We agreed that it’s probably expensive.

A: Emergency 911 calls should only be made when a true emergency occurs, and in those cases people generally don’t think about cost when they are in desperate need of help. A medical emer-gency is considered a serious situation where medi-cal help is needed immediatly. When a medical 911 call is received the dis-patcher will try to evaluate the seriousness of the situation, and then send emergency help accord-ingly. Depending upon the municipality, ambulance services can be managed by the fire department, a hospital, private companies or by city government. Although ambulance service is not cheap, you can generally be assured of a speedy trip to the hospital while receiving immediate paramedic atten-tion enroute, and being attended to by an ER doctor the moment you arrive. If you are taken there by your spouse or oth-er private transportion it can mean delays in traffic, and then having to check in and register with a front desk nurse at the ER. Depending upon your condi-tion and how many are ahead of you, it can be a wait of up to several hours before it’s your turn to be ad-mitted to an exam room for a doctor to see you. Ambulance costs vary widely depending on the service required, equipment used, time involved, distance traveled, insurance coverage, and many oth-er factors. The cost can vary from several hundred to upwards of several thousand dollars, depending on all of those factors. Insurance providers also reserve the right to determine if the claim qualifies as a “true emergency” that was actually necessary. I recommend not opting for the ambulance unless it’s truly a life-threatening situation. But if it is, make that call and worry about the cost later! * * *

Q: We retired last January and have decided to sell our home and downsize to a senior community. We need to rid ourselves of our excess stuff (junk) that’s accumulated in our house and garage for 37 years. A lot of it belongs to our adult kids and their families, but they aren’t too eager to help us get rid of it. What’s the best way to handle this?

A: No doubt you have discussed your plans with your family, and even if they aren’t as happy as you are about your moving and lightening your load, you’re still the parents -- and parents rule! The best way to get this done is to schedule dates for their help, and then stand by them. Mark those dates on your calendar, and circle with a great big “X” the date you’ll be out of there and in your new home. Make sure everyone knows that sched-ule is firm and that you’re sticking to it. We all value our treasures because of the memories they hold, but resist the temptation to keep hanging on to them. Start by choosing what is really worth keeping and slash away at the rest. Decide what things need to be returned to your kids, sold, donated to charity, or simply trashed. If the kids complain that they don’t have room for the stuff that belongs to them, they will have to decide what’s to be done with it. You’ve been providing them with free storage long enough, so just move forward with your plans -- it’s no longer your problem! When the walking doll walked, her head moved. Home waves were popular in the mid-20th century. They could be purchased at grocery stores and drugstores for about $2. A professional perm ran about $15 in those days. During hard times, a fru-gal consumer could save about $13. A refill was even sold for $1. Toni competitors were Lift Waves and Rayve. Gillette Safety Razor Company eventually bought the Toni Company sometime in the 1940s. Toni perms are still being made. Circa 1953 Toni dolls are selling online in the range of $75 to $150 each. * * *

Q: This mark is on the back of an oval glass plaque that is a family treasured heirloom. It has been handed down through four genera-tions and is in perfect condition. It is decorated with hand-painted flowers against a white back-ground. The overall measurements are 9 by 13 inches, which includes the metal frame. Could you please provide some informa-tion on its history and value?

A: Wave Crest glass was made by C.F. Monroe Company located in Meriden, Connecticut. It was in business from 1898 to around World War I. Wave Crest is opaque blown-molded glass. Blanks were purchased from the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company located in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Monroe Company designers decorated the blanks using the names “Wave Crest,” “Kelva” and “Naka-ra.”

Toni Dolls Make Waves With Collectors Q: Enclosed you will find a photo of a pair of Toni dolls. They were given to me when I was about 8 years old, and I am now 69. Toni was a home perm product, and the dolls were a promotion for the perms. If you saved box tops, you could send for the dolls. A set of little roll-ers and permanent wave solution came with the dolls so you could actually curl their hair. The dolls are in their original dresses and in excel-lent condition. Please let me know if they are worth anything.

A: Toni Home Wave Company was one of the leading home permanent wave manufactures in the 1940s. They introduced the dolls in 1949, and they were available until 1953. Toni dolls were made by the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company. Each doll was accompanied by accessories that included little roll-ers, “play permanent wave solution,” combs, brush-es and instructions. The dolls were available in both blond and brunette nylon hair, they had sleepy eyes

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson

Ball position is key Proper ball position is key for solid contact and it is critical to check it often. It can be very com-mon for the ball to creep up too far in the stance. When this happens, solid contact will suffer and the first thing most amateurs as-sume is there is something wrong with their golf swing. Before altering your swing, check your ball position. If the ball has crept forward, move it back a bit. You’ll find that you are able to better “attack” the ball with more of a descending blow. Con-tact is crisper as well. You can practice proper ball position on the driving range by placing a club on the ground with the grip end pointing to the proper ball position in your stance. By practicing proper ball position you will be better able to dupli-cate it when you are out on the golf course.

ENDANGERED SIGHTS & SOUNDS (cont’d):• How long has it been since you’ve used a

typewriter eraser? Or, if you’re younger, have you moved your belongings into a long-unused desk, only to find a strange-looking gadget with fiber-like hairs bushing out of one end? What you’ve found is a typewriter eraser. Usually shaped like a pencil, the tip was made of an especially-abrasive rubber, which was used to “erase” the typing error. The other end featured a small brush made of stiff plastic strands that was used to sweep the remnants of the erasure off the page.

• There’s no shortage of litter on the ground to-day, but thankfully, we no longer see discarded pull-tabs. The tabs on older easy-open beverage cans pulled completely off the can. People who walked in bare feet were constantly dodging these carelessly-dropped metal hazards.

• The rhythmic “beep” of the scanner is the musical accompaniment to the supermarket checkout line. But if you’ve ever wondered where the cliché of saying “ka-ching!” in re-lation to money comes from, that’s the sound that the old-style electric, not electronic, cash registers made. Cashiers of that era had to manually punch a series of buttons to ring up your purchase, followed by a smack of the “total” button with the heel of the hand.

• “Do you want your carbons?” used to be an automatic question asked by merchants after you’d signed for a credit card payment. At that time, credit card receipts were filled out by hand in triplicate, with a small piece of carbon paper inserted between each sheet. It didn’t take long for thieves to realize they could retrieve the used carbons from the trash and steal valuable credit card information. Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly of-fered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TIDBITS!

SCARY MOVIESby Ryan Toepfer

Some people just seem to love having the living daylights scared out of them. Why else would horror and suspense movies be so popular? To celebrate Halloween, Tidbits goes behind the scenes of some classic thrillers.• When Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film

rights for Psycho, he also bought up as many copies of the original novel as he could find, hoping to keep the story’s ending a secret.

• The famous shower scene of Psycho was filmed using a double for Norman Bates, as Anthony Perkins was appearing in a play (Greenwillow)in New York at the time. The first time Perkins actually saw that scene was back at the studio, watching the daily “rushes,” and he said he was just as scared as everyone else.

• Take a close look at Michael Myers’ mask in the 1978 camp classic Halloween. Does the face look familiar? The movie was filmed on such a tight budget, that the prop department had to make do with what they had. For Myers’ disguise, they used an old Captain Kirk (StarTrek) mask, which they spray painted white and then re-shaped the eyeholes.
