WED., JAN 5

(JUST EAST OF THE “PINK ELEPHANT” CAR WASH)

Among other activities at the school, he taught Ruth how to play the game of baseball, and it was soon evident that the boy clearly excelled at the sport. Ruth loved the game and took every opportunity he could to practice and sharpen his playing skills. In 1919, he had become good enough to be considered a professional level player, and at age 19, he signed with the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

• Being the youngest member of the ball club, his team members jokingly referred to him as “the Babe.” The nickname stuck after he was sold to the New York Yankees five years later in 1924. Ruth proved himself a valuable player as an outfielder and pitcher, and contributed to the team’s seven pennants and four World Series titles. Prior to his arrival, the Yankees had never won a single pennant.

• In 1927, Babe (a.k.a. the Bambino) became the first player to hit 60 homers in one season, a record that stood for 34 years until it was broken by the Yankees’ Roger Maris in 1961. Ruth’s record of 714 lifetime home runs was on the books for 41 years. He retired in 1935 at age 40 after 21 seasons. The Babe died as a baseball legend in 1948 after losing a battle with cancer.

• Hank Aaron was born February 5, 1934 in a depressed section of Mobile, Alabama, known as “Down the Bay.” He grew up in a poor

Babe Ruth, 1921

This week, Tidbits looks at two great home run hitters who entered the world during the month of February. Both went through difficult childhoods, but despite the odds against their success both went on to achieve record-setting fame. • A rough neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland,

known as “Pigtown” was the February 6, 1895 birthplace of George Herman Ruth Jr., who would later become known as “the Sultan of Swat.” Of the eight children in the poverty-stricken family, only George and one sister survived. His mother battled tuberculosis for many years, and his father earned only minimum wages as a common laborer.

• Unable to provide for his family, his father brought seven year old George to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys. The school was an orphanage/reformatory operated by the Xaverian Brothers, who were Jesuit missionaries. There, the senior Ruth signed over custody of his son, and for the next 12 years, the boy saw his family only on rare occasions. He learned the trade of tailoring and shirt making at the school, and played in the school band.

• St. Mary’s Head of Discipline, Brother Mathias Boutlier, took young Ruth under his wing.

held the office for two terms. Although Reagan ranks high in popularity as a U.S. President, he was actually defeated for the nomination in both 1968 and 1976, before finally winning in 1980. His administration is remembered for the end of the Cold War. When Reagan died in 2004 at the age of 93, he had been afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease for over ten years.

• Although we think of Gloria Vanderbilt as a jeans designer, she was first a painter, studying at the Art Students League of New York, and known for her oil paintings, watercolors and pastels. She also did artwork for Hallmark cards. She was born an heiress of the famous Vanderbilt railroad family, and, at the age of 15 months, inherited a half-share in a $5 million trust fund when her father died. It wasn’t until she was nearing 50 that she stepped into the fashion world, starting with a line of scarves. By the mid-1970s, her famous swan logo could be seen on clothing, perfume, leather goods and liqueurs. Vanderbilt is the mother of CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper, who is the great-great-great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cooper himself was a model for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren from age 10 to 13.

• If Christie Brinkley hadn’t moved to Paris to study art in 1973, she may never have been the cover girl on three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue editions and more than 500 other magazine covers. As she stood in a Paris post office she was “discovered” by an American photographer, Errol Sawyer, who took Brinkley’s first modeling pictures. Speaking of her discovery, Brinkley has said, “I was basically a surfer girl from California. I never looked like a model.” You’ve seen her photo on the cover of Vogue, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and Esquire, among others, as well Life magazine’s best-selling issue ever. She’s been the spokesperson for Chanel, Max Factor, Nissan, Revlon, Halston, Anheuser-Busch and many others. Among her free time interests, Brinkley is an avid hockey fan, with the New York Islanders as her favorite team.

• We’ve been listening to Don Pardo introduce Saturday Night Live’s “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” since the program premiered in 1975. Baby boomers may remember Pardo as the announcer on the original “Jeopardy!” game show with host Art Fleming from 1964 to 1975. rence Whitney, but you’ve probably heard his work. Better known as “Larry the Cable Guy,” this February 1963 baby got his start as a disc jockey at a Blue Springs, Missouri, radio station before advancing to the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. He’s often heard saying, “Git ‘er done,” and “I don’t care who ya are, that’s funny right there.” You’ll usually see “Larry” in his trademark “redneck” attire — jeans, sleeveless flannel shirt and camouflage hat. He named his daughter Reagan because in his words, “Ronald Reagan was the greatest president ever.”

• Speaking of Ronald Reagan, can you name this February baby’s first screen role? It was the 1937 film “Love Is on the Air.” Reagan had actually started his career “on the air” when the University of Iowa hired him in 1932 to broadcast the Hawkeyes’ football games at the rate of $10 per game. Reagan appeared in over 50 movies, but his most famous is probably 1940’s “Knute Rockne, All American.” He entered active military duty during World War II in 1942, but because of his nearsightedness was prohibited from going overseas. He became California’s 33rd governor in 1967 and

1. What famous company was founded by February 1955 baby Steve Jobs?2. Who was the author of the 1963 book entitled “The Feminine Mystique”?

In the Finnish language, February iscalled Helmikuu, which translates “month of the pearl.” This is because as the snow melts on trees, droplets are formed that freeze again, resembling pearls of ice. February is also the only month of the year when it is possible to not have a full moon.

STRANGE BUT TRUEBy Samantha Weaver

¥ It was beloved American comedian, ac-tor, producer and author Bill Cosby who of-fered the following advice to new parents: “Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell, the name will carry.” ¥ Those who study such things say that it takes one second to vacuum 1 square foot of floor. ¥ You probably don’t realize it -- and you certainly don’t notice it -- but experts claim that the Atlantic Ocean is getting about 1 centimeter bigger every year, and the Pacific Ocean is shrinking by the same amount. It’s due to continental drift, they say. ¥ If you’re planning a trip to central Africa, you can pay a visit to both the shortest people in the world (the Pygmy tribes) as well as the tallest (the Tutsi, also known as the Watusi). ¥ If you’re a blood donor, you help to make up a significant minority. In the United States, less than 5 percent of the popula-tion donates blood every year. ¥ It was Nobel Prize-winning Russian au-thor Boris Pasternak who wrote the novel (later adapted to film) “Doctor Zhivago.” It was originally published in 1957 in Italy, to great acclaim, but it wasn’t published in the Soviet Union until 1988. ¥ If you took all the Tootsie Rolls produced every year and placed them end to end, there would be enough candy to stretch to the moon and back. Interestingly, the Tootsie Roll isn’t actually considered to be chocolate -- not according to the definition used by federal officials supervising the candy industry, anyway. ¥ The world’s highest tides are found in the Bay of Fundy, located in Nova Scotia, Canada. There, the difference between high and low tides can be as much as 50 feet.***Thought for the Day: “I am free of all prej-udices. I hate everyone equally.” -- W.C. Fields

family and spent his childhood in poverty, picking cotton on an Alabama farm.

• Young Aaron loved the game of baseball and badly wanted to play, but his family had no money for baseball equipment. Using his ingenuity, he would fashion his own bats and balls out of materials that he could find on the streets and in garbage cans. He sharpened up his batting skills by practicing for hours hitting bottle caps with broom stick handles.

• He attended Central High School in Mobile as a freshman and a sophomore, where he played outfield and third base in varsity baseball. His skills on the field helped lead his team to the Mobile Negro High School Championship both of those years. During this time, he also excelled on the football field and received several scholarship offers to play college football. But he turned down those opportunities, choosing instead to pursue his first love -- baseball.

• A spot on a Negro League team, the Mobile Black Bears, came along in his junior year of high school, and Aaron was paid $10 per game, his first experience of being paid to play the game he loved.

• His minor league career started at age 17, when baseball scout Ed Scott signed him to a contract with the Indianapolis Clowns, part of the Negro American League.

• Three years later in 1954, he started his major league career, one that would span 23 seasons. By 1955, Aaron had already made his first All-Star team, a feat he would repeat 20 more times. He spent 21 seasons with the Braves (first Milwaukee, then Atlanta). His final two seasons were with the Milwaukee Brewers.

• In the final game of the 1973 season, “Hammerin’ Hank” tied Babe Ruth’s home run record of 714.

Hank Aaron

During the ensuing winter, he received death threats and hate mail from those who didn’t want to see the Babe’s record broken by a black man. On April 8, 1974, in a game between the Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Aaron reached that goal on a pitch from Al Downing. In October of that year, he hit his 733rd home run, which proved to be his last as a member of the Braves ball club. Within a month, the Braves traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers.

• During Aaron’s first season with the Brewers, he broke Babe Ruth’s all-time RBI record of 2,217. Aaron still holds the all-time record with 2,297 runs batted in. His final home run, No. 755, was achieved during his last season in July of 1976, a record that stayed in place until 2007, when Barry Bonds hit his 756th. ■

It was beloved British mystery nov-elist and playwright Agatha Christie who made the following sage observa-tion: “It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them.” ● Some toads can live for up to a year without eating a single thing. ● Those who study such things say that not all your fingernails grow at the same rate. It seems the nail on your middle fin-ger is a bit of an overachiever -- it grows faster than the nails on your other fin-gers. ● Lawmakers in Corpus Christi, Texas, evidently once found home alligator farming to be enough of a problem that they felt compelled to pass a law mak-ing it illegal to raise the crocodilians in a home. ● If you buy a postage stamp in Israel, rest assured that the glue you’ll be lick-ing on said stamp is kosher. ● If you (like me) are a fan of Krispy Kreme’s donuts, you may be interest-ed to learn that the pastries have been made with dough from the same secret recipe since 1937. ● During the first couple of years of life, dolphins gain an average of five pounds every month. ● Despite the fact that famed magician Harry Houdini exposed a number of me-diums and psychics as frauds, Sherlock Holmes novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle persisted in believing that Houdini him-self was a medium. ● The subcontinent of India is steadily moving closer to the continent of Asia -- by about 2 inches every year. *** Thought for the Day: “Give all power to the many, and they will oppress the few. Give all power to the few, and they will oppress the many. Both therefore ought to have power, that each may de-fend itself against the other.” -- Alexander Hamilton

We all know that hearts are synonymous with Valentine’s Day. This week, Tidbits studies up on the human heart, the vital muscle that “takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’!” • Just a little larger than the size of your fist, your

heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces. The average heart beats about 72 times per minute, which is over 100,000 times a day. If you do the math, that’s 3.6 million times every year. If you live 70 years, that’s 2.5 billion beats over the course of your lifetime.

• Every day your heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood through your body’s 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Turn on your kitchen faucet full blast for the next 45 years and that will equal the amount of blood pumped by your heart during

your lifetime. That’s about 1.5 million gallons, which would fill about 200 tanker cars on a freight train.

• About four weeks after conception, the heart of a fetus starts beating. Its heart rate is about 150 beats per minute, twice as fast as an adult’s. At 12 weeks, its heart is pumping 60 pints of blood every day.

• The heart cavity is made up of four parts, two upper chambers and two lower chambers. The upper compartments are called the right and left atria; the lower chambers are the right and left ventricles. The body’s largest artery, the aorta, originates from the left ventricle, the largest and strongest chamber that pumps to all body parts. Its walls are about one half inch thick. Your body contains about 75 trillion cells that receive blood from the heart. Only one body part, the cornea, receives no blood.

• The word “cardiac” means “related to the heart,” and has its origins in the Greek word for heart, kardia.

• There is a difference between the hearts of men and women. The man’s is typically about 2 ounces heavier, but beats about eight fewer times per minute.

• The world’s first successful human heart transplant was completed in 1967 by South African physician Dr. Christiaan Barnard. The recipient Louis Washansky lived 18 days. Since the introduction of new technology and medical techniques, heart recipients today live an average of 15 years. About 3,500 transplants are performed every year. After two years, about 80 percent of recipients are alive, and after five years, 73 percent of males and 67 percent of females still survive. Medical research has shown that same-gender transplants have better results.

• The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant

recipient lived 31 years after his surgery. Tony Huesman was 20 years old when viral pneumonia damaged his heart and he received a new one in 1978. He lived until 2009, when ironically, it was cancer, not a heart problem, that claimed his life. Kelly Perkins received her new heart in 1995 and has since climbed Mt. Fuji, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn, Mt. Whitney and Argentina’s Cajon de Arenales!

• When you have a good belly laugh, up to 20 percent more blood is pumped throughout your entire body, which can contribute significantly to stress reduction. As the Bible declares in Proverbs 17:22, “A merry heart doeth good, like a medicine.” So laugh it up and stay healthy! ■

3. The weekly “Brain Breaker”

Created by Tom Underwoodwww.wuzzleking.com ©North America Syndicate, 2010

Q: I was thrilled to see that Luke Perry and Jason Priestley were working together again in the Hallmark Channel movie “Goodnight for Justice.” How did that opportunity come about for them to get together? Do they have anything to say about who they would like to work with?-- Gina H., via e-mail

A: I spoke with Luke recently, and he gave me the scoop on how it all went down: “I like working with Jason a lot. There is a company involved in making this movie called Entertainment One. They work here in the United States, but they are based in Canada. So, if you are in business with them you have to do your stuff in Canada, which means you have to have a Canadian director. And when they said Canadian, I thought, ‘I’ve got one of those.’ That was easy enough, and it was the right way to go because he’s a smart direc-tor. It was great working with him on this.” ***

Q: Do you know if Donald Trump is go-ing to film another “The Celebrity Apprentice”? I like the original “Apprentice” just fine, but in my opinion the celebrity version is always so much more fun! I hope you have the inside track on this -- Tiffany T., Atlanta

A: You can bet The Donald knows a good thing when he sees it. Another round of celebs have been rounded up for this next installment of the competi-tion, which crowned Bret Michaels as its winner last year. This time around, the participants are: David Cassidy, NeNe Leakes, LaToya Jackson, Lisa Rinna, Dionne Warwick, Gary Busey, Jose Canseco, origi-nal “Survivor” winner Richard Hatch, Lil Jon, Meat Loaf, Mark McGrath, John Rich, Hope Dworaczyk, Star Jones, Marlee Matlin and Niki Taylor. ***

Q: I am curious to know what you think about Ricky Gervais’ hosting of the Golden Globes? Some people I’ve talked to about this seem to think he was too mean, but in my hon-est opinion, I thought he was spot on. -- Eric P., St. Louis

A: I agree with you, Eric. Either the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not give out enough booze to loosen up the celebs, or some of them are feeling a bit too self-important these days. As we learned last year, Ricky’s style of hosting is roast-like, which is a style of comedy most Americans love -- as long as they are not the intended target. Instead of people like Bruce Willis, Tim Allen and Tom Hanks getting their shorts in a bunch about Ricky’s jokes, it would have been funnier -- and would have made it all less awkward -- if they would have just played along instead of pompously butting heads. ***

Q: One of my favorite shows was “Six Feet Under.” I know Peter Krause is in “Parent-hood” and Michael C. Hall is the star of “Dex-ter,” but what is Lauren Ambrose, who played Claire, up to lately? -- David F., via e-mail

A: The beautiful redhead just joined the cast of “Torchwood,” which is set to premiere its fourth

Luke Perry

season July 1 on Starz. According to Entertainment Weekly, Lauren, 32, will play a heartless public-rela-tions guru named Jilly Kitzinger for 10 episodes.

How To Have a Killer Garage Sale Whether your goal is to purge your home of stuff you no longer need or to raise some cash (or both), you have options. You could sell your items on an auction website, list them in the classifieds or just give the stuff away. Or you could host a killer garage sale that turns your castoffs into cold hard cash by following these steps: Plan ahead. Give yourself more than a few weeks to get ready. Make sure the date you select is not conflicting with a holiday or a community event. Choose the day or days of the week when garage sales are typically held in your area. Check local laws regarding signage, restrictions and whether or not local laws require a permit. Get organized. It pays to put your stuff in order. Designate your sale area. Take the time to repair and clean your sale items -- and your sale area, too. Dirt, grime and clutter repel shoppers. A nicely ordered space draws ready, willing and able buyers. Pricing. Your goal is to get rid of your stuff while making some money. Research the prices of similar items on eBay and Craigslist. For high-ticket

items priced at more than $100, make sure you include manuals, warranties and other information that would be beneficial to the buyer. Allow plenty of time in advance of your sale just for writing your prices on stickers. This is more of a time-consum-ing process than you may think. Advertise. At the very least, put a sign at the end of your street, and better yet on all the major thoroughfares closest to your home. Make the sign and the letters large enough to be read from a moving vehicle. An arrow showing which way they should go is helpful to people unfamiliar with your neighborhood. But if you really want to attract motivated buyers, get serious with the advertising. Consider an ad in the classified pages of your local newspaper and list some of the categories of items you are selling. Include the dates and hours of your sale. Post on bulletin boards, and circulate fliers. You want your ad to stand out. Setting up. Organize your layout displays by grouping things in sections. For example, put all kitchen items together in one area and toys and games in another. Make sure all of your clothes are hung. Rig up a makeshift hanging clothes rack with two ladders or a pipe hanging from the ceiling. Never pile clothes on a table or in boxes. Point of purchase. The place where you will collect money is also a great place to sell cookies, coffee, snacks and drinks. If you have small items -- e.g., toys or jewelry -- that don’t go with anything else, divvy them up into small lunch bags. Then seal them, and mark them as “Grab Bags!” Priced reasonably and placed right by the checkout, they will fly off the table. Get help. Always have a friend or neighbor assist with your sale. You should always have at

least one other person to cover the cash box while the other is distracted with a customer or takes a powder room break. If you really want to knock your sale out of the park, turn to the professionals for expert advice. I recommend the e-book “Have a Killer Garage Sale,” by Paul and Marissa Osborne. You’ll learn how to advertise and create and locate signs to make your sale a smashing success. Go to http://HaveAKillerGarageSale.com to get this downloadable book. Use coupon code “MARY” at checkout to get $5 off the regular price of $14.95. If you rather would pay by check, send $9.95 and your e-mail address to: Have a Killer Garage Sale, c/o Osborne 6773 Township Road 55 Alger, OH 45812. Once your payment clears, Paul and Marissa will send the e-book to you via e-mail. One final note: When your sale is over, do not neglect removing all the signs you’ve placed around the neighborhood. Some communities even have laws enforcing this. Nothing is more aggravating to garage sale hunters than to be led on a wild goose chase for a sale that doesn’t exist!

Mooch Mooch, a 10-year-old brindle mixed breed, has spent the past eight years living large on the Sierra View golf course in Roseville, Calif. She trees squir-rels, rolls in the sand traps, chases geese, naps in the grass and avails herself of goodies from the clubhouse kitchen and the on-course snack shack, where she’s always welcome. In fact, she’s more than welcome. Over the years, Mooch made herself a fixture at Sierra View, her presence on the fairways as expected as the sun ris-ing in the east. But that all changed last summer, when Mooch sunk her teeth into the pants of a 13-year-old boy. The Sacramento Bee reported that it was “her first overtly aggressive act since her 2003 arrival.” The key word being “overt.” Mooch lived her first two years on the course avoiding all human interaction. Eventually, the ever-present offering of treats lured her closer, but never with the carefree, tail-wagging approach of a well-so-cialized dog. Rather, by all accounts, Mooch’s behav-ior is typical of a feral dog -- mistrustful, aloof, with a clear indifference to humans. But playing “hard to get” worked. Mooch has a fan in just about every member of Sierra View, in-cluding John Relja, who told the Bee, “Just because she’s not all licky and tailwaggy doesn’t mean she isn’t lovable.” And the incident last summer has done little to change hearts or minds when it comes to Mooch -- with nine exceptions. Sierra View’s nine-member board voted to re-locate Mooch a few months ago, with one member saying, “It’s not in the best interest of the club to have a dog with a little bit of history running loose on the property.” And so Mooch went to live with a Sierra View member who offered to take her after rescue orga-nizations hesitated because of her history. But about a month ago, after vanishing from the member’s home, Mooch reappeared at Sierra View, where she immediately relaxed into her old routine and where she remains at least for now. While Mooch’s return is cheered by most of the club’s members, the Sierra View board is still searching for a solution to the problem sparked last summer. People weighing in on this story have strong opin-ions, mostly in favor of letting Mooch be Mooch and banning the 13-year-old from the club. The board

will likely stick to its guns and insist on relocation. And perhaps there is a rescue group or sanctuary out there that will take Mooch in and give her a good home. One suggestion I haven’t seen, though, is train-ing. A professional board-and-train facility could do wonders for Mooch. This environment would afford her the opportunity to be handled by many different people and to be exposed to many other dogs, thus improving her social skills, as well as receiving pro-fessional obedience and behavior training. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s certainly worth pur-suing if Mooch, by popular demand, is back to stay. Woof!

Walking at a Good Clip Proves to be Healthful In 2011, the first wave of baby boomers will receive their Medicare cards and the impact on the health care system will be enormous. While the sheer number of patients visiting phy-sicians, clinics and hospitals will certainly increase, the greater challenge to American health care will be the incidence of dependency that often occurs as adults reach the age of 75 and beyond. Statistics indicate that 50 percent of adults over age 85 will be dependent on others to meet basic needs and will be unable to live on their own. To save the American health system, preventing dependency should be our No. 1 priority. Published in Journal of the American Medical Association, a recent study seems to show that the faster you walk, the more independent you may be and the longer you will live. Researchers examined the effect of gait speed on survival in 34,485 community-dwelling people over the age of 65. These people were followed for periods ranging from six to 21 years, and the aver-age gait speed was approximately one meter per second. Data clearly showed that gait speed was a very powerful predictor of death. Men age 75 with the lowest gait speeds were only 19 percent likely to be alive 10 years later, compared to 87 percent of men with the fastest gait speeds. For women of the same age, survival 10 years later was 35 percent for those with the lowest gait speed, compared to 91 percent of those with the highest gait speeds. Most interestingly, many of these patients were in their late 60s and early 70s when the study start-ed. Even at a younger age, gait speed remained a powerful predictor of life expectancy, as well as the number of serious chronic illnesses, high blood pressure, heart disease, history of smoking, the presence of obesity and history of hospitalization. Unfortunately, many older adults will have dif-ficulty adhering to the prescription of walking faster. What makes older people walk so slowly? A re-duced gait can occur due to neurological problems, such as strokes, Parkinson’s disease or nerve dam-age caused by back problems. In addition, chronic pain caused by back and joint disease, osteoarthri-tis and osteoporosis can slow a body down.

Aging is characterized by declines in muscle mass that lead to weakness. In combination with chronic illnesses, this weakness can mean many older adults are increasingly sedentary. Sadly, the more sedentary you are, the weaker you become -- and the greater the risk of aggravating chronic problems that affect gait and balance. This launch-es a nasty cycle that can result in total physical dependence. Overweight older adults are particu-larly prone to having a very slow gait and being sedentary. The answer is simple: everyone must make a commitment to exercise, walking in particular. There is evidence that walking at as brisk a pace as possible for an average of 30 minutes a day pro-motes health, reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and definitely improves gait speed. Just as important is daily stretching, activities that promote better balance, and exercising with weights to improve muscle mass and strength. Having stron-ger muscles improves gait and balance, prevents osteoporosis and maintains joint and back stability. But remember, how active you can be is often determined by the illnesses that afflict us in late life. After the age of 60, commit to having annual physicals to identify and prevent common illnesses. It is not too late to lower cholesterol, aggressively treat high blood pressure, and have regular screen-ings to identify cancers that become more common as we age. Also as you age, nothing is more important than eating foods that promote health, prevent disease and lower the risk of illness. In a recent study pub-lished in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers showed that following a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables, olive oil, fish, whole grains and moderate wine consumption not only reduces the risk of heart disease and certain cancers, but it also decreases the risk of memory loss and pro-longs life. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the message is clear: Commit to health with more ex-ercise, a balanced diet and regular medical check-ups. Take some time for a (fast) walk today! It will certainly pay off tomorrow.

Social Security From a Bigamist Q: I only recently learned that I was mar-ried to a bigamist! I thought I just had a regular ex-husband. But now I’m not sure I ever had a husband at all! We were “married” for 15 years before getting a divorce several years ago. He recently died. And after that happened, I learned that he was married to two other wom-en at the same time that he was married to me! Or to clarify that, he married the first woman and then left her, but he never divorced her. Then he married the second woman and left her, but he never divorced her, then married me. He told me that he was single when we got married and, of course, I never doubted it. Am Now I want to know if I’m going to be eligible for any of his Social Security?

A: I believe there is a pretty good chance that you will qualify for divorced widow’s benefits (as-suming you meet all the other eligibility require-ments). The Social Security Administration normal-ly follows state laws when it comes to marriage. In other words, if the state you were living in with Mr. Wonderful considers your marriage to be legal, SSA will consider it legal and pay you benefits on his re-cord accordingly. But even if there are some issues with the state recognizing the legitimacy of your marriage, there are other provisions in Social Security law that may help you. In a nutshell, those rules say that if you entered into the marriage in “good faith” -- in other words, if you married the guy truly believing that

he was single and not already married to someone else -- they could consider you legally married for So-cial Security purposes and pay you divorced widow’s benefits. By the way, there is a chance some of his other wives -- or I suppose I should say “victims” -- may also qualify for Social Security benefits on his record. But even if they do, you each would receive full benefits (i.e., you don’t offset one another). * * *

Q: In a recent column, you said that once you had 10 years of work, there was no point to working anymore for Social Security pur-poses. But I thought Social Security benefits were based on the highest 35 years of work and earnings. So wouldn’t it make sense for a per-son to work and pay Social Security taxes for at least 35 years?

A: It certainly would make sense for a person to work at least 35 years. In fact, during their working lifetime, most people spend at least 40 or more years at jobs where they are probably paying into Social Security. I’m sorry I didn’t make myself clear in that prior column. I was talking about the basic qualification requirement for a Social Security benefit, not the amount of the benefit. Anyone qualifies for Social Se-curity retirement benefits once he or she has 40 So-cial Security “credits.” Because you generally earn four credits per year, that translates into 10 years of work. In other words, once you’ve worked for 10 years, you are potentially eligible for Social Security retire-ment payments. And to meet that basic qualification requirement, it doesn’t matter if you have 40 credits or 400 credits. If you have at least 40 credits, you’re locked into the system. But because the amount of your benefit is based on your highest 35 years of earnings, then obviously, the more years you work and the more money you make, the higher your Social Security benefit will be. So, it would make sense to work as many years as you can in order to keep building up the amount of your Social Security benefit. * * *

Q: If I retire at age 58 in 2011, how much am I messing up my eventual Social Se-curity benefit? In other words, I’m going to have several years of “zero” earnings just before I take my Social Security. That can’t be good!

A: You shouldn’t lose too much sleep over this. Your Social Security retirement benefit certainly won’t be as high as it could have been had you kept working right up to the time you reach 62 -- the ear-liest Social Security eligibility age. But it’s not go-ing to be dramatically less because of your early retirement. Your Social Security benefit is based on your average earnings over your highest 35 years of work. For most people, their “high 35” are the last 35 years of earnings. That means your Social Security benefit will be based on your average wage probably during the years 1976 through 2011. Had you kept working un-til age 62, your benefit would have been based on your average wage from 1980 through 2015. That former time period (1976-2011) probably re-sults in a lower average wage than the latter (1980-2015), which would translate into a lower Social Se-curity benefit. How much lower? It depends entirely on your past income or what it would have been for the years in question. But my hunch is you’ll end up with a Social Security check that’s maybe $100 less than it could have been had you kept working until age 62.

If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at [email protected]. To find out more about Tom Margenau and read features by other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com.

Antivert is another useful drug. So is scopolamine -- in its oral form, not in its patch form. I may have made vertigo sound like an easy di-agnosis and an easy treatment; it isn’t. Many other serious conditions have to be considered by the ex-amining doctor. The booklet on vertigo discusses this common malady in detail. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Dono-hue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My teenage daugh-ter twists and pulls her hair when she reads, watches TV or studies. She has two small bald patches on her scalp. I cannot get her to stop doing this. Is this normal? -- R.T.

ANSWER: It’s not normal, but it’s pretty com-mon. It’s trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAY-nee-uh). Some classify it as an obsessive compulsive disorder. The hair pulling quiets an inner anxiety. It’s almost an involuntary act. If you can’t get your daughter to stop, the family doctor can recommend a therapist for her. The thera-pist can explain to her why she does this and how she can curtail the urge. Sometimes, medicines are prescribed for a short period. She really does need attention. Constant hair pull-ing can damage the hair roots and lead to a perma-nent bald patch. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Guard Your Social Security Number Social Security numbers were first issued to identify those who were getting benefits. Now it’s become a national ID number, and far too many people have access to it. Theft of Social Security numbers is big busi-ness. With that little number, plus your name and address, thieves can steal your identity and take your money or run up debt in your name. At the very least, it can mean spending untold months, sometimes years, straightening out the mess when your credit report has errors. With that number, someone can get medical services in your name, and at your expense, or refinance your mortgage, take out an equity loan and take the profits. For those who’ve put together some sort of retirement nest egg, it can mean losing virtually everything you’ve worked for over the years and leave you with nothing. McAfee, a computer security company, put to-gether a list of the Top 10 places where our Social Security numbers are most likely to be stolen. Starting with the riskiest places, they are: Universities and colleges, banks and financial institutions, hospitals, state governments, local governments, federal governments, medical busi-nesses that provide equipment or billing services, nonprofit organizations, technology companies, medical insurance and medical offices. While it’s often necessary to give your Social Security number to get services, you can reduce your risk by being careful. Send for a free copy of your credit report every year to make sure it doesn’t have errors. Invest in a shredder, or share one with friends. Shred any mail (unless you need to file it away) that has your personal information on it. NEVER throw sensitive papers away with your trash, such as billing statements, banking or investment re-ports or any other documents that contain credit card numbers, PIN numbers or other information about you. Identity thieves make it their business to pick through garbage cans, recycling bins and city dumps looking for anything they can find about you and your financial and credit accounts. If you’re hunting for a job, don’t automatically put your Social Security number on the application form. Those applications usually end up in dump-sters behind the business and are a virtual smor-gasbord of information for identity thieves. Instead, wait until they have actually hired you, then provide the number to the appropriate person in Human Resources. Be alert, and be careful. You have a lot to lose! Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

As the World Spins DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please ex-plain vertigo? I fell asleep in a chair one eve-ning, and when I woke, I was slightly dizzy. The next morning when I woke up and sat up, I was extremely dizzy. Everything was going back and forth. When I tried to walk, I was bouncing off the walls. The room was moving. My doctor prescribed Dramamine. I still wake up dizzy, but not as bad as the first two nights. I am 69. -- E.B.

ANSWER: Vertigo is a hallucination that every-thing is moving when it is not. What you describe fits the definition. Many causes of vertigo can be traced to the inner ear, which has two important functions: hearing and balance, and the orientation of our body to the things around it. That function is handled by the vestibular system of the inner ear. Sometimes a viral infection of the ear can trigger vertigo. The only way to handle it is to take a medi-cine such as you’re taking and wait for the infection to clear in about three to six weeks. Or it can come about because tiny calcium par-ticles in the inner ear have made their way to places where they shouldn’t be. This is benign positional vertigo. When affected people move their head or change position from lying or sitting to standing, the

Happy Anniversary on Valentine’s Day Q: This Valentine’s Day, my wonderful wife and I will have been married for 50 hap-py years. We are comfortable and aging pretty well, except for my wife’s occasionally falling. Fortunately, our family lives nearby and is able to assist whenever we need help. What might you recommend as an appro-priate way to celebrate this special occasion? I would like to make this an event that will be memorable for everyone in our family.

A: Would it be appropriate to do a surprise rep-etition of your original church vows? If so, arrange for one of your children to help you surprise mom with a special celebration at their home. Duplicate the wedding flowers if possible. Provide disposable cameras and ask guests to take photos for an album. Copy the old TV series titled “This is Your Life.” Choose a sibling to be the interviewer. Assign a fam-ily member as the video camera expert. Ask family, friends and others to talk about the special moments and laughable times. A few personal items to surprise your wife could include adding five small diamonds to her wedding ring, purchasing her favorite colored rose, planting it in your yard and naming it after her, writing and reading her a love poem, or buying her a battery-operated lighted cane for her safety. To be creative, give her a cashable coupon booklet, which includes gifts such as breakfast in bed, a dinner at her favor-ite restaurant, a gift card for new shoes and other thoughtful freebies. Family members could add oth-er coupons. Have a wonderful time!

Q: Our grandson plans to marry this June. We are pleased and believe he has made an excellent choice. However, in a bombshell an-nouncement at dinner last Saturday, the couple said they hoped we would not be disappointed, but they did not plan to raise children. As this is our only grandchild, our family was stunned by the announcement. They said they don’t be-lieve that they would make good parents be-cause they are both professionals: one a lawyer, the other a doctor. Because they are somewhat perfectionists and are dedicated to their career growth, they say that they cannot handle and fulfill the de-mands and needs of children. Do you believe there is a possibility of changing their minds?

A: Possibly. Partners in successful marriages need to be in agreement on important issues in their relations. Their decision has been made, and rather than getting into a discussion about having children later, they have chosen to alert you now of their com-

mitment. Even though you are not pleased by their decision, do not try to pressure them to change their minds. That would simply solidify and justify their decision. Be patient. At their ages, there are many unex-pected unknowns ahead, which may influence and cause them to change their priorities. A health fac-tor, a career disappointment, an accidental pregnan-cy, an aging parent responsibility and other events will affect future decisions. For example, some mili-tary couples now store their husband’s sperm for possible future insemination, if need be! Time and events change. As Pearl S. Buck is quoted: “A good marriage is one which allows for change and growth in the indi-viduals and the way they express their love.”

● On Feb. 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln is born in Hodgenville, Ky. As an adult, Lin-coln’s sense of humor may have helped him hide recurring bouts of depression. He admitted to friends and colleagues that he suffered from intense melancholia and hy-pochondria most of his adult life.

● On Feb. 10, 1846, Brigham Young leaves Nauvoo, Ill., and begins leading 1,600 Mor-mons west across the frozen Mississippi River to a temporary refuge at Sugar Grove, Iowa. It was their first stop in a westward migration that eventually brought them to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. By fall nearly 12,000 Mormons had made the trek.

● On Feb. 7, 1914, the silent film “Kid Auto Races at Venice” premieres in theaters, featuring actor Charlie Chaplin in his first screen appearance as the “Little Tramp.” Movies converted to sound in the late 1920s, but Chaplin held out until his film “Modern Times” (1936).

● On Feb. 13, 1945, a series of Allied fire-bombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the town to rub-ble and killing as many as 135,000 people. It was the most destructive bombing of the war. Little, if anything, was accomplished strategically, since the Germans were about to surrender.

● On Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles are intro-duced to America on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” singing “All My Lovin’,” “Til There Was You” and “She Loves You.” It is estimated that 73 million Americans watched the show.

● On Feb. 8, 1983, gunmen steal the champion Irish racehorse Shergar from a stud farm owned by the Aga Khan in County Kildare, Ireland. The 5-year-old thorough-bred stallion was worth $13.5 million. De-spite a highly publicized search by authori-ties, Shergar was never seen again and no ransom was paid.

● On Feb. 11, 1990, in a major upset, Bust-er Douglas defeats Mike Tyson, the undis-puted heavyweight champion of the world, in 10 rounds at a boxing match in Tokyo. The loss to Douglas was the beginning of a long, downward spiral for Tyson, which included jail time and boxing license revocation in Ne-vada.

Staffordshire Teapot Steeped in History Q: Enclosed is a photo of a clay teapot that has been in our family for a long time. Deco-rated with a fox hunting scene, it is cream col-ored with gold trim. The bottom of the pot says: “Sadler -- England” and “3491.” Can you tell me the history of my teapot and its age and value?

A: James Sadler founded his pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, in 1882. His first teapots were known as “Brown Betty.” They were made of red clay and finished with a dark brown glaze, thus the name. Sadler went into receivership in 2000, and the rights to the name and designs were purchased by Churchill China. The number “3491” refers to the de-sign number. Your teapot was made in the mid 20th-century and would probably be worth $25 to $35.

Q: I still have the book “The Torch is Passed,” which was published after President Kennedy’s assassination. It is “The Associated Press Story of the Death of a President.” The book includes both the events and photos that occurred from Nov. 22 to Nov. 25, 1963. It has been stored away for years, but it’s in excellent condition. Does it have any value?

A: Although John F. Kennedy memorabilia is collectible, the book is not expensive. Most copies are in the range of $15 to $25. * * *

Q: This mark is on the bottom of my old small vase. Decorated with pink roses and gold leaves all in relief, the vase stands about 5 inches tall. It is hand-painted, and the number “KW7283” is also included with the mark. What can you tell me about my vase?

A: George Zoltan Lefton Co., importers of dec-orative objects from Europe and Japan, used this mark. George Zoltan Lefton, a Hungarian immigrant, arrived in the United States in 1939. His love of fine porcelain inspired him to establish his company in

Your 2 Percent Windfall The amount you pay for Social Security will temporarily drop for 2011. In the past you and your employer have both paid 6.2 percent of your annual gross income into the Social Security fund. This year your portion goes down to 4.2 percent. Here’s how that looks in real numbers: ► If you make $30,000, your Social Security tax will fall from $1,860 to $1,260, thus saving you $600. That’s $50 per month. ► If you make $40,000, your Social Security tax will fall from $2,480 to $1,680, thus saving you $800. That’s $66 per month. ► If you make $50,000, your Social Security tax will fall from $3,100 to $2,100, thus saving you $1,000. That’s $83 per month. ► If you’re self-employed you have been paying 12.4 percent of your income to Social Security. For this year, that will drop to 10.4 percent. The government, one assumes, wants you to spend that extra money out in the marketplace to help the economy get back on its feet by creating other jobs. A better plan is to use it to help yourself. Here are a few things you can do with that (albeit small) amount of money: ● If you have credit-card debt, pick a card and increase your monthly payment by that amount, perhaps even rounding up to the next $10 incre-ment. ● Catch up on past due accounts that have been costing you extra in fees and interest. ● Add the extra as a principal payment on an ex-

The Future of Golf Instruction is MAT-T

The biggest challenge in learning the golf swing and its various components and sensations is that traditional golfinstruction is limited to the amount of feedback the studentreceives to experience the correct feelings of a particularswing. Golf instructors can share drills and feedback to theirstudents but many times the student doesn’t seem to latch on to the correct feelings and when they do, those feelingsseem to disappear without any explanation. Whether that isfrom shot to shot or from day to day. But new technology ismaking it clearer for the student to capture the sensations ofgreat swings.Motion Analysis Technology (MAT-T) is an extraordinary newtechnology that elevates swing analysis to an entirely newlevel and heightens the clarity of the student to feel the appropriate sensations of the swing.MAT-T gathers vital swing information and statistics usingmultiple high-speed cameras. MAT-T distills that informationto create a three-dimensional animated image of your swingthat is viewable from any angle with detailed data for greaterprecision in making adjustments for a better swing. Notice in the picture that the sensors on my body are collecting thedata to produce the image of my swing on the screen. Now, how does this relate to you and your swing? For all ofyou beginners out there, you can now feel what a good golfswing feels like at a much faster pace than if you were to justgo out and beat balls on the range. For all of you that have played golf before, you now can have exact digital statisticson what you are doing well when you are making your bestswings, no matter how good or bad you may think they are. Now we take that date and help you reproduce your verybest swings with more consistency as we make gradualadjustments to help you improve your way to better swingsand lower scores.

The future of golf instructionis MAT-T The biggest obstacle in learning the right feel in the golf swing is that traditional instruction is limited to the feedback the student gets from the instructor’s observations. Despite repetitive drills and practice, the student often can’t connect with the right “feel” needed in the swing, or at least how to maintain it on a day-to-day basis. But new technology is making it possible to cap-ture the feel of great swings. Motion Analysis Technology (MAT-T) is an extraordinary new system that elevates swing analysis to a new level that allows the student to feel, review and practice these sensations. Using strategically placed body sensors and high-speed three-dimensional cameras, MAT-T gathers vital swing information and replays it in animated images viewable from any angle. As shown in the photos, the equipment senses my every movement and displays it on the screen. This new techonology can prevent the beginner from developing bad habits, and allow seasoned players to develop maximum effectiveness in their swing. Better than simply beating balls out on the range, you can now have digital statistics showing exactly what you’re doing well in your best swings, and then work on reproducing them for precision and consistency - and lower scores.

doctor to film legend Greta Garbo. Although Eva appeared nearly 30 movies, she’s best known for her portrayal of Lisa Douglas, the ditzy blonde wife on the six seasons of the 1960s sitcom “Green Acres.” Zsa Zsa was Miss Hungary, 1936 and emigrated to the States five years later, where she had 40 film roles and scores of television appearances over the years. Neither sister was a stranger to marriage — Zsa Zsa had nine husbands, while Eva was married five times.

• Nearly everyone has seen the stunning black-and-white photographs of Yosemite National Park snapped by Ansel Adams. Adams very nearly didn’t become the famous photographer we’re all familiar with, since his ambition as a child and young adult was to become a concert pianist. Gifted with a photographic memory, reading music and playing the piano came easily to the young Adams. However, at age 14 a family vacation to Yosemite dramatically changed the direction of his future. The gift of a Kodak Brownie camera, given to Ansel by his father for their trip, intrigued the young boy. After developing several rolls of film he shot to capture the magnificent sights in the Park, his love of photography was born. By age 20, his Yosemite prints had been published. In the span of his career he published stunning photos of every National Park in the United States. ■

isting loan, thereby shortening the life of that loan. ● If you habitually run up debt at Christmas, once that debt is paid off, put the extra money in a Christmas savings account at the bank. By the end of this year you’ll have enough to pay cash for all your purchases. Whatever you do, don’t take on new payments on the assumption that you’ll continue to have that increased amount in your pocket over the long haul.

NOTE: If you usually file early and itemize your deductions, the Internal Revenue Service doesn’t want your tax return yet. It’s not ready. The reason is that computers haven’t been programmed to accommodate a few new changes in laws. Aim for the second half of February. If you use computer software, be sure to get the latest updates.
