1. Minutes of the meeting held on September 9, 2016
The minutes of the meeting held on September 9, 2016 were
distributed electronically. The Dean referenced the list of
Dietrich School faculty elected to the search committee and the
minutes were moved, seconded, and approved.
2. Dean’s Report (Dean N. John Cooper)
The Dean announced that he will send an email to all voting
faculty regarding the proposed revision of general education
requirements later today. The revisions will be considered at a
called faculty meeting on Thursday, November 17th at 1:30 pm in
the Connolly Ballroom in Alumni Hall. The Dean’s email will
invite colleagues to send amendments to Associate Dean
Twyning, and the full agenda will be circulated ca November 7th
to give people time to prepare for discussion at the meeting on
November 17th. There has been extensive student engagement
with the revisions through participation on Undergraduate
Council, and certain students are ex officio members of the
faculty, and will be able to present amendments, speak and vote.
3. Report from Dietrich School Undergraduate Council
(Associate Dean John Twyning)
Associate Dean John Twyning reviewed a list of courses that
were approved to fulfill general education requirements by
Undergraduate Council.
He announced that the BRIDGES program earned one of two
2016 University Prize for Strategic, Inclusive and Diverse
Excellence (UPSIDE) Awards. The award acknowledges
programs that increase access to and full participation in all
aspects of the university by minorities, women and other
protected classes.
4. Report from Dietrich School Graduate Council
(Associate Dean Kathleen Blee)
The Dietrich School Graduate Council has not met since the last
meeting of the Dietrich School Council, but is engaged in
reviewing TA/TF training and practices in the Department of
Music.
Broader issues that Graduate Studies is working on include: new
ways to communicate the achievements of our graduate students,
including a rotating spotlight feature on the website; advanced
pedagogical training and certification for graduate students in the
Dietrich School; and working with graduate programs to ensure
that all comply with the commonwealth mandate that master’s
degrees require at least 30 credits.
5. Election of the Faculty Grants Committee (FGC)
Dean Cooper informed Council that the Faculty Grants
Committee (FGC) distributes two types of funding to winners of
the faculty grants competition held each year. The Committee,
instituted through actions of Council in the 1970s, is deliberately
weighted towards the Humanities to ensure support of proposals
less likely to have access to Federal grants and funds. It is the
responsibility of Council to elect the Committee, and the Dean
presented via paper ballot the final slate of candidates for the
Committee as provided by FGC Chair Eric Moe; he asked
Council to make their selections and leave them with Jennifer
Bates.
