Dear Mid-Towners,

It is with sadness that I share the news of

our friend, Jagdish Saxena’s demise. We

mourn his passing away and extend our

sincere regrets to his family. This has truly

been a season of loss for us at Rotary Club

of Bombay Mid-Town.

By contrast, what a pleasure it was

to get together recently for our habitual

lunch at the Taj! Apart from enjoying

one another’s company, we were quite

inspired by Yasmeen Premji’s reading

of her novel Days of Gold and Sepia.

Being an informative, insightful, and

entertaining story of Bombay, this book

will certainly be one of my standard gifts

for foreign visitors.

It was particularly pleasing to see the room

packed with equal numbers of guests and

members. Among these guests, there were

two potential candidates for membership,

which is an encouraging indication. Let’s

keep it up! Along those lines, allow me

to share some proposed guidelines for

recruiting new members, as drafted by

Sucharita Hegde. Having been reviewed

by the Board of Directors, I request your

comments and suggestions on these

guidelines:

What does the Club need right now?

At least 20-30 new members engaged in

diverse and interesting professions

of age, provided they are already familiar

with Rotary (perhaps from another

Rotary Club, who may want to switch to

our Club)

sectors and many more enterprising

people working in these fields. We

should target such sectors where we lack

representative members.

or even mentoring new

members when they join.

of how we can all pitch in.

I am part of the team associated with the new avatar of the Club’s monthly bulletin. Some might argue that I am biased, but I think we succeeded in achieving a fresh, new look and feel without compromising on the traditional focus on the Club’s wonderful projects and its several commendable members. I hope that

many will participate in the community spirit that this section hopes to generate by sending

in their feedback on a regular basis.

ADAPT is the acronym for ‘Able Disabled People Together.’

ADAPT was previously known as ‘Spastic Society of India’. ADAPT looks after and supports mentally and physically disabled children by helping them to co-ordinate their movements and learn to speak and express themselves properly. ADAPT is the brainchild of Mithu Alur who conceptualised and founded it in 1972.

RCBMT has been associated with ADAPT since Rotary Year 2009-2010. Pres James Brunner led a delegation of Mid-Towners to the NGO’s premises at Bandra on 18th October. The delegates

Mr Anil V Kamath is an honours graduate in commerce and a qualified chartered accountant. He is an alumnus of the Executive Program of Michigan Business School and also a member of the Chartered Management Institute UK, the Royal Society of Public Health UK and the All India Management Association.

Mr Kamath retired as the Managing Director of Wockhardt Hospitals Ltd over a year ago. He was previously associated with Unichem Labs Ltd and Blue Star Ltd as their Vice President and Executive Vice President respectively. He has had a long and illustrious career in business management for which he has received many awards and citations. He was founding member of the Disease Management Association of India and President

The delegates were taken around their large premises, where children with disability are well looked after, provided with different training programmes, including education up to graduate level. The delegates were deeply impressed by the activities of ADAPT, some of which are:

He is on the Executive Council of the Forum of Free Enterprise and in now the Vice President of the Council for Fair Business Practices, Mumbai. He is also on the finance and healthcare committees of FICCI and Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industries in Mumbai.

In order to share his years of experience and expertise with the industry, Mr Kamath also trains and mentors students, teachers and senior executives. He was on the faculty of HR College of Commerce for over eight years, of which he is an alumnus. He is currently the Founder Chairman of Esemcee Advisors which provides strategic consulting services to organisations in India and abroad.

A lesser known aspect of Mr Kamath’s personality is his passion for the Rotary Club. He was President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town in 1994-95. He is the Joint Secretary of Special Projects at the District 3140. He has also been the chairman of various committees of Rotary International over the years.

Our Immediate Past President R P Anand was honoured with a ‘Gold Medallion’ and a traditional shawl for 50 years of dedicated service to Indian film industry. This medallion was conferred upon Mr Anand by the Film Federation of India as they celebrated100 years of Hindi cinema at Chennai. RCBMT wishes him HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS and offers our BEST WISHES to our not-so-young fellow Rotarian, R P Anand and a dear Rotarian friend!

Installation ceremony at RCKMK

The installation ceremony of Rotaract Club of

K M Kundnani College (RCKMK) was held at

The Smt Geeta Israni auditorium at Principal K M

Kundnani College of Pharmacy on

September 26, 2013, from 4.30-7.00pm.

The Chief Guests for this event were

Nagar. The event was also attended

by Zonal Rotaract Representatives

(ZRR) Aliasgar Sabuwala and Tabrez

Mandviwala. The event began by paying

respect to our National Anthem, followed by lighting of

the auspicious lamp by the chief guests.

This was followed by a message from Immediate

Past President Nitish Mishra and a secretarial speech

by Heena Bhojwani. The current President Shivam

Bhagwati was collared by

Walking for

W RLD Peace

To Promote Peace on the internationally observed UN World Peace Day, a Peace Walk was organised at Worli by the Rotaract

Club of RCBMT. Around 20 members joined hands for this project along with the World Peacekeepers Movement — an initiative by Wockhardt Foundation. The Peace Walk started around 4 pm from Aarey Dairy, Worli and concluded at the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link at around 6 pm. Various performances were given by Rotaractors along the way. Each performance had a message promoting values that, we believe, are necessary to establish world peace.

Our concept was to promote peace through seven values such as, Gratitude, Love, Humility, Patience, Truth, Forgiveness and Giving. With the rising violence in our country and also in the international community, a person who says ‘I am living in peace’ can be called a dreamer. Through this small activity, we hoped to unite all such ‘dreamers’ and make their dreams a reality.

Visit to NASEOH by INNER WHEEL CLUB

On September 30, 2013, under the dynamic leadership of President of Inner Wheel Club of RCBMT, a camp

was held at National Association for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped (NASEOH), Chembur for distribution of mobility aids and appliances to about 32 deserving persons, costing a total of about R2,16,500. Following appliances were distributed to needy patients by ten Rotary Anns present:

Donors for this project were Madhu G, Purnima, Padma, Nirmala J, Binaifer, Punam, Madhuri and many others. Further appliances from the fund mobilised by Inner Wheel Club Members will be given by October 31, 2013. The visit was largely successful due to enthusiastic and unstinted support provided by the members of Inner Wheel Club and duly assisted by Mr Shetty, Director, NASEOH, and his committed team members. We look forward to more such visits by Rotarians and Rotary Anns to NASEOH as they are our patners-in-service for over two decades.

Mobility appliances distribution camp

On October 4, 2013 a mobility appliances distribution camp was organised and sponsored

by RCBMT in memory of Smt Krishna Somani at NASEOH. These appliances were distributed to the identified needy and disabled persons at NASEOH. The entire cost of appliances has been supported by RCBMT through the support received from the Somani family. This is the fifth consecutive year where the Somani family has supported this project.

The appliances were distributed by Pres Rtn James Brunner and other Rotarians like Kersi Hilloo, Past-President Gaurav Kapadia, Naren Mohatta and members of Somani family led by Krishnakumar Somani and Piyush Khaitan. Details of the appliances distributed are as follows:

Tribute to JAGDISH SAXENA

Jagdish Saxena, another distinguished member of our Club, passed away on October 10, 2013. A man of vision, integrity and personality, Jagdish

built up a big Indian market for the pharmaceutical industry, exporting primarily to the Soviet Union.

He was a lovable person of few words but a soft heart willing to help the needy. I had the privilege of knowing him well because he once sponsored an entire conference without hesitation. This was

the Conference of Fellows of the International College of Dentistry held in Bombay when I was the president. Thereafter, he obliged me in two

other dental speciality conferences in Delhi and in Bombay with generous advertisements.

I remember how actively he took our Rotary members for a grand luncheon after we visited Nere

Village. He was truly a great Rotarian following the doctrines of our 4-Way Test. Rotary Club of

Bombay Mid-Town will surely miss him for many years to come. May his family have the courage to

bear this immense loss. Farewell my friend!

I was shocked to know about the very sad and sudden demise of my dear friend Jagdish. I had the

occasion to come in contact with him at RCBMT and also professionally. I found him to be a man with great qualities of head and heart. I still remember the grand and very warm hospitality extended by

Jagdish to the members of our Club. This was many years ago, at his factory, after our visit to Nere village

project when I was the president.

Jagdish’s passing away will leave a void which is impossible to fill. It must, indeed, be a very great

shock to Sneh and all the members of their family. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace!

Mid-Town has lost yet another gem in the sudden passing away of our dear Rtn Jagdish Saxena. He joined RCBMT

in 1987 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Jagdish was the Managing Director of Elder Pharmaceuticals Ltd and held

the classification of Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing. He was a large hearted person — always generous, contributing to

Rotary projects, very cool and calm by nature.

Large number of our members in Rotary Mid-Town will remember his welcoming ways when he often hosted lunch and beer for our members at his company premises after the annual visit to the 3-H Grant Project at Vaje-Nere in Panvel.

On two occasions he donated large boxes of medicines from his company for the medical camps which Arrow had organised for the poor Adivasis at Potkhal-Baste villages.

At this time, our thoughts go out to dear R/Ann Sneh, sons Alok and Dr Anuj, and daughter Shalini and their families. May they have the strength to cope with this

loss. May God rest his soul in ever-lasting peace.

our PP Rtn Ajit Kamlani who passed away in September. We pray for his soul

1212 INNER WHEEL

Annual Medical CampOn Sunday, September 22, 2013, the Inner Wheel Club (IWC) of RCBMT held our Annual Medical Camp at the SL & SS Girls School. This was meticulously planned by our PP Usha Aggarwal. About 150 girls availed of this benefit conducted by 20 doctors in all disciplines. Twelve members of the IWC volunteered to assist in its execution. We distributed biscuits and hygiene products like toothbrushes, toothpastes, soaps etc, to the students. To the parents of these children, we gave sugar and

vada pao. We also served snacks to the doctors and volunteers, and awarded them with certificates and chocolates as a token of our appreciation. The most important part of this medical camp is the weekly follow-up being carried out by our doctors and volunteers.

FOR MANY YEARS WITH A MUSICAL PROGRAMME. ROTARY DISTRICT

GOVERNOR LATA SUBRAIDU ALSO PRAISED THE INNER WHEEL CLUB

King George InfirmaryOn October 11, 2013, we held a project at King George Infirmary, where we celebrated Diwali with 75 patients. We distributed bedsheets and pillowcases, donated by Kailash Premnarayen and Asha Bhatia. We also shared gifts like snacks and soaps, donated by Bela Kapur.

JJ Dharamshala We have been celebrating Dassera and Diwali with the old people at JJ Dharamshala for many years with a musical programme. This year, even though renovation is going on at this place, we went and interacted with the old people there. We distributed sugar, biscuits, wafers, cakes, Maggi noodles and napkins in colourful bags to each one of them. We also donated tea and oil packets. These items were sponsored by Asha Bhatia, Ashok, Shashi, Taru and Bela. The inmates were very happy to interact with us and gave us many blessings.

Further outreachDuring the month, we donated R10,000 to National Sponsorship Council (NSC) for education of four students. We also donated R5,000 to Tata Memorial Child Cancer Ward for medicines. We even donated a printer to the

Child Cancer Ward at Cama Hospital. Together with 11 other clubs of Zone I, we took part in the Clean Chowpatty project on September 21 after Ganpati Visarjan. We contributed R5,000 and participated in the cleaning process.

Fun momentsLest we give an impression that there is all work and no play at Inner Wheel, here are some of our other activities during this festive season. In our September meeting, we had a very interesting talk by Sitanshi Talati-Parekh, Online Editor at Verve magazine, who spoke about her interaction with celebrities such as Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra. In the October meeting, we had a cooking demonstration by Rano Singh. Her special salads were a big hit with our members. All members had come in their festive attire to dance the Garba and celebrate Diwali in advance. We are happy that our Club has a steady growth in membership. At the October meeting, we inducted Rashmi Vij. This brings our total strength to 91.

Visit of District GovenorAt the Official Club Visit of Rotary District Governor Lata Subraidu, she praised the Inner Wheel Club. She also commended President Jyotika Premnarayen and her team for the various impressive projects undertaken over the previous months.
