At ang kanyang panawagan sa buong bansa – You electedme as your leader, now let me lead you.

PRESIDENT-elect NoynoyAquino surprised many in themilitary when he announcedafter his proclamation that hewas not going to retain Gen.Delfin Bangit as head of theArmed Forces of the Philip-pines. Aquino has the right tochoose his own military chiefso it should not shock thosewho thought that he would letBangit to finish his retirement.

This means too that Bangit'sintermediaries failed in im-pressing Noynoy why Bangitdeserved a second lease on hiscareer. It did not help also thatBangit and his handlers failedto project him as a man whomthe next President can fullytrust. Bangit even declared thathe would not resign and wouldfinish his term.

Bangit appeared to have

earned the ire of Noynoy who, from the start, has been suspi-cious of his loyalty. It wasBangit and his cohorts in PMAClass 78 who reportedlyhatched a plot to derail the elec-tions. The scenarios -- no elec-tion, no proclamation -- alleg-edly were floated by Class 78.

The demise soon of Bangitand eventually Class 78should signal a new beginningfor members of Class 77 whosetop graduates were bypassedin some key appointments. Ithink Noynoy will allow de-serving members of Class 77to shine and prove their worthin leading the AFP.

Class 77, however, shouldinsulate itself from politics andnever allow their members toembroil themselves in destabplots and other anti-establish-

ment activities.Noynoy did the right thing

when he retained PhilippineNational Police Chief Jesus A.Verzosa who has done a won-derful job in the last few monthsprior to the elections. The out-spoken top cop, who has beenworking so hard in the side-lines, trying hard to avoid thelimelight, has made declara-tions that set the tone of howthe elections should be con-ducted. Verzosa's pronounce-ments thwarted what couldhave happened. I remember itwas Noynoy who first de-fended Verzosa when rumorscirculated that outgoing Presi-dent Arroyo was going to sackhim for going against her men'sevil plot.

Verzosa has done enoughfor the PNP and is capable ofdoing more for the police lead-ership. I'm pretty sure that theAquino administration willfully support the transforma-tion initiatives of the PNP.Verzosa is a team player and aloyal ally. He's his own mannow and nobody can lay claimto what he has become as anofficer and gentleman.

HOLLYWOOD TATTLELindsay Lohan denies

violating any lawsCONTROVERSIAL Hollywood celeb-

rity Lindsay Lohan has denied violatingthe terms of her May bail following therecall of a bench warrant for her arrest.

Judge Marsha Revel called anemergency meeting with Lohan's at-torney and prosecutors on Tuesdayto discuss reports the alcohol moni-toring ankle bracelet the star wearsbegan flashing during a night out.

Lohan appeared to have broken acourt order banning her from drugs andalcohol after the device started to lightup at an MTV Movie Awards after-party in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The judge decided the alarm con-stituted a violation of the 23-year-oldactress' bail agreement and issued thearrest warrant - but it was rescindedan hour later when Lohan's represen-tative David Perez put down $20,000towards her $200,000 bail. Meanwhile, the “Mean Girls” star remains adamantshe did nothing to trigger the gadget.

In a series of posts on herTwitter.com page, Lohan writes, "MySCRAM (ankle bracelet) wasn't set off- it's physically impossible consider-ing I've (done) nothing for it to go off -all of these false reports are absolutelywrong. How insane are these accu-sations?! I did not violate anything...at all. It is just unfortunate and unfairbecause it distracts from the fact andthe truth that I'm in such a good place."

Lohan was fitted with the ankletlast month after missing probation

hearings related to drug and drunk-driving arrests. A status hearing isscheduled for July 6th.

DOJ asked to reverse Devanaderaresolution on Ruby Rose case

THE grieving family of mur-der victim Ruby Rose Barramedayesterday asked the Departmentof Justice (DoJ) to resolve theirpending motion for reconsidera-tion seeking to overturn the de-cision of former Justice SecretaryAgnes Devanadera exoneratingshipping magnate Lope Jimenezin the woman's brutal slaying.

Volunteers Against Crime andCorruption founding chairmanDante Jimenez and actress Roch-elle Barrameda, Ruby Rose’s sis-ter, urged Justice Secretary AlbertoAgra to reverse Devanadera's rul-ing and instead include LopeJimenez in the charge sheet.

“It’s really hard for us to ac-cept the fate that befell our lovedone, Ruby Rose. And it’s morepainful to see our institutionsdenying us the justice we need.We hope the DoJ will wake upfrom its slumber by reconsider-ing its ruling (dismissing thecharges against Lope Jimenez),"

the actress said. She also urged the authorities

to stop extending preferentialtreatment to Atty. Manuel JimenezII, father-in-law of the victim andone of the alleged mastermindsin the murder.

Manuel II is on “hospital ar-rest” at the Philippine Heart Cen-ter in Quezon City.

Barrameda said Jimenezshould be taken out of the hospi-tal and be immediately transferredto the Malabon City Jail as shesuspected that Manuel II is justfaking his illness.

It could be recalled thatDevanadera, in a 12-page reso-lution, granted the appeal of LopeJimenez to exclude him from thecharge sheet where him, hisbrother Manuel II, his nephewand Ruby Rose’s husbandManuel III, and three others wereindicted for the slay case nowpending before a Navotas court.

2010 by 27.4 percent year-on-year amount-ing to US$ 3.6 billion, according to the Na-tional Economic Development Authority(NEDA).

Likewise, Acting Socioeconomic Plan-ning Secretary Augusto Santos said theexport revenues for the first four monthsof 2010 rose by 38.9 percent at US$ 14.9billion from the same period in 2009, ac-cording to preliminary reports from theNational Statistics Office.

“This was the fourth consecutive monththat exports registered positive year-on-year growth as global trade continued torecover,” he said.

According to Santos , the growth wassupported by the increase in exports ofmanufactured goods (29.7 percent), totalagro-based products (34.3 percent) andmineral products (16.1 percent).

This surge of manufactured productswas attributed to the sustained increasein three traditionally largest exportgroups.

These are electronic products (29.7 per-cent), machinery and transport equip-ment (52.7 percent) and garments (6.2percent).

“This considerable rise in electronicexports followed worldwide trend as glo-bal sales of semiconductors surged by 50.4percent in April as reported by the Semi-conductor Industry Association,” Santosadded.

Also, continuous improvements in thefollowing months are expected as the NorthAmerican Semiconductor Equipment In-dustry reported that a book-to-bill ratio of1.13 was recorded in April 2010.

Militant workers troop to wage board office on low pay hikeMILITANT group Kilusang

Mayo Uno (KMU) yesterdayconducted picket in front of theNational Wage and Produc-tivity Board office in Manilato protest its approval of theP22 daily wage increase inMetro Manila.

The group called for ahigher wage hike sayingeven the P125 across theboard wage increase theyhave been pushing since2000 is no longer enough tomake ends meet.

Despite the protestersquestioning the low wage in-crease approved by the Re-gional Tripartite Wage andProductivity Board, no vio-lent confrontation took placebetween the protesters andthe police.

Last Tuesday, the wageboard approved the P22 wagehike saying it was a win-winsolution.

Meanwhile, militant um-brella group Bagong AlyansangMakabayan (Bayan) contested

the outgoing Arroyo adminis-tration's claim of generating sixto 10 million jobs during herwatch from 2004 to 2010.

Bayan said the promise tocreate six to 10 million jobs,or at least a million jobs a year, should have made a signifi-cant dent on the country’s un-employment situation.

The group added that un-employment under PresidentArroyo’s watch may havesurpassed previous adminis-trations.

PRESIDENT-elect Benigno “Noynoy”Aquino III has dropped his nickname foranother moniker which was first suggestedby his sister actress-television host KrisAquino-Yap.

Aquino said his new nickname “P. Noy”is a bit less informal and something whichmakes his more accessible to people.

He would prefer P. Noy than his owninitials which is PBSA (President BenignoServillano Aquino) since it sounded toomuch like PSBA which stands for Philip-pine School of Business Administration.

Aquino said he celebrated his victory inthe May 10 elections with his family andfriends at a Quezon City restaurant. He told

Noynoy wants to be called ‘P. Noy‘reporters that his electoral win was not hisown but the collective effort of millions ofFilipinos who supported him.

Aquino said he is still getting used tolosing his privacy and his weekends, whichhe now plans to spend on official duties.

“I am reserving half a day on Sundaysfor family. We'll just have to adjust. No morespur-of-the-moment decisions to go toTarlac,” he said.

Another adjustment that his familyneeds to make is the matter of security. Hesaid the Presidential Security Group (PSG)will be assigning agents to his family, par-ticularly several members who are still inschool.

THE Food and Nutrition Research Institute-DOST in part-nership with Coca-Cola Philippines continues its advocacy ofpromoting proper hydration through its series of symposia en-titled H2010: Symposium on Hydration. The first leg of this willbe held on June 17, 2010 at the Don Mariano Hall of Villa CaceresHotel in Naga City. The morning session involves technical dis-cussions for health practitioners while the afternoon is a layforum for barangay health workers, the academe and media. The Naga leg is also made possible by the Department of Sci-ence and Technology – Region V and the National NutritionCouncil – Region V.

Hydration is an important but often forgotten aspect of health.According to the Beverage Institute for Health and Wellness(BIHW), “Proper hydration plays a crucial role in helping youstay healthy and perform your best. Fluids from the water andbeverages you drink and the foods you eat are your body’s pri-mary source of water, which it needs to regulate body tempera-ture, keep skin moist, and transport oxygen and other essentialnutrients to your cells. Your body is constantly losing water –through your breath as you exhale, through perspiration, andurine. This water must be replaced to maintain good health(www.thebeverageinstitute.org. 2010).”

The FNRI-DOST and Coca-Cola began the advocacy in Ma-nila in 2006, pioneering this symposium which focuses solelyon the topic of hydration. The two organizations went on tohold other symposia in 2007 in Cebu and 2008 in Davao. AfterNaga, two more symposia are being planned for the latter partof 2010.

Speakers who will discuss various aspects of hydration in-clude Dr. Rodolfo Florentino, Scientific Adviser for the Interna-tional Life Sciences – Southeast Asia, Mrs. Sanirose Orbeta, Vice-President, Philippine Association for the Study of Overweightand Obesity, Prof. Hercules P. Callanta, former Dean, Institute ofHuman Kinetics of the University of the Philippines Diliman,Dr. Mario V. Capanzana, Director of the FNRI-DOST and Mrs.Celeste C. Tanchoco, Scientist III from the FNRI-DOST. Speakersfrom the different areas where the symposia will be held arealso invited.

One of the topics discussed during this symposium is hydra-tion guidelines. The BIHW recommends not 8 but more – 11 to16 cups of total fluids depending on age, weight, gender, theweather and level of physical activity. Fluids also mean thatwater is not the only source of hydration but also all beverageswhich contain water and food like fruits, vegetables, soups andstews.

JB Baylon, VP for Public Affairs and Communications of Coca-Cola Philippines shares, “Hydration is one of three key valueswhich Coca-Cola promotes in order to live a healthy and activelifestyle, together with a balanced diet and regular physical ac-tivity. With H2010, we aim to inform more people about the greatimportance of hydration and hopefully encourage them to fullylive out a healthy and active lifestyle.”

For more information about hydration and the role that bev-erages play in a healthy and active lifestyle, visitwww.thebeverageinstitute.org.

Cotto to face Pacquiao in rematch?AFTER the dismantling of

boxing contender Yuri Foreman,Miguel Cotto is banking on hisconvincing victory to take onManny Pacquiao again in an-other title fight.

This development came aftertalks about a Pacquiao-Cottorematch buzzed around the box-ing scene.

This time, Cotto’s newly ac-quired WBA 154-lbs title belt willbe at stake, improving the legacyof the Pacman into an eight divi-sion champ, a feat which no hallof famer has ever accomplished.

This possibility will fill in thevacuum of the Pacquiao-

Mayweather fight should nego-tiations fail once and for all.

If we recall, Pacquiao domi-nated almost all of the roundsduring his first showdown withthe Boricuan Bomber and therewas no question that Manny isthe superior fighter between thetwo.

For sure Cotto’s trainerEmmanuel Steward will throwwords like “we have a new blueprint to beat Pacquiao” or“Miguel has learned from hismistakes.” These statements arefamiliar lines mentioned duringthe media hype of the Pacquiao-Morales 3 rubber-match.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadDr. Scott Kurtzman, chief of surgery at Water-

bury Hospital in Connecticut, was on his way to de-liver a lecture when he witnessed a horrible crashinvolving 20 vehicles. The doctor shifted into traumamode, worked his way through the mess of metal, andcalled out, “Who needs help?” After 90 minutes ofassisting, and the victims were taken to area hospi-tals, Dr. Kurtzman commented, “A person with myskills simply can’t drive by someone who is injured. Irefuse to live my life that way.”

Jesus told a parable about a man who stopped tohelp another (Luke 10:30-37). A Jewish man hadbeen ambushed, stripped, robbed, and left for dead. AJewish priest and a temple assistant passed by, sawthe man, and crossed over to the other side. Then adespised Samaritan came by, saw the man, and wasfilled with compassion. His compassion was trans-lated into action: He soothed and bandaged the man’swounds, took him to an inn, cared for him while hecould, paid for all his medical expenses, and then prom-ised the innkeeper he would return to pay any addi-tional expenses.

There are people around us who are suffering. Movedwith compassion for their pain, let’s be those whostop to help.

Reach out in Jesus’ nameWith hands of love and care

To those who are in needAnd caught in life’s despair. —Sper

PRESIDENT-elect Benigno “Noynoy”Aquino III is not closing his doors for reconcili-ation with his political opponents and may evenoffer them to work under his administration.

Aquino, after his proclamation by Con-gress on Wednesday, said the election cam-paign was so “bruising” that he wants toput an end to the conflict and work togetherwith some of his political rivals.

“If we can end senseless actions and workfor the nation's welfare, why shouldn't I in-vite them and why shouldn't I work with allsectors?” Aquino told reporters during a pressconference after his proclamation.

Aquino said he is thanking his closest ri-val for the presidency, former president Jo-seph Estrada, for finally conceding and ex-pressing support for his administration.

”As for the others who have conceded andoffered to help, we'll probably tap their expe-rience and ability to quickly come up with thesolutions needed by our people,” Aquino said.
