Look at the flowers bloom on this cookie! Trinity celebrated another HUG2 milestone when we received contributions totaling more than $1.3M. The HUG2 campaign is Trinity’s capital stewardship campaign whose goal is to pay off our indebtedness on our new Education Center. HUG2 Recommitment Sunday is April 22.

“40 Days for Life” VolunteersTrinity Lutheran and Holy Ghost Roman Catholic churches were responsible for volunteers to

stand and pray outside of the Planned Parenthood building on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.Those involved were: 6:30 - 8 a.m. Delmas Heinke - Trinity, Cindy Brights and Stefanie – Our

Savior Lutheran; 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Liz Hinkel and her son, Fred – Pilgrim Lutheran, Marie Lynn Heggie - friend of Amy Mueschke; 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. John and Sherry Stoerkel - Trinity, Jim and Ethelene Marshall - Our Savior; 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Beverly Meaden – Trinity; and 1 - 3:15 p.m. Pastor and Audrey Black.

There was one faithful volunteer from Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church who represented her congregation from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., an amazing woman who has a passion for life.

We pray for God's continued blessing upon this Lenten ministry as we understand and appreciate life from the womb to the grave, from the beginning of life to the end of life. “. . . whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Trinity Today - 3

Make Your Financial Resolutions in AprilThe first of January reminds us to make our annual resolutions: to break a bad habit, to

exercise regularly, to find a new job. Similarly, April is time to take stock of our finances and to make resolutions for the coming year. As we gather documents and prepare tax filings, it’s an excellent time to commit to a financial budget, to change 401(k) retirement elections, or rebalance investments. This April, please add your HUG2 and ministry giving to the list.

On Sunday, April 22, we will ask for a “Help Us Grow 2” recommitment from each Trinity member when we celebrate the end of the first year of this 3-year capital stewardship campaign. Watch for a letter and commitment card in your mailbox later this month. We hope that you feel called upon to make a commitment for the remaining two years of HUG2 if you haven’t previously. For those who are faithfully fulfilling your original commitments, we sincerely say “thank you.” And a special thank-you to those who have already given their entire commitment gift. We know that financial circumstances are not fixed and that you may want to adjust the amount of your pledge going forward. We pray that you have been blessed through your sacrificial giving and now see that you can contribute additional funds. We know sometimes that unforeseen events can change our plans and want you to be able to adjust your pledge for those circumstances as well. Be sure to join us at regular worship services on April 22 as we celebrate the renewal of our commitments.

As of January 31, 2012, the amount pledged was $2,915,124 and a total of 468 families have participated in the campaign to date. The note on the Education Center was signed last Fall for $5.2 million after applying $0.4 million of HUG2 gifts as a down payment toward the construction cost. The monthly payment on this loan is $24,825.60 and we are pleased to note that giving has been well in excess of that required payment, partially spurred by end-of-year giving.

During April, take time to pause and reflect on God’s faithfulness to you as you “put the Lord to the test” (Malachi 3:10) and make a sacrificial commitment. Below are prayers for the week prior to April 22 to guide you as you ponder His plan for your family. Plan now to join all of God’s family at Trinity to participate in our spirit-filled Recommitment Sunday!

April 15 Lord, I give thanks to you for the gifts You have given me - my life, my family, my friends - time, abilities, and

financial resources. All that I have comes from You. Help me to remember this and rejoice in Your goodness. April 16 Disturb me, Lord, when I become too complacent in my faith, when my goals have been met because I aimed

too low, when I arrive safely because I didn’t stray too far from shore. I ask You to open up the horizon of my dreams and to push me into the future with courage, hope, and love.

April 17 Help me to trust You, Heavenly Father, to provide all that I need while on earth as well as my eternal life in Heaven. Open my mind and heart so that I may accept Your challenge to use all my gifts in service of You and one another to build Your Kingdom on earth.

April 18 Jesus, bless the ministries carried out in the Trinity Education Center and may the Holy Spirit guide the teachings of my brothers and sisters who serve there. Help me to share my faith with others so they also may accept You as their risen Lord and live with You in Heaven forever.

April 19 O God, I resolve to put You first in my life. As Your steward, I resolve to sacrifice when necessary but always to do so out of a spirit of sincere love, just as Jesus did for me. I humbly accept the challenge to share from my means rather than from the excess.

April 20 Father, help me to practice Christian stewardship of Your wondrous gifts in each decision I make. Help me to conserve limited resources, to lovingly tend to the creatures You have given me dominion over, and to be mindful of my body and health so I may be of greater service to You. Stir in me a desire to treat each moment of life as precious and not to waste it. I know there will be times when I will fail to be a good steward, but I pledge to keep on trying.

April 21 Bless the HUG2 campaign, dear Lord, and all those who participate in this effort. Guide those entrusted with decisions over the funds that are raised so that our collective resources are used to the greatest good in expanding Your Kingdom. May our sacrifice and trust in You inspire the generations coming after us to carry on Trinity’s mission of sharing Christ's saving love with all people, now.

Getting a Grip on Better HealthWeak handshakes can reveal more about you than you think. In the

past thirty (30) years, more than thirty (30) studies have found that a “weak grip is associated with premature mortality and future disability among adults who are middle-aged or older.” A weak grip has also been linked to health issues including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Hand strength reaches its peak in middle age before weakening with increasing age and a lack of physical activity and a rapidly declining grip could also signal a health problem. If you find that your grip is rapidly weakening, it might be wise to consult your physician.

Here are two (2) suggestions from the American Council on Exercise to strengthen your grip. It is suggested to add these to your exercise routine at least four (4) days a week:

• Rubber-ball squeeze. Grasp a rubber ball in one hand and squeeze it hard for anywhere from 5-60 seconds. Slowly release it and rest for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times, then switch hands.

• Dumbbell wrist curl. With a light dumbbell in each hand, kneel beside a bench or chair, resting your arms on the seat. (CAUTION: If you can’t kneel perform this from a sitting position – don’t risk a fall or find yourself unable to rise from the kneeling position!) Turn your palms up and bend your elbows about 90 degrees, placing your wrists at the chair’s edge, if you’re kneeling; if you are sitting, use the arm of the chair. Slowly bend your wrists, moving the weights downward, pause then slowly roll your wrists up. Squeeze the weights hard during both movements. Then try this exercise with your palms facing down. Aim for 10-15 repetitions.

(SOURCE: Consumer Reports on Health, February 2012)

REMEMBER: As you begin any NEW activity, begin slowly, do not go beyond your limitations in the beginning, and “work up” to the suggested number of strengthening activities!

PROMISE: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26 (NIV)

Trinity Adult Studies for AprilEvery Husband a Hero • Pastor Leeland • Mary Martha Fellowship Hall • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (04/15 - 05/06)

Join us for breakfast and encouraging one another in our roles as great husbands who love their wives dearly.Faith Discovery • Pastor Dorn • Room 123 • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (04/15 - 06/03)

Faith Discovery is an experience where you can ask questions about God and learn about who He is. This class is part of our Discipleship Process at Trinity and may lead to membership.

Peter: Learning to Be Like Jesus • Jim Cleary • Room 211 • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (03/18 - 06/10)Peter – he demanded that Christ wash his head as well as his feet; he wanted to build three temples; he swore he’d never betray Jesus, and then he did just that three times in the same night; he fell asleep while Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. Even with a track record like this, Peter was part of Christ’s most inner circle. He followed Christ like we do, and sometimes, like Peter we struggle with doubts and fail. Still we are loved and forgiven. Simon Peter was a follower like us. He wanted to be like Jesus, but he struggled with doubts, and at times he failed. This study on the life of Peter will show us how God used Peter to advance His Kingdom. He uses us too.

Shepherding a Child's Heart • Lori Roesel and Linda Banes • Room 214 • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (03/11 - 06/24) All parents want to guide their children to understand themselves and the world they live in and to live in healthy, positive relationships with one another. To do this effectively, parents must do more than just tell kids what to do. Through open communication, self-disclosure and intentionally living out their own values, parents can truly shepherd their children's hearts. From the author: "The central focus of parenting is the gospel. You need to direct not simply the behavior of your children but the attitudes of their hearts."

The Book of Acts • Dave Weinhold • Room 205 • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (ends 11/25)The 205 Class continues their study of the Book of Acts. As the church spread from Jerusalem to Rome, it was clear that its development was truly the manifestation of Jesus Christ in the lives of the apostles, and so the church continues to spread the Good News today. The Book of Acts records the first-century progress of God’s mission to reach everyone everywhere – even in downtown Houston - with the promise of forgiveness and everlasting life in Christ, and it compels us to continue that mission today.

Twisting the Truth • Phyllis Brockermeyer • Room 232 • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (04/15 - 06/17)Some lies are little and white, but some are big enough to ruin our relationships, our professional lives, even our eternities. Twisting the Truth is a study that examines four highly destructive lies about authority, pain, sex and sin. We’ll see how to exchange these lies for the eternal truth of God’s love and forgiveness.

We Three Kings • Bill Fischer • Chapel • Sunday • 9:30 a.m. (ongoing)King David is crowned! The Chapel Class continues their study of Saul, David, and Solomon – three of the strongest kings in all history. God’s love and forgiveness for them are His gifts to us as well. To find out more about these incredible Old Testament kings, join the Chapel Class.

Tuesday Morning Women’s Bible Study • Audrey Black • Room 205 • 10:00 a.m. (ends 05/22) The Book of Isaiah unveils the full dimensions of God's judgment and His salvation. God is the Holy One of Israel who rains compassion on His people and rescues them from both political and spiritual oppression. When His people are exiled, He makes streams spring up in the desert as He graciously leads them home. The theme of a highway for the return of exiles is a prominent one in both major parts of the book. The Lord raises a banner to summon the nations to bring Israel home. Come join the Tuesday Women’s Bible Study group as we continue our study of this most significant book of the Old Testament.

Bible Breakfast - The Sermon on the Mount • Suzanne Kurth • Wednesday • 8:00 a.m. • Room 232 (03/21 - 05/16)What would it have been like to sit on the hillside and listen to Christ tell you that you’re blessed if you are poor in spirit, grieving, meek? The Sermon on the Mount is one of the greatest sermons ever preached. It describes in startling imagery what human life and humankind look like when they come under the gracious rule of God and when we seek His Kingdom first.

Faithful Families • Natalia Junkans • Wednesday • 5:30 p.m. • Room 232 (04/11 - 05/13)One of the greatest desires we have as parents is to raise children who are faithful to the Father, but how do we do that in our demanding, secular world? Come join with other moms and dads who also want to raise godly young men and women as we begin a study of Faithful Families. This group strives to be encouraging and to hold each other – as well as our kids - close in prayer.

Faith Discovery • Pastor Lytle • Room 124 • Wednesday • 6:30 p.m. (04/18 - 06/06)Faith Discovery is an experience where you can ask questions about God and learn about who He is. This class is part of our Discipleship Process at Trinity and may lead to membership.

Wednesday Women’s Study - The Gospel of Mark • Mary Oliver • Room 205 • 6:30 p.m. (04/11 - 05/16) The Gospel of Mark, the earliest gospel, describes the character of Jesus as a Servant of God. This gospel begins with the baptism and the life of Jesus in Galilee, continues through the transfiguration, follows Jesus and His disciples from Galilee to Jerusalem, concluding with His entry into that holy city (chapter 11); the final section is the story of Jesus' passion -- apocalyptic and addresses the end of time; the final chapter contains the resurrection.

Sonrise Bible Study - Pastor Black • Room 121 • Thursday • 6:30 a.m. (ongoing)There’s no better way to start a day than with time in the Word with fellow Christians. The Sonrise group meets at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings in Room 121 at Trinity to study God’s Word closely and deeply. Each week this group studies the Scripture from the lectionary for the following Sunday.

Prayers and Promises by Pastor David Leeland

At the first evening class session for Great Marriage, I asked the couples what ingredients did they think would go into making a Great Marriage?

I woke up the next morning with this question on my mind so I thought I would share what the research says that goes into a Great Marriage.

Research gives seven ingredients to a growing Great Marriage. This means that when couples are growing in these areas their marriage is great and becoming even greater (deeper, stronger, better, fabulous and fantastic)!

h Growing in friendship (BFF) – You start out as friends and lovers and over time become better and better friends till you are each other’s best friend and ultimately Best Friends Forever.

h Having more and more fun – You start out making fun an art form so don’t lose sight of how important it is to enjoy each other, to play together, relax together, explore life together, and share the wonder and the beauty of life together.

h Learning to manage stuff – When we date and relate, we put reality on the back burner. When we get married, reality comes rushing in. In a Great Marriage we learn to manage the stuff of life to keep it from overrunning us or crowding out our friendship and fun together.

h Earning your BA, MS, PhD, and Continuing Education in each other – It takes time and energy to really get to know each other enough to get married. When we get married, the clock starts over and we not only have to get to know each other all over again, we need to keep learning from each other, about each other, and delight in each other as we learn and affirm and celebrate who we are together.

h Moving from ME -> WE – This is about your attitude, where your heart and mind are focused. Instead of thinking ME, you’re thinking WE. Instead of feeling ME, you’re feeling WE. Instead of being all about yourself, you’re wanting WE. And, you’re connecting with each other, facing life with all of your talents and strengths and abilities together. You say, “We’re a team! We’re in this together!” And, you keep on continually connecting together despite all the pressures that the world sends your way to pull the two of you apart.

h Learn to say “I love you!” in your spouse’s love language. – We usually express love in the way we want to receive it with the assumption that our spouse wants to be loved exactly the way we do. We need to learn each other’s love language and then become fluent in speaking, saying, doing, sharing and expressing love to each other in that language. You can go to www.5lovelanguages.com to take the online quiz or better yet, pick up a copy of Gary Chapman’s book, The Five Love Languages, to deepen your ability to share and express love to each other.

h Celebrating and developing the one-flesh union of your marriage – Your marriage is uniquely yours in how you live out your one-flesh union: One-flesh in your bodies, one-flesh in the sharing of your hearts and minds, one-flesh in your worship and devotion to the Lord, one-flesh in the use of all your resources and finances, one-flesh in your service to God and how you make a difference in our world. Though one might be doing one thing and the other something different, yet you are with each other in all these things because of the one-flesh union of your marriage.

[Jesus said,] 4 "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." [Matthew 19:4-6; ESV]

May yours be a Great Marriage filled with the abundant blessings of love and grace from our Lord Jesus Christ. To God be all the glory!

Marriage First and Great Marriage Class Team Up(Pictured left) Mike and Pattie Dean led our study on the The Five Love Languages when the Marriage First group met in February. So what’s your love language –Words of affirmation? Receiving gifts? Acts of service? Touch? Quality time?

(Pictured clockwise below) In March the Marriage First group hosted brunch for the first Great Marriage class. Here are pictures of the 4 engineers it took to get the oven going so we could make Crème Brulee French Toast (definitely worth the trouble!) Thanks to Jim Vanderwater, Dag Calafell, Wil Bertrand, and Rachel Calafell. Some of the other participants in the event were Sarah Peters and Mike Blanchard (GM), Dag and Rachel Calafell (MF), Dave Conner and Kristen Bolick (GM), Wil and Julie Bertrand (MF).
