UP FRONT

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD THROUGH THE BRONX CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

One of the worst feelings is not being heard

by government and elected officials especially for small businesses in New York City. Too often regulations and

legislation impacting business and the economy is passed without the input or advanced communication with the business community or

Chambers of Commerce.

Membership in the Bronx Chamber of Commerce is an excellent way

to “Let Your Voice Be Heard”!

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1894 and is the oldest Chamber of Commerce in the City of New York. Similar to a

landmark designated building or property over 100 years old, the

Chamber requires significant renovations, updating and maintenance.

A lot work has been accomplished in less than 3 years since I took the helm as President and CEO to build a solid foundation for the benefit

of the Bronx business community and the Bronx Chamber of Commerce.

With nearly 35 years’ experience in the non-profit and business world

on a local, state and national level, I strongly believe that in order to be successful over the long term:

1. Leadership within the Chamber must be a partnership;

2. Show support of the President/CEO and the Staff to build

morale; 3. Provide constructive recommendations to assist in the

success of the Staff and simultaneously ensure the success of Chamber;

4. Do what you can and lead by example; 5. If you have the financial resources, commit to a Community

6. Partnership and encourage others to do the same;

7. If you do not have the financial resources, encourage your contacts and everyone you do business with to join the

Chamber; 8. If there is a problem, provide a solution”

There are many committees and opportunities to “Let Your Voice Be Heard through the Bronx Chamber of Commerce”. Serving on committees

is an excellent way to network and meet potential new customers; interact with fellow members to share ideas and common interests; and

further the Chamber’s objectives for Bronx businesses through

promotion, support and advocacy initiatives.

I look forward to hearing your voice and to your active participation in building a Greater Bronx Chamber of Commerce! ■

The administration’s recent decision to alter the Clear Curbs pilot program in Brooklyn and Queens is a small victory for mom-and-pop shops citywide. The program, which started in March, was designed to be a six-month study of the impacts of banning curbside parking as well as loading and unloading during morning (7:00am to 10:00am) and evening (4:00pm to 7:00pm) rush hours in order to create additional driving lanes.

However, instead of alleviating congestion, all Clear Curbs has done is harm local businesses and consumers. Businesses in the impacted pilot zones have seen revenue fall by 20-50 percent and are facing the choice of paying rent or firing employees. A main reason for this is the simple fact that businesses were not given adequate time to adjust their delivery schedules. Several businesses told me that they did not find out about the program until a few days before its start date.

The impacts of this experiment have been devastating. In only a few months, this pilot has led to over 91,000 tickets issued and almost 2,000 cars towed due to its botched rollout and the administration’s refusal to listen to outside voices.

All of this has happened just because someone had a theory ─ and not a good one at that. I t al l could have been avoided had the administration simply listened to stakeholders and activists who foresaw the disastrous results from the beginning. The city does not get a pat on the back for finally realizing that alterations should be made now that the lives of business owners have been ruined and consumers have been needlessly ticketed and towed. The damage has been done and it is too little too late ─ and in some cases the damage is permanent.

In order to ensure that nobody is caught unprepared again we must take action to ensure that government and the private sector are engaged in a two way dialogue ─ the administration’s “City Hall knows best” approach is not sustainable. That is why I have taken tours of the impacted communities to see and hear the results first hand.

As a result of my conversations with BIDs and community leaders I, along with Majority Leader Cumbo and Councilman Moya, have introduced the Protect NYC Jobs and Businesses Act (Intro 887), a bill that would require city agencies to notify councilmembers, BIDs, and Community Boards of alterations that would impact street usage & parking.

“You can only get out of a community that which you put into it” ■
