From the moment the lifts stop turning for the ski season, the focus turns to summer. Mountain bikers from around the Okanagan and throughout B.C. and Alberta are clamouring for the trails to open at Silver Star Bike Park.

“We may not get the press that Whistler Bike Park gets,” said Cam Sorensen, Bike Park director at Silver Star, “but we’re quickly gaining attention within the industry as one of the best places to ride.”

With over 1,600 vertical feet of trails, serviced by the Comet Express Six-Pack chairlift, Silver Star’s progressive bike park has riders begging for more. And this year, the resort has listened.

The Bike Park opens June 24 and runs seven days a week until Sept. 6. The resort has decided to add two bonus weekends, the first on Sept. 11 and 12. The final weekend will be Sept. 18 and 19.

While mountain biking is the big draw in summer, the resort is expanding its horizons. Silver Star’s village provides a colour-ful backdrop for some fantastic picture opportunities, or a lei-surely stroll. Bugaboos, Isidores on Main Street, The Saloon, Bean To Cup, and the Bulldog Cafe will all be open, along with retail outlets Coldstream Dry Goods and Ski Dazzle. Mix in some scenic hiking trails, along with wildflower tours hosted by

Roseanne Van Ee of Outdoor Discoveries, and your summer starts to take shape.

This year a new hiking trail has been added, starting on the At-tridge slope and finishing at the Alpine Meadows sub-division.

“If you’ve never been for a hike at Silver Star, you’re really missing out,” explains Heather Boyd, guest services manager for the resort. “You can take a scenic chairlift ride to the top and then make your way down through the wildflowers. If you’re lucky there will be some wildlife to view too.”

The Summit chairlift runs every Friday to Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. Boyd said there are a few essentials everyone needs when going for a hike at Silver Star.

“Weather changes can come about real quick on the moun-tain. Everyone should dress in

layers and have hiking shoes,” commented Boyd. “Plus it’s a good idea to have water and bug spray.”

Boyd said while there are some basic essentials for hiking, a vital component to a success-ful hike at Silver Star is your camera.

“The scenery is amazing. You’ll kick yourself if you forget.”

Back for its ninth year is the annual Okanagan Summer Wine Festival, Aug. 13 and 14, fea-turing seminars, wine masters dinners, and the progressive tasting event tickets are selling fast. The wine festival also fea-tures a number of great vacation packages with overnight stays at Snowbird Lodge.

The luxury accommodation also plays a vital role in one of Silver Star’s fastest growing businesses — weddings.

Combining Snowbird with the resort’s lush wildflowers, the Monashee mountains, and fan-tastic dining options, has made the resort a popular venue for that special day.

Silver Star’s wedding gazebo sits beside the red barn on the winter ski run Horsin’ Around. Anna Tilly, groups coordinator for the resort, says they offer a unique setting that sets them apart from other venues.

“More and more we are get-ting requests from couples looking for something other than the traditional,” said Tilly. “With the Monashee Mountains in the background, a horse-drawn car-riage, the Silver Grill Steak and Chop House, and Snowbird as options, it’s truly gorgeous.”

bike park rolls out another great seasonPassion, definitely. Obsession, more than likely.Cam Sorensen and Ian Galbraith know all too well what it takes

to make a bike park successful.“You’ve got to love what you’re doing, because it’s certainly not

going to make you rich,” laughs Sorensen, Silver Star’s bike park director and self-confessed trail junkie.

Once winter finally relents and gives way to the spring melt, So-rensen and his trail crew start rebuilding the trails in preparation for the upcoming season. Between the runoff that washes away large sections of trail and reconstructing wooden features, the start of a new season takes its toll on the crew.

“The winter definitely leaves its mark on the trails, but that’s just part of the process. We look forward to getting back out there and working on what we’ve built. It builds the anticipation.”

A cooler than usual spring has also meant less melting in the tree line at the top, another of Mother Nature’s obstacles. But despite less than desirable conditions, rarely will you see a flash of frustra-tion in the eyes of Silver Star’s trail crew. They build it because they love to ride it. They build it because they can’t think of anything they world rather do with their summer. It’s their passion.

“Every run brings that same thrill, that desire to be better than what I was on my last run,” explains Sorensen. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does ...”

The glimmer of passion that reflects in Sorensen’s eye is shared by thousands throughout the West. For one in particular, it’s his full time job.

Galbraith is Silver Star’s manager of summer operations and his passion, or healthy obsession, as he loves to call it, is channeled into ensuring the future of the bike park grows. Galbraith served almost three years as the resort’s events manager, before taking some time off to travel. Upon his return he’s shifted his focus to building the resort’s growing summer season. There’s no question mountain biking is at the forefront of the resort’s success.

“We’ve developed a bike park that caters to everyone from begin-ners to experts. From riders looking to push the limits to families just taking up the sport, Silver Star Bike Park meets their needs. It’s just a great place to ride.”

The Bike Park is also constantly upgrading its trails. The trail crew are always adding new wooden features and perfecting their berms and tabletops.

Sorensen and his crew are also busy building a new blue trail that will make it easier for riders to get back to the mid-mountain village. The yet-to-be-named trail is typical of trails in the Bike Park. Long, flowy, lots of berms, and definitely a challenge.

“We ride a lot,” commented Sorensen, “not just at Silver Star, but throughout B.C. and the U.S. All those things we see and experi-ence, we try to incorporate in our trails.”

Galbraith’s love of the sport has taken him to places like Europe and Australia, and he knows a successful bike park needs more than just great trails.

You need people who are truly engaged in the sport to under-stand what it takes to grow. We have that here.”

One of B.C.’s best bike parks just got better.

Silver Star Bike Park has partnered with Norco to be the official rental bike for the resort.Ian Galbraith, summer opera-tions manager for Silver Star, is stoked to have them on-board.

“They are a leader in the mountain bike industry and their presence on the moun-tain only enhances the riders’ exerience,” said Galbraith, who rides a Norco Shore 1.

Silver Star is carrying four bikes this summer: the A-Line and Shore 3 for advanced

riders, the Fluid 3 for blue

and green trails and for kids 12 and under there is the Jammer.

Galbraith said the addition of the A-Line will certainly get riders’ attention. Retailing for more than $4,200, the bike features top-of-the-line compo-nents like Marzocchi 888 RVC triple clamp forks, Avid front and rear brakes, and Kenda Nevagal tires.

“These bikes are bullet proof,” says Galbraith. “They’re built to last.”

New this year for the Silver Star Bike Park is the ability for the public to purchase one of the 50-plus rental bikes at the end of the season.

Anyone can put down a 15 per cent deposit and hold the bike of their choice.

“It’s a great program because you’re going to be able to pick up some bikes at discounts of more than 45 per cent.

The A-Line retails for $4,250 and will be selling for $2,250.

The Shore 3 retails for $2,125 and will be selling for $1,350.

The Fluid 3 retails for $1,950 and will sell for $1,250.

The Jammer kids bike retails for $510 and will sell for $325.

Galbraith said riders can be assured bikes will be in excel-lent condintion at season’s end as all bikes will be serviced in-house through the Double Diamond Service Shop.

“No rental bike goes out of the shop without being thor-oughly checked first. Safety is our number one priority in terms of our mountain bike product.”

wineIt’s only fitting that some of the Okanagan’s best wineries will

be coming to one of B.C.’s best summer venues. The ninth annual Okanagan Summer Wine Festival is back at

Silver Star Aug. 13 and 14, and offers the opportunity to relax and savour all the joys the region has to offer. As many as 30 wineries are expected to take part in the annual event.

The Wine Festival combines the breathtaking beauty of Silver Star and combines it with the world class wineries of the Okanagan, says Robin Baycroft, resort services manager at Silver Star, and wine enthusiast.

“It’s a great mix in fine dining, informative seminars, hiking, biking, and an art exhibit by Gallery Odin,” he said. “You can understand why this is one of the most popular events of the summer.”

The popularity of the event sees Silver Star taking bookings as early as March. The wine master’s dinners and certain seminars tend to fill up fast.

“Whether it’s the Sinful Chocolate and Heavenly Wine seminar, tapas at The Silver Grill or the Progressive Wine Tasting event, we have a hard time keeping up with the requests,” noted Baycroft.

Last year’s Progressive Wine Tasting set a record of more than 500 tickets sold. The outdoor event is held in the middle of Silver Star’s Victorian Village and features live music.

“A little jazz and a little wine make for a great combination,” says Baycroft.

While both events tend to sell out fast, there are others on the schedule that are growing in reputation. The Wine Masters’ Dinners are a must for anyone looking to pair a good wine with a well-aged steak.

This year’s line-up includes a dinner at The Bulldog, and tapas at The Silver Grill and in Allora’s, the popular wine bistro located in lower level of The Bulldog Hotel.

Silver Star has some add-on events to this year’s festival. The Saloon will host an after-party Saturday night following the conclusion of the Progressive Wine Tasting event.

In addition, a Sunday brunch at The Bulldog Hotel is on the menu for just $25.

For more info or to book tickets, call 1-800-663-4431 or go to www.skisilverstar.com.

silver star’swedding bliss

There are moments in everyone’s life that burn deep in your conscience. Memories so vivid you close your eyes and relive the experience. However, there are very few of those moments that require you to hire a photographer.

Your wedding day is one of those few days that will be relived over and over in your mind and in photos.

Silver Star is quickly building a reputation as premier wedding spot in both summer and winter, with its majestic backgrounds, cool mountain air, and professional team that helps organize everything from venues to dinner options.

“The different vantage points for your wedding provide truly outstanding photo opportunities,” notes Anna Tilly, groups manager at Silver Star. “The wedding gazebo in the summertime use the Monashees as a beautiful backdrop. We’ve also added the steps of FireLight as a new option.”

“The Meadow” — adjacent to The Ridge subdivision —serves as the winter backdrop.

“Mother Nature does fantastic work, painting a gorgeous background. But weddings take an enormous amount of planning, as any woman will tell you,” laughs Tilly.

Let’s face it, wedding planning isn’t a “guy thing.” They may take an interest in their own stag, but when it comes to picking flowers, invitations, wines, and deserts, the best laid plans are left in the hands of the bride. That’s where Tilly and Jenny Winberg of the Silver Star groups department come in and lend a hand.

Silver Star can accommodate smaller weddings with as few as 40 guests to larger gatherings of 320 — with the help of Silver Star Club Resort.

“Besides the natural beauty of the setting, we boast one of the Okanagan’s best quaint restaurants,” points out Tilly, referring to The Silver Grill Steak and Chop House.

The restaurant prides itself on using only the freshest local produce and meats, paired with Okanagan wines. Tilly said Silver Star and her co-workers also have an advantage in dealing with large groups and wedding planning, since the resort plays home to more than 300,000 guests every winter.

In addition, Tilly said Silver Star can offers discounts on accommodations. The resort is also a great venue for stags and stagettes.

a challenge to allphotographers

Back for its third season, the Dakine Photo Challenge at Sil-ver Star is gaining a loyal following. Amature photographers can submit photos to the Silver Star website througout the bike park season and the top three pictures win great prizes from Dakine and new partner Smith.

“There’s a lot of great photographers out there who shoot for fun, thankfully,” joked Tim Fitzgerald, communications manager for Silver Star and professional photographer. “It’s obvious from the submissions we receive that they’re not new to photography. Great angles, great composition, and great perspective make this a fun contest.”

The challenge runs from June 24 to Silver Star’s final weekend of riding, Sept. 19. Prizes include a Dakine Reload camera bag, Dakine clothing and hats, and new this summer, goggles and sunglasses from Smith.

“Dakine have been great partners in this contest and now hav-ing Smith on board only makes it better,” says Ian Galbraith, sum-mer operations manager for Silver Star. “Now its up to our riders to show us what they have.”

The contest is free to enter and full details are available at www.skisilverstar.com

elevate your fitness

They’re worth more than your first used car and require just as much care. Today’s mountain bikes are a marvel of technology that push the limits of wear and tear.

Today’s mountain Bikes are built to take much more punish-ment than their prede-cessors of even just five years ago.

But like any off-road vehicle, there are go-ing be the inevitable repairs and much-needed tune-ups.

“You wouldn’t spend that kind of money on a car or boat and not maintain it,” says Cam Forbes, rentals manager for Silver Star and lead bike tech-

nician for Silver Star’s Double Diamond Service Shop. “Your mountain bike is no different. Ride hard, play safe, and drop

by anytime.”Forbes and his team

will be the exclusive on-mountain service and repair shop this summer.

Forbes has spent the better part of the last 15 years engrossed in the mountain bike industry and has an extensive knowledge relating to

maintenance and bike repairs.Double Diamond is open

seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Every Wednesday, the repair and service shop is open until 8 p.m. for Extended Play.

Silver Star Mountain Resort is home to a number of elite athletes preparing for competition. This past winter saw the world’s best Nor-dic athletes training at Silver Star in preparation for the 2010 Olym-pics and Paralympics in Vancouver. The results — 98 medals.

Silver Star Nordic manager Glenn Bond is taking that same basic approach top-tier athletes use and applying them to his Summer Fitness Camps.

Participants can choose between a two-day or five-day camp, starting August 14 and running until August 20.

“The camps are geared for people just beginning an exercise pro-gram as well as those with an intermediate level of fitness,” says Bond, a self-admitted fitness junkie. “The aim to improve your health, advance your physical and mental well-being, lose and maintain weight, but most importantly, ensure you enjoy the process.”

Bond said a big part of why so many people quit exercising is be-cause it feels more like work than play. He said he hopes the camps will change that.

The two-day camp runs Aug. 14/15 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and includes a five-point fitness test, 2.5 hours of monitored exercise, a gym pass for the exercise equipment, sauna, showers, and change rooms. The five-day camps starts Aug. 16 an includes all of the above.

Both camps include lunch daily and every participant receives a SUUNTO T1C Heart Rate Monitor worth $150.

To sign up or for more info call Glenn Bond at 250-558-6085.

put some dazzlein your shopping

Don’t let the name fool you, this summer’s hottest fashions and bike park accessories are at Ski Dazzle.

“Whether it’s Oakley, Fox, Roxy, Smith, or Dakine, we have it all,” says Brad Simon, manager of Ski Dazzle. “Plus we have lots of great logo merchandise for souvenirs.”

The retail store is stocked with a wide variety of mountain bike gear to enhance your riding experience. Bike jerseys, gloves, helmets and goggles are all big sellers. In addition, the latest sunglasses from Oakley and Smith will be featured.

“There’s a perception that because we’re a mountain store our prices are going to be way higher,” notes Simon. “It’s not the case. We do our homework so that our prices are comparable to shops throughout the Okanagan.

While the mountain bike crowd is well taken care of, those looking for a gift to remember their visit to the mountain are also well served. Everything from postcards to picture frames are available. The store will also serve as the local candy and cold drink spot.

“You can walk in here and totally outfit yourself for the moun-tain bike season, buy a postcard to send to mom, pick up your brother a T-shirt, and cool off with a cold drink. It’s the perfect one-stop on-mountain shop,” says Simon.
