VSC steps into a new year and into a new environment. After four years of working under the stimulating guidance of the Hercules Foundation, the VSC is now housed at the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders). As part of the Hercules Foundation the recent years were particularly fruitful for the VSC. During this period, a solid foundation was laid for a sustainable operation of the Flemish Supercomputer Center: there was a recurrent an-nual funding for staff and operational costs for the Tier-2s and Tier-1, the first Flemish supercomputer was purchased and is operated successfully. Also the funding for the se-cond Flemish supercomputer was made by the Hercules Foundation and the order was made at the end of 2015. A multi-year plan was drawn up to provide a continuous re-newal of Tier-2s and the Tier-1. But also the human aspect was not forgotten. In recent years the VSC could grow into a strong collaborative group of coordinators, IT experts and users. I particularly want to thank Marc Luwel who as director of the Hercules Foundation really invested a lot of energy and work in VSC to bring it to its current level. I sincerely hope that the VSC under the FWO heads for a bright future.

VSC stapt in een nieuw jaar en in een nieuwe omgeving. Na 4 jaar te hebben gewerkt onder de stimulerende hoede van de Herculesstichting is het VSC nu ondergebracht bij het FWO (Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek). Voor het VSC, als deel van de Herculesstichting waren de voorbije jaren bijzonder vruchtbaar. In deze periode werd een vaste basis gelegd voor een duurzame werking van het Vlaams Supercomputer Centrum: er kwam een terugkeren-de jaarlijkse financiering voor personeel en operationele kosten voor de Tier-2s en de Tier-1, de eerste Vlaamse su-percomputer werd aangekocht en met succes uitgebaat. Ook de financiering voor de tweede Vlaamse supercompu-ter werd gedaan door de Herculesstichting en de bestelling gebeurde nog in 2015. Een meerjarenplan werd opgemaakt om te voorzien in een continue vernieuwing van Tier-2s en de Tier-1. Maar ook het menselijk aspect werd niet vergeten. De voorbije jaren kon het VSC uitgroeien tot een hechte sa-menwerkende groep van coördinatoren, IT experten en gebruikers. Ik wil in het bijzonder Marc Luwel bedanken, die als direc-teur van de Herculesstichting heel veel energie en werk geïnvesteerd heeft in het VSC om het tot het huidige ni-veau te brengen. Voorwoord Foreword

Sinds 1 januari biedt het Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onder-zoek – Vlaanderen (FWO) onderdak aan de financiering van grote onderzoeksinfrastructuur, waarin ook alle program-ma’s die voordien bij de Herculesstichting waren onderge-bracht, hun plaats vinden. Om deze nieuwe programma’s in goede banen te leiden, werd het FWO-team uitgebreid met een aantal nieuwe collega’s die de afgelopen jaren veel ervaring hebben opgebouwd met het beheer van deze programma’s in hun respectievelijke instellingen. Voor het VSC zullen Caroline Volckaert als adviseur en Sandra Willen als dossierbeheerder zich binnen het FWO verder blijven inzetten om alles in goede banen te leiden. Deze conti-nuïteit is voor ons zeer belangrijk: we willen immers dat de onderzoekers in Vlaanderen zonder enige hinder verder gebruik kunnen maken van de infrastructuur en ondersteu-ning die het VSC in de afgelopen jaren aangeboden heeft voor zowel Tier-1 als Tier-2.

Dankzij deze nieuwe programma’s kan het FWO de onder-zoekers van Vlaanderen een nog uitgebreidere waaier aan financieringsmogelijkheden aanbieden. Ook hiervoor willen we ons blijven inspannen om de onderzoeker op de eerste plaats te zetten. Het FWO is en wil een onderzoekersvrien-delijke organisatie zijn, dit is de basislijn van de hele wer-king. Samen met het hele FWO-team zullen we ook het VSC nauwgezet opvolgen en verdedigen, met inspraak van de gebruikers, om de onderzoekers optimaal te ondersteunen, zodat ze zich in alle vrijheid kunnen wijden aan hun onder-zoek.

As of January 1 the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) has been made responsible for all funding of large infra-structures for research, including all programmes previous-ly managed by the Hercules Foundation. To bring about this transition and continue the successful management of these funding instruments, the FWO team has been en-larged with new colleagues who have acquired the neces-sary expertise in previous years with the aforementioned programmes. Both Caroline Volckaert, as advisor, and San-dra Willen, as file administrator, will follow up the existing VSC agenda within the FWO. This continuity is very im-portant to us: it is our explicit aim to offer researchers in Flanders at least the same access to infrastructures and an equally high level of support as VSC has offered for the Tier-1 and Tier-2 up to now.

With these ‘new’ programmes – at least for FWO – we can offer an even more comprehensive funding portfolio to researchers, and for us, at FWO, the researchers come first. We have always been a researcher-friendly organisation, and we are determined to continue that way. Together with the entire FWO team, we will follow-up and support also these new funding programmes including VSC, while encouraging user involvement, to create the optimal envi-ronment for researchers to perform the research they strive for.

Adaptation of the rules for requests for Tier-1 use

Het reglement voor de aanvraag van rekentijd op de Tier-1 werd aangepast om de veranderingen in de organisatie van het VSC en het toekomstig gebruik van de nieuwe Tier-1 weer te geven:

Het FWO is nu de verantwoordelijke instelling voor het VSC;

In de 2e helft van dit jaar wordt de nieuwe Tier-1, geïnstalleerd in de KU Leuven, in gebruik genomen.

Vanaf 1 januari 2016 zullen er geen kosten meer verbon-den zijn aan de rekentijd die verkregen wordt met de nieu-we aanvragen in 2016.

Op 17 november werd het nieuwe VSC Tier-1 systeem aangekondigd. De financiering van 5.5 miljoen euro voor deze ma-chine werd gedragen door de Herculesstichting van de Vlaamse Overheid onder de bevoegdheid van het Vlaams Ministerie van wetenschap en innovatie. De supercomputer wordt ontwikkeld en uitgebaat in samenwerking met het Vlaams Super-computer Centrum (VSC), een samenwerkingsverband tussen de vijf Vlaamse universitaire associaties.

Via een publieke aanbestedingsprocedure werd de firma NEC geselecteerd om de machine te bouwen. Het nieuwe sys-teem zal een piek performantie hebben van meer dan 600 teraflops, geleverd door 580 compute nodes uitgerust met de nieuwste generatie Intel processoren en verbonden door een Mellanox EDR infiniband netwerk. Dit resulteert in een ver-drievoudiging van de rekenkracht van de eerste Vlaamse Tier-1. Het systeem beschikt ook over een opslagsysteem dat dubbel zo snel is en ook de geheugencapaciteit per node is verdubbeld.

Met de toegenomen mogelijkheden van de machine zullen wetenschappers meer gedetailleerde modellen kunnen bereke-nen: modellen met fijnere resoluties, met meer complexe interacties binnen en buiten het model, grotere parameterruim-tes kunnen onderzocht worden… . Het nieuwe systeem is een belangrijke schakel in het proces om het Vlaamse onderzoek naar nieuwe hoogten te tillen.

Deze nieuwe Tier-1 zal geïnstalleerd worden aan en beheerd worden door KU Leuven. De verschuiving van UGent naar KU Leuven heeft een zeer beperkte impact voor de Tier-1 gebruikers. Dankzij de VSC “common user environment” zullen ge-bruikers zich snel thuis voelen op deze machine. Er wordt verwacht dat de eerste testen zullen starten in juni. Tegen okto-ber 2016 moet de nieuwe Tier-1 volledig klaar zijn voor productiewerk. De overlappende periode van 6 maanden tussen het oude en nieuwe Tier-1 systeem zal de huidige Tier-1 gebruikers in staat stellen om de nieuwe omgeving uitgebreid te testen en te valideren zonder het onderzoekswerk te onderbreken. Onderzoekers die momenteel geen Tier-1 gebruikers zijn, zullen ook de kans krijgen om piloot projecten in te dienen.

De nieuwe Tier-1

On November 17, 2015 a new VSC Tier-1 system was announced. The funding of 5.5 million euros for this machine was provided by the Hercules Foundation of the Flemish Government under the authority of the Flemish Ministry of science and innovation. The supercomputer will be developed and operated in collaboration with the Flemish Supercomputer Cen-ter (VSC), a collaboration between five Flemish associations.

Via a public tender procedure, the company NEC was selected to build the machine. The new system will have peak perfor-mance of more than 600 teraflops, which is delivered by 580 compute nodes with the latest generation of Intel CPU’s con-nected through a Mellanox EDR Infiniband network. This will result in three times the computing power of the first Flemish Tier-1. The system will also offer a two times faster storage system and double the memory per node.

With the increased capabilities of the new Tier-1, scientists will be able to calculate more detailed models: models with finer resolution, more complex interactions within and outside the model, larger parameter spaces can be explored .... The new system is an important link in the process of lifting the Flemish research to new heights.

The next Tier-1 will be housed and operated by KU Leuven. The shift from UGent to KU Leuven will have little impact for Tier-1 users. Thanks to the VSC common user environment users will immediately feel at home. First tests are expected to start in June. By October 2016 the machine must be fully available for production work. The 6 months overlapping period between the two Tier-1 systems will give to current Tier-1 users the flexibility to test and validate the new environment without halting their production work. Researchers that are not yet Tier-1 users will also get the opportunity to submit pilot projects.

2de VSC Industry Day — 14 april 2016

Eén van de opdrachten van het VSC is het stimuleren van bedrijven om HPC infrastructuur te gebruiken voor het ontwikke-len van nieuwe producten of diensten en hen hierin te ondersteunen. Om hieraan invulling te geven zet het VSC tal van initiatieven op.

Na de succesvolle eerste VSC Industry Day van januari 2015, werd, op advies van de Industrial Board en de HPC coördina-toren, beslist om op 14 april 2016 een tweede editie te organiseren. Op dit evenement zullen de eerste Vlaamse succes-verhalen centraal staan. Het voorzitterschap van deze dag wordt opnieuw waargenomen door Colin Whitehouse.

Informatie over het programma en inschrijven voor deze 2de VSC Industry Day zal gegeven worden op de VSC website en de uitnodiging zal via e-mail verstuurd worden.

2nd VSC Industry Day — 14 April 2016

Stimulating companies to use HPC to develop new products and services and to increase the quality of existing offerings, is a mission of the VSC. Numerous actions are set up to bridge the gap between HPC and companies.

In January 2015 the VSC organized the first Industry Day. As a follow-up of this successful event and after consulting the Industry Board and the HPC coordinators, the Hercules Foundation Board of Directors decided to organize a second edition on the 14th of April 2016. This will be the right opportunity to present the first success stories of Flemish companies. Colin Whitehouse has accepted to chair this event.

Information about the program and the registration will be made available on the VSC website and invitations will be sent by e-mail.

The PRACE Summer of HPC is a PRACE outreach and training programme that offers summer placements at top HPC cen-tres across Europe to late-stage undergraduates and early-stage postgraduate students. Up to twenty top applicants from across Europe will be selected to participate. Participants will spend two months working on projects related to PRACE technical or industrial work and produce a report and a visualisation or video of their results. Hence the programme affords participants the opportunity to learn and share more about PRACE and HPC.

The programme will run from 4 July to 31 August 2016, with a kick-off training week at Juelich Supercomputing Centre attended by all participants. Flights, accommodation and a stipend will be provided to all successful applicants. Two prizes will be awarded to the participants who produce the best project and best embody the outreach spirit of the programme.

Applications are welcome from all disciplines. Previous experience in HPC is not required, as training will be provided. Some coding knowledge is a prerequisite but the most important attribute is a desire to learn, and share, more about HPC. A strong visual flair and an interest in blogging, video blogging or social media are desirable. Project outlines with more detailed prerequisites and more information on applying are available on the PRACE Summer of HPC website www.summerofhpc.prace-ri.eu.

Op 30 november 2015 vond de tweede VSC Gebruikersdag plaats. Deze editie ging door aan de Universiteit Antwerp-en. Voor het gevarieerde programma, samengesteld door de Gebruikerscommissie, schreven meer dan 90 deelnem-ers zich in. Zowel de voor- als de namiddag waren opge-bouwd rond hetzelfde stramien: een plenaire sessie ge-volgd door een keuze uit één van de 4 workshops.

In de lezing "High performance and multiscale computing: blood, clay, stars and humans" legde Derek Groen "multiscale computing" uit en toonde hoe hij dit in verschil-lende onderzoeksdomeinen heeft toegepast.

In de namiddag liet Johan Meyers ons in "High-performance computing of wind farms in the atmospheric boundary layer" kennismaken met simulaties van windmo-lenparken. Vervolgens heeft hij een kijk gegeven op de in-house ontwikkelde code en de parallellisatie ervan.

Op het einde stelden onderzoekers hun HPC gerelateerd onderzoek voor in een postersessie, waarvoor het publiek via 1 minuut-presentaties warm werd gemaakt. Deze aanpak heeft ermee voor gezorgd dat vele deelnemers duidelijk geïnteresseerd waren voor de talrijke posters.

On November 30, 2015, the second VSC Users Day took place at the University of Antwerp. More than 90 persons registered for a varied programme, put together by the Users Committee. Both the morning and afternoon ses-sions were similar: a plenary session followed by a choice of 4 workshops.

In the morning lecture "High performance and multiscale computing: blood, clay, stars and humans" Derek Groen explained "multiscale computing" and showed us how he applies it in different research domains.

In the afternoon Johan Meyers introduced us to the simula-tion of wind farms in his lecture "High-performance com-puting of wind farms in the atmospheric boundary layer". He has also given us an inside view on the in-house devel-oped code and its parallellisation.

At the end researchers presented their HPC related re-search in a poster session. They first made the public en-thusiastic for it during 1 minute poster presentations. This approach clearly inspired the audience to take a look at the posters and start a discussion.

e-Infrastructuren in België zijn beschikbaar op federaal of regionaal niveau: het netwerk en rekeninfrastructuren. Maar hoe zit het met de gegevens? Zijn onderzoekers, onderzoeksinstellingen en onderzoeksprojecten op de hoogte van de bestaande e-infrastructuren en diensten en hun inbedding in een groter Europees kader? Zijn onze Belgische e-infrastructuurdiensten een antwoord op de e-behoeften van Belgische onderzoekers? En hoe zit het met de duurzaamheid? Beleidsmakers en financiersinstellingen moeten begrijpen dat een duurzame e-infrastructuur een absolute noodzaak is. Georganiseerd in een samenwerking tussen Belspo, EWI, SPW, Belnet, CÉCI, CENAERO en VSC, ging de "e-infrastructures in Belgium” nader in op de hierboven ge-noemde vragen.

De volgende conclusies werden getrokken:

Netwerken en reken e-infrastructuren zijn meestal be-

schikbaar maar oplossingen voor gegevensopslag zijn nog

steeds een uitdaging.

e-Infrastructuur aanbieders moeten zich ervan bewust zijn dat de onderzoekers deel uitmaken van de e-infrastructuur en dat verschillende onderzoekers zeer uiteenlopende be-hoeften kunnen hebben. Samenwerking tussen alle belanghebbenden (de e-infrastructuur dienstverleners, onderzoekers, onderzoeksgemeenschappen, onderzoeksinfrastructuren, financieringsinstellingen en overheden) is noodzakelijk en moet worden aangemoedigd. Duurzaamheid van de e-infrastructure is uitermate be-langrijk. e-Infrastructuren hebben een terugkerende finan-ciering nodig om de upgrade van hun apparatuur te plan-nen en om te kunnen voldoen aan de nieuwe behoeften van de gebruikers. Financieringsinstellingen en overheden moeten dit verzoek ter harte nemen. Bewustmaking van het bestaan van e-infrastructuren en de bijbehorende diensten moet worden opgevoerd. Deze eerste editie van "e-infrastructuren in België" kan het startsein zijn voor de opvolging van de vooruitgang die ge-boekt wordt in de besproken uitdagingen.

e-Infrastructures in Belgium are available at federal or re-

gional level: network and computing infrastructures. But

what about the data? Are researchers, research institutions

and research projects aware of the existing e-

infrastructures and services and their embedding in a larg-

er European framework?

Are our Belgian e-infrastructures services an answer to the

e-needs of Belgian researchers?

And what about the sustainability? Policy makers and fund-

ing agencies need to understand that a sustainable e-

infrastructure environment is a must.

Organised in a collaboration between Belspo, EWI, SPW,

Belnet, CÉCI, CENAERO and VSC, the “e-Infrastructures in

Belgium” day addressed the above issues.

The following conclusions were drawn:

Networking and computing e-infrastructures are rather

widely available but solutions for data storage are still a

challenge.

e-Infrastructure providers have to be aware that research-

ers are part of the e-infrastructure and that different re-

searchers can have very different needs.

Collaboration between all e-infrastructure stakeholders (e-

infrastructure service providers, researchers, research

communities, research infrastructures, funding agencies

and governments) is a must and should be encouraged.

Sustainability of the e-infrastructures is very important. e-

Infrastructures need recurrent funding to plan the upgrade

of their equipment and to be able to cope with new user

demands. Funding agencies and governments should up-

take this request.

Awareness of the existence of e-infrastructures and the

associated services has to be raised.

This first edition of "e-Infrastructures in Belgium" might be

a start to follow up the progress made on these main is-

sues.

In VSC Echo willen we telkens een deel van de VSC website belichten. In dit nummer gaat onze aandacht uit naar de “User portal”. Op de volgende pagina’s ziet u scherm-afbeeldingen van achtereenvolgens de startpagina zelf en "Access and data transfer".

De documentatie is opgesplitst in 3 delen: toegang vragen ("Preparing to use the clusters"), verbinding maken ("Getting on the clusters") en de infrastructuur gebruiken ("Using the clusters").

De populaire pagina’s worden afzonderlijk vermeld bo-venaan de pagina, alsook enkele onderwerpen specifiek gericht op nieuwe gebruikers.

Logo’s rechts laten zien voor welke infrastructuur de pagi-na van toepassing is en voor welke clients (zie bv. access and data transfer).

Na inloggen met de grijze knop bovenaan de pagina, wordt bijkomende informatie zichtbaar.

Op de startpagina wordt dan de huidige status van de ma-

chines getoond. En wordt ook de mogelijkheid geboden om

meer uitgebreide informatie te raadplegen: beschrijving

van problemen en wanneer ze opgelost zijn, maar ook ge-

plande "downtimes".

In VSC Echo, we will highlight different parts of the VSC website. We focus on “User portal” in this edition. The fol-lowing pages will show you the starting page and "Access and data transfer".

The documentation is divided in 3 parts: requesting access ("Preparing to use the clusters"), setup the connection ("Getting on the clusters") and work on the cluster ("Using the clusters").

The most popular pages are highlighted at the top of the page. Also topics targeted at new users are put there.

Logos at the right hand side show for which clusters the page is relevant and which clients are involved (see exam-ple page "access and data transfer").

When you login (using the gray button on top, the same

way as on the account.vscentrum.be website), you get ad-

ditional information.

On the starting page, the current system state is shown.

You can also get access to more detailed information: de-

scription of (past) problems and when they’re resolved, but

also scheduled maintenance windows.
