R-Factor:A measure of the resistance of the insulated glass
unitto heat flow. A high R-Factor window has a greater resistance
toheat flow and thus, a higher insulating value than a window with
alow R-Factor.
U-Value: A measure of the rate of non-solar heat loss or
gainthrough a material or assembly. Tests are usually performed
underconditions which simulate 0 outside and 70 inside with a 15
MPHwind. The lower a U-Value, the greater a windows resistance
toheat flow and thus the better its insulating value. Also, the
U-Valuecan be determined as the inverse of the R-Factor. For
example a
window with V Seal AGE-3 with a R-factor of 5, has a U-Value
of.20 (15= .20).
Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient (SHGC):The fraction of
solarradiation admitted through a window including what is
absorbedand subsequently released inward. The lower a windows
SHGC,the less solar heat it transmits and the greater its shading
ability.
Ultra Violet Light:The invisible rays of the light spectrum
atits short-wavelength violet end. U.V. Rays are found in
everydaysunlight and can cause fading and damage to paint,
carpet,furniture and fabrics.
These important factors should be weighed when choosingwindows
for your home. They all interact with one another tocreate a
harmonious product that is right for you.
For instance, V Seal Plus combines high visible light
percentageswith an R-4 insulating value. It is a great balance of
performanceand value. However, for those customers seeking
maximuminsulating power, our V Seal Max offers an insulating factor
of
R-10.
When you look at V Seal Max, at a phenomenal R-10 you maynote
that it only transmits 57% of the visible light. This tells youthat
windows with V Seal Max will have a much darker tint thanthose with
V Seal Plus. It is best to see actual samples beforemaking your
choice.
Visible Light: This is the fraction of the visible spectrum of
lightweighted by the sensitivity of your eyes that is transmitted
throughthe window. Simply put, it represents the amount of daylight
thatthe window lets in.
IMPORTANT TERMS TO UNDERSTAND
Choosing the right glass for your window means
choosing the right insulating glass (I.G.) unit. An
I.G. unit contains two (or three) panes of glass
and a spacer that holds the panes together
creating an insulating air space. Similar to the
engine in a car, the I.G. unit determines much of
a windows performance.
