Common Questions about the Audition
Although CCAA’s primary intake years are for grades 7 and 9, we do audition all grade levels. Our wait list expires at the end of
September in each school year.
Q. What should I include in my portfolio?
A. All candidates for grade 7 through grade 12, are asked to complete all of the art projects outlined in the portfolio requirements
sheets available on line at http://cardinalcarteracademyforthearts.tcdsb.org
There are 7 specific pieces to be created. The submitted portfolio includes printed photos of each art piece collated in a folder. Please
ensure the images are max 300 dpi (high quality photos) and approximately 6 x 8 inches. Incomplete portfolios will not be considered.
Please read through the details of each project carefully and what is required from each candidate.
Q. What happens in round one?
A. All of the applications and portfolios submitted will be reviewed and assessed by the adjudicating panel. Technical skill, conceptual
and theoretical approaches, and individual responses to the creative challenges are considered. The strongest candidates will be
invited to round 2 held on audition day.
Q. What happens in round two (on audition day)?
A. All successful candidates who are invited to Round 2 must bring in the original 7 works of art created for the portfolio. Students will
take part in a studio workshop that will require on-site drawing. This is followed by an interview and presentation of their actual portfolio
pieces. All candidates will also take part in an art appreciation/critique activity. Applicants will be asked to bring in additional items to
share on that day (details will be mailed out with the invitation). Candidates who do not bring in their original portfolio art works created
for the audition will be disqualified.
Q. Will I get my original art works back?
A. Print portfolios for round 1 and some workshop activities in round 2 will remain CCAA property. Yes – all original art works will be
returned to each applicant on the day of auditions after the interview.
Q. Can I get help to create my portfolio? Do I need private lessons?
A. We encourage you to seek opinions, however all work must be solely created by the candidate. A declaration form is to be signed
when submitting the portfolio. Discrepancies in candidate’s work during round 1 and round 2 will be noted. Understandably, there may
be assistance in the documenting and printing of the art pieces for submission to round 1. Private lessons are not a requirement.
Please note that we do not endorse any private studios nor their claim of ensuring the candidates’ success through our
audition process.
The Ideal Visual Arts Candidate Is:
Open minded and willing to explore diverse themes, media and techniques that span historical and contemporary genres.
Motivated, dedicated and passionate about the creative process.
Prepared and organized with good time management skills to balance the demands of the art program and academic courses.
Eager to share his/her work with others both in the studio and with the greater community.
Has a strong NEED to create and craves a deeper understand of the historical, theoretical and technical aspects of art.
