Breathtaking buildings Leeds is famous for its spectacular Victorian arcades – Queens Arcade, Thornton’s Arcade, Grand Arcade and the magnificent Victoria Quarter, all awash with history but each with their own unique atmosphere and identity. Strolling through the city you’ll come across the iconic Leeds Town Hall, Leeds Civic Hall and Leeds Central Library,
a Gothic masterpiece with spectacular staircases, archways and mosaic tiling.
To see more Victorian gems, a visit to Europe’s largest indoor market, Kirkgate Market, and the magnificent Corn Exchange are a must; both buildings are Grade 1 listed and steeped in the history of Leeds.

Abstract sculpture and
historical figures are among
numerous pieces that
give Leeds a unique urban
landscape. Street art has
made a splash in recent
years, bringing a burst of
colour to the city’s buildings,
including the UK’s tallest
mural ‘Athena Rising’ by
artists Nomad Clan.
A not-to-be-missed event
this year is Yorkshire Sculpture International. Free
and open to all, the festival
will showcase sculpture in all its forms. Featuring exhibitions and events inside the galleries at the four venues which make up the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle; Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and major new outdoor sculpture commissions from Damien Hirst in unexpected places across Leeds and Wakefield from Saturday 22 June to Sunday 29 September 2019.
Light Night is a huge fixture on the calendar, turning the entire city into an art installation, with light shows, projections, installations and lots more – a fantastic event for all the family.
That’s just one of many that take place in Leeds every year. Other festivals include Transform, Thought Bubble and Leeds International Film Festival. See even more of our festivals at the back of the guide.

Shopping HeavenLeeds is one of the UK’s best shopping destinations; you’ll find all your favourite high street names and luxury brands here, but it’s the independent shopping and markets that really sets Leeds apart.
The city’s most recent retail addition is the impressive Victoria Gate which houses one of the largest John Lewis stores in the UK. The award winning design is also home to rooftop restaurants. Equally jaw-dropping is the stunning Trinity Leeds centre with 120 shops, restaurants and an Everyman cinema.
In contrast to their modern design is the wonderful Victoria Quarter. Take time to admire the rich marbles, gilded mosaics, handsome cast and wrought iron, as well as the carved and
polished mahogany. And there are still more Victorian arcades, each with their own original features and unique charm. Explore Thornton’s Arcade, Queens Arcade, Grand Arcade and Central Arcade all within easy walking distance of each other.
Just when you think there can’t possibly be more, there is! Next door to Victoria Gate is the Kirkgate Quarter home of Leeds Corn Exchange, with its awe-inspiring domed roof, and Europe’s largest indoor market – Kirkgate Market which is an amazing heritage shopping attraction. Don’t miss the replica of the Penny Bazaar, as Leeds is, of course, the home of Marks and Spencer. Find out more at the M&S Company Archive.

LGBT+ LEEDSAs well as the annual ‘must not miss’ Leeds Pride, when thousands come to the city for a diverse line up of acts at the UK’s friendliest pride, Leeds’ LGBT+ nightlife also has a great reputation. The Freedom Quarter is a hive of activity with plenty of LGBT+ venues to choose from.
The New Penny is one of the UK’s longest running LGBT+ venues, and Leeds oldest gay bar, and is still going strong. The award-winning Viaduct Showbar will entertain you seven days a week with cabaret, live shows and DJs while Fibre will have you dancing until the small hours.
That’s just the start; other places to check out for a welcoming atmosphere and spectacular array of entertainment are Bridge Inn, Blayds Bar, Tunnel Leeds and Queens Court.
Not your average night
Call Lane is one of the more lively nightlife spots in Leeds, full of bars playing every type of music you can think of. Merrion Street is the city’s up and coming night time destination with quirky bars and hidden gems. While Greek Street is packed with Instagrammable bars.
Round up your friends for an evening of fun and games. There’s bowling at Tenpin or shuffleboard at Box Leeds, crazy golf at Junkyard Golf Club or beer pong at Roxy Ball Room. Or see if you can beat the clock at one of the city’s escape games, such as Tik Tok Unlock and Escape Hunt.
Special occasion or just fancy a flutter? The third largest casino in the UK, Victoria Gate Casino is the ultimate destination for gamers and good-timers.

Day trips from LeedsLeeds is one of the few places in the country where you can experience both a bustling, urban hub and beautiful English countryside. If you are fortunate enough to be here longer than just a weekend, Leeds provides the perfect base to explore the incredible landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and dramatic Yorkshire coastline.
Saltaire and Salts Mill – A UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its preservation as
a Victorian industrial village. Salts Mill is a place for art, dining and shopping in one stunning historic building and once inside you can admire a large collection of works by
David Hockney.
15 mins by train 30 mins by road
Haworth - A charming village surrounded by rough, brooding moorland; the very landscape
that inspired the Brontës (be sure to visit the
Brontë Parsonage Museum). Take the train from Leeds to Keighley then hop on the
Keighley Worth Valley Railway steam train to Haworth for a memorable experience
or take the Brontë Bus from Keighley train station to Haworth for a view of the area!
50 mins by train and steam train/bus 60 mins by road
Wakefield – The birthplace of renowned
sculptors Dame Barbara Hepworth and
Henry Moore. The Hepworth Wakefield is Yorkshire’s landmark gallery for the visual
arts while Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a fantastic day out for the whole family. Visit
between June and September for Yorkshire Sculpture International.
15 mins by train 40 mins by bus 40 mins by road
Yorkshire Dales Ilkley - Hop on a train to
Ilkley for a scenic walk on the famous Ilkley Moor and find the Cow and Calf rocks.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, call into
the renowned Bettys Tea Room for some quintessentially English refreshments.
25 mins by train 60 mins by bus 45 mins by road
Otley – A picturesque market town
in the beautiful countryside of Lower Wharfedale. Wander through the cobbled streets, browse independent shops and discover the town’s rich history. Hike or
cycle through the Otley Chevin Forest for stunning Wharfedale vistas from the
282-metre Surprise View summit.
45 mins by bus 40 mins by road
Yorkshire Coast - Just over an hour from Leeds by train, the Yorkshire Coast offers everything from beautiful architecture to
traditional seaside fun. Scarborough is
the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire Coast. Whitby takes a darker approach to the seaside, with tours exploring Dracula’s connection to the town. And for hidden gems, explore historic Staithes and the fantastic beach at Runswick Bay or find fossils in picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay.
