What is VU ? DefinitionsDistance Learning (DE)Distance Learning (DE)Distance Education refers to teaching and

learning situations in which the instructor and the learner are geographically separated, and therefore rely on electronic devices and print materials for instructional delivery

E-Learning = Technology-based learningE-Learning = Technology-based learningcovers a wide set of applications and processes, including computer-based learning, Web-based

learning, virtual classrooms, and cooperative learning

Online Learning = Web-based learningOnline Learning = Web-based learningconstitutes just one part of technology-based

learning and describes learning via Internet, intranet, and extranet

What is VU ? Definitions cont.Virtual University (VU)Virtual University (VU)

• VU is normally referred to as an online environment that models the process of

education and research. Therefore, VU can be considered as a web-based DE system along

with the required systems such as LMS, CMS, Digital Library, and E-Commerce to provide the required services to students, faculty and staff.

Learning Management System (LMS)Learning Management System (LMS)• (LMS) is a software application or Web-

based technology used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process.

Why Virtual University? Problems of traditional Universities

Solution offered through VirtualUniversity

Growing of educational institutes without having proper infrastructures.

No need to have a classroom and Building.

Requires a considerable amount of funding. In long run, it is very cost effective and proves to be a good revenue model.

Unable to meet new educational and learning challenges like flexible learning

It addresses to new educational challengeslike giving education-at-ease which is timeand space independent

Extra Administrative efforts Since the students are off-campus, minimaladministration

Increasing student-teacher ratio, lack of quality faculty and unattractive salary structure

No need to recruit regular faculty, VU may have a panel of good faculty from other institutes on consultancy basis since faculty need not come to traditional class.

Number of students enrolls as per theavailability of classrooms, teachers andInfrastructure.

Enrollment of students is open and can be increased to a large extent.

Linear learning approach follows non-linear approach

Virtual University over the Traditional University.

Why Virtual University? On-demand learning:On-demand learning: Instruction is available when and where the learner needs it.

Eliminating the need to wait for, or travel to, and a scheduled class. In addition, distance learning increases access to learning for the

disabled. Learner controlled: Learner controlled: Each learner is able to review topics or to skip the information they

already know. Increased motivation: Increased motivation: Students frequently report that they find technology-based interactive

learning more interesting and enjoyable than classroom lectures. Increased achievementIncreased achievement:: When corrective feedback or a learning strategy designed to help

students achieve mastery in a certain area is provided. Students often show better test results, retention, or job performance from technology-based interactive learning.

Reduced learning timeReduced learning time:: Typically 30-40 percent less time is required for learning to be achieved

compared to classroom instruction (Dennis, 1994; Kearsley, 1990)

Page 8: Virtual University :e-learning Next Generation

Why Virtual University? Better quality control: Better quality control: Learning experience in Distance Learning is more consistent and

reliable than classroom instruction.

Greater flexibility: Greater flexibility: Fluctuations in the number of learners, or their backgrounds, can be

accommodated more easily than classroom instruction.

Improved accountability:Improved accountability: Automatic collection of data on learner performance can verify that

learning has been accomplished and identify learning problems.

Faster revision:Faster revision: Learning experiences are delivered via a networked system,

simplifying the process of making changes and updates to the curriculum .

Reduced delivery costs: Reduced delivery costs: Once developed, technology-based interactive learning is likely to

cost less when compared to traditional classroom instruction.

More benefits...Higher retention of content through

personalized learning(Intelligent Tutoring Systems).

Face-to-Face Instruction via VC.Self-paced learning.Improved collaboration and interactivity

between students (cooperative learning).Access to global resources and experts.Access to media-rich learning environment.

Virtualization of University: cont. Some essential implementation steps and major requirements for virtual university aregiven below:

“Implementing virtualization process in university cannot happen overnight, it requires lot of strategy, planning, research, manpower and infrastructure”.

Funding, Policy Issues.VU research and Advisory Committee.Quality Assurance System.Administration (a variety of administrative software tools can be developed )E-learning Applications Development

Major chunk of virtualization. ODL will broadly come under one roof that is e-

learningInfrastructure:

Internet , Wi-Fi network ->m-learning. Setup of satellite facility. (Edusat,Vsat) Promoting Education Television Channel.

Virtualization of University:Some essential implementation steps and major requirements for virtual university aregiven below:

Partnerships. establishes a national education consortium for joint

course development. Extended to industry experts for enabling industry

driven learning.Resources and Course Development Team.Exploring the ICT compatible pedagogy and instructional design .(learning styles) Training. (understanding new pedagogical framework) Learning Management System. (deliver, track, report)Learner Support System. (supporting, guiding )

In Summary “The Net changes everything ,in the future,

all education will be online.”

Virtual University with the help of e-learning standards, removes time and place barriers to support new, more effective models of future learning.

Virtual university can become a reality only if we have the required laws, infrastructure, effective learning models, and correct strategy.
