There is a Hassidic tales that goes something like this “A disciple asked the Rabbi, ‘Why does the Torah tell us to ‘place these words upon your hearts’? Why does it not tell us to place these words in our hearts?’ The Rabbi answers, ‘We cannot place

words in our hearts, only God can do that. So we place them on top of our hearts. And there they stay until one day the heart breaks open and the words fall in.”

Recently I spent a week at Beit Teshuvah in LA. Beit Teshuvah is a Jewish in-patient recovery program, a place where people struggling with addiction can find a recovery program to help them adjust to life without drugs and alcohol. Open to people of all religious backgrounds, Beit Teshuvah places Jewish tradition, rabbinic wisdom, and yiddishkite front and center in its work to help and heal their residents.

It was soul moving to spend a week hearing the stories of the residents, many of whom had completely destroyed their lives with substance abuse. They had committed major crimes, ostracized or lost their families, ruined their health, and more. And yet in each of their stories there was also a consistent thread: I want to be better. I want to make amends. I want to atone for the things I’ve done. I just need one more chance.

The soft spoken and thoughtful man whom I thought was funny and charming? He was recently released from prison after serving his sentence for a violent crime he’ll never forgive himself for.

That well-dressed young woman running the front desk who loves to show off pictures of her daughter? She’s a Jewish heroin addict and in recovery for the second time after leaving to rejoin her gang.

The guy in designer shades who spouts off Hebrew terms like a pro? He’s a former yeshivah student who decided that party drugs and painkillers would bring him closer to God than study ever could.

The country gentleman telling me about how studying Abraham Joshua Heschel is changing his life? He’s a Christian who lost literally everything to his gambling addiction.

And the Rabbi who inspired the whole thing? He’ll be the first to tell you: He’s an alcoholic, a former mobster, a thief and a conman. But he also believes in one truth above all others, because he lives it every single day. “People can change.”

That is lesson that I hope we can all take into the year 2021. That people, circumstances, and institutions: all of them are capable of true change. We have to believe that change is possible, we must hold onto the belief that tikkun (repair) can be made. It can be hard to accept, because believing that change is possible means being vulnerable to disappointment and hurt again. It might be easier to harden oneself to try and protect our sacred hearts after they have been broken. But it is not what Judaism teaches us to do, and it is not what leads us to a better world.

If 2020 was a year of heartbreak, let 2021 be a year where the words of forgiveness, healing, and love fall in. Ken Yihi Ratzon, may our desires align with the will of the divine.

Recovering Our Broken Hearts

Mini ShabbatSaturday, January 9 @ 9:30 amJoin us for a celebration of the trees in honor of Tu B’Shvat! We will get a chance to grow like a tree and hear a great story from our puppet friends about planting trees. Maybe you’ll even grab a pot, some dirt, and some seeds, and plant something with us!

As always, no need to RSVP. Just jump on and join us, even in your PJs! Questions? Email Rabbi Lydia Medwin at [email protected].

Annual Tu B’Shvat Tree PlantingSunday January 31 • 1:00-4:00pm Location: Along John Lewis Freedom Parkway—honoring the late congressman and civil rights hero, John Lewis. Registration is open at: https://werepair.org/atlanta/?popupId=7013s000000JuUfAAKJoin the Atlanta Jewish community as we celebrate the Jewish New Year of the trees. Following Trees Atlanta’s protocols, we’ll be working in family groups or as individuals, safely separated and masked. Trees Atlanta provides the trees, tools and expertise, we spread tree roots into fertile ground, giving trees a place to flourish. This year, there will be NO refreshments or schmoozing, NO children’s programming, but YES—opportunities to do a Mitzvah safely, and YES—the same satisfaction of growing Atlanta’s tree canopy.

As another option, plant your own trees: You are encouraged to purchase fruit trees from The ALFI Orchard Project (a collaboration between Community Farmers Markets, Concrete Jungle, and Food Well Alliance) at https://fruittreesale.com/the-orchard-project. ALFI (the Atlanta Local Food Initiative) offers free classes in planting and caring for fruit trees!

Each of these is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the Jewish New Year of the trees and to green our city—in spite of COVID!

Sparking Positive Jewish Identities OnlineThis past semester at the Breman Education Center was filled with tons of interactive, fun, and exciting learning all online! Hundreds of students have logged in each week to Zoom rooms filled with Judaic and Hebrew learning led by dedicated faculty and teen leaders all working from home. Our goal is to create the most interactive, fun and exciting learning program with the magic of digital learning and the highest standards of Jewish education.

The BEC has hosted national and international specialists like Marilyn Price, puppeteer and storyteller, and Ellen Allard, musician, along with instructors of Krav Maga, Yoga, and Jewish cooking. We have also reimaged all our family education programming for the online platform including creating a real online store to select Jewish values and have taken families back in time with custom video presentation.

The BEC has also added small, outdoor events for kids to connect with each other in person. Movie night, card making for our Temple members and Confirmation class are just a few of the reason our children and teens have gathered safely outside at The Temple.

While we eagerly await the time when we are able to safely learn together in our building again, we will continue our mission in new and innovative ways of sparking positive Jewish identity within each child and teen in our program at home and safely outside.

TOP LEFT: Marilyn Price, Chicago-based storyteller and puppeteer, leads class online. BOTTOM LEFT: Behind the scenes as a kindergartner paints her ark in preparation for Consecration. TOP RIGHT: Learning online is a blast at the BEC! BOTTOM RIGHT: Our 4th & 5th graders meet safely outside to prepare Chanukah cards for our Temple members who are home bound.

“I’m Not Dying With You Tonight”A Racial Justice Program for 8th-12th Graders with Special Guest and Author Gilly SegalSunday, January 24 • 11:00am-12:00pmYour clergy, board, and Project Justice teen leaders would like to invite you to join our discussion group with Gilly Segal, author of “I’m Not Dying With You Tonight,” whose very real, provocative, and insightful conversations about race and white supremacy are exactly what this moment calls for. As it turns out, our author, Gilly Segal, is a Temple member and the mother of one of your classmates. Her novel has received rave reviews from critics, become a New York Times bestseller, and been nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

We encourage you to purchase the book. If cost is prohibitive, we can provide assistance - just let us know!

Our hope is that you’ll read the book (it’s a very quick read), so that you can join our discussion and get the most out of it. But feel free to join even if you don’t get a chance to read – the session will be discussion based and designed for you to get the most out of it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please be in touch with Rabbi Lydia Medwin at [email protected], or board member Sara Loft at [email protected].

Caring at The TempleOur Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during times of hardship or pastoral need, providing homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We have delivered more than 500 soups, and nearly every step of the program—from soup preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us know about fellow congregants in need—is led by members of our congregation.

To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah of bikkur cholim (visiting the sick) or to let us know who needs soup, please contact Rabbi Lydia Medwin at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

Did you know The Temple has a podcast?Rabbi Berg and Rabbi Lapidus host this weekly conversation that covers topics of Jewish interest, features interviews with members of our Atlanta community, and gives some insight into what happens “behind the scenes” for our clergy and Temple. We have conversations with Rabbi Alvin and Barbara Sugarman, Tomer Zvulun of the Atlanta Opera, Adrianne Hamilton-Butler of the Zaban Paradies Center, and many more! All of our episodes are available on Apple podcast, Spotify, and at anchor.fm/thetempleatl
