Ways of Asking – Instructor: Alayne MacArthur

Effective questioning is both technique and art. When used well, questions provoke learner thinking and develop true

understanding of content and process. In this workshop we will learn about the different kinds of questions we should ask to

stimulate the type of thinking we want to promote, skills for putting questions and handle responses, and strategies that generate

more questions from learners. As a result of this workshop, you will sharpen your questioning skills and create a inquiry based

Assessing Student Learning in the Prevention Education Classroom - Instructor: Alayne MacArthur

Assessment answers the question, “How do I know that my students have learned what I intended to teach?” It also provides

students with feedback about their successes and next steps. It is an opportunity for both teacher and students to measure success

and identify areas for improvement. Effective assessment not only improves the skills of teachers and learners, but the overall

performance of programs. Assessment methods are also critical for establishing program effectiveness to funders and other

stakeholders.

Key Learning Objectives:

Explore the components of effective assessment and a variety of assessment methods for health and prevention education

programs

Examined the principles and practices for creating effective learning assessment tools

Practice the principles and practices of assessment design by creating an assessment tool

Acquired an assessment design template and model which can be transferred and applied to their own setting

Classrooms That Work - Instructor: Alayne MacArthur

No matter what the setting - a school classroom or community center gym- a mismanaged learning environment is frustrating for

learner and facilitator. As a result of this work shop you will engage in conversations and activities with your peers to practice

research based strategies for classroom management. Specific topics to be explored include: rules and procedures, disciplinary

interventions, teacher-student relationships, mental set, the student's responsibility for management, getting off to a good start,

and management at the school level.

Due to its intensive nature, this is a two day workshop. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to join an

online learning community to continue to share strategies, engage in reflective practice exercises, receive support and feedback

from one another, and additional readings and tips from the workshop facilitator.

However, implementing with fidelity can be a challenge in real world settings. In this workshop participants will explore

definitions and standards of fidelity, discuss the most common obstacles to fidelity based implementations, identify the fidelity

elements of a program that are essential to achieve desired results, and explore the types of adaptations and modifications that

preserve fidelity while accommodating local contexts.

Spice Up Your Prevention Program: Teaching Strategies and Activities for Engagement - Instructor: Alayne MacArthur

Program facilitators often hear their students say “this program is boring!” And the natural response is to find appropriate ways

“spice up” your program. However, as an educator you must balance making an activity fun while at the same time ensuring it is

effective and salient. One way of approaching this situation is to think like a child! This session invites participants to approach

the delivery of prevention, cessation and intervention activities in ways that engage learners on multiple levels, enhances the

durability of the learning, and increases the likelihood that what is experienced in the classroom will be transferred and applied to

solve real world challenges. Participants will be able to use these fun and innovative techniques when delivering any type of

prevention or cessation/intervention program

Key Learning Objectives:

Examine instructional techniques and activities to deliver prevention, cessation and intervention activities in ways that

engage adolescent learners on multiple levels

Enhance the durability of the learning and increase the likelihood that what is experienced in the classroom will be

transferred and applied to solve real world challenges

Share ideas and techniques with one another through discussion and demonstration
