South African Box Office Report

The past few months have seen a distinct slowdown of growth in the South African

Box Office, especially box office revenues. The South African box office revenues

declined by 50% from R47 million recorded in the first half of 2012 to R23 million

this year 2013. This could be attributed to the deteriorating domestic spending due

to high electricity tariffs, rising petrol prices and increasing food prices which

adversely decrease consumer spending.

Since the beginning of this year, a total of 95 films have been screened at box office,

and 10 of those were local films. The majority of films screened were from the

United States of America (USA) with a total number of 60 films. This report will look

at the performance of local films at box Office, the market share by distributor,

genre classification and the origin of the films.

1. South Africa’s performance at Box Office

January saw no release of South African films at the box office. However, in

February there was an improvement with a release of 2 films Klein Karoo ~ a

romantic comedy and Verraaiers ~ a war drama and both films have done well. The

highest month of release for local films was March with a total of 4 films on circuit,

while highest month of release for international films was May with a total of 19

films. On average 14 films were released in a month from international films, and

local films produced at least 2 films a month. Overall, 10 films screened originated

from South Africa, while 85 films were international films. International films have

performed well at box office; this is depicted in Figure 1 below.

Figure 1: Number of films released per month

South Africa’s gross box office for the first six months of 2013 totalled R23 million

(for the locally produced 10 films) a 50% decrease compared to the first half of

2012. The total gross box office for all 95 films also declined by 2% from R415

million to R408 million. More SA films (10) were released this year, compared to (7)

last year. However, the increase in the volume of local films did not translate to

increased revenue as these films did not attract as many audiences.

The performance of local films at box office is still poor as international films

continue dominating the exhibition chain and appeal to the South African audience.

During the first six months of 2013, local films only managed to secure 6% of the

total box office (a decline from 11% this time last year), while international films

took 94% market share. It may be argued that the release of Leon Schuster Mad

Buddies contributed to the higher percentage market share as it grossed over R25

million on its own.

Figure 3: South Africa's share of revenue

After the huge success of the first film of the hilarious and sometimes tragic life of a

private boarding school in South Africa, the second installment titled Spud 2: The

Madness Continues did not disappoint. The film was the highest grossing local film at

R6.8 million. This was followed by Klein Karoo (a romantic comedy) which earned

R5.0 million, followed by Fanie Fourie’s Lobola which grossed R3.7 million. The least

performing film was To the Power of Anne which made a disappointing R5 072.

2. Market Share by Distributor

Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro remain the largest distributors in South Africa both with a

market share of 37% each of the total box office. With the establishment of a new

Ster-Kinekor cinema complex in the West Rand which will open at the end of

October 2013 and will boast eight fully digitised big screen projectors. It is

anticipated that there will be more exhibition platforms, thus giving films enough

theatrical window and acquire more revenue. This will definitely increase their

market share at the box office.

The balance of the market share is shared by United International Pictures (UIP)

with a market share of 23%, Indigenous Film Distributors (IFD) accounting for 2%

and Cristal Brooke (CB) at 1% of the total box office.

Figure 5: Market Share by Distributor

From the total of 95 films released in the first six months, the 2 largest distributors

took an even share of 35 films each (Nu Metro and Ster Kinekor), followed by UIP

with 21 films, IFD released 3 films and CB with only 1 film.

3. Genre Classification

Drama dominated the exhibition space in the first six months with 19 films falling

under the genre. However, in terms of revenue generated Action was the highest

earning genre at R66 million with only 6 films screened. Action titles released

included Fast and Furious, G.I Joe: Retaliation and A Good day to die hard.

Animation was the second highest grossing genre earning R54 million followed by

Action/Adventure with only 2 films which accounted for R51 million “Iron Man 3 and

Man of Steel”; Comedy took the forth place earning R47 million.

3D films are also doing exceptionally well at box office with a total of 15 3D films

screened in the first six months and a total gross from 3D screenings of over R147

million.

4. Country of Origin

The majority of films screened at the local box office were from United States of

America (USA) with a total of 60 films originating from the country. Six of the films

released originated from the United Kingdom (UK). Although South Africa and the

Page 8: Virginia Department of Social Services Early Childhood Endorsement

UK have an existing co-production treaty; none of these 6 films were made under

the treaty framework. The remaining 10 releases are South African. American films

continue to dominate the box office space.

5. Top 25 Films at SA Box Office – January to June 2013

The official Top 25 for South Africa is based on actual box office figures as received

from SA's 3 main film distributors - Ster-Kinekor Films, Nu Metro Distribution and

UIP. As shown in Table 1, the top performing films were: Fast and Furious the

highest grossing films at SA box office with earnings of over R36 million, followed by

Iron man 3, the biggest opening of 2013 at R32 million, The Croods grossing over

R20 million and Man of Steel at R18 million. Only one South African film made it to

the top 25 Spud 2: The madness continues.

6. Conclusion

Despite the decline of growth at the box office compared to the same period last

year, the NFVF is positive that performance in the second half of 2013 may improve.

Local films like Jimmy in Pienk, Nothing for Mahala, Bakgat 3, Khumba are planned

for releases which show potential for increased revenue for local films. The

marketing of these films, number of prints and theatrical windows will be the

determining factor for the success of the films.
