TI1e VAN is published quarterly, usually in February; May. August and November. Prc\·iously these issues were followed by an annual index issue. Effective with CY 1996 the annual index will be iocludcd ju the November issue of the VAN for that year or in a subsequent issue of the next year.

Society memberships are on a calendar year basis and those memberships. which are not renewed by January 30. w.ill be deemed as inactive and removed from the VAN mailing list. Single or family memberships are $20.00; Organization and Library membershjps are $15.00. Members with mailing addresses outside the United States shall add $10.00 to the above fees and all monies are payable in U.S. currency. Issues of the VAN, 1995 and earlier, are a\'aiJableat a reimbursement cost of$4.00 each> as long as the supply lasts. More recent issues are $6.00 each. Thomas Pleasants Jordan, the father of my ancestor Decorah Jordan Thomas, was torn about 1745 probably in Henrico COW1ty Virginia. In the search for his origins it seemed apparent at the onset that his might be a Quaker lineage. But no evidence emerged from the Society of Friends compiled records that this Thomas Jordan was the 'Thomas Jordan who was the son of P.enj amin Jordan . Wr itings on other 'Thomas Jordans tenrieri to "muddy the waters" . Several writings made suppositions and attempted to link: this Thomas to various Jordan l ines but failed to provide the evidence . Thus, this was a family line that I had placed on the back burner until a inquiry was received from a distant cousin ' s wife in Floyd, Virginia . That inquiry started me on a determined search.

Badcg:t0tmd and Clues

The rule of thumb in genealogical research - ''the best clues to a person ' s origins and birth family exist in the earliest proven place of residence '' became the first step in the strategy of this search. The collection of data was first centered on the reconstruction of the family of Thomas P . Jordan to try to establish those links before beginning to try to find the evidence to link him to the Quaker Benjamin Jordan, Jr . 'T'he reconstruction of the family was paramount in the strategy.

Robert Barnard Jr., a descendant , also of Deborah Jordan 'Ihcmas (Charles Thomas Jr.) had written to me, sent me material on the Quaker Jordans . I had collected other material, too, which includen a book entitled These Jordans Were Here . I discovered this lx>ok in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke Library on a vi sit there. This writing was one that provided good information about the Jordan family. However, the supposition was made that placed Thomas P. Jordan, son of Benjamin, Jr., in another Jordan fami 1 y. No clear evidence was given and this supposition subsequently proved to be incorrect.

A letter from o. E. Pilson had brought another clue. 1his was a somewhat hidden clue that I had not realized was a clue until I began to review all the material I had gat hered . His letter had the informati on that Thomas Jordan had migrated into the Blueridge Mountain area after the Revolutionary War from "near Richmond".

An answer to a query placed in The Genealogical Helper hrought material from Marilyn OWen in ca1ifornia. Her husband , also, has a Jordan line and she had collected much material frcm research in North Carolina which she sent to me.

One of the nost important clues came from Juoy Blackwell, whose husband is the descendant of Deborah Jordan Thomas. She wrote to ask if I thought the Thomas P. Jordan who sold land in Montgomery Count:y in 1798/1.799 was the father of Deborah Jordan. ?ubsequently, she made a trip to the courthouse in Montgomery County and obtained a copy of the deed. An~ this, along with other deeds , verified that this 'Thomas P. Jordan, who had migrated from the Franklin, Patrick Counties area to Buncombe County North Carolina was the father of Deborah Jordan Thomas and Mary Jordan Dehart of Patrick County.

All this infonnation, from various family history researchers, greatly assisted in giving clues as to places to search for Thomas P. Jordan prior to and preceding the Revolutionary War. As I began to reconstruct the family of Thomas P . Jordan other clues erner ge<i and the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place .

'Ibe Evidence and Links to Benjamin Jordan, Jr.

The 1787 persona l property tax lists and index of Virginia , compiled by Netti Yantis and Florence Love , provi ded t he needed assi stance in the next step in the search. 'There were a dozen Thomas Jordans listed . 'T'he "near Richmond" infonnation given by o . E. Pilson helped to narrow the location of which Thomas to choose! I don ' t know if it was sheer luck or serendipity that made me choose Hanover County - a "burned county"!

In spite of it being a burned county, I found the land t ax, personal property tax and deeds to provide the needed evi dence. Three important pieces of evidence linked 'Thomas to Benjamin Jordan, Jr . his father. One was the names of the slaves given to him by his father's will in Henrico County and listed by name for him on the personal property tax. 'T'he second piece of evidence was the name of the land, "Ginger Bread", the description, and the location listed in his father's will and in deeds. This was the land Thomas and wife susannah sold in 1787 before leaving Hanover County . The third piece of evi dence was the name of his wife SUsannah . Their marriage was in the Society of Friends compiled recor ds . Her narre was in near ly every land transaction that Thomas made.

Extension of the Line

More recent research has further e>..'"tended the line. The parents or 'Thomas Pleasants Jordan were Benjamin and Lyni a Pleasants Jordan. One of the more useful tools for thi s information has 1::een William Wade Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, the Vir ginia Volume. Goochland County Virginia deeds have given further evidence and information of Lydia Pleasant Jordan•s parents - Thomas and Mary Jordan Pl easants.

Benjamin Jordan ' s father was Benjamin Jordan, Sr. He was an elder in the Society of Friends. Hinshaw has been an useful tool for information about him. It proved to be a little m:>re complicated finding information on Benj a.min Jordan Jr. ' s mother, Sarah . A query in 'T'he Vi rginia Magazine of Genealogy brought to me Sarah's maiden name of Robinson. This information , however, was without evidence. A Jordan researcher in Georgia sent to me some pages from a genealogy that gave Sarah as the step daughter or Joseph Glaister.

A review of the Quaker literature provided me with the information that Joseph Glaister was a Quaker missionary who migratecl to American from England around 1707. He had settleCT in North Carolina. So it was bac~ to Hinshaw's writings, this time the North Carolina volume. I lmew that Sarah had married Benjamin Jordan Sr. about 1708. 'The North Carolina volUitE gave IrE further information on Joseph Glasiter and the location of his rronthly meetings in England.

Thi s information sent IrE to the Quaker Records of Englano, available on microf ilm fran the Salt take Family History Center Library. And luckily


vital recor ds for the location I wanted had teen rnicrofillned. I founrl Sarah Robinson ' s birth date, the names of her parents, and the second marriage of her mother in those listings. She was, indee~, Sarah Robinson, daughter of John and' Sarah Rohinson of Par oshaw , Cumberland England .

OJnclnsion

Linking Thomas Pleasants Jordan to his Quaker parents and heritage entailed researching much more than the published literature . It involved some complicated plans and work in many different kinds of records . This was in part because Thomas Pleasants Jordan left the Society of Friends in 1775 , during the Revolutionary War . The wonderful clues and assistance I received, though, from other ~amily history researchers, cousins and their spouses made it much li::ss work and a lot more enjoyable .

1738 orange county (became Augusta) J ames a nd Stephen Renfroe had to pay no taxes on estate because they l ive d '~over Shenandore" They lived west of the river, thusly not having to pay taxes.

1 740 Lunies (Looney) Mill was in operation by 1740 but before 1 7 4 2 he had accumulated 863 acres. A SEED BED OF THE REPUBLIC and EARLY BOTETOURT COUNTY by R. D. Stoner .

1740 February court gave leave to Stephen Rentf ro to build a mill on Looney ' s Mill Creek. IBID : p . 27

1742 Augusta County , Va. (Orange County from 1738 through 1745) Company 8 Augusta co. Militia were James Renfro a sergeant, Peter Renfro and Stephen Renfro. All lived west of the Blue Ridge on branches of the James and Roanoke Rivers. Capt. George Robinson. Also in same outfit wee Thomas and Robert Looney.

Some descendants believe that Stephen was the brother of Susannah Renfroe who was engaged to James Cole (who later moved to Virginia a nd then to North Carolina) in New Garden MM in Chester Co, PA in 1719. Other siblings are probably James Renfro, William, Mary, Peter, Joseph, and John and possibly children of John Renfro Sr. of Chester County.

1746 Peter Renfffre, looks like it could be Ruffner and one of the Augusta County historians agreed with me, but the Renfro descendants do not. WILL BOOK I PAGE 6 AUGUSTA co I VA. adm. " for chattels and grounds of Abraham Strickler and bound to John Lewis, Justice of Peace, on 1 Apri 1, 17 46. ' Both or' these men were possibly German immigrants .

1781 Peter Renfrow, b. ca. 1700 (?) was killed in Tennessee, maybe by Indians. He was the Peter who married Elizabeth Hollingsworth on 17 Sept, 1733; she was a Quaker and dismissed from the church for marrying out of unity. He is said to have had land in S. Carolina in 1748 but evidently he moved to Tenn. after 1758

1789 Botetourt County William Rentfro's probate was June, 1789; named John Targert and Patrick Lemon.

1791 Hannah Rentfro, d/o Moses married Henry Gearhart on 6 Dec, 1791 in Franklin Co, Va. REF: OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN.

July 13, 1792, Stephen Renfro was killed by Indians on Cumberl and Road near Crab Orchard, 18 miles from southwest point. He was a " member of Captain Ivan's company under Lt. McClellan in McClellan ' s repulse of the Creek Indians." This area is in current Roane County, Tennessee ; "sout hwest point" was the junction of Clinch and Holston Rivers according to Ramsey's ANNALS OF TENNESSEE and ANNALS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA . This was son o f Stephen Renfro who married Margaret Looney. his step sister.

1794 listed in Knox County, Tennessee is Stephen Renfro Sr,who died intestate, but this has to be Stephen Jr . who had a son named Stephen by that time. His estate was intestate because he had been killed by Indians. His sons were John (probably named for John Looney), David, William (both popular Looney names) and Stephen to whom he left 300 acres on Beaver Creek. Knox Deed book L 264. Wife Margaret Rentfro was granted admn. on estate of her late husband Stephen Rentfro, lade husband. Securities were John Crawford and Moses Looney (step- brother of this Stephen Renfro )

That land was then a quit claim from John Renfro who then lived in Grainger County, Tenn, Stephen, William and Dav i d (all three of Knox Co) to John Lindsay ( Knox Co. Deed books T:171 , 184; UI 247; Will 44, 128)

In the 1780 's there were a number of Rentfros listed i n Fayettte and Lincoln County , Kentucky. Benjamin Looney was i n Fayette County at the same time. had 500 acres on Indian Creek Dec 2, 1782.

The Renfro researchers theorize that old Stephen Sr ' s f irst wife may have been a VanBebber (his second wife was Marg a ret (Rhea) Looney, widow of Robert Looney Jr . who also had been killed by Indians. The Renfro family certainly had a lot of contact with the VanBebber family as they did with t he Walkers, another family who married into the Looney family, as did the Renfros.

1804 Knox county, Tennessee, "July .. . Last wil l a nd testa men t of Stephen Rentphrow , produced i n said c ounty cou r t . Will was written 12 December, 1802. His sons John and Stephen Re nfro were both deceased but he r emembered daughters Elizabeth Looney and Moses Looney "son of my belove d wife." Daughter Elizabeth had married a son of John Loone y Sr, and Moses Looney was the son of Margaret (Rhea) and Robert Looney son of Robert Looney Sr, immigrant.

My Phillips line descends from John Phillips, born 1653, Wales, England and Elizabeth Tobias. MRS. REBECCA WILSON

An accident of the most serious nature occurred, about a mile from this place , on Saturday last, which has filled our little village with sympathetic feelings of sorrow and regret . As Mrs Rebecca Wilson. consort of the late Alexander Wilson, formerly a representative of this district, with her brother, (Mr Simon Gillispie, from Kentucky) were passing from this place, on a visit to some friends, near Pattonsburg, in a Carry All, drawn it appears by a very sprightly horse ; a dog rushed from an enclosure belonging to a Mr . Ingleheart, which affrighted the animal in such a manner, as to cause him to run off, his speed was such as to render all efforts to stop him fruitless; Mr Gillispie in order to save himself, sprung from the Carry-All, by which he received several severe bruises, the horse still passing on--the lady, was at lenth precipitated, and so dreadfully hurt, that serious doubts were entertained by the physicians of this place of her recovery. A few rods from the place the horse was found with his neck broke.

We must have source of material to give credit to the person who has done the work. (3) DEADLINE for submitting material should be at least two months before date of publication . (4) PLEASE do not send material that you want returned - send a photocopy to us instead. That way it won't get lost, as letters do get misplaced, when passed from one person to another.

"WASKEY, William Christopher - Montgomery Co, VA - 1900-10 death" If this data takes more than one line or the spouse is included on the same line, it will count as two names. The limit is 1 O names. The surname index is published in the August issue.
