Tsunami Awareness Month by Ken Stone

April is Tsunami Awareness Month. It is time once again to think about your state of emergency preparedness. Do you have your 3 day emergency kit ready that contains those items you will need if you have to quickly abandon your home? Do you have at least a week’s supply of your meds packed? The Computer Club… by Parker Kendall

One of the most popular shticks of Comedian Jay Leno involves the studio audience. On a large screen Leno projects items that are of-fered for sale on EBay and the au-dience is asked to shout out Sold! or Not Sold! The items can range from a potato chip in which the

seller saw the likeness of a religious saint to the hair clip-pings of some celebrity.

Computer Club member Pat Miller not long ago showed club members the ins and out of buying and selling on EBay. “You must first register by listing a user name and then an ID,” she said, adding that it’s probably a good idea to have a separate email account to use exclusively on EBay.

Before buying anything, said Pat, “It’s a good idea to read discussion boards so that you can see the ratings of sell-ers.” And, she said, buyers may also be rated, which is a help to sellers. At one time, she pointed out, almost any payment method was accepted but these days EBay en-courages buyers to use PayPal, which EBay owns.

When looking for an item to buy, Pat suggested using EBay’s Advanced Search to narrow down the category and to see what similar items have in the past sold for.

EBay was founded in San Jose, California in 1995 by French-born Iranian computer programmer Pierre Omid-yar, who called his new website AuctionWeb. The very first item sold on eBay was a broken laser pointer (illegal to sell now) for $14.83. Omidyar contacted the winning bidder to ask if he understood that the laser pointer was broken. In his responding email, the buyer explained: "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers.”

Which proves what most people who use EBay know—you can buy or sell almost anything on the website as long as you abide by the site’s rules. One of the most unusual items sold on EBay was a Lotus Esprit sports car owned by British DJ and TV host Tim Shaw. A few years ago Shaw’s wife saw him on TV fawning over some model and, before he could get home, put his Lotus Es-prit (25,000 pounds new) up for sale on EBay for 50 pence (about $1.00) with the proviso that the car be picked up within the next two to three hours. The car sold within five minutes. Not long thereafter, Shaw made a public apology to his wife. Then he bought back his sports car—for 5,000 pounds.

Drop in on a computer club class any Wednesday. The advanced class meets at 11:10, the basic class at 1. There’s no charge and all Greentrees folks are welcome. Look for the Greentrees Computer Club web site in your search engine to find out the latest news.

We have new neighbors!

Denis and Helene Hawes have lived here for several months, but I did not meet them until recently. They bought a home on the west side which they are currently remodeling. They alternate their residences between Florence and Australia. When taking the occasional break from working on their home, they enjoy kayaking across the river and exploring the dunes.

Helene was born in France and migrated with her parents and four brothers when she was around ten to Australia. Her mother was educated at Versailles and her father was an agronomist (a specialist in areas such as crop rotation, irrigation and drainage, plant breeding, soil clas-sification, soil fertility, weed control, insect and pest con-trol)….whew! The family settled in Sidney and Helene schooled there. She became a high school teacher, and has a Masters Degree in education.

Denis was born and grew up in Brisbane. Brisbane is the capitol of Queensland and is the 3rd largest city in Austra-lia. Denis’s mother was a homemaker and his father was a house builder. He has one sister. He too became a school teacher, and later acquired his Masters in Law and became an attorney (Barrister).

They met while they were both teaching school in a small town north of Brisbane. Each had been married previ-ously and between them they have seven children and 18 grandchildren.

When they first retired, they purchased a motorhome and toured the United States for six months, taking in parts of Mexico and Canada as well.

When they returned to Australia, they again purchased a motorhome and spent the next 3 ½ years touring Austra-lia. They spent 2 years taking a full time course at the Australian School of Fine Wood at the Forest Heritage

Centre, where they both learned to design and make fine furniture. (forestheritagecentre.com) You can see some of their work at the website for the school.

Denis and Helene have visited the US several times (Denis has a son living in Arizona). On one of their trips, they vis-ited a friend and childhood classmate of Denis’s who lives in Florence. They liked the area and decided to purchase a home here.

I had lots of questions about their homeland and the couple patiently answered them. They explained that Australia is the oldest continent in the world, and the smallest. Its big-gest difference from the US is the population and the cli-mate (it is 11º south of the equator).

101st Rhododendron Festival Parade Mary Ann Jackson has graciously volunteered to chair the Rhody Parade Float Committee again this year. The theme will be Pacific Wonderland. The parade will be on May 17th. There is a signup sheet for volunteers in the Green-trees Library. The first meeting will be held in the Coffee Room on April 8th at 10:00am. We need your ideas.

Bernie Herr, Greentrees Artist Bernie Herr lives in Greentrees at Lot #205. Almost every-day he can be found in his studio, on his lot, painting, fram-ing, discussing or studying art.

Bernie paints in “Aqueous Media” which means watercolor, or other water based media. He is a man of many styles! He loves color and exploring new techniques. He has won many awards and just had a painting selected for the Wa-tercolor Society of Oregon’s 44th Annual Aqueous Exhibi-tion.

Bernie will have a one man show for the month of April, in “Gallery One of the Florence Events Center “ He would like to invite all Greentrees Residents to his opening reception on Friday April 3 from 4:30-7:30 PM.

Oregon Medical Laboratories is Moving Beginning April 6, the Florence patient service center for Oregon Medical Laboratories (where they draw the blood) will be taking up temporary residence in the Inter-nal Medicine Center on 9th street.

The City of Florence recently approved Peace Harbor Hos-pital’s proposal to locate a 5,000 square-foot building on its campus southeast of the hospital building. The building, scheduled to open in late summer 2009, will reunite the hospital lab with the Oregon Medical Laboratories (OML) patient service center currently located in the Coast Fitness Plaza. When it opens, the expanded lab and new patient service center will offer better access and capacity for hos-pital and clinic patients and area residents. In the mean time, they will be doing the blood work at the Internal Medi-cine Center on 9th street.

Bailey Speaks

I would like to welcome Jake and Eddie to the committee. They are swell guys. The first instructions given out by Booboo was to be sure the caregivers pick up.

Yes, it is the same old problem. We have a few that are ignoring their re-sponsibilities. Remember, it doesn’t matter where the deposit is left, pick it up!!

Now, this is not the message content that I intended. But we are having problems, folks. The fellow below is a dream, not reality.

Secretary’s Report March 10th Board Meeting

President Mike Grenfell called the meeting to order at 1 PM and all districts were represented. The General Manager reported that the new speed bumps had arrived and one set is available to be sure to cal the office if you think you would like one laid out. Maybe the bumps will re-mind everyone to slow down to 10 MPH. The carpeting in the clubhouse will be cleaned so the clubhouse carpeted area will be off limits during cleaning. The adult pool anti suction pump had been installed and the spa drain awaits the arrival of its new cover. Mary Ann Jackson has volunteered to take on the float for the Rhody parade. She will need volunteers. You may contact Mary Ann or the office to sign up. It was decided that everyone would continue to pay for the popcorn and coffee. We are on the honor system and there has been a large short fall of payment versus cost. The Board has authorized contacting an engineer to evaluate heat pumps and solar heating for the adult pool. Ken Stone reported another break in and we need to keep an eye out for strangers. Ken sug-gested we put our lights on and if going away make your house look occupied. Have a neighbor park a car in your driveway. Ken is looking for volunteers to help with security. The board has referred the request for a Bocce Ball court to properties. The Computer Club has classes for beginners and advanced so be sure to check them out. The Tuesday club has several functions ready so be sure to check the calendar. (Note: The regular minutes are posted. A brief summary for the newsletter may be of more interest. Your input would be appreciated ..Jo Ann Sutton, Secretary)

The Tuesday Club— A History The Greentrees Tuesday Club was started in the late 70's after resident Fran Simpson began an arts and crafts class that met in the original recreation hall. After Fran left, Ottorene Dom-pier, Rose Wickstrom, Ruth Thiessen, and others from that original group continued to meet, but didn't feel competent enough at arts and crafts to continue the class. The original members had started, among other things, some quilting projects. The quilts were raffled off in Green-trees in an attempt to meet some of the on-going needs of a relatively new park that still needed many things. The charter members had been meeting on Tuesdays and decided to change the focus of the meetings to concentrate on Greentrees' needs, and the needs of the community. They added new members and gave dinners in which they brought pans and uten-sils from individual homes to put on meals. They began meeting in the clubhouse where the fireplace room now stands. Originally only women attended on Tuesdays, so some of the men decided to form a Wednesday Club. This never took off, so fortunately, we have both genders repre-sented in our club today. The weekly meetings are open to all Greentrees residents and guests. We still adhere to the original goals. Over the years the Tuesday Club has provided funding for beautification and "extras" for the park, such as paying for landscaping around the clubhouse and construction of a new park.
