Literacy

AimsStudents are assessed upon three attainment targets outlined in the National Curriculum:

- Writing- Reading- Speaking and Listening

Throughout the year, they will complete punctuation, spelling and grammar revision, using a variety of resources including: Hamilton Trust and Letts Word and Sentence. They will engage in a variety of speaking and listening tasks and will have daily reading sessions. Students will be encouraged to use the school library – to select appropriate reading material.

Term 1

Mathematics

AimsThe work is based on the Abacus Evolve Scheme, worksheets and tests. This course provides complete coverage of the National Curriculum. The Abacus Evolve Scheme helps develop a positive attitude towards mathematics and its uses – and is an enjoyable and motivating course. The school aims for every student to make progress in the understanding and application of mathematical concepts and therefore improve confidence in this subject.

One should also refer to the separate document, How Maths is taught in our school from Nursery to Year 6 sent out last term.

Autumn Term - Cool Stuff – ( Science, Art, D&T and ICT)

Children investigate gadgets for the hi-tech home. They will look at graffiti as an art form and design their own skateboards. Ipods, drums and guitars will be investigated to help explain sound vibrations. Finally, as spies, they have the latest electrical gadgets.

Unit l – The Hi-Tech HomeStudents to investigate the latest, coolest, funkiest gadgets designed for the home. They will learn how they work and how they can make life easier. The students will design the most high-tech home you can imagine and ´shop´ for the latest gadgets available. Science Students will investigate the water cycle and learn about evaporation, condensation and precipitationICT They will use datalogging software and set up temperature sensors to record and analyse data. Art & Design Students will evaluate the work of designer James Dyson and create their own advertising for the QVC shopping channel.

Unit 2 – The Urban ThemeStudents will be introduced to Urban Art and its history, development and key figures. Art & Design - Students will study the work of Julian Beever, a famous Pavement Artist. They will create a catalogue of Beever´s work . Students will also explore the tricks of perspective to create an optical illusion. ICT - Students will use suitable graphic software and scanner and explore the techniques used in photography to capture a sense of movement. Students will also design their own multi media presentation. Use of digital camera.Design & Technology – Students will design their own skateboard.

Unit 3 – Cool VibrationsStudents will consider their own sound likes and dislikes before sorting them into categories of their own choosing. They will observe sound vibrations – drumming, acoustic and electric guitars and explore how sound travels through materials. Design & Technology - Students will design their own soundproof model rooms.Comparing different formats of discs – vinyl, CD, cassettes, MP3 players.ICT - Explore computer game music – use of electronic sounds. Introduce music editing software.

Unit 4 – SpykidsICT -Web research of famous spies such as James Bond. Geography – Mapping skills, capital cities, routes, terrains.Science – Creating electrical circuits. Control box/input/output devices.Design & Technology – Students use Lego Mindstorms.

Winter Term – Keen to be Green

Students look at the world of concerns of global warming, climate change, green issues and eco foot-prints. They become Planet Protectors by recycling and spreading the ´green´message.

These units cover the following curriculum areas:

Design and Technology: Exploring materials; Building monster sculptures; Presenting and evaluating. Plan and make a salad lunch.

Geography: Mapping skills; Green issues across the world. Create a weather report; Recycling.

Art: Design a poster to define cause/effect of climate change; Create a 3D multi-media piece of artwork to depict global warming.

Literacy: To write a range of poetry about saving the Planet – to include alliteration, personification, similes and metaphor. To write a fairytale with an environmental theme; To Write an adventure story to Save Planet Eart – to create own superhero. To analyse newspaper stories and identify features of discussion and information texts.

Science: To research climate changes/global warming – discuss Greenhouse gases. Find link between the hole in the Ozone layer and global warming. To research growing Own vegetables – what do plants need.

ICT: Data handling, analysing data, spreadsheets, surveys, graphs/images. Database – classification.

Spring Term – Lights, Camera, Action

Students find out about the origins of The Moving Image. Special effects in Movie Magic, Hollywood – Bollywood and have fun with Film Stars.

Science: Shadow puppets – to explore the formation and colour of shadows. Fair-testing. Camera Obscura. Projection of light/mirrors/reflection. To explore the effect of mixing, heating and cooling materials to create prosthetics.

Music: Explore Bangra Beat. Composition of Hindi music/Bollywood dancing.

D&T: Make own Javanese style shadow puppets. Invent own design for a working model of a pinhole camera. Design a Superhero costume/ construct cape. Make an Oscar sculpture.

Maths: Data handling/angles/ reflection/ measuring

ICT: Create spreadsheets – Microsoft Excel. Word Processing. Develop Filming techniques/ Internet research skills. Use of digital camera.

History: Chart key developments in film technology. Create a Decades Timeline. Research historical information.

Literacy: Letter writing/persuasion and discussion texts. Evaluate genre of Movie trailers/ Role Play. Poetry. Creation of storyboard for film- Making. Biographical research of Charlie Chaplin.

Art: Indian artwork – large scale class painting. Monochrome artwork. Students to create Andy Warhol image of a film star.
