September 17, 2017 Pentecost 15WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else who looks like they know what is going on.

Restrooms - We would ask that you use the restrooms out the back doors and down the hallway on left.

Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

We apologize for our mess as we remodel our sanctuary.

Upcoming Worship ThemesThe True Church

Who is the church for? How long does it last? What does the church do here on earth?

September 3 – The Church is meant for all September 10 – The Church will stand forever September 17 – The Church speaks a dangerous Word September 25 – The Church watches and warns each other

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINSP: God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in love. He does not treat

us as our sins deserve nor punish us according to our guilt. Instead he looks upon us in compassion, forgives our sin, and heals our lives. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and one another.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy

on me

according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

2

P: As tender as a loving father is to his child, so gentle is God with you. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so vast is God's love for you. As far as east is from west, so far God removes your sin from you. He renews your life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Blessed be God who crowns us with mercy and love!

C: Blessed be God forever!

C (sings): This is the Feast

L: Worthy is Christ, the Lamb once slain, Whose blood was shed to give freedom for all. Power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and blessing; come give glory to Christ!

C: (Refrain)L: Sing out with joy, all people of God!

Join in the song of creation! Blessing and honor, glory and might to God and the Lamb forever more!

C: (Refrain)

3

L: This is the feast for praise and rejoicing, For the Lamb, the one who was slain, Will come forth now and begin God's reign! Sing all you people, sing Alleluia!

C: (Refrain twice)

PRAYER OF THE DAYP: O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve the congregation of believers with your

never-failing mercy. Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Word†

FIRST LESSON Galatians 6:12-16Some people say what people want to hear to avoid being persecuted. God calls believers to speak the truth concerning the cross of Christ.

12 Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. 14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. 16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.

VERSE OF THE DAYThe leader sings the Verse of the Day, then the congregation may join on the repeat.

† The public reading from Scripture can be traced back to the synagogue service (Luke 4:16-21). From Apostolic times the reading of carefully chosen lessons from the Apostles and Evangelists has been the central part of Christian worship.

THE GOSPELMatthew 16:21-26

Jesus himself suffered and died for the truth and to win our salvation. Believers follow by surrendering their own life to their Savior and finding true life in Him.

21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

5

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY O Gracious Lord, With Love Draw Near | 784 (Insert)

THE SERMON TEXT Jeremiah 15:15-2115 Lord, you understand; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecutors.You are long-suffering—do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.16 When your words came, I ate them;

6

they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty.17 I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them;I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation.18 Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable? You are to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails.19 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me;if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman.Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.20 I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze;they will fight against you but will not overcome you,for I am with you to rescue and save you,”declares the Lord.21 “I will save you from the hands of the wicked and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.”

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.C: Amen.
