How Sikhs practice their religion In the India New Year, Sikhs takes down their pole and wash them with yogurt. Surprisingly, washing it with yogurt is effective washing a pole. After they wash the pole, they replace the covering with a fresh one and they use the old covering for souvenir. After they replace the pole with the new covering, they are invited down to the langer. Khalsa is a special organization of the Sikhs that is required 14+ to join and need all the 5K’s. The 5KS are Kesh, Kara, Kanga, Kirpan, and Kachera. After the 5 of the Sikhs are chosen as to represents the originals, they read Guru Gohind Singh’s scripture and drink the Amrit. Sikhs thinks that drinking the Amrit will give them immortality. Sikhs has baptism in the gurdwara and it is 14+ to get baptised. The Sikh who gets baptised kneels down and get sprayed with mixture of water and becomes part of the Sikh and is now responsible to have respect to their god and should follow the rules that Sikhs must follow. There is many rules Sikh has to follow such as no smoking, drinking alcohol, drug is medical purpose only, stealing, and gambling. Men Sikhs should not cut their hair and beard as respect to god and some Sikhs may not eat meat, because they are giving respect to the Hindus, so there isn’t really no-meat eating rule. Parkash is the “holy light” that glows on the guru’s head. You can see all the guru painting they have glowing light on there head. Parkash also means the chief minister of the Sikhs. The chief minister of the Sikhs gets elected by the Sikhs (like electing a president) and becomes the leader of the Sikhs and represents the Sikh nations. Important places of the Sikhs Gurdwara Is a Sikh temple that where Sikhs pray, eat, and have a small community of Sikhs. The Gurdwara temple is different design than Hindu temples and has many different rooms. Some of the places inside the temple are the langer, Punjab, and the worship room. The worship room is where Sikhs pray in a room and the women and the men are separated from each other. The Sikhs go pray in the Punjab and they sing their hymns and listen to the scripture. Some of the rules for the Sikh temple are you must take shower before you go in the gurdwara, men and women are treated equally, women and men are separated in the worship rooms. In the outside of the temple, there are 4 big entrances. There is also many famous Sikh buildings such as the Golden temple, Amritsar made for the 4 th guru, Ram Das. In the Diwali festival time, the Sikhs lights up the golden temple and the lights represents freedom. The golden temple is important to the Sikhs, because Guru Han Gobind saved his princes and kings from the prison that was owned by an evil emperor and in the Diwali they celebrates their freedom.
