Buildings that once had been filled with young monks and sounds of singing were now deserted. A handful of old monks shuffled through the cloisters and praised God with heavy hearts. On the edge of the woods, an old rabbi had built a little hut. He would come there from time to time to fast and pray. And whenever he was there, the monks felt sustained by his prayerful presence. One day the abbot decided to visit the rabbi and to open his heart to him. The rabbi greeted him with a smile and open arms. When they had entered the hut, they sat quietly for a moment and then both began to sob their hearts out like lost children. After their tears had ceased, the rabbi lifted his head. “You and your brothers are serving God with heavy hearts,” he said. “You have come to ask a teaching of me. I will give you a teaching, but you can only repeat it once. After that, no one must ever say it aloud again.” The rabbi looked straight at the abbot and said, “The Messiah is among you.” For a while, all was silent. Then the rabbi said, “Now you must go.” The abbot left without a word and without ever looking back. The next morning, he called his monks together and told them he had a teaching from “the rabbi who walks in the woods” and that this teaching was never again to be spoken aloud. He looked at each of his brother and said, “The rabbi said that one of us is the Messiah.” The monks were started. “What could it mean:” they asked themselves. “Is Brother John the Messiah? Or Father Matthew? Or Brother Thomas? Am I the Messiah? What could this mean?” They were deeply puzzled, but no one ever mentioned it again.

The Rabbi’s Gift – adapted from a story by Francis DorffA famous monastery had fallen on very hard times.

Or Father Matthew?  Or Brother Thomas?  Am I the Messiah?  What could this mean?”  They were deeply puzzled, but no one ever mentioned it again. As time went by, the monks began to treat one another with a very special reverence.  There was a gentle wholehearted, human quality about them now which was hard to describe but easy to notice.  They lived with one another as men who had finally found something.  But they prayed the Scriptures together as men who were always looking for something.  Occasional visitors found themselves deeply moved by the life of these monks.  Before long, people were coming from far and wide to be nourished by the prayer life of the monks and young men were asking, once again, to become part of the community. After this, the rabbi no longer walked in the woods.  His hut had fallen into ruins.  But, somehow or other, the old monks who had taken his teaching to heart still felt sustained by his presence. How does the Holy Spirit work in your life?In Christ’s peace,

To The Members of St. John’s:

Worship is at the heart of our life as the people of God. God’s wonderful gifts of word and sacrament are signs that we live in God’s amazing grace for the whole church and the whole world. When we come together to hear God’s word, to share the sacraments, to confess our sins in the assurance of forgiveness, and to worship God with joy and thanksgiving, we are strengthened and blessed.

Several years ago, the ELCA introduced a new hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship. It was developed by the whole church, with input from congregations and individuals, to be more inclusive and to meet the church’s needs in a rapidly changing world. It will help us to joyfully sing God’s praises. It uses much of the good from the Lutheran Book of Worship and With One Voice; the liturgy we currently use is included.

Our green hymnals are now more than 30 years old and many of them are becoming torn and tattered. Our Worship and Music Committee has discussed purchasing this new hymnal for quite a while. The Synod has encouraged its use. At a recent meeting, the committee recommended that we move now to this new hymnal and Congregational Council approved this recommendation at its March meeting. We will begin using the hymnals on Reformation Sunday of this year.

The cost of hymnals for the choir will be covered by a recent bequest . You are invited to contribute to the purchase of a hymnal or two (or more) in memory or in honor of a special person or to the glory of God at $25.00 each. Forms for this purpose can be found near the entries to the church, in this Messenger, or by calling the Church Office. The deadline for memorial and other recognitions is June 17, 2013. We also welcome all gifts, large and small, to support this new worship resource. These gifts can be made at any time.

We look forward to this “new and improved” worship book. God be with you as you pray and meditate on the contribution you will make. Be bold!

In Christ,

Worship and Music Committee,Mary Siemsen, ChairpersonPastor MarthaSue Moll

Honor and Leadership CorpsInformation Meeting for

Volunteers, Parents & CommunityTuesday, May 21

7:00 PM

A Temple Talk was held during Church on May 5th and was given by Mr. Leonard Capuzzi about the Honor and Leadership Corps program. The Honor and Leadership Corps is a faith-based non-denominational program committed to helping youth in our communities through a structured program to learn to develop positive relationships through honor, respect, and responsibility. The Corps is anchored in the truth of Jesus Christ and open to children, 12 years and older, regardless of their race, religion or family situation. With an ALL VOLUNTEER TEAM of concerned adults, the volunteer team will provide living role models of fatherhood, motherhood, and healthy family relationships.

Volunteers are needed from every walk of life, whether working, retired, married, widowed, or single. Volunteers can give as much or as little of their time to the program as they see fit. The Corps is able to work with volunteer schedules, so that everyone that wishes to help can do so.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the program is invited to attend the meeting on the 21st. For more information, you may contact the Church Office.

Sunday, May 19Day of Pentecost

The Ongoing Gift of the Spirit

What sticks with us most about the Pentecost account are the signs that accompany the outpouring of the Holy Spirit – the rushing wind and the tongues of fire and the speaking in other languages. These are important, for they show us the presence and the power of the Spirit of God for all people of every tongue and tribe and race and nation.

But we dare not forget the two main events that occurred on this day. First, the wonderful works of God in Christ were declared, in particular, by Peter in his sermon. And then, on hearing the Word, multitudes of people were baptized. The wind and the fire were significant, but the main work of the Holy Spirit that day was to deliver the gifts of Christ through preaching and baptizing.

The Holy Spirit hasn’t stopped doing the same work He began on Pentecost. To this day, He declares the wonderful works of God and delivers the gifts of Christ. By grace, through faith, Pentecost continues to this day as the Holy Spirit continues to do His blessed work among us.

Security System Update

The initial phase of the security system has been put into place. There are 3 cameras – one monitoring the outside entrance to Fellowship Hall, one monitoring the 3rd Street Office door on the outside, and one monitoring the 3rd Street Office entrance on the inside.

We will keep you informed as progress occurs and when the door lock system has been activated.

When you forgive...you heal. When you let go...you grow. When you cry out to God...you surrender. When you love unconditionally...you show others Christ's love.

Memorial Day PrayerHeavenly Father, we thank You for the Gift of Your love poured out for us in the selfless sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. As we remember this day those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of Your Son. We thank You for those men and women who have laid down their lives in loving, selfless, sacrifice for us, for our nation, for our freedom, for our families, and for our children. They are an image, a reflection, and an extension of Your love, grace, mercy, and compassion for all people.

Help us to honor their sacrifice by cherishing the freedoms they died to preserve. Help all citizens of this great nation to sacrifice themselves in humble service to their neighbors, recognizing that all we have comes from Your gracious hand, and that we are but stewards and managers of Your boundless providence.

Grant our nation humble and faithful leaders who bear the sword You give them for the good of those under their charge and make this nation, under God, a beacon light of charity, mercy, hope, and peace for the world, that those dwelling in the darkness of sin and death may know true Peace in the Light of Your love, mercy, and forgiveness.

Hold our service men and women in Your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and presence as they stand in the gap for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops, and ask for Your unique blessings to fill their homes, and Your peace, provision and strength to fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be filled with courage to face each day, and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support.

May the Peace of God that passes all understanding, that peace which the world can neither give nor take away, abide with us to bless us, this day, and even forever more.

In the Name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
