Rabbi’s Reflections…
Exploring the Land of Israel
I am looking forward with great excitement
to traveling to Israel with a group of our
members for Temple Shalom’s Adult Israel
Tour. As I have mentioned many times from the bimah, I tru-
ly believe that you cannot fully connect with and understand
the place of Israel in the Jewish heart and soul until you have
been there yourself. I cannot wait to share the treasures of
our homeland with the members of our tour group.
Even more powerful than our adult trips to Israel are the Isra-
el teen tours offered by the Reform movement and our
camps. These trips have a powerfully meaningful impact on
our teens and their Jewish connections (and with the canges
in the Birthright program, teens who go to Israel in High
School are still eligible for a Birthright trip in college!)
There is no greater Jewish gift we can give our Teens than
one of our Reform movement Israel trips. This past summer,
Leah Wilck, one of our TYG officers, went to Israel with NFTY
and Camp Harlam. I asked her to share some reflections from
her trip in the hopes that it will encourage others to follow
her example. Thank you to Leah for sharing and I hope you
enjoy reading her reflections.
L’Shalom,
Rabbi Levy
Connecting with God and Israel Under the Stars
By Leah Wilck
When I got my itinerary for my 4-week trip to Israel, the first
thing I noticed was that within the first week of my stay in the
Holy Land, I would be sleeping in the Negev for three nights.

It said we would be under the stars but, being
the typical girl from Randolph, I didn't actually think
they literally meant under the stars. I assumed it
would be like the “luxury” camping I do here. Air
mattresses, sleeping bags, tents, etc. I didn't think
that when they said desert, that it literally meant the
desert. When it said a morning and evening hike, I
thought of the typical hikes that we take in Randolph
throughout the Morris County Trails. Well, I can tell
you now, I don't think I’ve ever been so wrong.
When they said under the stars, they meant it.
I’ve never seen so many stars in my entire life. Three
nights in sleeping bags, on sand and rocks, surrounded
by mountains, with the sky as our roof. The silence
was deafening. When they said desert, they meant
sand everywhere with mountains surrounding us on
all four sides. When they said hiking, they meant
climbing what I would barely consider a path on
mountains.
Looking at me you would never guess that I woke
up at 3 am to climb a mountain for 7 hours with my best
friends in the land of Israel. Even though I had two asth-
ma attacks, two anxiety attacks, and basically cried the
entire way, I still climbed to the top of a mountain. It
might have been the hardest thing mentally and physical-
ly I've ever had to do but I did it.
When I got to the top and looked around I
realized I really was in Israel, and it was beautiful.
I felt connected not only to the land of Israel, but
to G-d and my Judaism. When it was time to
leave I was extremely grateful to know I would be
sleeping in a real bed with air conditioning that
night, but I was also extremely proud to be able
to say four hikes, three nights, and two moun-
tains later, I survived the Negev.

Thank You for Helping to Make our Holy Day Worship So Special!
I want to express my deepest thanks to: The Seligson/Redan
Families for the gift of our new mahzorim that added so much
meaning to our Days of Awe; Our Holy Day Cantor Raina Siroty who
again brought such beauty, spirituality and joy to our worship (I so
enjoy sharing a bima with you!); Our accompanist Ron Baltimore who
is so dedicated to our community and plays with both skill and heart &
soul; Our educator, Jenny Winters and her teachers for coordinating a meaningful program for
our young people and TSHY members for leading children's worship and helping support the
entire children's program; Administrator Leslie Kallus and my Admin. Assistant Phylis
Sapherstein who do more behind the scenes than anyone will ever know and without whom I
could not do what I do; Our Brotherhood for their dedication as ushers and for making sure
everyone had a place to sit (best ever set up crew!); Our officers and board members for
providing all with a warm welcome and an inviting presence (And very meaningful words from
both Robin Katchen and Jeff Newman.); All of our participants, readers, Torah and
Haftarah readers, Aliyot, candle lighters, Baalei Tekiah and Torah bearers, for representing
the depth and breadth of our community; And most of all, all of you who joined us in worship,
for your embrace of our new mahzor, your understanding that it was new to us on the bimah as
well, the deeply felt way in which you gave voice to our prayers and the thoughtful and engaging
way that you received my words. More than anything we did on the bimah, it was your presence
in the kahal that made these High Holy Days so special. May the year ahead be filled with the
sweetness that you brought to our worship and our congregation. - Rabbi Levy

Our Classroom Community…
(As some of you know, aside from being your Religious School Director, I am also
the Youth Director in charge of Temple Shalom Youth (TSHY) – so my monthly col-
umn will include an update on that as well.)
And…Religious School is finally beginning in earnest! After one spectacular Sunday,
the High Holy Days, Sukkot and Simchat Torah arrived and bumped us gently off
the calendar until this coming October 18 (Sunday), October 19 (first Monday night of the 8th-
12th grades) and October 21 (first Wednesday).
Much has happened in the meantime, though! The TSHY Board met for the first time in late Au-
gust to socialize and talk about the year. Several of them, who were also Madrichim, trained
with me to teach the teachers at the kickoff faculty meeting on September 2 – which went very,
very well! Huge thanks to David Altman, Jacob DeFuria, Natalie Katchen, Leah Wilck and Blake
Lobel for a terrific panel discussion.
From September 11-12, the TSHY board and I went to Dee Dee Katchen’s apartment in NYC to
plan the year and bond. The teens have told me how much they enjoyed it, and we are ready for
the year.
During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the younger kids experienced a variety of fun activities
and special services for them (run also by TSHY). A very special thank-you to Karen Goldblatt
and Alissa Okrent for your expertise, help and devotion! During Sukkot, Raellen Kesselman or-
ganized a wonderful decorating and “Pizza in the Hut” event. At Erev Sukkot services, the 4th
graders were presented with their new prayer books. The books were decorated with new siddur
covers that had their name embroidered on them, with lovely parent messages inside the covers.
On October 4th, all new students are invited to Simchat Torah services, where they will be given
a Consecration Certificate and their own mini-torahs (torah covers decorated by their parents)!
October brings with it all kinds of good stuff for the school! In the teenage world, TSHY mem-
bers will be going to the Fall Kallah at Kutz Camp in Warwick, NY, and there will be a full youth
group meeting at a time TBD where we will gather together and paint the youth lounge! The
Madrichim, having been duly trained and bestowed with lanyards, will start their positions as
Sunday/Wednesday aides. Within the school we have the 7th grade Mount Freedom Cemetery
Trip (many thanks to Stan and Marcia Saltz) on October 18, and a possible tulip bulb planting
for the younger grades (more info to come!)
Page 8
A note on Tzedakah for this year…on Sundays we will still collect money for a worthy cause (also
to be determined), but on Wednesdays we will be starting a non-perishable food collection
Tzedakah project – thanks to Rebecca Braun for this great idea.
Finally, I am thrilled to say that we have a wonderful Rishona/Shlicha from Jerusalem, who will
be working with us this year! Moran Shevach will be teaching in the school, running some teen
and family programming, and conducting exciting Adult Education programs. Please keep an eye
out for those special classes – we are so lucky to have her!
As always, please contact me with any questions or feedback, and always feel free to stop by.

TSHY News
Hello all! My name is David Altman and I am the president of the Temple Shalom Youth Group,
AKA TSHY. This October, we have two exciting events coming up! First, October 5 at 7:45 PM,
we have our opening event of the year: a potluck dessert! It will be tons of fun, as we get to know
the new members and reconnect with the old ones. Then, on October 25 from 12-5PM, we will
be painting the youth lounge! As many of you know, for years the youth lounge has been in des-
perate need of painting, and we are finally going to do it! Any and all creative ideas are wanted!
Also, this coming October 16-19 is NFTY-GER’s Fall/New Member Kallah! For those of you who
don’t know, NFTY is a national federation that is available to all reform high-schoolers. Our re-
gion is GER, which stands for Garden Empire Region. If you have any questions, feel free to con-
tact me or Jenny Winters. Early bird deadline ends October 1, so be sure to sign up soon!
B’nai Mitzvah Profiles
Melissa Danielle Diamint, daughter of Deirdre & Claudio Diamint
of Randolph NJ, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Octo-
ber 3rd, 2015. Missy, as she likes to be called, is an eighth grade stu-
dent extraordinaire at the one and only Randolph Middle School (Go
Rams). She is the younger sister of Jacob Diamint and the grand-
child of Gloria Pomerantz and Julio & Esther Diamint.
Missy enjoys spending time with friends and family, participating in
school events with her Cheer team, listening to her favorite tunes,
also known as “her Jams” and dancing around the house. She is a
loving person with an infectious smile and a heart as big as the uni-
verse. More than anything else, Missy loves to make people laugh.
So, it makes total sense that for her Bat Mitzvah project Missy elected to work with people who
spent their life giving to others but now need some help themselves, senior citizens at a local
nursing home. Missy felt it was important to her to share her time helping the elderly find joy
Page 9
and happiness in their day to day life. As part of her project Missy went to Lester Senior Housing
Center in the Aidekman Jewish Federation Campus where she and other Jewish teens spent time
engaging the seniors in conversation and activities. One of the activities was to make and paint
bird houses.
Missy’s experience was invaluable to her growth as a person and a member of the Jewish commu-
nity. She learned the importance of giving to those who can no longer provide for themselves,
and she also learned of how this mitzvah ties into our Jewish heritage. We are certain that the ex-
perience will have a long lasting impact on her and that Missy will always continue to find ways
to spread her exuberant personality to those who need it the most.
We could not of prouder of Missy. She has accepted the challenge of becoming a Bat Mitzvah the
same way she accepts every challenge, with hard work, dedication determination and the under-
standing of the significance. And as with every challenge before, and those we know that will
come in the future, Missy has excelled in her Bat Mitzvah preparation. We love you lots, Missy,
and we are so proud of you.
Robbie Kirschner, son of Susan Kirschner and Fred Semrau, will be
called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on October 3rd. Robbie is in the
7th grade at Mt. Olive Middle School. He is the grandson of Arline and
the late Larry Kirschner.
Robbie loves spending time with his family, often playing board and
video games and watching movies. He also enjoys bowling and has
even been a part of a league for over five years.
Robbie’s Bar Mitzvah project was motivated by his desire to help the
less fortunate. He participated in the Joy of Sox program where he so-
licited donations of new socks which were donated to the less fortunate. Through his efforts,
over 200 pairs of socks were donated and the charity was so delighted that they posted it on face-
book and gave Robbie a certificate of accomplishment!
Robbie has a unique spirit and heart which touches and brings together his family. Robbie dis-
plays an unconditional commitment to the people that he loves. He would choose to be with his
family above anything else. One of his finest attributes is his ability to maintain a positive dispo-
sition and to focus his attention on the good in others.
Robbie’s family is so very proud of him, wishes him the best of everything in life, and loves him
with all their hearts.
Page 10
Aaron Dworak, son of Audrey Dworak and Richard Dworak of Lake
Hopatcong, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on October 31, 2015.
A seventh-grade student at Jefferson Township Middle School, he is the
brother of Ian and Rachel and the grandchild of Miriam Handler and Ste-
ven and Sandy Handler.
He enjoys participating in all sports including Soccer, Basketball, Baseball
and Swimming. Aaron also enjoys doing woodworking and loves going to
camp.
Aaron is collecting new stuffed animals for children with cancer. They are going through a
tough time and he wants to brighten their day with a soft, cuddly animal.
I am proud of Aaron of reaching a milestone in Jewish Tradition and also is looked upon as an
adult who makes a difference in the community.
