Application for iPad competition – Design and Technology – James Bleach

Why?

As a successful Technology department we are always looking at ways to demonstrate changes in technology and its delivery. We have purchased an apple TV with the idea of being able to move around the classroom and teach from the iPad, mirroring it on the interactive whiteboard. The potential is huge, photos of good work around the room can instantly be screened, any sudden bursts of inspiration can be demonstrated, pupils doing particularly well in the workshop on a machine or a process can be projected and demonstrations can be enlarged, recorded and replayed for all to see.

Where an iPad is currently helping pupils of all ages in DT:

Every year group and every project features the design process in some form, whether it is in food, textiles, resistant materials or graphics. This is a breakdown of typical apps that we use to assist pupils of all ages and ability ranges.

Where an iPad can help in one to one teaching:

In groups where there are pupils that have TA assistance, TA’s and HLTA’s will be trained in the use of the apps below in order to keep pupils working at pace and to produce design pages.

Page 10: Web viewInkflow works like a word-processor for visual thinking. ... Instantly visualize 3D Creo View models on your iPad or iPhone

In order to really develop the Design and Technology Department’s VLE , we felt it was essential to find out what the pupils wanted the site to look like and what information it should contain. We started with a blank canvas in an A2 Product Design class and discussed what we would need in a homepage. With the launch of the new Frog OS it will be possible to run the VLE easier on an iPad. This means that the student will have access to all information posted by staff, right in front of them while they work on projects and coursework. The iPad can also be used with pupils as we develop our KS3 section, giving them a real time view as it is put together.

VLE Page: Description:Homepage: The students liked the idea of having a simple but stylish ‘window’ into each taught area of the department. They also wanted it to feel familiar in terms of it’s layout but retain clear link to design movements and styles. We opted for the ‘De Stijl’ movement and a Mondrian tiled wall.

App review page: This page features an iPad with design apps, each links through to the design app webpage. Pupils have the opportunity to review an app for the site or give it a star rating. These apps can be downloaded by pupils and used in lessons. We are looking to use the iPad to run a technology ‘app review’ competition for year 7 pupils too.

The iphone on the right allows students to jump into a range of design app websites that will encourage literacy around the subject area, inspiration for ideas and when shopping for products. The downloadable resource section features the 6th form handbook, the AQA specification, student resources, SOW and revision materials including past papers.

Resistant Materials Page: The Resistant Materials department page includes a photographic display of past projects so that pupils can be inspired by previous pupil’s work. It also has the curriculum maps information to explain how the 2 year GCSE course will run in order to meet deadlines. There is a section for downloadable content, student resources, revision materials, exemplar coursework and coursework aides.
