Year 2 Curriculum Information – Spring 1st Half 2017

English

Pupils will have opportunities to learn to:

- write for different purposes, e.g. letters, invitations, instructions;- use question marks and exclamation marks;- read and spell common exception words, noting unusual correspondence between spelling and sound and where these occur in the word;- use a greater variety of connectives to join sentences;- use commas to separate items in a list;- turn statements into questions, learning a range of “wh” words;- apply phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words until automatic decoding has become embedded and reading is fluent;- discuss their favourite words and phrases;- develop their comprehension skill by answering questions related to a text, including non-fiction.

Mathematics

Pupils will have opportunities to learn to:

- identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces;- choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml);- compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =;- order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences;- recall their ×2, ×5, ×10 tables;- show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of one number by another cannot;- use written and mental methods to record their calculations;- solve problems related to number and measures.

Science

In Science this half term pupils will be learning about plants. They will identify a number of plants and state where these plants can be found. Pupils will confidently describe variety of common plants and trees using previous observations. They will also Identify differences between two habitats and living things found there; e.g. by drawing and interpreting a picture saying whether they found what they expected. They will recognise the huge variety of seeds from which plants grow.

Computing

In ICT pupils will have an opportunity to use a range of IT equipment and engage in weekly sessions with an IT teacher. They will use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs and use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content. Pupils will also use apps such as ‘Book Creator’ to link learning to class topics.

RE

In RE this term we will be discussing and learning from different religious stories, both Christian and Muslim.We will be discussing meanings of those stories and how they could relate to our lives. For instance, through the story of ‘Jonah and the Whale’ pupils will learn about hope and forgiveness.

Art/DT

In DT this half term children will have an opportunity to learn about different kinds of nature sculptures and to explore the work of Andy Goldsworthy and other environmental artists. At the end of the unit they will design, create and evaluate a multimedia collage.

Music

On a weekly basis pupil will take part in music assemblies. They will use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. They will listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality recorded music.

PE

In PE this half term pupils will be developing the gymnastics skills. They will be using the floor and apparatus to create and perform a sequence of contrasting actions. They will show extension when balancing and flow when transferring weight.

History/Geography

In History this half term pupils will be learning about important people in history: Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. They will start by identifying how people become famous and recalling any famous people they know of. Pupils will learn about conditions in the hospital in Scutari and will develop empathy for Florence and the soldiers

during the war. This information will then be compared to the conditions in hospitals we have nowadays in the UK.

Dear Parents/Carers, We know that as parents you want your children to have the very best education. Please support us by ensuring that your child:

Attends school ON TIME, EVERY DAY Wears the correct uniform to school each day Actively demonstrates Grace, Love, Fellowship and the 4Ps Completes and returns their homework every week

Our curriculum targets are as follows: Reading: I can read a book with understanding and answer recall questions based on the text.Writing: I can make adventurous word and language choices appropriate to the text. Mathematics: I can work out problems in an organized way, explain my methods verbally, in pictures or number sentences.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Home School Communication: I will be in the playground before/after school on most days if you need any information. If you have any worries or concerns, please contact the school office to make an appointment with me for a formal meeting.

Attendance and Punctuality: We have high expectations for attendance and punctuality. Make sure that your child comes to school ON TIME, EVERY DAY. If you do not send your child to school on time, every day, THEY WILL MISS VALUABLE LEARNING TIME THAT CAN NOT BE REPLACED!

Behaviour: We have high expectations for work and behaviour; therefore it is essential that you give your child a daily reminder about the importance of demonstrating: Grave, Love, Fellowship, Pride, Perseverance, Positivity and Potential (4Ps) in everything that they do.

Uniform: Please ensure that your child wears the correct uniform each day to promote a sense of pride and belonging in our school community. Children must wear plain, sensible black shoes to school (shoes with too much decoration, additional colours or trainers are not part of our school uniform).

PE: Children will have PE every Thursday. Please ensure that your child brings the correct PE kit (white t-shirt, black shorts/track-suit and trainers/plimsolls) to school.

Homework: Children receive homework every Friday. Remember to ask your child to explain their homework to you and support them as necessary. Please ensure that your child completes their homework each week and returns it to school by Wednesday. If the homework is not returned on time, it will not be marked.
