Outdoor living rooms have not only become popular

ways to add space to homes, but many homeowners

also view them as extensions of the indoors. Today’s

outdoor rooms have easily become the most dazzling

parts of a home by embracing lavish gardens,

courtyards, pools and other water elements, fire pits,

outdoor kitchens, televisions, stylish furniture and just

about every comfort one would find indoors.

As we move into prime spring and summer entertaining

season, we turned to Clinton Smith, editor-in-chief of

VERANDA to help us explore the art of creating the

ultimate outdoor room.

What is the most important element of the

outdoor room?

Good company! Outdoor rooms should welcome friends

and family like a hug.

VERANDA keeps its readers in touch with the

finest in design and decorating, so you’ve

seen your fair share of beautiful outdoor

spaces. What was the most memorable

outdoor room you have ever seen?

That’s hard to say. Because of its climate, California has

so many homes with beautiful outdoor rooms that really

blur the lines between indoors and out.

Do you think an outdoor room is more in

demand among affluent homebuyers than, say,

20 to 30 years ago? Why do you think that is?

Without a doubt. Exterior furnishings are as beautiful as

anything you’d find indoors. That was not necessarily

the case, even just 10 years ago. But now, even outdoor

appliances and grills are elegant. In the 20 to 30 years,

people have become more well traveled and have seen

things while on vacation that inspired them. So you’ve

seen people incorporating elements of resort-style living

into their own homes.

Do you agree with the statement that an

outdoor space should be an extension of your

interior space?

Any outdoor room should be a seamless extension of

what you see inside.

Who are some of your favorite designers when

it comes to outdoor spaces?

My favorite designers are those who honor not only a

home’s architecture and interior design but also respect

its place in the world. An outdoor room in Florida

shouldn’t feel the same as one in California or Texas.

What is the biggest risk you would take in

designing an outdoor space?

Not knowing what you want. An outdoor room cannot

be an afterthought. If decorating from scratch, people

need to give outdoor areas the same attention as

interior spaces and budget accordingly for furnishings;

otherwise, they’ll have a terrace, patio, deck or veranda

that never gets used. Make a priority list. Do you want a

quiet, contemplative space to read the morning paper?

Or a brick pizza oven to entertain big groups of friends

and family on the weekends? Or both?

In your view, how important are elements like

water and fire in outdoor design?

Very! Fire pits can provide great gathering spaces for

creating memories, and the visual effects of a great water

feature, however big or small, can add aesthetic value.

If I have any advice, it would be to keep these elements

simple and understated. Sometimes a water fountain

properly placed can leave you with the same lasting

impression as a large pool.

While many of California’s cities grew by accident of geography, agriculture,

or transportation, Irvine was a planned city from the beginning. The

Gabrielino Indians were early settlers in the entire region, and Orange

County was divided into large ranchos owned by several families,

including the Irvines.

James Irvine bought out his partners in 1878, creating the Irvine Ranch,

which stretched from the Pacifi c Ocean to the Santa Ana River. Eventually,

The Irvine Company sold parcels to the U.S. government and, later, to the

University of California, and in 1970 began the process of transforming

the undeveloped land around the new UCI campus into a master-planned

community. Agriculture took a back seat to residential and commercial

development, while thousands of acres of permanent open space was

built into the original design.

Incorporated in 1971, Irvine now has a population of 250,384 (2015)

who live in attractive townships called villages, each served by nearby

stores, schools, and places of worship. The schools are exceptionally

well regarded and the area has attracted many companies requiring

a skilled workforce. Since 2008, Irvine has appeared numerous times

in the top ten, or even the top fi ve best places to live, safest cities, top

cities for start-ups, fastest growing job markets, and best-run cities, in

rankings by CNNMoney.com, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, and

other publications. With its fi lm-friendly economics and policies, Irvine

is also a popular location for cinematic projects.

Along with the University of California, Irvine is home to campuses of

more than a dozen other colleges and universities. It is a city known for

its arts—music, theatre, visual art, dance—and its many parks, including

The Orange County Great Park, still under construction, which will

eventually be twice the size of New York City’s Central Park. Built on the

site of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the Great Park will

span some 1,300 acres of sports, preserved parkland, historic exhibits,

classes, and family-friendly activities and rides.

Along the eastern curve of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains,

the Coachella Valley is a low-lying crown, jeweled with sparkling resort

communities. La Quinta, nearly surrounded by the Santa Rosas, is one of

those gems—a residential/resort community known for its golf, pristine

surroundings, equestrian lifestyle, and its appreciation for the arts.

In its geological footprint, the valley shows evidence of the Pacifi c

Ocean that once covered the landscape, as well as later traces of the

freshwater Lake Cahuilla. This was the traditional home of the Desert

Cahuilla Indians, who dug wells, hunted and gathered throughout the

area, and whose descendants live in the region today.

When nearby Indio became the halfway point on the Flagstaff -to-Los

Angeles rail line, La Quinta was settled by farmers who saw the agricultural

promise in desert-friendly dates, seedless grapes, onions, and corn. By

1926, the La Quinta Resort was welcoming visitors from both coasts,

and gained additional fame as the place where director Frank Capra

wrote the screenplay for Lost Horizon. Decades later, when the city was

incorporated, taking its name from the now-classic resort.

With more than 20 golf courses in the city of 35.6 square miles, it’s little

wonder that the Robb Report called La Quinta the leading golf destination

in the U.S. These courses, including PGA West, the Arnold Palmer Classic

Course at SilverRock, and The Quarry at La Quinta, designed by Tom

Fazio, host some of the most prestigious tournaments in the world.

The city of La Quinta has 20 parks and scores of hiking, biking, and

equestrian trails. The parks and trails each preserve an aspect of the

region’s character, from desert fl ora to ancient petroglyphs and, of

course, stellar views during the day and breathtaking stars in the clear

desert nights.

With a year-round population of 39,331 (2013), La Quinta welcomes an

annual infl ux of “snowbirds” who enjoy its many galleries, fi ne restaurants,

abundant recreation and entertainment options, shopping, relaxing

spas, and unlimited natural beauty.
