Editorial…...

You will have seen from the front cover that Ron and Beth celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary a few weeks ago. Another anniversary to celebrate was 50 years of the Bowls Club which started in 1967 when a club room and green was provided adjacent to The Oliver Roper Centre. The first name on the honours board appropriately enough is, yes you’ve guessed it, Ron Bradford. Ron and Les Taylor were the first winners of the doubles in 1969.

The history of The Oliver Roper Centre is interesting. The Village Committee of St. Margaret's Farm development was formed in 1963 when Londoner Oliver Roper, who had relatives in Thorpe on the Hill, made over the farm for the use and amenity of the people of Thorpe. A charity status such as this can be a valuable asset.

An enthusiastic committee of villagers was organised to manage it and their efforts and fund raising led to the construction of the bowls green, tennis courts, slides, swings and centre. We have a lot to thank them for. Ernest Rowland, Beth’s Dad, was chairman for many of the early years. September 29th 1988 however saw a meeting of the committee report that a large sum of money was needed for playground refurbishment and safety and the Parish Council subsequently took over the running of the Oliver Roper Charity amenities.

The safeguarding of these amenities is now solely in the hands of the Parish Council as the Charity Commission website currently indicates that The Oliver Roper Recreation was registered as a charity on 13th July 1966 but removed from the register on the 11th April 2017. From the August Parish Council minutes we see that the Oliver Roper Charity has been dissolved and the land registered on the Land Registry with the Parish Council as Trustees.

Well Christmas will soon be upon us and the next newsletter will be with you at the beginning of December. We will need to have any articles, correspondence and advertising copy in by Friday 17th November to accommodate printing arrangements. Thanks.

The Revd Andrew Vaughan writes…..

A Service to Remember Departed Loved Ones

As I write this it is early September, but with preparing to move house and deadlines for print for our newsletters I thought it best to be on the good side of the editors, who do such an important job in ensuring information is gathered and communicated.

November is a month of Remembrance and each of the villages in the Group of Churches will be busy preparing for the solemn acts of remembrance around Armistice Day, details of which will be found elsewhere in this publication. Perhaps with so much news coverage of armed aggression Remembrance this year is very poignant and a challenge to seek peace and not destruction. Recognising that if that process fails we owe so much to those who have given and offer to give of themselves, to protect the vulnerable and challenge aggression.

As well as Remembrance Sunday, 2nd November offers us the opportunity to remember our own loved ones who have passed away. The traditional name for this day is All Souls. The group of Parishes will be holding a service of Remembrance for departed loved ones at All Saints Church Swinderby at 7.30pm on the 2nd of November. We will be inviting people to light a candle in memory of their loved ones who have died and to have their names read out in the prayers. Over the course of the next few weeks we are hoping to get letters out to those who have had funerals with our churches over the past 3 years, however, as with all admin systems, our lists may be incomplete. People may have moved, and others moved into the area. This service is open to anyone who has lost a loved one and would like to take half an hour to remember them, so please feel free to join us, light a candle in their memory and add their name to the list to be read out. To re-iterate the service is at All Saints Church Swinderby at 7.30pm on 2nd November 2017. I hope this service can be a rich opportunity for all who attend. As ever

Thorpe’s Trees.

Thorpe on the Hill is not blessed with a wide variety of trees. There are a number of interesting species however and a short series of articles will look at some of them. First off then, the Walnut (Juglans regia). As far as I know, there are just three Walnut trees in TOTH – there may be more? Two are on the triangular green, near the Oliver Roper Centre and the other is at the junction of Main Street and Semper’s Close.

A native of Asia Minor, the Walnut was brought to Britain by the Romans. It was used as a food and a source of cooking oil. In Medieval times, the Doctrine of Signatures said that preparations made from plants that looked like parts of the human body could be used effectively in treating ailments of those parts! The peeled nut therefore, looking like the brain, was used to treat mental disorders!

The Walnuts on our village trees will soon be ripe. They are delicious when peeled and fresh, as opposed to the dried Walnuts from the Supermarkets. However, be warned! The skins stain badly. Next time, the Tree of Heaven! Do you know the whereabouts of our single specimen?

Lawrie Poole

Walnut is used in furniture manufacture, and the nut oil in making soap. The photos show the tree in Semper’s Close; the light grey, deeply fissured trunk; leaves with their leaflets and growing fruit; and an opened, unripe nut.

Crackin’ Christmas Celebration

at the Natural World Centre, Whisby Nature Park.

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November

Plans are now well underway for the 6th annual Crackin’ Christmas

Celebration. Last year’s Christmas Market saw over 1,000 visitors with a

variety of stalls for the public to see including arts & crafts, live

entertainment, seasonal treats plus many others!

Now spread over an entire weekend, event organisers are pleased to be

once again working with the Country Crafts Association, an organisation

dedicated to promoting the skills and excellence of local artists and

crafters. A superb chance to find great gifts for all the family!

Whisby Nature Park is managed by The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

The lakes at Whisby Nature Park are surrounded by grassland, marsh, scrub and willow carr. Elements of the original landscape before quarrying also remain, with fragments of heathland, old hedgerows and a small oak woodland. In spring and summer, flocks of tits and finches are joined by warblers. The lakes attract feeding sand martins and swallows, and terns nest on the islands. Chiffchaffs, reed and sedge warblers can be heard. Whisby Nature Park has also become famous for nightingales. Autumn brings the first sight of winter birds such as goldcrests, redpolls and grey wagtails. In winter, the water levels are at their highest and wildfowl are numerous. You can also encourage wildlife into your own garden. Hedgehogs, sparrows and song thrushes are all declining species in the UK but if we manage our gardens and community green spaces sympathetically for wildlife, these and many more will feel the benefits. With an estimated 16 million gardens in the UK, the way they are cared for can make a big difference to the natural world. Whilst individual gardens might be small, together they form a patchwork that links green spaces in towns and villages to the wider countryside and nature reserves. Together, our gardens are a vast living landscape. Wildlife gardening is about making a haven for you, as well as for wildlife. By gardening with wildlife in mind, you'll be rewarded with a natural outdoor space, where you can observe the animals and plants that make

Walking Group

To Skell and Back

Wednesday 30th August

We made our second visit to Skellingthorpe Old Wood hoping to find better weather conditions than we did in January when the temperature was so low that we had to keep moving to stay warm. Things looked promising when Lincolnshire achieved the record for its all time Late Bank Holiday high on Monday the 28th but, in just 48 hours, the temperature fell by at least 14 C. To make matters worse, it rained for the second walk in a row.

Did it put us off? Absolutely not, as you can see from the photograph. Although this was taken at the end of the walk when thoughts had moved on to the always excellent lunch at the Railway! The final 2 walks of the year will be on the morning of Thursday 2nd November and Thursday 21st December for the Night Hike. Come and join us!

My apologies to Ron South (back row, dark glasses) for not realising that he was our first octogenarian. (See the Walking Group entry in the last issue). Tony and Caroline

VILLAGE BOWLS

As the days begin to shorten the 2017 outdoor bowls season has drawn to a close for another year. The weather has played its part during the season with a few matches having to be re-arranged. However this did not dampen the spirits of the hardy bowlers of Thorpe on the Hill, who, come rain or shine, were ready to tread the turf for a few hours of social pleasure. Fortunes this year have been somewhat mixed. The club had some good form in cup matches, successful to one semi-final and final, that being the The Hospital Plate, a local derby played against Eagle at Eastgate. Unfortunately Eagle got the better of Thorpe in the latter stages of the match, but it was well fought to the end. In the 3 leagues, we contested i.e. Cliff, Lincoln & District and Lincoln City, the year brought us mixed fortunes. Initially we made a good start, standing in the top three of each league but by mid-July we had lost some ground and dropped to 7

th in the Cliff league. With continued good form though we

maintained 2nd

and 3rd

positions in the Lincoln & District and Lincoln City leagues. The season finished at the end of August with final positions of 8

th,

6th and 4

th. Not as good as was hoped but still a decent achievement for a

small club with only 18 members. Mentioning membership leads me onto recruitment....it is hoped that some of you who read this may wish to join us in 2018 when the season begins in late April. It is a sorry thing to say but many bowls clubs struggle to maintain a healthy number of players. It would be a very sad day if ever the Bowls club at Thorpe were to close due to lack of interest. At present only half the members who play come from the village. Currently competition play takes place on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Of course you don’t have to commit to every game, just list your available dates. The green is available for social bowling during the day. The costs are minimum once you have purchased the required set of bowls and clothing…. eBay is always a good source. Any club member would also be more than happy to offer advice of any aspect of bowls including free coaching should that be required. Costs? Well at the beginning of the season we ask for a £20 club fee from all members and then participants in the league competitions pay a small match fee of £2 for home and £1 for away matches. This is to cover costs to maintain the green, equipment and other items as required. So, if you are young, middle-aged or a recycled youth, male or female, then there are many reasons why bowling could be the sport for you, whatever your age and whatever level of fitness. Come and join the village bowls club!

Are you fed up with slow broadband ? Here’s an option to improve your broadband speed…

Having become frustrated with a very slow broadband connection for a long time I became aware of the Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme which has been developed by the UK government to provide subsidised broadband instillation to homes and businesses that are unable to access a broadband speed of at least 2Mb per second and who will not benefit from the superfast broadband roll out.

You may be eligible for the scheme if…. 1. You are unable currently to access a broadband download speed of at least 2MB per second. 2. There are no alternative affordable broadband services available to you, which would provide a download speed of at least 2Mb per second. 3. There are no plans to provide superfast broadband to your location within 12 months of your application.

The scheme offers a subsidy of up to £350 towards the installation and commissioning of a basic broadband service from a registered supplier of an alternative form of broadband such as satellite, fixed wireless or 4G mobile. It is a requirement that you enter into a contract for a minimum of 12 months with one of the suppliers registered under the scheme. You can check whether you meet the qualifying criteria on-line using the links detailed below.

I opted for a fixed wireless broadband supplier (Notspot) who installed a small antennae on the side of the house that looks rather like a Pringles tube together with a new router a few months ago and my broadband speed is now consistently around 15Mb per second from a previous rate of around 0.5Mb per second. It is now possible to watch downloads without constant freezing and the improvement in speed of accessing websites has been dramatic. Further details of the scheme are available on www.onlincolnshire.org/subsidyscheme You can check your broadband speed at www.dslchecker.bt.com and you can check whether superfast broadband is available at your address using the BDUK superfast broadband checker at http://gosuperfastchecker.culture.gov.uk/.

If you want to take advantage of the scheme you will need to move fast as it is ending at the end of this year. Martin Latham
