Spring is fast approaching and with it comes a chance to freshen up your outdoor
space for the warmer weather.“It’s getting to the point in the year where people want to start planning their projects,” says Darcy Hope from Evergreen Exhibitions, host of the fifth annual Victoria Early Spring Home Expo, Feb. 22 to 24. “It’s good to be prepared to get a move on when spring arrives.”The changing season is a great opportunity to turn your attention to the yard and exterior of your home and make some much-needed repairs or upgrades.1. CONSIDER A ROBOTIC LAWN MOWERLike a Roomba for your yard, robotic lawn mowers take all the work out of lawn maintenance.“Robotic lawn mowers are definitely the cool new thing
nowadays,” says Darcy. “You set a wire perimeter and it stays within and does its thing.”They have safety features that turn off the blade when objects get close to prevent injury to pets and people.Plus, since the grass clippings are much smaller than those of a traditional lawn mower, there’s no need to clean them up and they return moisture and nutrients into the soil more quickly. It’s a great way to keep your lawn looking great even when you’re away.2. ADD A FIRE PIT OR GRILLA fire pit – whether traditional or propane – can give your backyard a focal point. It’s a great way to keep enjoying the green space long after the sun has set.“There’s a locally made and designed outdoor fire grill for camping that’s going to be at the show this year,” says Darcy.
“It’s nice to get something that’s made in Port Alberni rather than mass produced.”3. PAINT YOUR EXTERIORBeen awhile since you had a fresh coat? While conventional wisdom says that you should wait for hot
weather to paint, Victoria is warm enough in the spring for many types of exterior paints.And remember, the closer you are to the ocean, the more frequently you should repaint your home to protect it from the elements. Get

COME VICTORIA’S SPRING HOME EXPO TO FIND INSPIRATION
For those of us on the west coast, February marks the transition into spring, even though we just experienced the snowiest February ever! With Spring coming, everyone is excited to head outside into the fresh air. But before you do, there are still some things to take care of inside first! Follow our tips to make your home happy and healthy for February and the coming Spring.
At the beginning of the month, or whatever fits best into your schedule each month, check and reset your GFCI outlets, clean your garbage disposal and range hood filter, and inspect your fire extinguishers and HVAC filters.
In each bathroom in your home,
check the caulking around sinks, showers, and bathtubs. Remove any old, damaged caulking and apply again to reseal. Remove the shower heads and clean any sediment from them so they perform to their maximum efficiency. Run water through any lesser used taps and flush toilets to keep everything flowing smoothly.
Give your bathroom a quick facelift by replacing the shower curtains. If your budget allows, swap out the towels and floor mats for new ones to match the shower curtain.
In the kitchen, wipe down the exterior of the fridge and wipe out any spills inside. Replace the baking soda to keep things
smelling fresh.
If you are planning on selling your home, make a plan to list it in the spring or summer. This may involve planning some repairs around the home and purging your belongings to stage the house for selling.
Tidy the entrances to your home, cleaning up any mud and dirt that has been dragged in over the winter. If you don’t have somewhere to put muddy shoes, set up a spot to reduce tracking it throughout the house.
If you haven’t painted in a while, plan to tackle this project this spring! Choose which room(s) you’re going to paint and have
fun choosing colour(s)! Make a shopping list with how much of each colour of paint you need, drop sheets, paint brushes, rollers, and trays. If you’re lucky, you can plan this for a day when the weather is on the warmer/drier side so you can open windows to help air out the house and dry the paint.
