Welcome to the 2010 Tauranga Home Show

Stunning range of home, lifestyle, businessHi and welcome to this year’s 11th annual

Tauranga Home Show.We thank you for taking the time to come and

enjoy the products, the people and the many services that go to make up the region’s huge home lifestyle industries.

The Tauranga Home Show is the only one to be held in the city this year, so it’s now or never to get yourself a great deal, learn about the new products or win one of five top prizes, more about those later.

Convenience for you

It’s also a great opportunity to get three or four quotes in an hour or so, saving you time and money, especially if you’re after new and innovative heating solutions; looking at your energy options or wanting to build or renovate in the near future.

This year’s event has a brand new entrance and carpark (thanks ANZ) and features most of the main home and lifestyle exhibits in the three pavilions - the Green Pavilion, the Central Pavilion and the Westpac Pavilion.

There are also three marquees this year, including the popular Food Marquee, which will host live cooking demonstrations and the always popular ‘taste and takeaway’ displays.

Food for thought

This year we bring back the Food & Entertain-ment Courtyard with its selection of great eats and refreshments to help you refuel before heading back out to do some more shopping and short-

listing. We’ve also got some flash new loos for you ladies (and gents) this year, so no more plastic un-fantastic. Yay!

Also this year there is the Free Bayfair-Home Show Bus which will leave Bayfair for the Home Show at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the show. It leaves the Home Show at 11am, 12noon, 1pm and 2pm to return to Bayfair.

And don’t forget to enter the prize draws with your entry ticket.

Great prizes up for grabs

There are more than $13,000 of prizes are up for grabs this year, including a full body Massage Chair from OSIM valued at $4500, a fabulous Fijian Island Holiday Cruise for two with Mondo Travel Tauranga, Air Pacific and Captain Cook Cruises worth over $3000, the Resene ColorShop’s paint/wallpaper/soft furnishings package valued at $2000, the ANZ Championship Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic Corporate Package for two worth $1500 and a very smart soft bedding package from Baystyle Interiors also worth $1500.

Ticket price unchanged

And it’s still only $10 entry for adults, with the Two-for-$10 Deal on Friday only back again by popular demand. Entry is free for those aged under 13 years. Show hours are 10am-5pm daily April 30-May 2, Baypark Stadium. See you there!

Explore new show homes right hereBe transported into a new way of living

This year, for the first time ever, there will be two show homes on site at the Tauranga Home Show at Baypark Stadium, enabling visitors to be transported into two completely new living

environments.

Both show homes were built by Baypine Homes, the building division of Te Puke Building Supplies. One is built to a Baypine Homes standard design, while the other was created for Marc Dyer of Personalized Housing, who takes ordinary build-ing projects and turns them into something that reflects the individuality and personality of the owners.

The Baypine Homes show home comes from the company’s classic design range. The 96m2 mono-pitch roof home, features three bedrooms, an en suite off the master bedroom plus a main bathroom and an open-plan living, kitchen, dining area.

The timber weatherboards and materials for this home were all milled at Te Puke Building Supplies to save on construction costs. These savings are passed on to customers. The design features tongue and groove sarked

ceilings and plastered walls. The show home has been decorated to give its visitors an idea of what they could walk into when they buy a Baypine Home.

The Personalized Housing show home comes from Marc’s I C Red range and is based on one of Baypine Homes’ standard designs which has been altered and up-spec’ed to create a house that is affordable, but has its own unique individual character.

Special features of this show home include window seating in the lounge to make good use of space; a long wide hallway ending in a feature window; and kwila flooring in the kitchen.

Marc combines years of construction experience, interior design practice and visual arts skills to pro-vide people homes they love to live in. His designs can be altered to suit all budgets and styles, from transportable homes to new homes of all types.

Marc Dyer of Personalized Housing says his training as an artist helps him create unique interiors.

30 April - 2 May 2010 Baypark Stadium, Mt Maunganui.

Building your own home is a dream for many Bay of Plenty families.

The idea of living in a house created just for you holds vast appeal. You can choose the location and work with a designer, builder or architect to include features that suit your way of life and express your individuality.

Local expertise

The Tauranga Home Show, April 30-May 2, is a great opportunity to learn about building companies in the region and see what they have to offer in terms of service, standard house plans and design services.

In today’s busy world, many people decide to take the easy option and choose from standard plans and packages which include everything from building through to appliances. This can also be a great way to keep to a tight budget. However, others prefer to be heavily involved in the design and build process. If you’ve already found the perfect site, but don’t

want to build, transporting an existing house onto the property is another option that allows scope for the imagination.

Inject new energy

Whether you are looking to revamp your kitchen or bathroom, redecorate or add a new room or level to your house, renovating is a great way to add value to a property. It can improve comfort for your family or, if you are looking to sell in the near future, make it more appealing to potential buyers.

There are a huge range of businesses at the show, ranging from cladding, spouting, electrical and plumbing specialists to interior and exterior clean-ers to sellers of elevators and centralised vacuum systems.

Investing in your home

Whether you’re looking to build, buy or renovate, ensuring you have a good budget and the cash to pay for all your plans is essential. A number of banks, finance companies and insurers will be present at the show, ready to talk to exist-ing and potential home owners about what they have to offer to help you achieve your dreams.

It’s beginning to feel more like winter and people are reminded to sort their home heating before it gets too cold. There are many ways to heat the home, some more

efficient than others, and it is important that the energy used is not being wasted.

An energy efficient home has a major impact on the health and comfort of those who live there. It costs less to run and using less energy means you reduce your carbon footprint which benefits our environment.

Warming up the home has many benefits, including improved air qual-ity, which reduces the risk of many respiratory and cardiovascular problems for overall improved health. An energy efficient home also saves you money in the long run, making a warm home more affordable to maintain.

Heating options

A wood burner is still the cheapest way to heat a home, especially if you get the firewood for free. Heat pumps are a close second for running costs.

Wood pellets are easy on the environment producing less atmospheric pollution than conventional wood burners and they are carbon neutral because the pellets are made from wood waste.

Heat pumps are an energy efficient option. They can be small enough to heat just one room or large enough to heat a big open plan area.

Natural gas is clean burning and provides enough

heat for instant hot water and central heating, but every gas appliance should have a flue. The sun is the most environmentally-friendly home

heating option available. North-facing windows allow the sun to shine in all day long. A large thermal mass, such as a concrete floor to store heat, and insulation ensures the heat isn’t lost too quickly at night.

All of these options will run at their optimum level if the home is also properly insulated and if the windows are double glazed.

Double glazing helps heating appli-ances run more efficiently and can be installed into aluminium or timber window frames increases temperature control so the home is warmer in winter and cooler in summer, and virtually eliminates condensation and dampness within the home.

All under one roof

Rather than having to drive around town to compare products and prices, the Heating Expo at the Home Show will be a place for people to learn about a variety of heating options, all under one roof. Compare and get quotes from insulation installers for ceiling, wall and under floor insulation, speak with the experts of heating and ventilation DVS systems, learn about air conditioning and heat pumps, and get competitive prices for double glazing and solar energy options.

People will also have the chance to discuss The Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart insulation and clean heating programme that was introduced by the government last year with registered providers.

Most people spend a third of their life in the bedroom. It’s a place to curl up with a good book after a busy day at work, and a place to

recharge in preparation for each new day.

It’s also the place where piles of clean and dirty washing usually end up and the room that is most neglected in many cleaning rou-tines as it’s the most private room of the house and the least likely to be shared with family and friends.Understated, contemporary designs empha-

sise sleek, smooth minimalism that is warm

and inviting. This continuing trend has a casual elegance that evokes the serenity and peacefulness many search for in their bedroom. A range of wallpaper, drapes and carpet are big contributors to any overall design. Matching furniture, a comfortable bed to snuggle into

every night and

unique decorations that reflect your personal-ity will help make the space your own.

Another trend that has spread through the home is one to be more ‘green’ and use eco-friendly products. From paint to flooring, energy conscious lighting and resource-saving furnishings, it is now easier than ever to bring environmentally aware products into the home.

Apart from basic furniture and furnishings,

throws and pillows can add to the comfort and cosiness of the room. Bedside lamps, mirrors, vases, artwork and other accessories are eclectic, blending various periods and styles, adding character and individuality to the room. It adds interest and allows a couple to combine their tastes, creating a space they will both enjoy.

Get inspiration to turn the bedroom into your sanctuary you won’t want to leave with the help of specialists at this weekend’s Home Show at Baypark Stadium.

Comfortable space to recharge after a hectic dayThe bedroom is a place for relaxation and romance

Time for some ‘me’ timeIt is time to indulge with bubbly

and chocolates while learning about the latest health and beauty trends

at the Tauranga Home Show.

Women are often guilty of neglecting themselves by focusing all their attention on others, but this home show is an oppor-tunity to turn this around. There are plenty of health and beauty options available at

the show: natural skincare, fitness options, picking up natural soaps, making over your image or learning about the latest beauty trends such as Botox.

A peaceful retreat for an energising boostIn today’s hectic times, the bathroom is

often the only place in a home where you are guaranteed a little peace and quiet.

It’s no longer a place to fly in and out of each day and the décor should reflect the relaxation you hope to get from it. When updating the bathroom, take inspiration from a favourite holiday spot. This is your escape, and with the right colours and a little imagi-nation, you can feel like you are at the beach while enjoying a soothing soak in your own tub.

Think space

When remodelling, design the space to fit your function and needs. Start with a theme then decide on the overall impression of the room. Modern themes use smooth and clean lines. A basic colour palate for a modern bathroom includes neutral colours of white, grey and black accentuated with a bright secondary colour such as red, blue or green.

Continued theme

New fixtures are a great way to spruce up the look of the bathroom and add a sleek appearance. Use your chosen finish, such as chrome or brushed nickel, throughout the bathroom on faucets, showerheads, towel racks, hooks and light fixtures. Many new faucets, showerheads and toilets are low-flow, built for efficiency which conserve water and save money on water bills.Whether your bathroom is as big as a master

bedroom or as small as a closet, bathroom storage is constantly an issue. Find creative storage solutions to maximise the space and enhance the style of you bathroom. Adequate bathroom storage is a great investment during renovations. Cupboards and shelving are important considerations but for small bathrooms that may only have a small pedestal sink, simple storage options include decorative storage bas-

kets. Adding mirrors will also help make the bathroom appear larger than it is, brightening and adding depth to an otherwise cramped space.

Get more inspiration and ideas for your new bathroom at the Home Show.

Try as you might to get family and friends to

socialise elsewhere in the house, they always seem to congregate to the kitchen. The kitchen is not ‘just’ the place

where meals are prepared, it is also a place for conversation and increasingly, dining rooms and sitting areas are incorporated to create a unified kitchen space.

Recently, kitchen features and products are earth-friendly, high-tech, colourful and are

designed for fresh and healthy food preparation, convenience and functionality.

Timeless designs

There are many versatile choices for kitchen renovations that are beautiful and timeless that work well with multiple architectural styles, from contemporary to modern, English cottage to French country, neoclassical to rustic and Tuscan to Victorian. Kitchen cabinets today look

more like fine furniture, counters and islands act as informal dining tables, and ban-quet-style seating offers comfortable places for people who congregate to the kitchen for more than just the food.

Specialty

workstations, such as baking centres, coffee bars, wine tasting nooks and pizza making stations, are also gaining popularity. They represent the talents and pas-sions of the household’s culinary enthusiast, adding practicality for the things they do most in the kitchen. They also add another workspace for kitchens with more than one cook.

Walk-in pantries are large storage areas which help keep the kitchen clean and tidy. They accommodate bulk-shopping purchases and provide space for snacks, canned goods, baking supplies and surplus goods such as paper towels and aluminium foil, freeing the cup-boards and drawers for everyday items including dishes, glassware and cooking supplies.

Time saversNew appliances are faster and

smarter which helps maximise time and efficiency in the kitchen. They are also more aesthetically pleasing than previously, making great conversation points for gatherings.

Revamp your kitchen on any budget with the right tools and knowledge. If you are building a new home or updating your exist-ing home and want to make small or significant changes to your kitchen, get great advice about designs and recent trends from the specialists at the Home Show.

Tauranga’s international celebrity chef Peter

Blakeway will be passing on top tips and favourite

recipes during live cooking demonstrations every day

at the Home Show at Baypark Stadium.

Peter, who owns Deli on Devonport, will be located in the Bay of Plenty Food and Cuisine Marquee, where visitors to the show will also find the Taste & Takeaway areas where they can sample new and excit-ing food and drink products.

The live cooking theme this year is Peter’s Perfect Party Menu, which features five courses presented on the hour, every hour; April 30-May 2.

Demonstrations start at 11am with canapes: tapas-style pork serranitos; and moving onto the entree at midday: Thai scented green lip mussels. The main course, easy handmade pasta with fillet of chicken and green beans, begins at 1pm. At 2pm it’s on to the lemon posset for dessert and finally finishing with Peter’s signature delight, the now world famous avocado chocolate truffles at 3pm.

Each session is short, sharp and to the point and the best part is when Peter is finished cooking, the audience can start tasting.

Designing the perfect dinner partyRedecorating can transform the mood of a room and the Home Show is a great place to get tips

and ideas. The interior design specialists on site

are ready to help you come up with a new look that suits your personality and lifestyle.

Different designers offer different services, from those who want to be involved from the beginning of the structural design phase to people who specialise in coordinating colour schemes and choosing soft furnishings.

Interior designer Marie Mant of Baystyle Interiors has exhibited at the Tauranga Home Show every year since it began. She says most designers agree that when it comes to interiors these days, anything goes. However, there are some key trends.

Neutral ground

The emphasis remains on keeping interiors fairly neutral, but bringing in colour on focal pieces to create interest. Rich, deep reds are popular and laven-ders and mauves are starting to make a comeback, influenced by European style leaders.

In the bedroom, soft colours such as white and duck egg blue are becoming popular. Outline quilted bedding has been a favourite for a few years and seems set to continue to be one in the future.

Wallpaper has seen a renaissance, par-ticularly for use on feature walls. Many interior designers have access to exciting indent wallpapers from overseas that can

be coordinated with fabrics to create a unified theme.

Generally many people’s interiors are reflecting the desire to create a feeling of luxury in the home. Chandeliers and soft, metallic tinged curtains add to a feeling of opulence. Why not recover that antique chair handed down from your mother or grandmother and make it a feature piece?

The best place for an interior designer to start is by taking a look at your home and the Home Show is the perfect time to set up an initial consultation and set the process of transformation in progress.

The region’s gorgeous climate means outdoor entertaining is a huge part of the Bay of Plenty lifestyle. There’s nothing better than relaxing with friends and family in your backyard over a

barbecue and a few drinks. However, today the face of the back-

yard has changed to become a space where you can host dinner parties on a scale never seen before.

Roasting outdoors

Forget the traditional home-built brick barbecue of days gone by. These have been replaced by massive eight-burner gas units complete with hoods that mean you could even slow-cook a roast outdoors if you wanted to. With prices for this style of barbecue coming down all the time, it’s a worthwhile investment – especially if the man in the house thinks cooking outdoors is his domain. Ladies – that means a night off for you!Outdoor wood-fires are also becom-

ing popular and with the addition of a grill you can include the ability to cook pizza or other meals over the

Coffee, Wild Foods and more. Sit back, relax and mull over which

sites you need to go back to while enjoying a little music from 11am-4.30pm each day.

There is also a fun area for the kids where they can play on the bouncy castle or be entertained by the clown, magician or Cuddles the Pink Panther.

fire, making this a practical cooking option as well as a source of heat as the evening cools.

Extended living

The installation of outdoor fireplaces reflects a wider trend towards trans-forming backyards into more than just a simple patch of lawn. Many are now creating entire outdoor rooms, making clever use of creepers and plants, sculptures, and fencing to section off areas. This enables you to shelter an outdoor dining area from the elements while still being able to enjoy the fresh air.

Seating comfort

Bench seating with cushions upholstered appropriately for the outdoors can be a great way to border an outdoor room. However, many people still prefer the traditional table and chairs because they can be moved around to capture or avoid the sun or cater for extra guests.

Whatever look you’re hoping to create, you’ll be sure to get inspira-tion by talking to professionals at this weekend’s Home Show.
