Vice -Chancellor's Message Welcome to the main and regional campus of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak for session 2013-14. Within a short span of its inception, the University has already grown in terms of overall development. The University has been established with an objective to impart higher quality and technical education at the doorstep of students residing in the tribal dominated as well as remote areas with the goal to conduct research on tribal knowledge while preserving it to acclaim national and international recognition. In compliance with the objectives of the University Act, in the infant phase some traditional and professional courses were introduced. At this juncture with the development of own campus and infrastructure, we are determined to introduce new and innovative courses with the support of dedicated and dynamic teachers. From this session onwards, we are introducing many new courses viz. B.A. B.Ed./B.Sc. B.Ed. (Integrated Course), M.B.A, M.B.A. (Tourism Administration), M.Sc. (Botany), M.Sc. (Zoology), M.Sc. (Computer Science) along with Post Graduation courses in almost all the subjects of Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities & Philology. A five year B.A.L.L.B. course will also be introduced soon with the completion of the necessary formalities. Several new courses and facilities are proposed in 12th Five Year Plan including hospitals, medical and agricultural engineering institute. One way with the inclusion of the courses like Hotel Management, Pharmaceutical Science and teaching of Foreign Languages, the University is in pursuit of inculcating business orientation in the minds of students, on the other hand with the introduction of physical education efforts will be made to enthuse students for training and development in sports. We hope, in the 12th Five Years Plan, our University will be allocated more funds to impart quality higher education and better facilities. To ensure school education for the children of the nearby tribal areas and University staff members, allotment of construction for a model school has already been made. As a part of the extension of the hostel facility for the students, in the coming session the hostel accommodation will be increased to 1000 boy and 1000 girl students. The University has started Ph.D. programmes in almost all its Faculties to promote the research and development activities in the new and fundamental fields of knowledge and contribute towards welfare of the society in general and tribal communities in particular. The recent electrification in the University campus will ensure the acceleration in the pace of research and development activities in the University. In less than five years of its foundation, surmounting all sorts of hurdles, it has grown into a dynamic organization and emerging as the state of art institution engaging itself in capacity building, both in terms of infrastructure and human resource development. Being the first and sole tribal University of India, the University has accomplished many magnificent development and stupendous progress in terms of international tie-ups following Memorandum of Understandings (MoU’s) signed with institutions of learning abroad. I invite students across the country to join this institution of national importance dedicated to higher education. Wish you Happy Learning Experience, Prof. C. D. Singh Vice Chancellor

Vice -Chancellor's MessageWelcome to the main and regional campus of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak for session 2013-14.

Several new courses and facilities are proposed in 12th Five Year Plan including hospitals, medical and agricultural engineering institute. THE UNIVERSITY : AN INTRODUCTIONThe Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak was established in 2008. On April 19, 2008, the then HRD Minister Shri Arjun Singh unveiled the foundation stone for providing new direction to youths in the tribal areas and extending the opportunity to the tribes through education and learning. With the inception of the University, Prof. C.D. Singh joined as the founder Vice-Chancellor on July 08, 2008 at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi. The jurisdiction of the University extends to the whole country and it is fully funded by the Central Government through the University Grants Commission. As per the Act, the University has the provision to open regional centres in tribal dominated areas. In compliance to this, the University has already opened one regional campus in Manipur to cater the educational needs of the region and there are several proposals are underway to open new regional centres across the country.

Objectives of the University: i. To provide avenues of higher education and research facilities primarily for the tribal population of India;

ii. To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, medicinal systems, customs, forest based economic activities, flora, fauna and advancement in technologies relating to the natural resources of the tribal areas;

iii. To collaborate with national and international universities or organizations, specially for undertaking cultural studies and research on tribal populations;

iv. To formulate tribal centric development models, publish reports and monographs; and to organize conferences, seminars on issues relating to tribes; and to provide inputs to policy matters in different spheres;

v. To take appropriate measures for promoting the members of tribal communities capable of managing, administering and looking after their own needs by access to higher education through a University of their own;

vi. To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such other branches of learning as it may deem fit;

vii. To take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching learning process in inter-disciplinary studies and research; and to pay special attention to the improvement of social, educational and economic conditions and welfare of the Scheduled Tribes within the Union of India, their intellectual, academic and cultural development.

In view of the objectives of the University the major thrust will be on providing more opportunities to the tribal people. However, the University is open to all sections of the society.

UNIVERSITY HEADQUARTERSThe headquarters of the University is situated at Amarkantak (Madhya Pradesh). Main campus of the University is situated at Lalpur, 20 kms. away from Amarkantak. The campus spreads over an area of nearly 400 acres on the top of hills, surrounded by lush green forests with pollution free environment. Apart from administrative offices it comprises class rooms, teachers chambers, library, computer labs, science laboratories, language lab, anthropological museum, guest house, canteen, shopping complex, medical centre, bank etc. Hostel facility is available for both boys and girls with furnished rooms, mess facilities and 24x7 water and electricity supply.

ABOUT AMARKANTAKSituated at 22º41' N. latitude and 81 º 46" E. longitudes, 1067 metres above the sea level in district of Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh, Amarkantak perches the Mekal Mountain that links the Vindhyan and Satpura ranges. It is about 70 kms away from the district headquarters. Three important rivers i.e. the Narmada, the Son and the Juhila, originate from here forming the lifeline of a major part of the country. The place has its religious importance too. The Kalchuri rulers constructed a cluster of temples that are still intact, of which, Machhendranath and Pataleshwar temples are more important. These temples are protected by The Archaeological Survey of India. There are about 12 temples devoted to goddess Narmada. The Narmada temple is most important among them, which has been built around the springhead of the river. The temple was built by the Bhonsles of Nagpur. Maharaja Gulab Singh belonging to the Baghela dynasty of Rewa constructed the outer boundary wall of the temple complex. The geographical set up of Amarkantak has bestowed upon it the everlasting greenery and serene beauty. The area is covered with sub-tropical hill forest, rich in various flora and fauna. It is one of the rich biodiversity centres and one of the places of tourists' attraction of the state.Various tribal communities like Gond, Baiga, Khariya, Panika etc. inhabit in this area. Apart from these tribal groups some other communities also reside in this area. Their economy is still based food gathering and traditional way of cultivation. Hence, the inhabitants are in constant association with the forest for their daily needs. Each tribal group has its own tradition and culture.

HOW TO REACHAmarkantak is situated at a distance of 30 kms in the west of Pendra Road Railway Station (Chhattisgarh) on Katni-Bilaspur track of South-East Central Railway. Almost all the trains plying on this track stop here. It can be reached by bus from all directions as there is good frequency of buses on Jabalpur, Raipur, Bilaspur, Allahabad, Rewa, Shahdol, Dindori and Anuppur routes. Amarkantak can be reached by air through Jabalpur (M.P.) in the West and Raipur (Chhattisgarh) in the East. However, both the places are almost equidistant, i.e. 230 kms.

REGIONAL CAMPUS, MANIPURThe first Regional Campus of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was established at Imphal, Manipur in 2009. For the permanent establishment of the Campus the State Government of Manipur has provided 300 acres of land in Makhan village, at a distance of 25 kms from Imphal on Imphal- Dimapur National Highway No. 39.
