Preview - The 2020 Racing SeasonWith 2019 coming to a close, it’s about time we take a look and preview 2020. As always, close, hard racing will be expected across the many different historic racing categories that are on offer, and as usual, I’m very sure they will all deliver! 2019 produced great racing and an atmosphere at the various tracks that is in my opinion, unbeatable. These things will be expected in 2020, and I’m sure they’ll deliver. For me, I’m very keen to get the 2020 historic racing proceedings underway, as we’ve already put our entry through for the Phillip Island Classic in March, and I’ve entered for Regularity in Conor Ryan’s mighty Daveric Formula Vee, and ever since I was little I’ve dreamt of driving around the truly magnificent stretch of tarmac that is known as Phillip Island. So, another massive thank you must go to Conor for this incredible opportunity! Also, my uncle Eric Bellamy, has entered for Phillip Island, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing Eric back behind the wheel of the mighty Wren FF after a strong run at Historic Sandown in late October. Overall, 2020 is set to be a great season of historic motorsport, and I, like everyone else I’m sure, am very keen to get proceedings underway! I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas, and wishing everyone all the very best for 2020! A Free Public Lecture - an Aerodynamics Masterclass by Willem Toet (please register using the facebook link, or let me know as soon as possible and I can organise it directly with Willem).

9 January, Monash University, Clayton campus. 5pm for the BBQ and then 6pm for the talk and questions, event finishes at 8pm.

Aerodynamics is normally heavy and full of complex maths. If Willem shows a heavy maths slide, it is really just to wind up those who haven’t read the brief – he won’t be doing any maths. Aerodynamics should be intuitive and, while some aspects are not, Willem will explain some of the concepts behind aerodynamics in a way that everyone can understand. He will give examples of the power that is available to those who know how to play well with aerodynamics, and talk about how Formula 1 teams have used their knowledge of the science of aero to improve lap times and more. But following a race car with aero devices is a challenge – Willem will explain why and how a new set of rules for 2021 opens the door to closer racing. The Formula SAE competition (FSAE) won’t be forgotten either as aerodynamics also

plays a major role in a competitive FSAE car. As well as the talk, there will be time for questions – if you’ve always had a burning question, or you just want to know how to give yourself a better chance of a job in F1, in motorsport, automotive or the aerospace industry, come along and ask some questions. We hope to have employers from industry available too, so, if you’re going to be looking for work any time soon, bring your CV just in case…

If you are thinking about going to university and like the idea of Formula SAE, come early and talk to the Monash team – the most successful team in Australasia in recent years, who won the Formula Student UK event in 2018 against a big field as well.
