ACTION-LINE 3 September 2017

PRESIDENT'S REPORT: DECEMBER

H i All,

Firstly I would like to say thank you for re-electing me as your President for 2018.

Our newly elected committee for 2018 is as follows:

- Ray Dean, President- John Battersby, Vice President- Paul Tierney, Treasurer- Jen Tierney, Secretary

M arc Ducquet, N ic Van Den Berg, M ark Lenstra, Vince M acri, David N oakes and Wayne Rogerson make up the general committee.

I have great confidence in our team, and everyone involved in the club, and am happy to be surrounded by hard working, selfless and, most importantly, friendly people. We will make every effort to move the club forward in a successful way with future events and display days for the benefit of our members.

I would like to take this special opportunity to thank Chris Collett, who has stepped down from his role as Vice President. Chris? hard work and support has been an immeasurable help and has been of great benefit to the club. Chris tells me he is only a phone call away if we need extra input. He is a great colleague and friend and would be an asset to any

club.

As you all know, M ark Broadhead, a colleague and friend to all of us, parted us early this year. M ark consistently came up with good ideas and suggestions, usually with a side of his trademark quick-witted humour, and contributed selflessly and constantly to the club. I have to admit that not a week goes by in which he does not wander into my thoughts.

We have, however, gained another Broadhead?s support in the club. Luke, like his dad, has given himself the pleasure of punishment in a M ini. I have had the opportunity to observe Luke in many races, and he is very neat with a talented right foot similar to his Dad?s. To all those M ini drivers, I would keep a close eye on him!

John Battersby has now recovered from his leg adjustments and assures us that he will be back on the black stuff next year.

We have seen some great racing this year, and driving standards have been excellent as well. We are pleased to have seen minimal damage resulting from cars parking next to each other on the track. M echanical failure on the other hand? Well, they are old race cars and have minds of their own.

All the HTCA news in D ecember, 2017, thanks to Club President Ray D ean

After two years away from the game, I had the pleasure of re- launching my EH Holden at Muscle Car M asters 2017. H as the track changed, or did the driver have a slight mental block? After a few adjustments I went home pleased.

Muscle Car M asters boasted an enjoyable mix of race cars in tin top categories, and our special attraction on Sunday was the Torana Challenge. I?d like to send a big thank you to Paul Tierney, who worked very hard throughout the year to put together a good field including representation from across the country.

I?d like to thank PAYCE and our sponsors who helped with the Torana display marquee. Sue Swain, CEO of Statewide Car Carriers very kindly donated a very large Kenworth car carrier and driver to enable Todd M artin?s display of LJ Toranas in the north paddock.

Home from Muscle Car M asters, I entered the HSRCA?s N ovember Summer Festival. All went well until the head gasket decided it didn?t want to play anymore. As I said, these are old race cars and are meant to test us.

Entries at the HSRCA meeting were down due to the clash with Sandown and proximity to Muscle Car M asters. All in all it was a good meeting, and those who attended enjoyed some very close racing. I only sighted two cars exchanging paint ? a certain Galaxie and an FJ Holden. N o injuries, only money to be spent at the repair shop.

All of our point score rounds have carried the PAYCE windscreen banner. Brian Boyd, CEO of PAYCE, and PAYCE M otorsport M anager Bill Smith have attended point score rounds and enjoyed the racing. We have also had our new club shirts produced for all members, with thanks to the support of PAYCE.

I?d like to send a special thanks to Brian Boyd for the continued support he has given HTCA. I look forward to our

continued association with PAYCE and will continue to work to improve our relationship and the support we provide PAYCE.

Our 2017 presentation dinner was held at Concept 33 in Rooty H ill on Saturday the 18th of N ovember. 90 guests joined us for the evening, which included a beautiful display of our race cars.

We were very privileged to be joined by Don and Judith Holland. M ost of you would know of Don, who raced from 1961 in a M ini 850, M azda RX3, LC XU I, LJ XU I, SLR 5000 and the famous L34 Toranas. Don shared stories of his past as well as his current involvement with Formula Ford, and very kindly presented trophies to the 2017 placegetters. Thank you Don!

At the presentation dinner we also offered some items for auction, including three B Double model transporters displaying the Appendix J and HTCA era, along with some mystery boxes.

The auction items were purchased by:

- Sue Swain ? Mystery box and B Double transporter

- Martin Macri ? Mystery box and B Double Transporter

- Vince Macri ? Mystery box- Bob Mundy ? B Double Transporter

Thank you to all who bid on and won items!

With that, it?s time to move on to the rest of the magazine.

Thank you to EVERYONE for all of your support, effort and friendship throughout 2017. Have a happy, safe and relaxed summer break, and we?ll see you in 2018!

With 2017 rapidly wrapping up, Group N have completed another classic Muscle Car M asters and it?s time to look back at everything that took place over the weekend.

Even though the weekend featured enjoyable and mostly incident-free racing, we are left to ponder on whether the event has lost some of its original momentum. Some points to be considered are whether races are too long and the gaps between them too lengthy.

Additionally, M arc Ducquet recognized that the meeting lacked good quality commentary for the Group N events and offered his services to commentate. This sadly did not take place due to equipment failure.

We still achieved positive outcomes, such as re-engaging with our interstate friends from Western Australia, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia. M any thanks to those from interstate who turned out to showcase their vehicles.

A notable absence were the Victoria-based vehicles due to a clash with the Sandown meeting, which was a little disappointing.

H olden Torana X U1 Anniversary Feature H ighlight

This year?s feature was the 45th anniversary of the Holden Torana XU1, enticing a large entry of these vehicles representing various states. The feature event of the meeting was a Holden Torana-only race with 23 similar type vehicles taking part.

Torana-Only Race Results

1. Simon Phillips, Holden Torana XU12. John Wright, Holden Torana XU1 3. Greg Luca, Holden Torana GTR

The Torana race proved to be an exciting event. A Queensland VS N SW battle took place at the front, with Queensland?s Simon Phillips dicing with our own John Wright and Greg Luca hot on their tails and keeping them honest.

Early on Phillips held a reasonable lead, but towards the end of the race the two white N SW Toranas began to close the gap. Around the back of Corporate H ill John Wright pitched the car sideways in his efforts, with Greg Luca almost able to pass his fellow statesman. Phillips must have heard the call, pushing and again stretching out a small lead to win by about three car lengths from Wright and Luca.

It was pleasing to see the large turnout of people at the trophy presentation. Special thank you to racing legend Don Holland, who was on hand to present the merchandise to the worthy participants.

Celebratory Saturday afternoon food and dr inks

After the conclusion of Saturday?s racing Group N drivers and friends gathered to share some fine food in celebration of another successful Muscle Car M asters. We all gathered and socialised with our interstate visitors and their families, sharing stories and good times.

We also had the privilege of the spiritual presence of M otorsport Chaplain M r. R ichard Cormack, as always spreading his wisdom on the positive outlook on life.

A great weekend of racing and celebrations made possible with the support of PAYCE, Statewide Car Carriers and some individual contributors. This support provided for, amongst other things, the Holden Torana marquee including the individual drivers name plaques. Again the PAYCE arch also provided an excellent photographic advertising opportunity to improve the status of the PAYCE brand name.

The club committee did some amazing work in the background to organise the cars, posters, banners and photographs that completed the tribute.

Behind the Scenes

M ini Cooper S driver David Wheatley had a disastrous weekend, transporting the car home to facilitate an engine swap only to return to the track and face 2 DN F results, including one in which his front wheel parted company with the vehicle.

The challenge of the early Holden representatives over the weekend witnessed an extraordinary result for the Tasmanian EH Holden driver Phil Shepard, who claimed exceptional finishes in all events. In one event Phil Taylor and Claude Ciccotelli decided to start from pit lane to see if they could gain an advantage in an effort to catch Shepard, but unfortunately the strategy did not work, although Ciccatelli did finish in front of Taylor this year.

The EH Holdens of Adrian M acri and Steve Pitman unfortunately suffered engine failure as did a number of other 6-cylinder Holden competitors.

The HSRCA conducted the Summer Festival historic race meeting in perfect spring conditions over the weekend of the 10th to the 12th of N ovember. The event kicked off the H istoric Touring Car Association?s 2018 race season with round 1 of the upcoming season.

The event was a relaxed and fairly low-key affair, following close on the heels of Muscle Car M asters. Although it drew a somewhat depleted Group N grid, we still enjoyed a good weekend?s racing and the event boasted a very relaxed and summery atmosphere.

The annual appearance of Western Australian driver Paul Stubber in his Camaro was a notable highlight, featuring the usual display of impressive driving skills. Even though he recorded a couple of DN Fs over the weekend, he still managed to set a new lap record for the Sydney M otorsport Park Gardner layout.

Group N Qualifying results

Combined N c Qualifying on Saturday morning was led by Paul Stubber?s Camaro on a 1.47.6, followed by Spencer R ice in the Alfa Romeo 1.48.5 and then Allan Burke in the XY GT Falcon.

In combined N b qualifying M ichael Rose was on the money in the Ford Mustang, recording a 1.53.1 lap to be the quickest of the N b representatives. David M oran in a similar vehicle secured the second spot on the front row with a 1.53.9 and the Valiant Charger of Craig Robertson completed the top three with 1.54.5.

Following on from the DN F in Race 2, Paul Stubber started from the rear of the grid and set about purposefully to guide the yellow Camaro through the field. Unfortunately he ended up making light contact with the Burke XY Falcon in turn one, although the drivers were able to continue. Stubber pressed on to establish a commanding lead only to retire with a deflating tyre due to the earlier body contact.

After an impressive start in this event, at one stage leading by at least half a lap, the Stubber Chevrolet Camaro suffered gear linkage failure and failed to finish.

With only 5 finishers in this event and M ichael Rose in his Ford Mustang failing to finish it was a disappointing rollup for the final event.

Holding the unusual distinction of being both the final meeting of the year and the first round of the 2018 season, the Summer Festival was a pleasant and relaxed weekend that allowed a dedicated group of competitors to get out and enjoy their cars, and some very good company, one last time in 2017. We very much appreciate everyone?s support throughout the year and look forward to a magnificent 2018 season.

All the best for a relaxed and rejuvenative holiday break for both drivers and cars and a happy, healthy and successful 2018!

ACTION-LINE 33 September 2017

An exceptionally strong field of Group N competitors, including strong representation from both Queensland and Victoria, made the trek to Wakefield Park in Goulburn this September for the HSRCA?s Spring Festival. Amongst the field was the largest group of Ford Escort competitors ever to assemble at the circuit.

As the large entry was over maximum track density for the circuit, organisers split the grids into up to three-litre and over three-litre categories. This was very successful and proved popular with many competitors.

Pr ivate Pract ice, Fr iday 1st Septem ber

During practice there was a serious incident when the Ben Wilkinson Ford Mustang, driven by Chris O?Brien from the ACT, had a gearbox failure, which locked the rear wheels and sent the car spinning into the dry long grass. We have seen very little rainfall through the winter, and the hot exhaust was enough to set the grass aflame.

Vince M acri and Andrew Taite immediately stopped their vehicles on the circuit and proceeded to assist in bringing the fire under control. Their quick actions saved the car from being destroyed. Thank you to both Vince and Andrew for your quick actions, and to all involved in bringing this incident under control quickly, safely and successfully.

Under 3-L itre Qualifying

Wayne Rogerson in the M azda RX2 rose to the top in under three-litre qualifying with a strong 1:09 lap. The next three times all fell in the 1:10s, with M ark Lenstra in second with a 1:10, David N oakes third with a 1:10.04 and Alan M ayne a hair behind at 1:10.6.

Very close times all ?round and a promise of close racing to come.

Under 3-L itre Race 1

Long-time M azda RX2 campaigners Wayne Rogerson and Alan M ayne went on to lock out the top two spots in race 1, besting the large field of Ford Escort representatives. David N oakes claimed the last step on the podium in the Ford Escort R S 1600, stretching out some clear air between himself and the Ford Escort of M ark Lenstra.

Under 3- l i t re Race 2

N ew South Wales members featured strongly in the results of race 2, with the

win again going to the Rogerson M azda and Alan M ayne following in second. This time out, M ark Lenstra was able to steer the Escort into third ahead of David N oakes.

Deeper into the order and the M ini Cooper S of Graham Russell and Ford Escort of Wayne Stratford had a close encounter when Russell made an uncharacteristic mistake to run off the edge of the circuit, spearing back on a hair?s breadth from the Stratford Escort.

Stratford was not quite in the clear, however and would survive another challenge later in the race when Peter Van Summeren made a move down the inside, coming in too hot and exiting the track into the dust.

Under 3-L itre Race 3

The Rogerson and M ayne show would continue in race 3, with the pair claiming first and second yet again. N ew South Welshman David N oakes came home in third.

Over 3-L itre Qualifying

Qualifying for the over three-litre cars saw Andrew Taite in the Chevrolet Camaro claiming pole position with a 1:07.1. He narrowly edged out Australian motorsport icon John Bowe, who circumnavigated Wakefield Park in 1:07.05.

Jamie Tilley led the second row with a 1:08.2, while John Wright put his Holden Torana on fourth with a 1:08.9.

Over 3-L itre Race 1

Victorian John Bowe made the most of his driving experience in the first over three-litre race, winning from Andrew Taite in the Chev Camaro. Taite didn?t make it easy for him, however, more than keeping him honest for the first half of the race. He ran wide at the end of the straight, allowing the Bowe Mustang to stretch its legs up the hill and pull out a margin.

John Wright had a chance to slip by the Camaro, but eventually fell into the clutches of the Jamie Tilley Mustang, which crossed the line in third, relegating the Wright Torana XU1 to fourth.

Over 3-L itre Race 2

Andrew Taite and Peter O?Brien put in brilliant drives in race two to unseat John Bowe and send him back to third place, Taite winning in the Camaro and O?Brien claiming second in the Ford Falcon XY. Jamie Tilley was fourth home.

Over 3-L itre Race 3

Over three-litre racing proved extremely competitive, with the order shifting up yet again in race 3. Taite led the field home, while Jamie Tilley was able to bring his Mustang into second ahead of the O?Brien Falcon XY. The Wilkinson Mustang being driven by Chris O?Brien was hot on his heels in fourth.

Com bined Nc & N b for Race 4

With some competitors seeking an early mark to get the cars packed up and on trailers for the road trip home, a smaller field of combined N c and N b competitors assembled to take the start of the fourth race on Sunday afternoon.

Andrew Taite was dominant once again, winning the final race of the weekend and leading Jamie Tilley in the Mustang. Tilley had pulled out quite a gap from the next dice, which included third-place finisher Wayne Rogerson in the RX2 and Andrew Whiteside in a Ford Mustang.

M ichael Rose led the N b group in his Ford Mustang, followed by the M ini Cooper S of Douglas Burton and Ralph Clarke?s lovely Alfa Romeo Guilia.
