From the VFW Commander’s Corner

Good day to everyone.

I am very concerned about our Post and you should be

too, as I will explain. I am both discouraged and sad at the

participation from the members and patrons. We only

have an average of five people for our meetings, no one

seems to want to get involved, and that is having a

negative reaction to our survival.

Many of you think that we are doing just fine, well, we

are to a point. But everything we worked and strived for

could come to an end if we don’t act and do something,

it’s not a laughing matter and it should be taken seriously.

As Commander, I have exhausted all my ideas and

suggestions, and I don’t know what else I can do to help

our Post.

We have made a lot of improvements, like fantastic

dinners, NFL package, which may have been bad timing

and our canteen has been at a steady profit for several

months, thanks to Don Williams and the rest of his staff

and the service they provide.

But the reality is this. We are in danger of losing our

Post if we don’t meet certain criteria that is required by

the VFW District. We don’t have enough filled officer

positions and program leaders. This should be a concern

for those who don’t take interest in Post activities. You

need to start thinking of the future of our Post now

because most of the current officers will not be there next

year. They are tired of the non-support of the people, and

that includes myself. The only thing that will save this

Post, is your participation and support by getting involved.

If we lose our Post, it will be our fault and we have only

us to blame.

In closing, this is a letter that was very hard for me to

write, and I can see an outcome that makes me sad, but I

have never been a quitter and don’t intend to start now. I

am going to try to save our Post, with or without you,

because I care!

Mike Moore, Post Commander.

VFW Post Chaplain’s Message

Let’s keep all Veterans and their families in our

thoughts and our hearts. Also pray for our National

Home and any of our members or associates in need.

Please remember our member and officer oaths. Our

Word is our honor. We encourage visits for every

member in distress. God Bless.

Jim Russell, VFW Post Chaplain

VFW Auxiliary Chaplain’s Corner

On October twelfth we said farewell to our lovely and

gracious member, Jeanette Puthuff. Jan was a member of

our Auxiliary for 39 years and was also our guard for the

last several years. She always smiled and greeted

everyone. She was loved by all. Jeanette was a native of

Lindsay, CA before moving to Fair Oaks. She lived to 84

years, was a loving wife for 59 years to Bill Puthuff,

cherished mother of Ronald (Shelly) McGill, Donald

(Amy) Puthuff, and Vickie Teague, grandmother of six

grandchildren, and great-grandmother of 14. Jan will be

missed by all.

I have stepped in to take over the chaplain position. I

hope to do a great job. If you have questions – give me a

call at 916-470-0493. I would like to know when any of

our members are ill, in the hospital, or dying. Cards or

flowers are sent, or a visit if that is what the person wants.

Can’t do it if I am not informed.

We are here to help our VFW members if needed.

Thought for today: Nourish your dreams. Believe there

is always something to look forward to. God is just a

prayer away.

Terri Collette, VFW Auxiliary Chaplain, 916-470-0493

VFW Auxiliary President

Hello Everyone: Starting off, I want to say that you are going to see

and hear me using the word “our” a lot. Why? Because this is Our Post, and Our Auxiliary is here to SUPPORT OUR POST, to SUPPORT OUR VETERANS, their families and Veteran programs. Our Post Commander, Mike Moore, needs help from all of us. Be supportive, help in whatever way you can, every little bit helps.

Our next VFW Post 6158 House Committee Meeting will be held on Tue. November. 7th at 7 pm. Please plan to attend if you have any suggestions, ideas or input that will benefit our Post.

Our next Auxiliary Meeting will be Tuesday, November. 14th. Please plan on attending, support our Auxiliary, I will have some special gifts and awards for our members in attendance. Pay attention, the word “our” is very important, especially in this article!

Our next Auxiliary Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, November 15th at 11:30 am at Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, 300 Palladio Parkway in Folsom. This is in the Palladio at Iron Point Rd. on E. Bidwell Street.

Our next District 17 meeting will be held on Saturday, November 18th at VFW Post 8762, 905 Drever Street, West Sacramento. The meeting will begin at 9:30 am. Our Department President, Traci Lewis Ventress, and State Commander, Wayne Wright, will be here for their annual official visit. Our Auxiliary has been asked to bring a raffle prize to support our District’s Ways and Means program. I am looking forward to attending and if you plan to attend and would like to car pool, I have room to take five, please let me know. Lunch will be available following the meeting hosted by VFW & Auxiliary #8762.

Our Events for November: Come to our Veterans Day Pot Luck Dinner, Saturday.

November 11th at 4 pm. Something special is planned. Celebrate our Thanksgiving Pot Luck Dinner with us

on Thursday, November 23rd. (see flyer)

Our Observances: We had a fantastic dinner on Sept. 13th as we celebrated the Air Force’s Birthday! I want to thank everyone who attended. The entire dining room was decorated, the cake was beautiful and it was so nice to have everyone enjoying dinner together in the dining room again. Our Post members and Auxiliary are awesome!

On Oct. 12th we again celebrated during dinner, this time it was in celebration of the Navy’s Birthday, which was the next day, Oct. 13th.

At our dinners, every Monday and Thursday nights we have Karaoke and I am proud to say that the first song that is sung is “God Bless America”. Everyone proudly stands and joins in as the song is led by Hazel Moses. Thank you so much Hazel.

Other news: Our Auxiliary’s annual inspection by District was held

an hour prior to our October meeting, everything went

well, as did our meeting that followed, we had a good attendance and it was a pleasure to have our District President, Carla Powers, attending. We got a wonderful report. Thank you to all the members that attended.

Membership Reminder: – If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to get your annual dues paid as soon as possible. Help strengthen our Auxiliary, recruit new members! I challenge each of our Auxiliary members to recruit at least one new member during the month of November, I know you can do it!

School of Instruction: For all our Auxiliary Officers and Committee Chairman Post 6158 I will be holding a School of Instruction. Please attend one of the two dates and times below:

Friday, November. 3rd at 6:30 pm or Sunday, November. 5th at 1 pm, at our Post. Volunteers Needed: We need volunteers for our

Veterans Day Pot Luck and Thanksgiving Dinner Pot Luck to help decorate, set up and clean up. Plans are also being made for our Christmas party, New Year’s Eve party and events in 2018: the up-coming Crab Feed in February, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, the Spring Craft Fair, and the Annual Auxiliary Yard/Rummage Sale, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and more. Please come to the House Committee meeting (see calendar) or come to the volunteer and planning meetings scheduled for the 1st Sunday of every month at noon at our Post.

Toys for Tots: December 1st through December 15th we will be collecting unwrapped toys for Veteran and active service member families for Christmas. Please have your toys at the Post for our meeting on December 12th or at the latest by Friday, December 15th. If not during meeting time, please leave them at the Post canteen. Gail Dettmar, Auxiliary President, (916) 715-2195
