A pilotfrom Ennis, Texas, George SkipperGoddard and his nine-man crew hadsuccessfully deployed their bombs buthad sustained heavy damage and werefalling behind the other aircraft. The

temperature was 20 degrees belowzero as they began to take on heavygunfire from pursuing Bf109EMesserchmitts. The guns on the planewere frozen, and one engine was onfire. They considered turning the

plane toward Switzerland when sud-denly the B-24 exploded, blasting all10 men out toward the earth and cer-tain death over the snow-coveredDubec Hill in the Chejlava woods ofCzechoslovakia.

That day in the nearby village ofChocenice gathered a group celebrat-ing the wedding of a young couple.

    However,all were

found thatone of the planes gunmen Ray Noury, whose parachute had partially openedhad plunged into a snow bank and, though badly injured, had survived. The villagers took him down the hillon a makeshift stretcher attached to apair of skis but had no choice but toturn him over to their German occu-piers. Ray Noury would spend thenext 15 months in a prisoner of warcamp.

Congrats,Charlene Kirby!A big congratulations to Char-

lene (Volcik) Kirby of SPJST Lodge54, West! She is the winner of a bas-ket full of Czech goodies, generouslydonated by Texas Czech Genealogi-cal Society. Charlene is one of morethan 1,100 members who completed

and mailed in their SPJST MemberUpdate from the 2012 SPJST calen-dar. Her name was drawn at theSPJST Awards Banquet held January28 in Temple.

Thanks to each and every memberwho returned this important update. We appreciate you taking the time tocomplete the form and return it to us.

Thanks, TCGS!Before the SPJST Awards Ban-

quet, I had the honor and pleasure tospeak at the Texas Czech Genealog-ical Societys annual meeting held inCaldwell. My topic was SPJSTVestnik Archiving the Past for theFuture. What a warm welcomeDavid and I received from the mo-ment we drove into the parking lot.

Part of my presentation coveredthe history of SPJST newspaperssince 1897. One of the first items inthe first SPJST convention was es-tablishing a newspaper as a means of

communication for members. In1912, convention delegates approvedthe Vestnik as SPJSTs own inde-pendent newspaper a traditionthat proudly continues today. TheVestnikhas been published weeklysince 1916, and it has been and con-tinues to be a valuable medium.

Last year, SPJST and TCGS part-nered to archive all past availableVestniks. The issues have beenscanned. Rescans will take place inthe next few months. Then, the Vest-niks will be uploaded to a searchabledatabase and be available for re-search.

The Vestnikcan put flesh on thebones of so many Czech family trees

better than many other records, andthis ambitious project to digitize thevast collection will reveal untoldtreasures that have laid buried inSPJST archives for, in some cases,100 years.

At the click of a button, you willbe able to search on a name or a

place and get further in 10 minutesthan you would have done in 10 daysof microfilm and paper searching.Anyone who eventually uses theVestnikonline resource or any otherdigitized newspaper archive will ap-preciate the value of this.

So, gather up the names of yourancestors. Write yourself a big, longlist. Very soon, you will be able tovisit www.spjst.org to access thiswonderful collaboration betweenTCGS and SPJST. And, the greatthing is, even if you dont find muchsoon after we launch it, theres moreto come. About 150,000 pages areset to go online this year during theVestniks 100th anniversary. Watchthe Vestnikfor when the site will beready.

Thank you, TCGS, for the warmhospitality and for this grand oppor-tunity.

    Get Well Soon, Roy

We send get well thoughts andprayers to SPJST Financial SecretaryRoy Vajdak. Roy slipped on thestairs at his apartment complex andtore his quadriceps tendon. He is un-dergoing surgery on February 15 torepair the tear. Best wishes, Roy, fora speedy recovery.

    Prime Seasonfor Tax Scams

    by Texas Attorney GeneralGreg Abbott

Tax season can be a particularly ac-tive time for identity thieves, because

tax returns contain all the informationthey need Social Security numbers, names, addresses, employer informa-tion, investment account numbers toopen fraudulent accounts in a taxpayersname or steal a taxpayers income taxrefund. Fortunately, taxpayers can avoidbecoming identity theft victims by stay-ing informed and avoiding common taxschemes.

Avoid phishing scams. Phishingrefers to fraudulent emails and websitesthat identity thieves create in an effort to

trick victims into providing sensitivepersonally identifying information. Thescam usually begins with a misleadingemail that appears to come from a fi-nancial institution, tax preparation firmor government agency. The email typi-cally claims that highly sensitive per-sonal information such as a SocialSecurity number or account number isneeded to ensure that a taxpayers in-come tax return can be processed.

Taxpayers should be particularlywary of emails that claim to come fromthe IRS. The IRS does not initiate con-tact with taxpayers by email to requestpersonal or financial information sotaxpayers should never respond toemails that appear to be seeking infor-mation for the IRS.

Taxpayers should also delete scamemails that claim to come from the Elec-tronic Federal Tax Payment System(EFTPS), a legitimate tax payment sys-tem that allows individuals and busi-nesses to pay federal taxes

electronically. According to the IRS, thescam email claims that tax paymentsmade by the taxpayer through EFTPShave been rejected. The email directs thetaxpayer to a bogus website that down-loads malicious software onto the tax-payers computer. The malware isdesigned to retrieve personal and finan-cial information already stored on thetaxpayers computer and scammersuse the information to commit identitytheft.

    Safeguard computers, mobile de-

vices. Securing computers and mobilephones is crucial to thwarting identity

thieves. Taxpayers should password-protect their computer and update theircomputers anti-virus software.

Scammers may also send bogus textmessages that claim to be from the IRS.By sending unsolicited tax-related text

messages, identity thieves are attempt-ing to exploit taxpayers who believe thatonly a legitimate contact like an IRSagent would have their mobile phonenumber. Unfortunately, this false senseof security makes taxpayers more likelyto click on a link in the bogus text mes-sage.

Taxpayers should remember that theIRS does not use email or text messagesto contact taxpayers about issues relatedto their accounts. Official taxpayer con-tact usually includes a letter on IRS sta-

tionery in an IRS envelope. IRS lettersalso contain a contact phone number.Research tax preparation services.

Before providing personal and financialinformation to a tax return preparationprofessional, taxpayers should take fourimportant steps: 1) ask for the tax pre-parers credentials; 2) check with theBetter Business Bureau for complaintsagainst the tax preparer; 3) verifywhether the tax preparer is a certifiedpublic accountant; and 4) confirm thatthe business is open year-round in theevent taxpayers need to ask follow-upquestions about their income tax returns.

As with any contractual agreement,Texans should carefully read the fineprint before entering into a financialtransaction involving their incometaxes. Taxpayers who understand thenature of these agreements are morelikely to make informed decisions that

just might save some of their hard-earned money.

For example, Texans should alwaysavoid tax preparation services thatguarantee the largest possible tax re-turn. Under federal law, any deductionstax preparers make for their clients mustbe accurate and legally permissible. Taxpreparers that submit false informationin order to obtain larger refunds for aclient (and higher fees for the preparer)put their clients in legal jeopardy. Com-petent, legitimate tax preparers will nothesitate to sign their clients tax return.

Know the truth about frivolous taxarguments. Although many prefer not

to pay their taxes, it is well settled lawthat federal income taxes are NOT vol-untary. United States courts have re-peatedly rejected some of the morecommon false legal arguments madeby those who oppose compliance withfederal income tax laws, including con-tentions that taxpayers can refuse to payincome taxes on religious or moralgrounds by invoking the First Amend-ment; that only federal governmentemployees are subject to federal in-come taxes; and that only foreign-

    source income is taxable.SPJST

    Lesson 7

Read the following out loud. Getyour parents, grandparents, rela-tives, or friends to help you with thepronunciation. Clip and save eachlesson and compile into a notebook.

dkujithank youprosmyou are welcome (meansplease, but used instead of Englishyou are welcome)rdo se staloI was glad to do itnen zadont mention it

ekuji is singular. Sometimes it is asdkuju. Dkuji is more proper and is

more often used. Plural is dkujeme. It is not necessary to add an equivalentof you, but it could be done, and it isoften done. Then, it is dkuji ti whenwe are close to the person addressed,or dkuji Vm if the relation to the per-son addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the worddkuji is the word prosm. Rdo se

stalo and neni zais used similar to Iwas glad to do it, or dont mentionit, in America.

Dovolte prosmwith your permis-sion, (please), pardon me (please) od-puste (prosm)excuse me, (please)promite (prosm)I am sorry, par-

don me.nic se nestaloit was nothing

The wordprosm is the most common

courtesy word. The original is, I begyou and only from the context canyou tell whether the word prosmmeans I beg you, or whether itserves as please. Prosm, is shownin parenthesis because its use is op-tional, making it more polite.

The words odpuste and promitemean practically the same. The infor-mal address would bepromi and od-pust to be used only with thosepersons with whom you are on athou basis. The thou and youbasis sounds archaic in English, butthere is an important difference in therelation between persons whom weaddress thou in Czech, ty (the verb tykati si), and persons we ad-dress you in Czech vy and, therefore, the verb describing the rela-

    tion is vykati si.

    To have somethingup your sleeve

Hello, and welcome to anotheredition of SoundCzech, a pro-gramme in which you can learn newCzech idioms with the help of songlyrics. Todays song lyrics comefrom a duet by the Czech ever-greens Karel Gott and Lucie Blfrom their 1997 hit album Duets. The phrase to watch for is co zalubem m?.

Co za lubem m?, Karel Gott asksLucie Bl. He is wondering what kindof mischief shes up to because mtnco za lubem means to be up to mon-key business. It doesnt necessarilyhave to be something negative; it canbe something naughty, cheeky, orplayful. The closest English equivalentwould be to have something up onessleeve. The phrase is generally usedwhen you are wondering what some-one is up to, when you dont knowwhat it is, but you suspect there issomething funny going on. In thesong, Karel Gott believes that he cantell what Lucie Bl is up to - co m zalubem.

I must admit that I never reallythought about what the phrase meansliterally, and when I sat down to write

this edition of SoundCzech, I realizedthat, despite being a Czech nativespeaker, I had no idea what the wordlub actually stands for. So I did a bit ofresearch, and here is what I found:

lub is an expression used for a specialwooden vessel or container that wasused in the old days for milling flour.Inside the vessel, there were severaljoints and the finest-grained flourwould stick in the nooks and crannies.

The miller knew very well that the fineflour was hiddenza lubem in the

hidden crannies of the lub andwould shrewdly keep it for his ownuse. Therefore, when you have some-thing za lubem then you hide your

wicked intentions from the others sothat they dont know what you are upto and cant wreck your plans.

It is not onlyza lubem that you cankeep something. In Czech, you canalso say mt za uima literally tohave it behind your ears meaningthat you are smart in a foxy, shrewdway.

Another place where you can, so tosay, keep your cleverness is under

your cap pod epic. When some-one has it under his cap then he issmart, clever, and resourceful andknows his way around.

Well, I have no idea what you arehiding under your cap or behindyour ears but I have to go now, sothanks for listening and na shledanou.
