2 | THE CHRONICLE - AUGUST 2018
Staff Notes
Director’s Desk
Alasa and I have been spending the last couple of
months watching a lot of baseball games. Her sons,
Hunter and Saxton, and my grandson, Gavin, play
on opposing teams in Stoughton’s Little League, and
Hunter and Gavin are teammates on Stoughton’s
Traveling Team, playing in weekend tournaments in
neighboring communities, including Verona. It all
adds up to a lot of time outside in the summer sun.
The spectators are a mix - moms and dads cheering
and taking pictures, younger siblings laughing and
running around, teens chatting with friends, cute
puppies, and grandparents like me, settled comfort-
ably into lawn chairs. It’s a snapshot of the best of
small town USA, everyone turning out to support a
group of young boys playing America’s game. The
players are learning a lot about teamwork, backing
each other up, cheering each other on, and being
responsible for their actions, good or bad. They
make a great catch… or bobble the ball. They hit a
home run… or strike out. They pitch well… they
pitch wildly. Sometimes they make a great catch.
Sometimes they make the last out. Once in a while,
they get hit by the ball, and it smarts. There might
be a few tears, but when their coach calls out kind-
ly, “shake it off”, they get up and go on playing. As I
sit there on the sidelines, I can’t help but think that
spending the summer playing Little League is great
preparation for life. Work together as a team,
practice, and learn from your mistakes. Give it
your all. Encourage each other. It’s fine to be
proud when you make a great play, but on those
days when the ball hits you, get up, shake it off, and
go on. Tomorrow is new inning, a fresh chance to
apply all that you’ve learned and try again. Play Ball!

AUGUST is here and many of us are doing
lots of outdoor cooking and picnics. There
are ways you can minimize your family’s risk
of food poisoning by following some simple
guidelines about food safety.
TOP SUMMER FOOD SAFETY TIPS
CLEAN: Wash hands and surfaces often to
avoid the spread of bacteria.
SEPARATE: Keep raw foods separate
from cooked foods to avoid cross-
contamination.
COOK: Make sure you kill harmful bacteria
by cooking food until it reaches the proper
temperature. (Hamburger 71degrees C.
(172F); and Poultry at 74 degrees C.(178F).
Reheat leftovers to at least 165 degrees F.
Always use a meat thermometer.
CHILL: Keep cold foods cold at 4 degrees
Centigrade (approx..32-38F) or colder.
Letting food sit at unsafe temperatures puts
you at risk for foodborne illnesses.
Keep Hot foods Hot and Cold foods Cold!
Remember the 2-hour rule. Keep ALL raw
meat wrapped separately. Always use a
meat thermometer. Chill leftovers as soon
as possible and reheat them to at least 165
degrees.
Have a great time at that next bar-be-que
and picnic by being safe!!

Case Manager News
15 | VERONA SENIOR CENTER
A big thanks to our case manager Kim for her
compassion and dedication to those we serve.
She’ll be missed, but I know she will do great in
her new position. Thank You Kim!
In the event of a power outage or another
emergency, and if you rely on oxygen or have a
medical condition that limits you to safely exit
your home independently, call me and I will relay
this information to the Dane County
Communication Center (911). They will add
this information to your address so first
responders are aware.
Make sure that the physician or specialist you
are going to is a preferred provider in your
insurance network. Recently, I have run into a
few clients that have been seeing doctors that
they thought were in network, and they weren’t,
which caused them unnecessary out of pocket
costs. Unless you have Medicaid or a managed
care plan such as Care Wisconsin, double check
that your doctors are in your preferred
insurance network. Call me if you’d like me to
review it with you.
???? Remember that time 5 years ago when you
were really upset? Does it really matter now?
What would you do differently if you knew
nobody would judge you? Are you more
worried about doing things right, or doing the
right thing? If you could give your younger self
advice, what would it be? If life is short, then
why do we do so many things we don’t like and
like so many things we don’t do?
“We make our world significant by the
courage of our questions and by the depth
of our answers.” – Carl Sagan

It was a very difficult decision but I have
accepted a job with the Department of
Corrections and my last day at the Senior
Center will be July 13.
The Verona Senior Center is truly a
special place, which I recognized when I
was an intern here in 2015-2016. It is the
reason that I continued to be connected to
the organization as a volunteer for the
evening caregiver’s support group and
offering free therapy services during my last
year of graduate school.
I accepted the Case Manager position in
March. I have enjoyed helping and
connecting with the wonderful seniors and
volunteers at the Center and
representatives in the local community.
The staff, Board, and seniors here are
committed and dedicated to making the
Center a wonderful place with great
programs, activities, and services. The
Center helps all of you remain physically
and mentally active and connected, allowing
you to age with dignity, support, and health.
I will miss you and wish you all the best
(and don’t be surprised if you see me
around again as a volunteer or just visiting
friends).
Kim Crowell
Kim, Thank you and best wishes on all
your future endeavors! Mary Hanson
