TIDBITS® SAYS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO

NOVEMBER BABIESby Kathy Wolfe

Here’s a little research from Tidbits on all these folks, past and present, who claim November as their birth month. • Probably best known for her role as Dr. Izzie

Stevens on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” actress Katherine Heigl got her start as a child model posing for the Sears catalog. She moved on from this $75-per-hour job to her first commercial, a TV spot for Cheerios. Although she has recently starred in several movie blockbusters, she also has the honor of having starred in the lowest-earning movie in recorded history, 2006’s “Zyzzyx Road,” which grossed $30 at the box office.

• The parents of Condoleezza Rice took her name from an Italian music-related term con dolcezza, which translates “with sweetness.” The life of this 66th U.S. Secretary of State was filled with music from the age of three, when she began music, figure skating, French and ballet lessons. At 15, it was her goal to become a concert pianist. Switching her college major to political science set the stage for many of her achievements. However, she has never abandoned her music, still practicing every day, and she even accompanied the celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Constitution Hall at a National Medal of Arts Awards recital.

ArIes (March 21 to April 19) You’re moving from a relatively stable situation to one that appears to be laced with perplexity. Be patient. You’ll eventually get answers to help clear up the confusion around you.TAUrUs (April 20 to May 20) A vexing situation tempts you to rush to set it all straight. But it’s best to let things sort themselves out so that you can get a better picture of the challenge you’re facing.GeMINI (May 21 to June 20) Financial matters could create some confusion, especially with a torrent of advice pouring in from several sources. Resist acting on emotion and wait for the facts to emerge.CANCer (June 21 to July 22) That goal you’ve set is still in sight and is still in reach. Stay with the course that you’re on. Making too many shifts in direction now could create another set of problems.Leo (July 23 to August 22) It might be time to confront a trouble-making associate and demand some answers. But be prepared for some surprises that could lead you to make a change in some long-standing plans.VIrGo (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. You’re making great progress in sorting out all that confusion that kept you from making those important decisions. You’re on your way now.LIBrA (September 23 to October 22) A difficult experience begins to ease. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is a possible complication that could prolong the problem awhile longer.sCorPIo (October 23 to November 21) Your self-confidence gets a much-needed big boost as you start to unsnarl that knotty financial problem. Expect some help from a surprising source.sAGITTArIUs (November 22 to December 21) Congratulations. Any lingering negative aftereffects from that not-so-pleasant workplace situation are all but gone. It’s time now to focus on the positive.CAPrICorN (December 22 to January 19) Your self-confidence grows stronger as you continue to take more control of your life. Arrange for some well-earned fun and relaxation with someone special.AQUArIUs (January 20 to February 18) As usual, you’ve been concerned more about the needs of others than your own. You need to take time for yourself so that you can replenish all that spent energy.PIsCes (February 19 to March 20) Stronger planetary influences indicate a growing presence of people eager to help you navigate through the rough seas that might mark your career course.

→ On Oct. 19, 1869, work begins on one of the most ambitious Western engineering projects of the day: a 4-mile-long tunnel through the solid rock of the Comstock Lode mining district in Nevada to divert water. The tunnel drained some 2 million gallons of water from the mines per year.

→ On Oct. 23, 1925, John William Carson, who would become famous as the longtime host of the popular late-night TV program “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” is born in Corning, Iowa. Carson hosted “The Tonight Show” on NBC for 30 years, from 1962 to 1992.

→ On Oct. 20, 1944, U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur wades ashore onto the Philippine island of Leyte, fulfilling his promise to return to the area he was forced to flee in 1942 under orders from President Franklin Roosevelt. He had left behind 90,000 American and Filipino troops, only one-third of whom survived to see his return.

→ On Oct. 22, 1957, U.S. military personnel suffer their first casualties in Vietnam when 13 Americans are wounded in three terrorist bombings of Military Assistance Advisory Group and U.S. Information Service installations in Saigon. The rising tide of guerrilla activity in South Vietnam reached an estimated 30 terrorist incidents by the end of the year.

→ On Oct. 17, 1968, Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith and bronze medalist John Carlos are forced to return their awards because they raised their fists in a Black Power salute during the medal ceremony in Mexico City.

→ On Oct. 18, 1977, in the sixth game of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson hits three home runs in a row off of three consecutive pitches from three different pitchers. When the game ended, the field flooded with fans. They had a new hero: Reggie Jackson, now known as “Mr. October.”

→ On Oct. 21, 1988, “Mystic Pizza,” a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor as three young women who work at a pizza parlor in Mystic, Conn., opens in theaters. Matt Damon, then 18, also made his big-screen debut in the film.

BOARD GAME BITSAlthough video games increase in popularity on a daily basis, there’s nothing like a good old board game! Check out the origins of some of these longtime favorites. • If you’re familiar with the names of Mrs.

Peacock, Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard, you’ve played Clue. This murder mystery game was invented in England in 1944 by a solicitor’s clerk who thought it would be a good way to pass the time while sitting in underground bunkers during World War II air raid drills. It was originally called “Murder!” The players move throughout nine rooms of a mansion seeking clues as to which character committed the crime and which weapon — rope, revolver, wrench, candlestick, knife or lead pipe — was used.

• Two Canadian journalists conceived the idea of the popular game Trivial Pursuit, commercially released in 1981. An 18-year-old artist created the final artwork for the game. In 1984 alone, more than 20 million games were sold.

• It’s not surprising that the best-selling board game in the world is the game of Monopoly, with more than 200 million games sold. It’s estimated that 500 million people have played the game since its release during the Great Depression. It’s sold in 103 countries and in 37 languages. In the English version, the highest rent property is “Boardwalk,” but if you live in Spain, it’s Paseo del Pradeo named after a Barcelona street, and in France, it’s Rue de la Paix. During the game’s history, it’s been more than just a source of entertainment. During World War II, Monopoly games containing escape maps, compasses and files were smuggled to prisoners in German POW camps. Real money was even hidden inside packs of the play money to aid in prisoners’ escapes.

◆ There are many uses for empty Tic Tac containers. Here are three: Wrap with pretty paper and use as a tiny vase for a single-stem flower. Or, use them to separate small scrapbooking supplies. Last, thread two needles with a length of thread -- one white and one black. Poke the needles through a small square of paper and wrap the thread around the paper. Slip into the container for a travel sewing kit.

◆ Need your nails to dry in a hurry? Use the cool setting on your hair dryer. It works really fast. -- L.E. in Georgia

◆ To get a couple more days out of your cat litter, clean the box out and mix in a cup of baking soda.

◆ Remove mildew from plastic shower curtains by spraying them with a mix of bleach and water, or just toss them in the washing machine with your next load of towels.

◆ We have a playroom, and the kids argue about who made what mess and who should clean up which toys. We made a cleaning schedule for the room, having one or two children per day responsible to clean up at the end of the day. It was a rough start, but the kids have learned to clean up as they go rather than leave a big mess for someone else (payback is not kind). -- A Mom, via email

◆ If your vacuum has a paper filter, spray it with your fave perfume or essential oil. It will blow into the air as you vacuum, leaving behind a pleasant scent.

NOVEMBER BABIES (continued):• Most folks have heard of the Hubble Space Telescope, an instrument carried into orbit by a 1990 space

shuttle mission. But most don’t know that it was named for the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, the first to confirm the existence of galaxies other than our own Milky Way, a discovery made in 1923. A Rhodes Scholar, he studied law and set up a legal practice before realizing that his passion was astronomy.

• Bo Jackson achieved fame as the first athlete to be named an All-Star in two major sports, baseball and football. His birth name was Vincent Edward Jackson, after his mother’s favorite television star, Vince Edwards of “Ben Casey” fame. Jackson achieved his nickname when his family described him as a “wild boar hog” constantly getting into trouble. He signed with baseball’s Kansas City Royals as a left fielder in 1986 and started playing for football’s Los Angeles Raiders as a running back the following year.

• Goldie Hawn has a distinguished ancestor, Edward Rutledge, the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. This famous blonde actress is also an accomplished ballet dancer, having begun lessons at age three. At 11, she debuted in “The Nutcracker,” earning $1.50.

• The only child of famous automaker Henry Ford was born in November 1893. Edsel Ford grew up to marry into the Hudson’s department store family and founded Ford’s Mercury division. He also brought us the Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln Continental. Fourteen years after Edsel’s early death from stomach cancer at age 49, the Ford Motor Company introduced its new brand of cars named after him. Unfortunately, the Edsel was considered a commercial failure and was discontinued after the 1960 models.

BOARD GAME BITS (continued):• A serious illness was the catalyst for the creation of

one of the most popular children’s games, Candy Land. Eleanor Abbott was recovering from polio in 1945 and wanted to create something to entertain children afflicted with the disease. She devised a race to find the lost King of Candy Land covering 134 winding colored squares, so that no reading skills were required. Characters encountered along the route included Queen Frostine, Gramma Nutt and Lord Licorice, as players made their way through the Candy Cane Forest and Gum Drop Mountain. The first games sold for a dollar. There have been more than 40 million Candy Land games sold since.

• Chutes & Ladders was created to teach children good morals — Good deeds are rewarded with a trip up the ladder, while bad conduct results in a slide down. Originally called Snakes & Ladders, its origins are in India, with slithering serpents as the consequences of bad choices. Milton Bradley brought it to America in 1943 and changed the name and format.

Christmas Market to be held on Dec. 14th

◆ It was American artist and illustrator Florence Scovel Shinn who made the following observation: “The game of life is the game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy.”

◆ In 1811 and again in 1812, earthquakes caused the Mississippi River to temporarily reverse course.

◆ You might be surprised to learn that about a million Americans say they drink Coca-Cola for breakfast.

◆ Dominique Bouhours, a Frenchman who lived in the 17th century, was a priest, an essayist and a grammarian. The love of language may have been closest to his heart, though; it’s been reported that the final words he uttered on his deathbed were, “I am about to -- or I am going to -- die; either expression is used.”

◆ The beaver is a rodent.

◆ If you’re like the average adult, when you’re sitting in a relaxed position, you inhale about one pint of air with every breath.

◆ The United States isn’t the only country that has an accolade to recognize excellence in the film industry. Here the awards are known as the Oscars, but other nations have their own names for the awards: In Canada they’re known as Genies, in France they’re Cesars, in Russia they’re called Nikas, in Mexico they’re Golden Ariels, in Spain they’re known as Goyas, and in the United Kingdom they’re called Orange British Academy Film Awards.

◆ Those who study such things say that millions of trees are planted accidentally when absent-minded squirrels forget where they buried their nuts.

◆ In ancient Rome, if you had a hooked nose you were considered to be a born leader.

heard the musical work of composer John Barry, who wrote the soundtracks for 11 of the films. The winner of five Academy Awards and four Grammys, he also composed the music for “Out of Africa” and “Dances with Wolves.”

• That bump on November baby Owen Wilson’s nose is the result of having his nose broken twice, once in a high school fracas, the other in a friendly football game. Wilson is no stranger to mischief, having been expelled from high school as a sophomore for cheating on his geometry test. He spent his junior and senior years in military school.

• Back in 1930, 18-year-old Leonard Slye packed up his belongings and moved to California, hoping to make it big as a singer. He played in several groups over the next few years — The Hollywood Hillbillies, Rocky Mountaineers, Texas Outlaws —before forming Sons of the Pioneers in 1934. The following year, he appeared in the first of his 100 movies. Along the way came a name change to Roy Rogers. He acquired his golden palomino Trigger in 1938 and was seen astride that horse in every single movie and television episode. (Trigger died at the ripe old age of 33 in 1965.) At the height of his career, Roy Rogers received more than 75,000 fan letters a month.

• Back in 1968, clothing designer Calvin Klein, armed with $10,000, started out with just a coat shop in the York Hotel in New York City. Gradually expanding over the next several years, he added the original designer jeans in 1974, using Brooke Shields as a model. He sold $200,000 worth during the first week after their introduction.

Potato history is fun and fascinating(NC)—Potatoes were originally discovered on the Andean plateaus of South America, and set out to conquer the world around 6,000 years ago when the Inca Indians first cultivated them. The modern potato, now grown all over the world, was discovered in the 16th century by Spanish explorers in Peru. Shortly after this, the potato was introduced to Spain and to other European and Asian countries. Eventually, it made its way back across the Atlantic to North America. Not only is the potato nutritious, it’s easy to grow in almost all climates and produces abundantly. Just dig, store and eat as needed. In the 18th century, Antoine-August Parmentier helped King Louis XIV make the potato a hit in France. Having been imprisoned in Germany—where he was fed only potatoes—he knew how to create a feast of delicious dishes

based on this one ingredient. One guest at a Parmentier feast was legendary American statesman Benjamin Franklin. “French fries” officially arrived in the United States of America when Thomas Jefferson served them at the White House during his presidency of 1801-1809.Potatoes went on to become the basis for many peoples’ essential nutrition around the world. Over the years of cultivation in Ireland the potato had become the major food source to the Irish population. In fact, the Irish became so dependent on the potato that when their crops were wiped out by blight in the 1840s, they were thrown into a series of disastrous famines. In time, people would discover not only the delicious taste but the versatility of the potato—sometimes by accident. In 1853 railway magnate Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt sent his serving of potatoes back at an upscale restaurant in Saratoga

Springs, USA. The fact that he’d rejected them for being too thick enraged the chef, George Crum. He sliced the potatoes incredibly thin, fried them in hot oil and threw salt all over them before sending them back to the customer. Vanderbilt loved his “Saratoga crunch chips” and potato chips have been a big hit ever since.Potatoes are still making history. In October 1995 the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space. NASA and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, created the technology with the goal of feeding astronauts on long space voyages, and eventually, feeding future space colonies.Today the potato is Ontario’s largest fresh vegetable crop and the world’s fourth-largest food crop. Potatoes are nutritious, delicious and economical—they are fat and cholesterol-free, high in vitamin C and potassium and may aid in weight loss.

NOVEMBER BABIES (continued):• Baby boomers will recall the daily farewell message, “And that’s the way it is,” given by CBS anchorman

Walter Cronkite as he wrapped up the television evening news. He started his broadcasting career on radio in 1937 and brought bulletins on World War II bombings and the Nuremberg trials. During his 19 years on the evening news, Cronkite reported the momentous events of Americans’ lives, including the death of Martin Luther King Jr., the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, the Iran hostage crisis and most notably, his emotional and tearful delivery of the news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He was the source for the news of the U.S. space program. Opinion polls named him “the most trusted man in America.”

• It should come as no surprise that movie hunk Matthew McConaughey was listed in his Longview, Texas, yearbook as “most handsome.” He spent one year of high school as an exchange student in New South Wales, Australia.

• The world’s first set of septuplets to survive infancy, Iowa’s McCaughey children, turn 14 this month. Born nine weeks early, the three girls and four boys consumed 42 bottles and required 52 diapers daily during their first several months. These days the family goes through seven dozen eggs and five gallons of milk every week.

• Talent seems to run in the family of Kevin Eubanks, former leader of the “Tonight Show” band. A classical pianist/organist mother and jazz pianist uncle no doubt contributed to Eubanks’ prowess, as well as two musical brothers, one a trombonist, the other a trumpeter. Eubanks is more than the jazz guitarist we see — He also plays trumpet and violin and has composed the scores for four feature films. ■

6. Which Motown group had a hit with “It’s the Same Old Song,” and when?

Constant Barking Gets on Neighbours’ Nerves

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog barks and howls at everything, whether it’s the lawnmower next door or the neighborhood kids playing down the street. He barks at night; he barks when we’re at work. It’s embarrassing, really. My neighbors have complained about it, but I don’t know what to do to stop “Jellyroll” from barking. -- Claire S.

DEAR CLAIRE: It sounds to me as if Jellyroll is anxious about the strange noises he hears outside, and also feels anxious when you’re not at home or asleep in a separate room. Separation anxiety is a very common problem in dogs. Aggression barking also is a common issue. But they can be dealt with.To reduce separation anxiety, you must work to increase Jellyroll’s confidence that you are not abandoning him when you leave his sight. One way to do this is to have him sit and stay near an exit door. Step outside the door and shut it. Does he begin to bark? Now, step inside and have him sit and stay again -- don’t allow him to jump up. Repeat these steps until Jellyroll no longer howls when you step outside -- and when he doesn’t howl, give him a treat each time after you come back in. This could take several sessions, so don’t lose heart. To help deal with his barking at outside noises, socialize Jellyroll further. Introduce him to one or two humans at a time, max, when they visit or when out for a walk. When a scary noise like a lawnmower sets him off, have him sit and stay and give him lots of encouragement and praise as long as he stays and doesn’t bark. There are numerous training techniques you can try, and I recommend working with a trainer to learn more and possibly get even faster results.
