Principal’s Report Vermont College News Excellence Integrity Responsibility Respect Tolerance As I write this column, our Year 12 students are completing their final school assessments, the VCAA exams. While many educators have played their part in our students’ educational journey so far, I would like to acknowledge our dedicated team of Unit 3/4 teachers, who continue to meet with students to undertake revision until the very day of their study’s exam. I am sure that you all join me in thanking them for their dedication, and in wishing our class of 2016 all the best for their exams and their future beyond VSC. Vision 2016 On Wednesday 26 October, the College’s Arts & Technology staff and students presented our annual Vision Art exhibition. ‘Vision’ is a celebration and recognition of the achievements of students in Art, Visual Communication Design, Materials & Technology (including wood, metal, plastics & textiles) and Music Performance. The student work on display was, as always, of an extremely high standard and showed a broad range of artistic ability. The arts represent the creative spirit of a community – George Otero, an educationalist, describes it thus: “What makes life in human communities unique is the artistic impulse. To be human is to create. Art in all forms, and there are many, is the learning pathway to being wholly human. Being better human beings is a goal of most 21st century schools. Art is the vehicle.” Vision 2016 is an exhibition of student work, and is a tremendous demonstration of the creativity, imagination and artistic talent of Year 7 - 12 students at Vermont Secondary College. We are immensely proud of our students and were delighted to show off their talents on this evening. Many pieces were produced by our current Year 12 students, who have been assessed on these works. However, this exhibition was also about participation and encouragement, and all students involved in the arts program should be proud of their work. On a personal note, I must add what a pleasure it has been to follow the development of the Year 12 folios over the year, especially in Studio Art, whose classes I visited several times with tour groups earlier in the year. It was my great pleasure to present three awards on the evening: two encouragement awards and the ‘Principal’s Certificate of Excellence’. I found it highly ironic that someone so bereft of artistic talent had the pleasure of this task! The two encouragement awards went to Rachel Pittard (Studio Art) and Matthew Aeschlimann (Product Design – Wood). Rachel and Matt both received certificates of recognition and a prize of $100. Rachel’s work along the theme of layering is impressive, and her two pieces titled ‘emerging through time’ and ‘taking back Merimbula’ really caught my eye. Matt’s desk developed in PDW could easily find pride of place in my office or study! The Principal’s Excellence award for 2016 was awarded to Rachel Watt, for her work in both Studio Art and Visual Communication & Design, a challenging combination of two portfolio subjects. Rachel’s works are extensive with considerable research, written notes, graphics, sketches and drawings around the development of the final pieces. She has been meticulous and thorough in developing her artistic practice in both subjects. Rachel received an award certificate and also $150 in recognition of her outstanding artistic achievements - congratulations Rachel. I would like to thank all members of the College community who attended the evening to enjoy and appreciate the creative talents of our students. Special thanks to Heather Aeschlimann, the Visual Art and Materials Technology Leader, as well as all the Arts, Technology and Performing Arts staff involved in setting up such a fantastic exhibition. HISTORY OF VERMONT Excerpt from ‘This is Vermont - The Green Hill Where I Live’ by Tim Shambrook

On 6 June 1965 John Winter, an unqualified teacher from Richmond, commenced his duties in the Wesleyan Chapel at Mount Pleasant for four hours a day. Settlers were required to pay fees and in thos early weeks enrolment reached 30 pupils. In September of that year the committee unsuccessfully applied for aid in paying for the teacher’s salary and the district inspector was not impressed by the little single-roomed building. The wooden shingle roof failed to qualify because the room was only walled to a height of six feet. John Winter had purchased the desks, maps and blackboard himself but, being unable to live on the fees paid by only some of the parents, John had to resign from his position. On 13 May 1869 the newly formed committee re-submitted an application seeking aid from the Board of Education for a non-vested school to be known as Mt Pleasant Common School. From January 1869, a Mr John Brown, then at the ripe old age of 18, had commenced teaching at the school. On 20 November 1869 the committee agreed to purchase land for a school at the corner of Mitcham and Canterbury Roads, and on 12 January 1870 the Board of Education finally granted aid in the form of payments of the teacher’s salary and for the school to be built . After many trials and difficulties the people of the district finally had their school ready to receive pupils at the beginning of the 1872 school year.

DET Student Accident Insurance/Ambulance Cover Arrangements and Private Property Brought to School I again draw the abridged version of the following DET (Department of Education & Training) directive to the attention of the College community:

Parents/guardians are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance /transport and any other transport costs. Student accident insurance/ambulance cover policies are available from some commercial insurers.

The Department cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy/ambulance cover, or which policy to purchase. It is recommended that they seek assistance in this matter with their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer in the Yellow Pages or online. and

Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises.

The Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.

As the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property students, staff should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.

Year 9 High Resolves – Monday 7 November

The Year 9 High Resolves team had their final session with Jon Christie and their Industry Mentors on Monday 7 November to finalise and reflect on their school based community service project. This year the students investigated issues around migration and asylum seekers and engaged in a number of projects including information raising and awareness campaigns, the production of short films and a sausage sizzle. Involvement in the High Resolves program provided students with an excellent opportunity to investigate social justice issues of their choosing and to develop leadership, organisational and interpersonal skills. The College’s involvement in High Resolves this year will culminate in a number of student leaders attending the Annual Leadership Summit with other student leaders from around the State on 29 November.

Smoking Ban A reminder that smoking is banned on College grounds and within 4 metres of entrances to the College. This ban includes all e-cigarettes as well as tobacco and other drugs. Students, teachers and employees of the Department of Education are banned from possessing or using e-cigarettes on school grounds. The possession of e-cigarettes will be treated in the same way as the possession of cigarettes.

Over the past month, the Year 9 Geography students have been learning about palm oil and how it is linked to food security. Palm oil is an oil that is hidden in many foods/products, and its production can have devastating effects on flora and fauna - especially on Orangutans. This week is ‘Orangutan Week’ and our class (9.9) have been raising money to sponsor an Orangutan in Borneo! So far, 9.1, 9.3, 9.5, 9.7 and 9.9 have raised over $100! To celebrate the week, you can look at what products you buy that have palm oil in them and try to reduce that number. Also, wear orange and make sure you sign the petition at http://www.zoo.org.au/get-involved/act-for-wildlife/dont-palm-us-off to make sure that on 25 November selected Ministers vote in Australia to make it a law that all food items that contain palm oil are clearly labelled.

It’s almost time for our little Year 7s to spread their wings and fly to Year 8! In order to do that students need to ensure all their work is handed in to teachers. Please check VEWS for homework and assessment tasks and be in contact with your teachers to make sure you have all work submitted in a timely manner. This week will be an exciting one as we all head out to the Zoo on Thursday 10 November for the Year 7 Science Excursion. The Year 7 Girls Cricket team is also out this week with coach Shaun Gillespie. In other great news, Bronte O’Dell of Hotham did extremely well in the Victorian Junior Gymnastics Championships in Geelong. She is now the 13 year old Victoria Beam Champion. She also won silver on the floor and came 4th gymnast in the State overall. It is a truly terrific achievement and a wonderful way to end her 2016 gymnastics competition season. We are all very proud of her at Vermont Secondary College.

A reminder to all students and parents to please record all important dates for the end of year transition in their planners.

With the Mathematics Competition season coming to an end, I am proud to announce some outstanding achievements from a few of our talented students.

AMC Workshop Invitation Following his prize winning performance in the Australian Mathematics Competition (Junior Division), Thomas Pugh, year 7, has been invited to attend an Enrichment Workshop for gifted young mathematicians later this month. He will then attend the Australian Mathematics Trust Awards Presentation where he will be formally acknowledged for his outstanding performance in this competition in front of his family, peers and members of the Mathematics community. Congratulations, Thomas, on your outstanding performance.

AIMO

Five of our brightest students entered the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad competition. This examination type competition is open to talented students up to Year 10 level. About 1400 students from across Australia enter the competition yearly. Students have four hours to complete a set of ten very difficult problem solving type questions. Adam Bain (Year 7), Thomas Pugh (Year 7) and Billie Bennett (Year 9) put in commendable performances in this their debut competition. Seasoned competitors, Preet Patel (Year 9) and Arran Van Zuylen (Year 10) achieved their best results yet. Arran received a High Distinction, and Preet received a Prize for answering 9 out of the 10 questions correctly. Congratulations to both boys for their superb performances in this most challenging of competitions.

Tournament of Towns On the back of his prize winning performances in the Australian Mathematics Competition (Intermediate Division) and the AIMO, Preet Patel has been invited to The University of Melbourne as a member of the Melbourne team in the international mathematics competition Tournament of the Towns. This town-based competition has participants from over 100 cities from many different countries. Preet is one of about 25 students from Years 8 to 10 attending schools in metropolitan Melbourne to have their mathematics talent acknowledged through such an invitation. He will attend a training series of lectures/workshops over the next four weeks culminating in a four hour examination. Papers are then sent to Russia for marking. Congratulations and good luck in this competition, Preet.

AMOC School of Excellence The Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee (AMOC) Invitational Program is a program which offers the top students from the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO) extra enrichment opportunities that in future years can lead to selection in the six member Australian team to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The IMO is the premier international competition in mathematics for secondary students from different countries. It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Preet Patel’s performances in this year’s Mathematics competitions has earned him an invitation to the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee School of Excellence. This is a ten day residential camp held in Melbourne in December. Only 25 students from around Australia are invited to this camp, 12 seniors that train for the IMO and 13 juniors. Preet will be attending this camp as part of the Junior training squad to further develop his mathematical knowledge and problem solving skills. Preet, you are an outstanding ambassador for the school. I wish you much enjoyment at this camp. On behalf of the Vermont Secondary College community, congratulations on this truly amazing achievement. We are all so very proud of you. Families Buying Second Hand Copies of Mathematics Textbooks The decision to purchase a second hand textbook comes with much confusion these days. Print editions now come with codes that allow you to access an electronic version of the book, full worked solutions of questions (a necessity for students studying VCE Units 3 & 4 subjects), online quizzes and more. These codes are functional only for the year they are activated. As a buyer of a second hand textbook you will be unsure as to whether the code that comes on the inside cover of the textbook has been activat-ed or not. This must be taken into account when pricing a textbook as in most cases you will also need to purchase a reactivation code to be able to access the online resources. Buying new means you eliminate all this confusion as the textbook will come with a brand new code. However, this is not a viable option for many families. Please note that 2017 also sees the implementation of the Victorian Curriculum across Years 7 - 10. With it comes new Mathematics textbooks at these levels. As the new editions only have some minor changes from the current textbooks, it will be quite acceptable for students to have a copy of the current versions, Cambridge Essential Maths Second Edition. After purchasing a second hand textbook it is wise to try activating the code on the inside front cover early in the new year to see if it enables you to access the online resources before purchasing a new access code. To help you make a more informed decision as to what you should pay, the breakdown of the costs involved in buying new versus second hand follows.

Years 7 – 9 NEW – $67.95 Essential Mathematics for the Victorian Curriculum (print and interactive textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths) OR SECOND HAND – Price of textbook set by seller: Cambridge Essential Maths Second Edition

Plus – $19.95 Cambridge HOTmaths Supplement Validation Code (Required to activate HOTmaths)

It is recommended that parents who want to buy a second hand copy pay no more than $48 for the used textbook. Otherwise, the cost you will incur will be the same (or higher) as buying a new book.

Year 10 Maths Methods or Extension Maths NEW – $67.95 Essential Mathematics for the Victorian Curriculum (print and interactive textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths) OR SECOND HAND – Price of textbook set by seller Cambridge Essential Maths Second Edition Students will not require access to the online resources at this level, so a Supplement Validation Code will not be required.

VCE textbooks: General Mathematics Units 1 & 2 NEW – $84.95 General Mathematics Units 1 & 2 (print and interactive textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths) Students will not require access to the online resources so a second hand textbook purchased without an activation code is acceptable.

VCE textbooks: Further Mathematics Units 3 & 4 NEW – $84.95 Further Mathematics Units 3 & 4 Revised (print and interactive textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths) OR SECOND HAND – Price of textbook set by seller The original textbook bought by students was recalled during the year. The students were issued with brand new textbooks. If purchasing a sec-ond hand textbook from a Vermont Secondary College student, the code should not have been activated and will be ready for use by the buyer.

VCE texts: Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics Units1 &2 and Units 3 & 4 NEW – $84.95 (print and interactive textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths) OR SECOND HAND – Price of textbook as set by seller

Plus – $19.95 Cambridge HOTmaths Supplement Validation Code (Required to activate HOTmaths)

It is recommended that parents who want to buy a second hand copy pay no more than $65 for the used textbook. Otherwise, the cost you will incur will be the same (or higher) as buying a new book

Last Wednesday the Year 7 Boys Cricket team continued stage 3 of a possible 5 with a convincing win over Lilydale Secondary College in the Eastern Metropolitan Final at Hislop Park. After being given then news of Co-Captain Tom Witty out ill and with the leading run scorer Taylor Cooper away in Queensland on holidays, the boys would have been forgiven for allowing their spirit to drop in the lead up to the final. Instead the group rallied, got around each other and all lifted a cog or two to produce a brilliant performance with bat and ball. Despite it being a mighty fine team effort, there were some magnificent individual performances for the day. Odil Perera scored a patient yet clinical 43 runs. He combined well with Jonathon Mummery who scored 35 runs. With a couple of our best bowling attack out, our depth was going to be tested. Aayrub Khawaja and Will Banfield opened the bowling and had the opposition on the back foot early to set the tone for the team in the field who took some fine catches. Well done boys on being Eastern Metropolitan Champions but we have a long way to go, our next stage will be on Thursday 17 November with the venue to be confirmed. Thanks to Henry McNally for his assistance on the day.

Year 7 Girls Cricket ¼ Final All the girls were nervous leading up to the big day, but with our training and preparation we knew that we would be ok. Game 1: Blackburn HS was a great game with abundant spirit from all players. We won with a few wickets to spare. Handshakes all round. Game 2: Lilydale HS was going to be a hard hitting affair. Their warm up was impressive , but our bowling was just as impressive. We eventually won. Handshakes all round. Final: Close game in the final with a tie in runs with an over or two to go. We stayed composed and padded out the remaining balls to claim the victory at Hislop Park. Milkshakes all round. All the team batted, fielded and used amazing teamwork in the victory. All students would like to thank Mr Gillespie and his Year 8 student helpers for their time, patience and excellent coaching skills. Well done girls! You are going to the MCG!

Special thanks to our wonderful canteen staff who produced a delicious array of nibbles, the many student helpers on the night who practised their hospitably skills in waiting on guests, music students and staff who entertained us all with fabulous vocals, and last but not least, the behind the scenes crew who assisted with the hanging and installation of artwork. Thank-you. On behalf of the Art and Design Faculty - we hope you enjoyed the show!

Weedon Heights Primary Fete Amy Bethune, Mauricio Cruz, Von Espada and Adam Rae all did such a great job with another fantastic performance at the Weeden Heights Primary school Fete on Friday night. Along with Mr. Gaston, the group played an impromptu set of songs in front of a supportive local audience.

Instrumental Music Exam Week This week, the instrumental Music Program are running their first ‘Music Examinations week’. Each student enrolled in the program will be assessed in front of a panel of Music staff to demonstrate their skills on their chosen instrument. Exams will run for approximately 10 mins each and will take place throughout the school day. We wish our students well on their exams.

Spring Concert Last fortnight saw the Music Program run another successful Spring Concert evening for Parents, friends and the School community with some wonderful performances from The Stage Band, The Guitar and Percussion Ensembles, The String Orchestra, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Concert Bands, our Choir group as well as a beautiful, individual performance from VCE student Mark Reid accompanied by Mr. Paddock. Well done to all involved and a special farewell to all our year 12 students. Good luck for the future.

Rockstars News The Rockstars have had a very busy October this term participating firstly at St Timothy’s Fete, then hitting it out at The Basin Music Festival and finishing off with a bang at The Whitehorse Spring Festival. Three junior bands including ‘Interfector’, ‘Noxia’ and a new Year 7 Band from Miss Clark’s group, who performed for the first time, and our senior band, ‘Undivided’, all performed at St Timothy’s own ‘Battle of the Bands’. ‘Noxia’ took out the trophy in the Junior section for the second year in a row. Well done! We then headed up to The Basin the following week for the Basin Music Festival, where VSC was represented by five bands: Interfector’, ‘Petros’, ‘EAST’, ‘Noxia’ and ‘Undivided’. The students performed to a high standard while gaining valuable stage experience, and especially enjoyment. We were fortunate enough to come away with a win in two of the categories - Best Performer Category for U/18 which was deservedly won by the talented ‘Dobre N’ and also Best Act Category for U18 won by our senior band, ‘Undivided’. Congratulations and well done to everyone who participated. Once again, none of these events would have gone ahead without the help and dedication from our Rockstars Co-ordinator, Ms Mishuk. Her tireless energy and long hours spent encouraging all her students are to be highly commended. Thankyou. Looking forward to another eventful calendar with all the bands next year.
