In the 44 years I’ve been making furniture, one of my very

favorite designs has been the Harpswell chair. Launched in

1992, Harpswell has since seated Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 on

the lawn of the White House and then, remarkably, Pope

Francis in 2015 in Philadelphia. It’s no surprise I suppose that

this quietly dignified chair remains our most popular to this

day. Its striking simplicity appears to hold a universal

appreciation, much to our delight. The great sculptor,

Constantin Brâncusi, said of design:

“Simplicity is complexity resolved.”

Maybe that’s it. Within our family of 70 master craftsmen at

Thos. Moser, the success of Harpswell is well understood to lie

in the perfect balance of precision in technique, simplicity of

design, and respect for the wood as the premium material of

its making. Harpswell: one of my top three favorites.

In Florida this past year, while escaping the harsh Maine

winter, I couldn’t escape my calling. My bones needed warmth,

but my hands needed to make, and my soul needed that

personal connection with craft, with Auburn, where I have built

a life full of meaning. Just as the Shakers put their “hands to

work and their hearts to God”, I too felt the necessity to

contribute and to elevate my calling. Whether from my sense of

responsibility, my curiosity or, perhaps closer to the truth,

from my creative stubbornness, I was drawn back to the

workbench, yet again, by a simple cafeteria chair of steel and

plastic that Mary and I spotted on a ferry from Maine to Nova

Scotia. What made it remarkably comfortable was its simple

back that curved to support the lumbar in two directions at

once; a geometric detail that I later discovered is called an

anticlastic curve – like a potato chip.

Three iterations later, I believe I have achieved my most

comfortable solid wood chair yet. I trust you, our customers, to

be the judges. I have decided to call it Auburn, my new favorite

chair.

A number of years ago, a long time admirer of Thos.

Moser and fan of Tom’s Continuous Arm Chair (TMC),

asked of son, David Moser, the following question:

“As an accomplished designer and maker in your own

right at Thos. Moser, one with a more contemporary

aesthetic yet iterative sensibility, what would your

take on Tom’s TMC look like? After all, if the TMC

interprets a classical Windsor, what could its sequel

be in the hands of a next generation Moser?”

As the only American makers showing at the

Scandinavian Furniture Fair in the mid 1980s, Tom and

Mary witnessed something they already knew to be

true: that the best design is often incremental, building

over time on work from the past.

Years later, David himself confirmed, “Though we are

innovators, the Moser aesthetic is iterative and almost

always evolutionary, owing deference to antecedent

form.”

That iteration then was the challenge, and Sequel is

the result. Tom’s Shaker round stand, a long-standing,

easy favorite for its simplicity and grace, is also

represented here by David, completing the pairing and

its contemporary evolution.

Since 2007, our Customer in Residence (CIR) program has welcomed

hundreds of customers, from across the country and around the

world, to our Auburn, Maine workshop. During the week-long CIR

program, our master cabinetmakers guide each participant through

every step in the production of their very own Thos. Moser heirloom

— from raw material selection to the finishing process.

If you — or someone you know — share our passion for fine

woodworking, the CIR program offers a unique opportunity to learn

the intricacies of traditional joinery, the satisfaction of shaping fine

hardwood, even the discriminating process of applying natural

finishes to achieve the perfect luster. You’ll have the opportunity to

interact closely with the Moser team and with fellow attendees,

sharing experiences during daily meetings and at two special group

dinners during your visit.

Participants stay at the historic Harraseeket Inn in Freeport with

ample free time to explore Freeport and surrounding areas.

At Thos Moser, we are designers and makers of functionally-driven,

handmade furniture of the highest quality in both materials and

woodworking expertise.

As designers, we address a given set of challenges, and as makers, we

craft the solution. Whether from architects, designers or residential

clients needing custom solutions, those wide ranging challenges

invite partnership and most importantly, collaboration. With some 70

experienced craftsmen, as well as skilled specialists, including

designers, engineers, and project managers, it is in partnership that

we shine.

Whether the solution is a single table or a collection of seven hundred

chairs, as in the magnificent Grace Farms sanctuary space, we rely on

our vast capabilities in craft to inform the best possible solution.

A FAMILY IN THE MAKINGIn 1972, when Mary and I started Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers,

we took a leap of passion and began a life of making. Along with

our sons, we committed to a philosophy of ‘good work for its

own sake’. As it turns out, the rewards have been many and

diverse, but none have been greater than the extended family

we represent today.

This past year, we celebrated the veterans of the Thos. Moser

family that have been with us for twenty years or more, and my

greatest pride is in each and every name on that list. Without

these individuals, and those they have gone on to inspire, we

would be just purveyors of furniture, and we would not have

lasted 44 years. They have my eternal gratitude.
