By Parker Knox Sportswriter Embarrassed in their opener in the District 7B tournament last week, the Vermillion Grey Sox fought back in the losers' bracket Sunday, dominating Beresford, 11-2, to move within one win of still earning a spot in next week's state "B" amateur tournament in Mitchell. The Grey Sox were to play the Akron Rebels on Wednesday night with the winner advancing to the state tournament. Jumping out to a 7-0 lead with two runs in the second and five in the third, the Grey Sox cruised to their win over Beresford behind starter Cody Schreiber and reliever Tyler Johnson, who combined for 10 strikeouts. Schreiber pitched till the seventh with Johnson finishing the game. The Grey Sox increased their lead to 10-1 with a three- run fifth inning. They had 19 hits off three Beresford hurlers, including a 4-for-4 performance from Mike Moran. He had a home run among his four hits and drove in five runs. Reid Meierkort and Grant Lueders each hit safely three times. Michael Jensen had two hits for the Blues, who managed only four other hits off Schreiber and Johnson. Last Wednesday the Grey Sox were done in early by their own mistakes, committing nine errors in the first two innings during which the visiting Renner Oldtimers scored 14 runs – four in the first and 10 in the second. The Grey Sox "won" the rest of the game, 6-3, but that was small consolation. Johnson pitched two innings for Vermillion. Mitch Schwartz threw the next six innings, keeping Renner scoreless until a single run in the eighth. Moran pitched the ninth. The Grey Sox outhit Renner, 12-10, despite the 17-6 final score. Lueders and Merritt Groh had three hits each while Jason Rasmussen, Brooks LIttle, Tim Ross and Moran had two hits apiece. Cases Disposed 06/29-07/13-19/2012 Bryan Bradley Hays, Jr., 325 S.
