I hope that you enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations. I was away celebrating with the people of Southwold so was unable to attend any of the local event, however I have heard nothing but good reports and it would seem that despite the unsettled weather everyone had a wonderful time. Tickhill certainly looked the part with flags and bunting galore. Don’t forget Tickhill Gala on Saturday 7th July—another opportunity for Tickhill to come together for an enjoyable afternoon—maybe this time the sun will shine!

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary

My name is Buster and I arrived at the kennels after walking the streets all alone with no one to care for me. I have settled really well into life here at the kennels and I am told I have no behavioural problems, I am not destructive and try to behave myself.

I love going for walks and I am told I walk really well on a lead, however I do get a bit excited and I am told I can be a little strong in my eagerness to get to anything.

My basic training is very good, but my carer said I may need a little refresher course on a couple of commands, so it looks like I may have to go back to school at some point. But I am quite clever so I am sure I wont need many lessons !

I do get along with most dogs although I do prefer the lady dogs.

I love having my carers spend time with me and will play for as long as they have the time

Even though I am such a good boy I am still waiting for my forever loving home. I see my other doggy friends come and go but I am still waiting. Can you help me and give me a second chance ?

With the summer just around the corner it’s time to ensure that your pet is protected for the holiday season. Important at any time of the year, vaccinations play a key part in helping your pet stay happy and healthy in the summer months.

Olympic Celebrations

To celebrate the Olympics being held in London this summer the children made a display for the Methodist Church window. The flowers were made from tissue paper, cupcake cases and serviettes and fixed to modelling straws for the stems. The laurel leaves contained the Olympic and Paralympic values: Friendship, Courage, Determination, Equality, Respect, Inspiration and Excellence. These are values we could all live by, not only for the Olympics! The gold, silver and bronze foliage represented the medals and the Olympic logo was also produced by the children using tissue paper.

During July we will be continuing to celebrate the London Olympics with our own Olympic Week, including Torch Parade, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, sporting activities, and themed lessons. We will even be having Olympic themed school dinners to which parents and grandparents have been invited! Please pray for good weather for us and look out for the photos in next month’s issue!

Jubilee Celebrations at Tickhill Estfeld

On Friday 1st June the staff and pupils of Tickhill Estfeld started off their jubilee celebrations in style. All dressed in red, white and blue and wearing their handmade crowns they welcomed Ray Hill, Mayor of Tickhill and members of the Tickhill Town Council to their “street party”.

Before starting the party Ray Hill presented the pupils with commemorative mugs, specially designed to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, on behalf of the Town Council; something to keep and treasure for years to come.

Following the National Anthem the party began. All enjoyed a delicious spread specially prepared by school cook Mrs Davies and her ladies. Traditional fayre was enjoyed by all, especially the jelly for dessert.

The afternoon was a very happy one and all enjoyed a surprise treat when the ice cream van arrived during the afternoon. Everybody looked wonderful and a good time was had by all.

Thank you to everybody in school and the Home and School Association who worked so hard to make the day a success and to the Town Council for presenting the jubilee mugs.

Doncaster Primary Schools Cross Country Competition Congratulations to all 16 pupils who represented Tickhill Estfeld Primary School in the Doncaster Primary Schools Cross Country Competition at Hill House School on Saturday 12th May 2012. The competition is always exciting and fiercely contested. The course is a gruelling one and we are very proud of all who represented the school so well. Several of our pupils finished in the top 10 in their age group; they were Lucy Gratton (2nd

U9 girls), Anya Clayton (6th U9 girls), Harry Lee (7th U9 boys), Max Davidson (9th U9 boys) and Isobel Gratton (7th U11 girls). Well done to them all!

TICKHILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Readers will know that our Town Council has set out to produce a Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan, the ‘really local’ plan introduced in the 2011 Localism Act. Because it has statutory status, this plan matters and has teeth! A steering group, comprising councillors and other members with appropriate knowledge and experience, has started work – and we need your help, because the eventual Neighbourhood Plan will belong to the whole community.

The starting point is to identify the issues which the Plan should address. With this copy of Tickhill Today you will find a questionnaire, which we hope everyone will fill in and return. With this information we will be able to determine what you value most in Tickhill, what you think could be improved and what gaps there are to fill. There are limitations, of course, as the Plan is primarily to do with land and how it is used, and there are procedures to follow. Typically a Plan includes such things as housing, provision for businesses to be supported or expanded, development of community facilities, environmental matters, building design, Conservation Areas, traffic and transport and open spaces. This initial consultation exercise will lead on to detailed work on the content of the Plan.

At the same time, we need to develop a vision and objectives for the Plan as a whole. Philip Mottram has provided us with this suggestion as a starting point: To preserve and enhance the essential character of the town with regard to its amenities and services, the built environment, open spaces and the surrounding countryside. To promote local shops, businesses and service provision, a sensitive awareness of historical and architectural features, listed buildings and the Conservation Area, and protection of the Green Belt. To identify unsatisfactory or vulnerable areas or services where improvement would be beneficial, with suggestions as to how these should best be treated. Your comments and suggestions on this statement will also be welcomed, preferably in writing, as the final version will set the overall objective for the Plan.

Please make your contribution to this by July 31st, as requested on the questionnaire. There is no limitation on the number of responses from any household – individual replies from different members of the family are welcome. There will be spare copies of the questionnaire available in the Library or use any sheet of paper. Thank you for your contributions.

Rossington Hall re-opens for Dining After a year of restorations, Doncaster stately home Rossington Hall, on Great North Road, is opening its doors on 30th June with a fine dining experience not to be missed.

Served in the glorious oak panelled library with views over the wonderful gardens Rossington Hall’s new 3 AA Rosette chef, John Lyons, is set to delight diners with a fine dining menu fit for a king.

Having worked in some of the most prestigious restaurants around the UK, and also in France, and with some of the best know chefs, including James Martin, John is delighted to be bringing his innovative and exquisite menus to Doncaster. With a full ‘A la carte’ menu along with an intriguing 7 course taster menu, John’s food is set to offer sheer delight to even the most discerning of palates.

Art Review and What going On July 2012 by Hilary Cartmel June saw the opening of Doncaster’s new Civic Square – the Sir Nigel Gresley Square, named after one of the most famous steam locomotive engineers, who designed The Flying Scotsman and the Mallard and also installation and unveiling of Michael Johnson’s 8 meter high, stainless steel and bronze sculpture Danum.

During the summer months there is a sporting theme going on in Doncaster’s Art Galleries Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery Doncaster’s Sporting Clubs Saturday 9th June – Saturday 15th September In the Olympic year this exhibition celebrates some of the many sports clubs in the Doncaster area.The exhibition brings together photographs taken by students attending the Extended National Diploma in Photography at Doncaster College with artefacts belonging to the sports clubs.Clubs represented include Doncaster Athletic Club, DARTES (Doncaster Swimming Club) and Doncaster Hockey Club. Doncaster Art Club Saturday 14th July – Saturday 15th September The annual exhibition of works by members of the Doncaster Art Club. Works on display range from landscapes, to still lives and portraits and are done in a wide range of media. Many of the works are for sale.

Cusworth Hall Our Sporting Heroes: A century of Doncaster Olympians 16th June – 2nd September From the London Olympics in 1908 to the 2012 games a number of Doncaster born athletes have represented their country at the Olympic Games. This exhibition celebrates the lives and achievements of those athletes, and includes displays of medals, sporting equipment, team clothing and memorabilia from the games in which they competed.

Doncaster Open Market Saturday 7th July. Arts & Crafts Fair These Fairs will be held in the centre of Doncaster Open Market (voted Best Market in Britain 2011 and Britain's Favourite Market 2012) on the first Saturday of every month throughout the summer and into autumn. Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield until 1 December is an exhibition of Andy Wahol’s late Self Portraits and at Western Park Museum until 6 January is an exhibition designed for children and the readers of their stories called Magic Worlds. This exhibition delves into the spell-binding world of magic and illusion. Created by the V&A Museum of Childhood, it will invite visitors to explore the fantastical realms of witches, wizards and fairies and celebrate the conjuring feats of the finest stage magicians. Sounds like fun!

Nottingham Castle Museum until 16 September Living in Silk This exhibition comes from the China National Silk Museum, Hangzhou, China, and is a survery show of Chinese Textiles Through 5000 Years, from some of the earliest surviving fragments of silk cloth in the world, sumptuous garments and accessories from the Qing and other dynasties, to the present day. As well as giving a taste of the rich colour, symbolism and exquisite craftsmanship of Chinese silk, the exhibition also provides a glimpse in to how silk has been produced over several millennia. It's the first time these items have been seen in the UK. There is an entry charge to this Museum.

On the 20th – 25th of May 17 pupils from Wadworth Primary went on an action packed week to the amazing … KINGSWOOD, Staffordshire.

During the week, when they were there, they did a variety of different and challenging activities; some of the favourite activities were:

☺ Zip wire ☺ Go-Karting ☺ Abseiling ☺ Quad-biking ☺ Lazer zone

Tom and Lauren from last week said that they were really excited and couldn’t wait to go, so let’s see what they thought about it when they were there. Here are there thoughts:

Lauren said that she loved Zip Wire, even-though it was high she just jumped for her life. The food was nice (and also healthy). The staff there was really friendly and really helpful. She also like the juice breaks in-between the activities. Lauren also said that she loved the go-karts, quad bikes and zip wire they were all the highlight of the trip for her!

Tom said that all of it was amazing! Go-karts were the best. There were fun, fast and I was the best in the class. Zip wire was absolutely extraordinary! We made movies with teddy’s, mine were called buzzy the bee and snappy the crocodile. Quad biking was funny because he nearly ran Keiron over. The highlight of the week was meeting Keiron because he was really funny and a great team leader. I miss him.

While most of the pupils were having a great time at Kingswood the children that didn’t go had a fun task to complete. I was one of the children that didn’t go to Kingswood .We all had to design a theme park that would make a profit and loss using just £ 500,000. During the week we had to add all the rides costing £25,000 - £50,000; we also had to work on the financial side of setting up a successful business. He is some pupil’s thoughts…

Harry said, First of all our teacher, Mrs Vaughan, told us what we needed to know for our project. Then we had to create an advert poster to see who got the most money for there theme park. It was amazing, cool and I really missed everyone who went to Kingswood. It was boring without the rest of year 6 here.

Bethany said, the best thing about the week was making the 3D models for her theme park because it was fantastic working with her friends. She was amazed by how well her 3D models looked like when they had finished. She would like to do it again sometime but this time with the whole class.

T ICKHILL PARISH ROOM Tickhill Parish Room is one of the oldest buildings in Tickhill! It's a Grade II listed building and was built in 1470 as St

Leonard's Hospice.

In 1898 the building was converted into a meeting room for the parishioners of Tickhill and was used throughout the 20th Century for a wide variety of purposes. Apparently the school dentist and the school nit nurse used to visit the Parish Room and children from Tickhill and the surrounding area came for treatment! I would be interested to know if any of you can remember such events in the Parish Room. It would be fascinating to know how many different ways it was used in the past! Recently a (fairly) reliable source mentioned a ghost in the cellar - has anyone heard this story?

The most recent renovations in 2007 brought the building into the 21st Century, much better equipped now to meet the requirements of modern Tickhill 'hirers'.

We have a superb kitchen, fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and kitchen pans and utensils, well able to cope with a dinner party for up to 45. We can accommodate 60 people theatre style, and our up-to-date modern projector can be used with your laptop for slide shows, talks, etc.

There is plenty of local parking nearby.

If you want to hire the Parish Room (hopefully you are neither the school dentist, nor the nit nurse!) please contact me on 07840 419763. Our beautiful building is suitable for all sorts of occasions - christenings, birthday parties for both grown ups and children, business meetings/conferences, anniversary celebrations, wedding receptions and many other events. As yet we don't have a wedding licence - but who knows....? Our rates are very reasonable and have not increased since we re-opened in 2008.

J ubilee Thanks Well, what a fantastic time we had in Tickhill celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The flags and bunting got us all in

the mood, as the town was festooned in a display of Red White & Blue. Sunday - We started the week with a delicious Jubilee lunch and quiz in the Parish room, then home to watch the Thames Pageant on the TV.

Monday - It was the Jubilee Picnic & Tea Party at the recreation ground. We didn’t let the

showers dampen our spirits as we met up with friends to enjoy the entertainment, music and food. At the end of the day, when the band treated us to a wonderful rendition of all our favourite patriotic songs, we waved our flags while singing loudly. We went home to watch the Diamond Jubilee Concert and Firework display.

Tuesday - We started the day watching the Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, followed by more socialising with friends at the Hog Roast in St Mary’s Church. Then home again to watch the Jubilee Carriage Procession.

Wednesday – At our evening Patchwork & Quilting meeting we had more celebrations with Jubilee cakes and oh... our 2nd Jubilee quiz!!

Thursday - We were entertained in the library with a talk by Janine Di’ Giovanni who came to promote her book ‘Ghost by Daylight’. Oh...and we had another Jubilee quiz (we’re getting quite good at them by now).

Friday – It was off to Wadworth for their Jubilee Sing-a-long & Supper. We met more friends, waved more flags and enjoyed singing well known songs from all parts of the United Kingdom. As the evening came to a close Land of Hope & Glory prompted frantic flag waving & loud cheering.

Saturday - We were beginning to suffer from all the loud singing and needed to celebrate a little quieter. We found the perfect answer - The Methodist Church Flower Festival and we were not disappointed, the displays were stunning and the refreshments very welcome.

Sunday – An afternoon of sunshine, with friends at Tickhill Castle, then home to take down the flag & bunting (oh dear, can’t get the flagpole out of the bracket it’s swollen with all the rain).

A very big THANK YOU to all those people who gave their time to organise these events, (and to Tickhill Today for keeping us informed) we had a truly wonderful week the atmosphere was fantastic and we can’t wait for a reason to do it all again.

T ickhill Horticultural Society On May 31st Carol Bowser kept an enthralled audience amazed with her ‘Story of Winthrop Park’ the history of a

disused sewage farm in Wickersley and its development into Winthrop Park Gardens. An experienced and very amusing speaker, she created a superb rapport with her audience. A visit to the gardens is being arranged.

During the meeting Chris Phinn announced that Judith Kell was the winner of the challenging plant quiz that she had devised. The quiz raised £41 for society funds. The winner and a number of runners-up received plants, many of which Chris had grown on from cuttings taken while she was in Bermuda. Many thanks Chris.

Our speaker on Thursday 26th July is Sheila Clark of Walkeringham who was last with us in March 2003. Her talk is entitled ‘Foliage and Me’ Sheila is of course well known to Flower Club members and those who have visited her garden on one of her open days.

M others' Union Our trip to Southwell Minster was a really enjoyable day. The weather for once smiled on us and we had a

film show, a guided tour and a look round at the 'Monarchy' exhibition in the cloisters. We were joined by Christine Bowering for the tour, which was a pleasant surprise.

MORE TICKHILL FOLKLORE.

We have received yet another bulletin issued by The Society for Protection Of Old Folklore (SPOOF) which Tickhill residents may care to see.

There are more ancient customs that are only found in Tickhill, a place that always seems to do things differently. The Society has discovered that there is the unique Quick Sweep Ritual which has survived in the town. There have been rumours that this ancient practice had died out but our extensive researches can confirm that the ritual is still performed in Tickhill, which may be the only place where it has survived. Unlike other Customs like Derbyshire Well Dressing, Cornish Floral Dance, Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling and The Haxey Hood all of which take place on particular dates or special times of the year, the Tickhill Quick Sweep Ritual is both random and fleeting.

There are many residents in the town who claim they have never seen it happen. Old Tickhillians insist that to catch a glimpse is a lucky omen. It is said that fortunate observers should promptly buy a Lottery ticket (although the Society can find no clear evidence that the practice has ever produced results).

It seems that it can happen at any time of day. Suddenly someone will emerge from one of the retail outlets with a yard brush. They may wear a butcher’s apron or a shop assistant’s overall but that is obviously not compulsory. The brush is used quickly to sweep dust and dirt off the pavement in front of the premises. This only takes a few seconds and then the sweeper disappears inside. And that’s it. You have to be on the spot, just at the right time, to see it. No one knows quite what the purpose of this routine is. To ward off evil spirits has been suggested. Others think it originally had some commercial purpose whereas others claim it is merely an attempt to keep the town tidy.

The dirt, of course, is brushed into the gutter. Some insensitive malcontents who have no interest in preserving old customs complain that this dirt all gets washed into the drains, blocking them up so that when it rains heavily there are floods. Traditionalists reply that this is a small price to pay for the rare privilege of retaining an age old custom of the town. SPOOF feels very strongly that the community would be all the poorer if such ancient practices were to die out and congratulates those who keep up the old traditions.

Attempts have been made to contact SPOOF to check on their evidence but so far it has not been possible to get in touch

garden and enabling us to have such an enjoyable evening. On 4th July we shall be having our Bastille celebrations, with games music and fine food! After a two month break, we will begin our next season on Wednesday 3rd October with the AGM and wine tasting. All are welcome. Many the cry for help KSM have had when testing has not been carried out on a fabric first and important dresses are ruined.

You could also make use of the household laundry service, which includes curtains, bedding (including some duvets) and table linen, etc.

At our May meeting Jean Townsend (in costume) talked about the Medieval way of Death. Your scribe feared that this might be a ghoulish note on which to end our 2011/12 Season but he need not have worried. Jean described with considerable humour how death in medieval times was very much a class dependent affair and

how many people who were wealthy, or who had made themselves wealthy, spent much of their adult lives planning their funerals to demonstrate how wealthy they actually were. Even the less wealthy were keen to show that they were not at the bottom of the social pile. Perhaps things are not much different today! We thank Jean for an interesting, informative and humorous talk.

Those who attended our summer visit to the Thackray Medical Museum In Leeds at the end of May enjoyed an excellent day out and came back extremely grateful that they lived in the 21st Century! Some of the historic medical instruments and procedures on display were particularly gruesome; even so we all thank Dorothy Bradley for organising a most interesting outing.

Looking forward we will be exhibiting at the Tickhill Gala on 7th July – let’s hope the weather will be kind to us all for the event – then on July 21st we have our first ever Tickhill Local History Fair in the Library between 10.00AM and 3.00PM. This will be an ideal opportunity for families and friends to find out what is available both from the Library Service and from the Society. Exhibitors will include the Friends of the Mill Dam, Helen Wallder of Doncaster Local Studies Library showing the Family History material available through the Library, there will also be exhibits from Doncaster Archives and the Society’s own archives. Highlight perhaps will be the public showing for the first time in many years of some recently discovered cine films of Tickhill’s past. This is certainly not an event to be missed and we look forward to seeing you there.

That was a busy month!

The Beavers went to Yorkshire Wild Life Park and then had a sleepover in the Scout & Guide Headquarters.

The Cubs went to Doncaster Aero Museum for a day of air activities culminating in each of them receiving the Air Activities Badge. They also went to Austerfield Field Studies Centre to make use of the Doncaster Astronomical Society’s observatory. Unfortunately, the weather was bad and the only things visible were clouds (or was it just one big, grey, rain laden cloud). Never mind, the cubs asked many questions and Doncaster Astronomical Society provided all the answers and more.

The Scouts went to York and visited Yorvik, the Yorkshire Museum and got involved in fudge making.

The Explorers went to North Wales for gorge walking, climbing and camping. They also celebrated with a birthday meal at Carlo’s in Doncaster.

As if that wasn’t enough, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers spent a 4 day weekend at Walesby Forest Scout Camp Site celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee. Despite blazing sunshine, torrential rain, howling winds everyone had an action packed weekend.

On offer was – climbing, caving, rifle shooting, canoeing, kayaking, crate stacking, circus skills, quad bikes, zorbing, discos, entertainment by a Katy Perry lookalike and even eating and sleeping. The camp came to a climax with a giant street party, the lighting of a beacon on June 4, a dramatic fireworks display and then – the following day – It’s a Knockout. No one went home unhappy; everyone went home tired, dirty but with the knowledge that they had experienced something special.

We now move towards Summer with the Tickhill Gala on July 7th. We are still taking bookings for stalls and sideshows. The entertainment has been booked – 3SIXTY BMX Display Team will be showing off their skills on BMX bikes as they climb over vehicles, jump through the air and do acrobatic tricks. If this is too active then we also have Joe Longton and his sheepdogs demonstrating the close tie between a shepherd and his dogs. Doncaster District Scout Band will be leading the parade and giving a concert performance on the field.

July is now upon us and it will soon be the end of the academic year. Let us hope it turns into a long hot summer when we can use the Recreation Ground and its facilities.

We may also by now have the car park at St Mary’s road repaired. The drains should have been cleared and running free and hopefully no more flooding there

and the pot holes filled. The car park has also been re marked at great expense and the Council request please that you all kindly observe the correct parking etiquette. The marked disabled parking is for persons who are genuinely disabled, who have a disabled badge. The hatched areas are not for parking. These are for emergency service vehicles, and the areas under the trees are not parking areas. Please, a little consideration.

In May the council had their A.G.M., and although no members of the public were present it was a pleasant evening. Cllr R. Hill was re-elected Mayor, and Cllr N. Cannings Deputy Mayor. Congratulations to both. Mr G Barwell from Street Scene was with us and hopefully we shall see an improvement in weed control in the Town, alongside the recreation ground maintenance. I did ask him how he could assist us with the control of dog foul and could hardly believe it when he informed me there had only been 5 reported incidents in the past year. Please report any you see, tel. 736000, Bagged dog foul can go in any bin with exception of the green domestic bin.

I sincerely hope you enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations. I am informed there were more than 2000 persons enjoying the day. A real tribute to Queen and country. The rain held off most of the time and didn’t dampen the spirits too much. The teas and coffees were a bit of a challenge but hopefully most of you were happy. Thank you to all who helped with the raffle and the washing up!

The Tickhill Residents’ Association proudly donated the Medals for the races, and many individuals and D.M.B.C. donated gifts of money to help support the presentation of Commemorative mugs for the children at primary school, others gave freely of their time and effort, and a BIG THANK YOU to YOU ALL. A special thanks to the organisers of the sporting events, the Punch and Judy and the fabulous music played by the two bands. Zumba, you were superb. Tennis you were too. A very special thank you must go to the Lions club, who the Council teamed up with for the occasion. The event would not have gone off so well without your input. Thank you to all who attended and helped make this a very special day.
