IASOA (International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere)
Supersites: Suites of instruments measuring variables that lead to process understanding
Models: High frequency column output on model levels at supersites
MIP: Developed Format and Semantics used for both models and observations promoting multimodel and multisite verification and process evaluation
Data: Available through the YOPP Data Portal (yopp.met.no)
Targeted processes: Low level clouds (including phase), Stable boundary layers, Atmosphere-snow interactions over land and sea-ice, Coupling procedures (variables and frequencies), Ocean mixing, …

What is a MODF?Getting all the data from all the sensors from
one location for a finite period into one (netcdf) file that looks just like the
corresponding model output
ARM already figured has done this…….Model Best Estimate (mbe) files – Does YOPP SH need to create corresponding files?https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/2009BAMS2891.1

ARM has updated NSA mbe files through 2018 MODFs will be higher resolution (1 min)
Why are MODFs being developed? The MOSAiC Year Presents an Observing Opportunity

A Common set of Observation Outputs
However are we going to do that?
A truly holey plan!Data is collected at non-operational research stations which are sometimes and sometimes not co-located with operational weather stations (if not, no consistent meteorology)
Essential variables are established for a wide variety of different mostly) research objectives
Instruments are operated by different countries, organizations and institutions even at the same observatory
A wide community of potential users (gridded data people) want a consistent network product
There is a serious under-estimate and resulting lack of resources for data processing, archiving
A single variable (even something simple like temperature) may be collected redundantly, qc-ed and processed differently and or derived with different retrieval methods so expert selection must made of which value to use – All the data or best estimate data?
Portals require that target repositories have (consistent) metadata
Grant funded research groups tend to embargo (especially processed) data
Global archives (GAW, BSRN, AeroNET, ebas, are for a narrow range of variables) and typically are not up to date
THE DATA AT RESEARCH STATIONS IS INTENDED TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUAL LINES OF RESEARCH LEADING TO AN ENDPOINT OF A PEER REVIEWED RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS

Strategy can be applied to YOPP SH
http://cfconventions.org/
The approach is to develop ‘recipes’ for developing MODFs and single cell model outputs with consistent protocols for date/time and location representation, variable names and units, file identification conventions, metadata, and how individuals and institutions will be properly cited and credited.
Building the Merged Observatory Data Files (MODFs) - The YOPP Validation and YOPP Processes Team – NSA is the prototype site since ARM has the most advanced single entity data repository – Suggested YOPP SH prototype site be South Pole

The YOPPsiteMIP enterprise of looking at processes (including tendencies) at model time steps (7.5 min or 15 min) and verifying and comparing with observational data (1 min) will allow:
• Separation of the effects of local and larger transport processes on the Arctic and Antarctic environment
• Investigation of how (and which) fast processes are contributing to accumulating biases in the NWP model forecasts
PROPOSED RESEARCH STRATEGY
The YOPPsiteMIP activity is open to regional and global climate models, as it will be interesting to statistically evaluate the fast physical processes in them as well. We anticipate finding common issues across models, in particular regimes that through analysis can be attributed to certain processes/parameterizations which can then be tackled in community efforts.
