II. Research 1. Significant Technical Contributions Following is a brief summary of technical contributions culled under the broad categories: (i) Models, (ii) Techniques, (iii) Systems, and (iii) Innovative Applications. (i) Handwriting Recognition Models

Developed the first handwritten word recognition module suitable for real time applications [IEEE TPAMI: 19(4):366-379 (1997)] using an innovative dynamic matching algorithm to assign automatically segmented pieces of words to lexical entities. Prior methods modeled either discrete features or continuous features but not both. The early models were extended to a new stochastic framework which modeled sequences of features that combined discrete symbols and continuous attributes [IEEE TPAMI: 28(3):458-462 (2006)]. Modeled “active” recognition along the lines of the A* algorithm [IEEE TPAMI: 22(4):400-407 (2000)]. It provides a multi-resolution framework for adapting to factors such as the quality of the input pattern, its intrinsic similarities with patterns of other classes, and the processing time available. Finer resolution is accorded to only certain “zones” of the input pattern which are deemed information bearing given the classes that were being discriminated. Incorprated the theories of reading and perception developed in psychology literature in analyzing handwritten words [IEEE TPAMI: 23(2):149-164 (2001)] and demonstrated its uses in postal address reading [IEEE TPAMI: 21(12):1344-1356 (1999)]. Also spearheaded tremendous strides in word recognition accuracy of unconstrained handwritten documents by applying OCR correction techniques [PR: 42(12):3271-3277 (2009)] in a bootstrapping framework where innovative topic categorization techniques are used to generate smaller topic-specific lexicons [IJDAR 12(3):153-164 (2009)]. The landmark paper on Arabic OCR [IEEE TPAMI: 28(5):712-724 (2006)] has opened up the area of multilingual document analysis as the new frontier. Another recent paper on Devanagari script [IJDAR 12(2):123-138 (2009)] describes a novel recognition driven segmentation methodology which steers away from prior approaches that have used sequential rules to segment characters. Book on the OCR of Indic Scripts (Springer, 2009) is the first comprehensive book on this subject. (ii) Pattern Recognition Techniques

Developed a suite of efficient and field-tested image processing routines for handling the contour representation in handwritten word images [IEEE TPAMI: 21(9):928-932 (1999); IEEE TPAMI: 23(3):323-326 (2001)]. Departing from the myriad of heuristic approaches, introduced a statistical approach to binarization and noise removal by modeling the degraded document as a Markov Random Field (MRF) where the prior is learnt from a training set of high quality images, and the probabilistic density is learnt on-the-fly [IEEE TPAMI: 31(7):1184-1194 (2009)] . Contribute to the fundamentals of combination (fusion) of pattern classifiers. Proved that the optimal combination algorithm for identification systems is difficult to express analytically because of the difficulty presented by the dependencies between matching scores assigned to different classes by the same classifier [IJPRAI 24(2):173-191 (2010)]. Developed the first

Page 5: Venu Govindaraju Curriculum Vitaegovind/Venu-cv-2011.pdf · 2011-02-14 · ICPR, IBM Best Student Paper Award, (X. Peng), Istanbul, Turkey, 2010, òText Separation from Annotated

taxonomy of the complexity of classification combinators and a guideline for choosing a particular type of fusion technique [IEEE TIFS: 3(4):719-733 (2008)]. Prior literature lacked any quantitative methodology of capturing the precise dependence between word recognizers and lexicons. Developed a performance model that statistically "discovers" the relation between a word recognizer and the lexicon. It uses model parameters that capture a recognizer's ability of distinguishing characters and its sensitivity to lexicon size. Such a model is very useful in comparing word recognizers by predicting their performance based on the lexicon presented. Invented the notion of “lexicon density” as a metric to measure the expected accuracy of handwritten word recognizers [IEEE TPAMI: 24(6):789-800 (2002); IEEE TPAMI: 24(12):1553-1564 (2002)]. (iii) Document Analysis Systems

Authored the first widely cited (over 110 citations) system-level paper describing the architecture of an end-to-end system for reading unconstrained handwritten page images [IJDAR 2(1):37-44 (1999)]. Prior research in handwriting recognition treated phrases as a concatenation of the constituent words. Presented a methodology that took advantage of the spacing between the words by modeling the word breaks as a feature of the individual writing style [PR: 31(1):41-51 (1998); PR: 35(1):245-252 (2002)].The innovation enabled solutions to several practical document processing systems. The postal handwritten address system was deployed in the field with unprecedented success [IJDAR 4(3):154-169 (2002)]. Bank check reading systems could leverage the recognition of the legal amounts (written in long hand) in the decision making process along with the existing and more accurate recognition of courtesy amounts (numeric strings) [IJPRAI 11(4):657-674 (1997)]. New paradigms for recognition of medical forms became possible by modeling the relationships between handwriting and medical topics. Technique showed that a few automatically recognized characters can be used to construct a linguistic model capable of representing a medical topic category [IJDAR 11(4):203-218 (2009)]. (iv) Innovative Applications

Many of the existing printed text CAPTCHAs (completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart) have been broken by web-bots and are hence vulnerable to attack. Developed the first simulation of human-like handwriting for designing CAPTCHAs to exploit the differential in handwriting reading proficiency between humans and machines [PR: 42(12):3365-3373 (2009)]. The MIT Tech Review (Jan. 2009) highlighted the ingenuity of his Spambot-Fighting Strategy which is grounded in cognitive science principles. Retrieval of handwritten document images is an extremely challenging task and the holy grail of search. Previous methods built indices using distances between rendered image features as an alternative to OCR’ed text to avoid segmentation. Innovated methods that stochastically model imperfect word segmentation inherent in handwriting [PR: 42(12):3374-3382 (2009)] which along with his highly original work on transcript mapping [IWFHR: 213-218 (2002)] is bound to significantly impact the search engines of the future.

http://www.cra.org/ccc/ Computing Research that Changed the World: Reflections and Perspectives, March 25, 2009 “Automated handwriting analysis seems easy but there are many ways to write each number or letter.

Using a learning-based system developed at SUNY Buffalo by Venu Govindaraju and colleagues, 25

billion letters a year are processed automatically by the US postal service - bar-coded for precise deliver

- saving hundreds of millions of dollars..” 4. Awards Visionary Innovator (2004, ‘08, ‘09), UB Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach for licensing technology to industry
