Slide 4

What is VDI?

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure – it is a concept not a product

Leverage the advantages of the data center for the desktop

End users connect to a remote desktop, but have a local experience

Enables a scalable highly available, highly accessible user environment

Server Virtualization High Availability Features

Rapid Provisioning (linked clones, storage cloning technologies)

Remote secure access via SSL or VPN technologies

Brokered Virtual Desktops, PC’s, Blades, Terminal Sessions

Many connection options: thin clients, zero clients, PC’s

Dominant Products: Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View

Slide 5

What is VDI (continued)?

It introduces the concept of the stateless desktop, where the operating system, applications and persona (user data) work together, but are independent building blocks.

Why is this important?

Enables the desktop to be refreshed to a pristine image to fix problems

Enables applications to be upgraded, refreshed or changed without impacting other applications

Enables the Operating System to be changed – XP SP2 to SP3 to Windows 7

Slide 6

Application Virtualization

Application encapsulation removing the requirement for local installation

Applications are delivered to the client in several ways

Streaming – applications executes on the client in an isolated environment.

Presentation – applications execute remotely (server) screen updates are sent to the client.

Reside Locally - Are not installed in the traditional sense, application executes on the client in an isolated environment.

Reduce application deployment time and effort

Critical for full VDI Value Delivery

Dominant Products: Citrix XenApp, Microsoft App-V, VMware ThinApp

Slide 7

Benefits

Why VDI?

Reduction in operational costs

Simplify support, reduce desktop tech touches

Reduction in desktop provisioning cycle

Days/weeks to minutes/hours, define surplus capacity to be ready

Increased security and data protection with centralization

Data resides in data center, policies to control access @ device

User Mobility

Session moves with the user from station to station, from office to remote access

Slide 8

Benefits (continued)

Business agility

Pandemic Planning, A&M, DR/BC, Work from Home, and EOIT

Assist with traditionally disruptive upgrades on the desktop

OS upgrades: XP to Windows 7, application compatibility

Simplify application co-existence and portability

Minimize testing requirements with virtualized applications

Remove compatibility/co-existence issues – i.e. different Java versions, Oracle Clients, IE versions

Slide 9

Opportunities for Change

Revisit how users access data and applications

What applications do they need?

Do users need secure remote access? To their desktop from home?

Where are users saving data – is it local?

Revisit how desktops are managed

Moves, Add, Changes – End Points are used as an appliance, user can log in anywhere and get their desktop

Application deployment – Publish access to virtual applications, update virtual applications without impacting users

Maintenance/Troubleshooting – Refresh virtual application/virtual desktop back to pristine state

Current Solutions

Two industry leaders

Citrix XenDesktop

VMware View

There is no clear market leader at this point in the technology, with both vendors enhancing product functionality.

Both solutions offer different protocol options to improve usability and offer a better experience with audio, USB, local peripheral support.

Can be combined with thin client and management frameworks to enhance user experience for Multimedia, USB redirection, printing

Hardware and software acceleration combined with protocols to enhance video, expand use cases – PCoIP, HDX
