Bible Account: Shadrach Conquers Peer Pressure – Daniel 3:1-30

Destination: Around the city of Babylon

Memory Verse: Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very pleasant help in trouble.”

Aim: The student will name ways he is tempted and identify God as his helper in them.

Life Application: When I am tempted, I will STAND for God.

Getting Started…the earlier the better!

Get with your director and collect all the lesson materials from each of the different age groups you will be teaching. Arrange these materials in a binder, along with a class schedule. The more organized you are, the easier your teaching job will be.

Evaluate your classroom. Decide how to best use the space you will have and how the different age groups can benefit.

Make decoration plans early. This can be the most time consuming part of VBS preparation, and a very valuable teaching tool.

Review your schedule to determine the order of classes. This is important because even though you are teaching the same lesson, the age of the children involved will determine how you will teach it. How much time will you have??

Help!! The younger the children, the more help you will need.

Have a plan B or even C for if plan A falls apart.

Be prepared!! Head knowledge is important but heart knowledge is what counts. This knowledge comes from your own personal experience with the Savior.

Lesson Elements… Bible Backgrounds: These are to be used as commentary tools to your own personal Bible study. The writers of each are different and offer diverse perspectives but it’s what God says to you though His Word that’s of the ultimate importance.

Bible Account Visuals: Each lesson has something. Whether a poster, teaching pictures, or objects, etc, each has been chosen for age appropriateness. However, don’t limit yourself.

Attention Getters: These are typically used at the beginning of the lesson but can be used at a moment’s notice if losing your audience.

Life Application: The best Bible lesson will be only a good history lesson unless a life application is present. Remember age appropriateness and make it personal.

Memory Verse Activities: Games, competitions, rewards….

Activity Pages: Whether done with you or with another teacher in another location, these are very valuable teaching tools. They help keep everything you’ve just taught alive in the mind and heart of the child after he/she leaves VBS. It also becomes a traveling tract to all who will see it once they’ve returned home.

Crafts & Games: Hopefully this will be the work of another teacher as well, however, if this is your responsibility, always use crafts and games that will continue to teach the lesson long after they’ve left your classroom.

Final Thoughts… Of all the many hats worn during VBS, your teacher’s hat is the most important. You’re charged with bringing God’s Word to life in the hearts of children He will place in your presence. Get to know them, love them, and pray for them…even now, before you ever meet them. Be genuine & trustworthy, but most importantly, let them see Christ in you.
