Varför fryser du - und ich nicht?

This is a prototype magazine / brochure / booklet or cata-logue. Consider it what you want. The cases shown in here are real however. As a first step for developing a videoart-documentary about homeless people in Berlin the author tried to contrast poor people from Malmö in Sweden and Berlin in Germany. Are there differences or same reasons for them to live on the streets and lead a life which many people wouldn‘r even like to imagine.

For the interviews in Sweden Bianca Wilk offered her lan-guage skills to translate when the author was talking to homeless people.

In Exchange for their time talking to the author the homeless were offered a cup of tea or coffee.

This is still an ongoing project and will be finished 2012.

Photographs in this issue are taken by Björn Gless with a polaroid and a normal analogue single reflex camera.

Hâkan used to be a construction worker

before he retired. He got financial problems due

to the low rent and has been living on the streets

since. Coming from Helsingborg he incidentally

found the Homeless Accomodation in Malmö.

He is happy about the internet acces and contact

to other people in the refuge for homeless. So-

cial contact is very important, he says. The 65-

year old dreams of having an own organisation

that helps people get out of the streets. Hâkan

creeps into garages and stairwells to not have

to sleep outdoors all the time during the winter.

Jesper is all in all a positive per-

son. He has been selling the magazine FAK-

TUM for several years now and is able to fi-

nance his life through that. He does it for a

living and would be job- and flatless without it.

Jesper eats in the mercy mission of the city

of Malmö. He can afford a small room in a re-

sidential accomodation in Limhamm. Often

people can find him selling the magazine in-

front of Entré. Jesper says that he is content

with the social support of the government.

He likes riding his bike and is 38 years old.

Bengt used to be a lumberjack, than lost

his job and home. He lives with a friend in Möllan

now, who has indicated the FAKTUM paper pro-

ject. He is depending on this project and needs to

sell forty to fifty journals per month to make a living.

To the question of how he was finding the swe-

dish social system he replies quickly: shit.

Finally he agreed to taking a photograph, under the

condiction that you could not clearly see his face,

because he does not find himself very attractive.

He was very surprised by the polaroid technique.

Kjänt worked as a painter, used to be

homeless but now got a little flat on his own. He

likes to meet friends in the refuge for homeless.

The 55-year old depends on government support

and exists on that. Kjänt supports the states soci-

al system and believes that it minimizes the street

criminality. After losing his best friend because

of alcohol and drugs two years ago, he stopped

drinking alcohol. Financial help is great but not

always sufficient, he says. Kjänt moans that for

having a dream for the future it is too late in his life.
