AlthoughBMW’s current fame and reputati-on as one of the greatest automobile manufac-turers can be mostly to models produced in thelast two decades linked, the history of the mar-que stretches back almost 90years and containsnumerous achievements that have establishedit as a benchmark.

The origins of BMW trace back to 1913whenKarl Friedrich Rapp, a Bavarianwho hadbeen a well-known engineer in a German air-craft company, formed Rapp Motoren Werkein a suburb of Munich. The company speciali-zed in airplane engines however Rapp foundthat they were problematic and suffered fromexcessive vibration. Nearby, Gustav Otto, alsoan airplane specialist, set up his own shop,Gus-tav Flugmaschinefabrik, building small air-craft.

Because of the faulty engines, Rapp Moto-ren Werke secured a contract with Austro-Daimler, who was unable to meet its demands,to build V12 Aero engines under license. Thecompany expanded too quickly, however, andby 1916 Rapp resigned from the company be-cause of financial troubles. In his place FranzJosef Popp and Max Friz, two Austrians, tookover the company. In March that same year,Rapp Motoren Werke merged with GustavFlugmaschinefabrik to form Bayersiche Flug-zeungwerke. Itwas shortly afterwards renamedBayersiche Motoren Werke (Bavarian MotorWorks), or BMW, forming the company weknow today.

In 1917, BMW’s first aircraft engine wentinto production, the 6 cylinder Type IIIa. In1919, using an aircraft powered by its succes-sor, the Type IV, Franz ZenoDiemer set an alti-tude record of 9,760 metres (32,013 ft). Afterthe Treaty of Versailles was signed in the sameyear, prohibiting BMW from building aircraftengines, production switched to air brakes forrailway cars. When BMW started once againto build aircraft engines in 1922, no fewer than29 world records in aviation were set withthem. The current BMW logo, introduced in

1920, was based on the circular design of anaircraft propeller.

The first BMW motorcycle, the R 32, wentinto production in 1923 at the newly construc-ted Eisenach factory next to theMunich airportof the day. The R 32 used a flat-twin enginetransversely mounted in a double-tubular fra-meproducing 8.5 horsepower at 3300 rpm.The2-cylinder 494cc motorcycle could reach a topspeed of 59 mph (95 km/h). BMWmanufactu-red 3090 of them during its 3 year life span.

It was 1928 that made history in terms oftheBMWcar. Produced at theEisenbach facto-ry, the Dixi 3/15 PS marked the beginning ofBMW automobile production. It was built un-der license fromAustin and was essentially thesame model as the US Bantam and the Japane-se Datsun. The first Dixis used an open roofandwere powered by a 743cc 4 cylinder engineproducing 15 horsepower. Top speedwas in theneighbourhood of 50 mph (80 km/h). In 1929a new improved version was launched, theDA2, which employed an all-steel body and4-wheel brakes, and in 1930 the Dixi scoredits first wins in motor racing. Total production:18,976 units.

1932was the year the BMWAM4 (Ausfuh-rung Munchen 4 Gange - Munich Version 4Speeds) - a.k.a. BMW’s first “real” car - wentinto production. TheAM4, also called the 3/20PS, was the successor to the Dixi and the firstproduction car to be built entirely in-house byBMW. The powerplant was a 782cc 4 cylinderunit which featured suspended valves and adouble chain driving the camshafts, producing20 horsepower at 3500 rpm and providing thesaloon with a 50 mph top speed.

The next year mark ed the introduction ofthe 303 saloon and the first BMW inline-sixcylinder power unit, a configuration that re-mains BMW’s typical choice even in contem-porary cars. The 303 was also the first BMWto use the twin-kidney shaped radiator grilles,another cur rent trademark. Using a welded tu-bular steel frame, independent front suspensionand rack and pinion steering, the 303 was abenchmark in technological achievements. Its1173cc engine provided 30 horsepower and atop speed of 56 mph (90 km/h).

3 years later, in 1936, the BMW 328 wasintroduced. It was the most popular and re-mains BMW’smost famous pre-war sports car,the successor to the 315/1 (1934-36). The 328was built mainly for motor sport, where it pro-ved itself successful by winning the Mille Mi-glia in Italy in its class in 1938, but quicklybecame a popular road car as well. A curbweight of only 1830 lb was achieved throughthe use of an extra-light tubular spaceframe andlight alloy parts for the hood, doors and tail end.

Using a 1971cc inline-6 cylinder engine withthree carburettors that produced a healthy 80horsepower at 5000 rpm, the 328 could reacha maximum speed of 93 mph (150 km/h). 462units of this classic were produced in total.

In 1935BMWentered the record books onceagain, this time on two wheels. Riding a stre-amlined 500cc compressor machine develo-ping 108 hp and an amazing power-to-weighratio (282 lb curb weight), Ernst Henne set aworld speed record for motorcycles of 173.7mph (279.5 km/h) in 1937. It stood for nearlytwo decades.

BMW’s success was unfortunately short li-ved.After the SecondWorldWar, the companylay in ruins. Its factories had been destroyedor dismantled and a three-year ban on any pro-duction activities was imposed by the Allies inresponse to the production of aircraft enginesand rockets by BMW during theWar. The firstpost war model, the V8 equipped 501 luxurysedan produced in 1951 was a poor productionchoice for a country that was also devastatedby the war. Demand was low and the 501 didnot even com e close to meeting BMW’s ex-pectations.

It was a totally different approach that star-ted to bring BMW back on its feet. In 1955,the Isetta 250 was launched and participatedvery successfully in the mini-car era of the1950’s. It was built under license from the Itali-an manufacturer Iso and used a motorcycle en-gine and a single door at the front. The enginewas a single cylinder 245cc unit producing 12horsepower at 5800 rpm and a top speed of 53mph (85 km/h). During its 7 year productionrun a total of 161,728 Isettas were built.

A couple of years later, with BMW still ha-ving no secure financial foothold, one of themost memorable models in its history was in-troduced. Launched in 1956, the BMW 507quickly became famous. The light-alloy 2-doorbodyshell with a retractable soft top, designedby Alberecht Graf Foertz, has remained time-less as evidenced by the newly introduced Z8,which draws unmistakable clues and its overallshape from it. A large 3168cc V8 engine usingdual downdraught carburettors powered the507 and provided 150 horsepower at 5000rpm,enough for an impressive 124 mph top speed(200 km/h) but not enough to topple its mainrival, the Mercedes 300SL. While only 252examples of the instantly recognizable 507we-re ever produced, it remains a symbol ofBMW’s struggles andultimate triumphs duringthe fifties after the end of the War.

The next step in BMW’s evolution and thepredecessor to the cars we know today waslaunched in 1962. The 1500, which had beendeveloped during the crisis of the ‘50s, was

another of BMW’s saviors. The excellent sus-pension and striking design for its time, em-ploying a low waistline with a low-slung engi-ne compartment and rear lid characterized the1500. A 1499cc 4-cylinder engine producing80 horsepower at 5700 rpm and providing atop speed of 92 mph (148 km/h) powered it.During its two year production run salesamounted to only 23,807 units; however bet-ween all of the models in its range(1500,1600,1800,2000) production totaled334,165 cars. Based on these cars, the first ge-neration 5 series, the E12, was launched 10 ye-ars later in 1972. The 3 series was introduced3 years later and the 7 series 2 years after that,in 1977.

In 1990 BMW re-entered the aircraft enginemanufacturing business after forming BMWRolls-Royce GmbH jointly with Rolls Royce.In 1998, after extended talks concerning the sa-le of Rolls Royce, BMW officially bought therights to the Rolls Royce name and logo fromVolkswagen, with the transition expected to ta-ke place in 2003. 1994 brought about anotherpurchase, as BMW acquired the Rover GroupPLC. After heavy losses, the company was fi-nally sold in 2000, with Rover being split upfrom Land Rover which was purchased byFord. BMW held the rights to the new Miniand the hot-hatch goes on sale in early 2002.

EVATON. - Vaal Important Pantsula’s clinched the winner’s crownas the best group in Evaton during the Evaton Talent Search.

The competition was recently held at the newly renovated EvatonMall.

The competition spanned over two weeks. The search was basedon music, acting, dance, and any form of art. Evaton Marketing Ma-nager Thamia Manjate says the talent search was a business move-ment that attracted people to the mall: “We are very pleased by theturnout and grateful for the groups and individuals who entered. Weare impressed by the efforts of the community to make a successof this competition,” says Manjate.

The ultimate competition gave the judges a major task to workon their talent searchmentality to find the best group or talent. ThethaFM presenters were part of the judging panel - Miss Face of the VaalManager andCreator, and others. The programmewas driven by Zel-da Nikita and Tebogo from Face of Vaal.
